This band is one of the inventors of technical death Metal.. period.. hands down one of the best in the game.. this stuff came out back in the early 90s, late 80s.. so yeah, they were way ahead of their time man.. the musicianship of this band is just ridiculously incredible.. alot of ppl are saying that they're sloppy n what not but the reality is that they're just so all over the place musically that it's really over alot of ppls heads man.. so they say it's sloppy and sucks because they just don't fuckin get it.. and that's it.. these guys are fuckin incredibly amazing..
Shannon jaxx I totally agree. The only problem that the lineup that they had at the time of this video included a shitty guitar player. The sloppiness probably came from him.
Im blown away... never heard or seen this band ever before. I know the name and logo and so on.. but this video was the grand premiere to a band who now will sell a bunch of cd:s in a near future.
I must say again that this is killer. 1:43 to 2:15 is some damn good shit. Great energy by these guys too. I read that Kelly Shaffer the vocalist tried out for Velvet Revolver. He didnt get the gig. Im glad because I hate velvet revolver but it would have been cool to see Kelly make some big cash so he can buy some nice toys. Looks like a cool guy who would buy his buddy Steve Flynn a new patio deck.
Death are as well. It was a well mixture Spiritual Healing and Piece Of Time came around the same time and Spiritual Healing, although not as techincal, was still transforming itself. Then Human came out and then Death became pretty techincal.
I agree 100 percent man.. atheist pretty much are one of the inventors of technical death Metal.. they paved the way for alot of the tech death bands that are out now.. they just don't know it because atheist is a very very underrated band.. always have been because it was way over ppls heads.. they were way way ahead of their time.. as a death metal drummer myself, I fuckin love atheist because of their musicianship.. they're just amazing man and one of my biggest influences as far as playing death metal.. they taught me athing or two that's for sure.. take care man.. cheers..
@@michaeltozzi3112 Spiritual Healing isn't that technical, and "Piece of Time" was recorded already in late 1988, while "Spiritual Healing" a year later or so.
Shaffer is the fucking man for hooking up that dude up with the bday gifts!! Thats better than getting a gift certificate from Sears. I like him as a front man. Very good stage presence. He interacts with the crowd and so do the rest of the band. Atheist should be in the rock n roll hall of fame
Jesus Christ, it's Kelly Shaefer! *worships* I wish I was there to catch ATHEIST live...damn. If you guys are planning on going to Australia to tour, do consider dropping by Singapore! :)
Say what you will about the studio and live performances.....nothing will beat the drunken storage locker days in Manatee County. Glad to see they are still getting after it.
Sorry to burst a bubble, but Atheist did not play sloppy on this gig. The fact is, this recording is pretty crap. If you listen to the album version of this gig, you'd find out that for a band that hasn't played for 13 years, they're stupidly well rehearsed.
Fuckin' great ! this band foresaw a lot of things and styles within metal, and included other styles as well (jazz, funk, etc..) I'm sure a guy like Mike Patton should like that stuff, and Anthrax as well) Man, it makes me think also that we miss Chuck (Shuldiner) too !
Haha.. I thought the same exact thing man.. lol.. that's so funny because I was thinking the same thing listening to it and came across your comment.. but you are so right man.. he does sound alot like Chad grey..
Yes he's obviously not death metal style, but Atheist are far from your average death metal band, so why is it a worry? They suit Atheist just fine. If he were fronting say, Cannibal Corpse it'd be a different matter. There's no need for namecalling :)
Holy shit, is right. Ive never heard this before either. Always heard about these guys, but never got around to listening to to the music I remember a magazine described one of their albums saying "If Rush were death metal, they would sound like Atheist" Does anyone know if that is Rand Burke playing the white guitar? That dude is shredding. Im buying all their CD at relapse You can count on it, assburger
@MarsBringerofWar19 its cause they are recording the instruments directly, thats why you cant hear the crowd. but oh well, in general it could be weak ATHEIST RULES!
dude my friends brother is a tatto artist and recently did a tat for Shaffer and told him about my friends guitar playing and his birthday so shaffer sent him autopraphed posters and shirts just for his birthday
Atheist are great in both studio and live! We believe if you like them you'll like us too! we INVITE YOU TO LISTEN FOR FREE to our latest CD in our channel! Let us recommend "An infinite curse", we hope to see you there! \m/
But such an edgy name, I don't know if the RnR Hall of fame would be able to handle a band hailing a name regarding such a down to earth concept unfortunately.
Atheist is exceptional on their records, but during their live performances some of their playing is sloppy and Kelly's vocals just don't hit like they use to.
Great song, they did the instruments well. But the vocals just weren't on, I'm normally not to critical on live performance vocals - but this...Is just below par. No offence - Atheist is one of my favorite bands. Though I preferred Patterson over Choy. RIP Roger Patterson.
Heh, yeah really. That place is neat and all, but seriously, the bands they admit sometimes are ridiculous. Madonna is in there for Christ's sake, what the fuck?
kelly's vocals suck. hes totally lost it. however the band are gods instrumentally and they write the coolest fucking shit. ill never forget the first time i heard em
