I look at the history of religion as it's bad. Why would I want to join a group of people who don't want to grow up?

you look up the history of people who associated with a religion and did bad things with it*, true I wouldn't trust people who came to my parents land, enslaved the land and taught the people that they are inferior bc "God said so", gladefully I look at the religion nd not the people to define it

I just like how open both parties were. They showed respect and openness new information. Such talks really help in forming a perspective on these issues

There are different kinds of people on a fundamental level. My mother and I are extremely close and we live and laugh and get along amazingly well and talk nearly every day. She is a Biblical Christian and a life long committed Democrat. I accepted long ago that there are no words I can say, no argument that I can make that will change her perspective on these ideas. The Democrats could announce a mandatory interment camp policy for all non-Democrats for re-education and my sweet mom would probably go along with it. And I understand that there are equal Republicans that are the same way. The important part is to try to find the kindness and value in human beings beyond the focus on conflict and differences. I agree these style of debates don't really accomplish anything other than getting clicks from people whose minds are already made up.

Evidence shows that given the freedom to explore religious dogma on their own and choose its place in their lives with NO punitive punishment, people more likely choose pragmatism or rejection over high level of religiosity. This describes the West and christianity. Islam is different because aside from 8 countries where punishment for apostasy is death, most muslim countries still have pretty substantively negative consequences for rejecting islam. Hence people have little choice but to at the least pay lip service to religious fervor.

The main thing that I see as the most damaging aspect about Christianity is the teachings of Jesus which says take no thought for tomorrow and when it says that Jesus said that if someone doesn’t hate their family and even hate themselves then they can’t come to Jesus.

@user-nz8uy1zm3z "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:25-27) Nothing about sin! Just hate everybody. What a disgusting teaching!

@user-nz8uy1zm3z “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even their own life-such a person cannot be my disciple". - Luke 14:26

@user-nz8uy1zm3z 1. You have to hate your family and only trust/follow me - that's what every cult leader says. 2. In a good book you would not find *any* such verses. 3. Yes, you can also find other verses. The bible is a book full of contradictions. 4. There are a lot of disgusting, unmoral verses in the bible. Not just one. (Do I have to remind you of all the verses where god commands his people to kill everyone, even children and infants? Where god orders brother to kill brother? Where god explicitly condones slavery?) 5. I can't be my own god just like I can't be Superman. (There are no gods.) 6. Why would I hate Christ? He's just a fictional character in a collection of fairy tales. I hate all the harm that religion has caused; all the cruelty and how religion is holding us back from becoming a better society.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding Christianity but it seems to be based on human sacrifice, blood magic, and torture which I think most children would fear and those are not my personal values. So I'm not Christian anymore because it doesn't align with my values. Maybe there is a version of Christianity that doesn't have those things in it but it seems like most pastors and preachers love to talk about human sacrifice, blood magic, and torture. And they say those things are good which I disagree with.

Christianity has a fundamentally uncertain meaning because different sects took different interpretations over a set of texts that _each_ in turn carried different implications, sometimes even despite having the same author (ex: Paul's letter to the Romans vs. Galatians). In one explicit case, the philosopher René Girard managed to take the Gospel message as precisely the very _undermining_ of human sacrifice, blood magic and torture by revealing our anthropological propensity to scapegoat as the root of all evil. But ultimately, what this really goes to show is that if you actually want to extract any value from religion, it has to be _philosophized._ Faith without reason is simply fanaticism, a delusion.

I believe Christianity is not based on human sacrifice, blood magic or any kind of torture. It's based on love. Matthew 22:35-40 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
