It just looks so much bigger with those four big engines hanging down. That and the a330/340 wingspan is about as wide as a 777's wings.

She (ATC) was a bit late with the 'go around' warning. The Luftansa aircraft had already instigated TOGA about 30 secs before.

What do you mean? The aircraft was instructed to initiate a 'go-around' by the tower controller - did you not hear this in the audio?

@@Gustavo_Kickhofel Perhaps Paul is referring to the instruction from ATC to initiate the go-around? There is lag in the audio for some reason, and the go-around instruction is not heard until 0:53.

And we're supposed to believe that you've never had a go-round because you've misjudged a tight runway separation? And if you have, did you need to undergo re-training?

It appears the tower controller misjudged this situation - the separation between the landing aircraft and the one taking off was not going to be achieved, which is why the Lufthansa aircraft was instructed to initiate the go-around.

I would've told Virgin Atlantic to hold and Lufthansa to go around, when overhead traffic is clear OK Virgin Atlantic ready for takeoff.

Yep. Lufthansa lost 10 min on the go around while Virgin would have been held for 1min or less

@@munenex In hindsight, I'm sure the tower controller wouldn't have tried to get Virgin out in front of Lufthansa - the required gap didn't quite seem to be there for this tight separation to work.
