Corrections: The 7404 is a NOT gate, so not technically a buffer, but often NOT gates are used that way - fed through 2 gates in the chip (one output goes to the next input etc). Suzy can flip sprites (H & V), but not rotate as far as I understand, I don't remember seeing that in the SCB (Sprite Control Block). Looking at the schematics it appears both Mikey and Suzy get fed the 16Mhz clock, so Mikey must divide down internally for its own use. I was recently given a Lynx 2. It didn't work however after recapping it I got it to run - sort of. It wouldn't stay on. The power connectors on these are definitely a weak point and was only making an intermittent connection. After reflowing the solder it worked fine. The sound from the speaker was very soft. I read somewhere that these do degrade over time. I found a mylar speaker the same size and and the sound is noticeably louder and no where near as tinny sounding. The last thing I needed to replace was two of three silicone button pads as they had perished. I could not find a new replacement set for the bottom buttons for some reason but fortunately they are fine. I now have a fully working Lynx 2. Now to find some games.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 лет назад
Yes, I will be talking more about the speaker degrading in the next part - that's what I think this Lynx 2 is suffering from. The caps are OK (contrary to my annotation in the video) and its the speaker I think. Great job getting yours up and running =D

This, I dunno if it's restoration or future proofing, was so fun to watch. I share the passion for the Lynx that you have, but not at the level you are at, I loved the machine as a kid, and seeing them again (they were rare as hens teeth in my days, I was the only one who had a 2 as a kid) is just awesome. I'm properly envious of your collection. One thing I did notice is that my Lynx 2 had rather heavily set buttons (the option, flip, reset etc) where as yours seem a lot more proud. Is that an age thing or what?
@GadgetUK164

Thanks mate =D The Lynx was / still is a really sexy hand held. So many great games for it, and despite the size and its battery guzzling appetite, it's an attractive looking system I think. I think when the buttons get worn down they recess a little!

Lol, I can't even remember what I was looking at with the NGP! I fixed the issue with dodgy saving of games back to the SD, but nothing since as it all seems pretty solid now. I'll be getting back to the Jag shortly -- looking forward to it, I've been mostly building a "man cave" over the summer while the weather has been awesome. I've also been meaning to get around to trouble shooting my arcade PCB collection for about 20 years now, and I'm going to use RU-vid as an excuse to finally give it a go. You are quite inspirational in that respect -- your troubleshooting abilities are second to none! The new man cave will be a useful studio... :) On the CFS front, the latest things I've had some very interesting results with are green coffee and amitriptyline. Green coffee has been really interesting -- I've always found coffee to be beneficial, and green coffee is like coffee x 100 in that respect! Good to see so many videos from you recently, I know all too well how bloody hard doing anything can be at times. :)

You didn't want your intro then 😂 This is an awesome video. I have been waiting for a decent Lynx Mk2 fix!! - There is another fix I haven't tried with mine to see if it works. I get the black screen. It's the positive 5v 0.75a link to the C41 cap that makes it work also. Have you heard of this? Anyway. I may have to drag it out and fix it now. I have had the new mosfet ready for it forever. The headphone bypass never worked for me. That is a crazy collection dude. Holy shit!!

Yeah the 102 vertical resolution has always been a sour point for me, well really how all platforms do that, like GB is 144, the GEN/MD is 224, etc. You just want the full aspect ratio in pixel resolution but when it came to cost versus performance the number of scanlines is always the aspect that gets cut down bitd. In my visual testing I'd often pillarbox HUDs on Lynx but that can prevent some vertical tricks unfortunately. Many games overlay stats and that kind of works but it's so easy to put too much there and then the screen gets cluttered. Definitely challenging in fitting layouts from external sources.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 лет назад
Yes, I think the big problem is the 102 height, its so small lol! That said, the 16 colours really help with that - I suspect it would have looked aweful in 8 colours at that res.

Whats the controls circuit, i fitted the BennVee mod, but think i got the scan line / brightness wire on the wrong pad (rear of LCD) which i think shorted something through the brightness pin, and the board just wont work on the buttons, the screen works fine in another console, the buttons work fine on the other console, its the actual board itself which isnt recognising the button presses. If i bypass the V9 circuit with a USB, i can turn the console on, just none of the controls work. so obviously bork something
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 Год назад
The buttons go via resistors into Suzy. Inputs are high (5v) when pressed. If no controls are working, maybe you damaged that 5v rail that each button connects to on one side, or perhaps Suzy is borked.

I guess by watching channels on RU-vid, or by attending a local electronics for beginners course perhaps? I cannot recommend any recent books as I finished studying electronics almost 30 years ago =/

Very interesting watch, I remember having one of these but wasn't impressed by the poor screen, games were quite good on it but I see there's a screen mod out for it and it's 10 times better but at around £100 for it, don't think it's worth it lol

Thanks =D Yes, I've done the LCD mod to one of my Lynxes. It is a bit pricey, but for people that love the system it is worth it!
