-------------------------------------VIDEO NOTES-------------------------------------
I recently made a video about human rights, and why despite not objectively existing we should treat them as though they do. Since then, I had a response from a channel called 'EpistemiX', claiming that my views should prevent me from justifying a moral concern for non-human animals.

@Ferber Merbidur I'm sure you didn't deny your religion in a vacuum either. Something informed your "common sense." Just seems like you're trying to gloat about your intellectual superiority while kicking someone. Atheists already have a bad reputation for that, so don't make it worse.
@davydtaylor4151
@davydtaylor4151 4 года назад
Ferber Merbidur I cant see how you can say that bud. There must have been a time when you decided that you were not a believer, irrespective of when that was. Also, assuming that atheism is correct, having the right opinion on it doesn’t necessarily mean you used logic and reason to get there. It makes me laugh when atheists just assert that they have common sense and reason as if ordained by God himself. The proper use of logic and reason is learned. I spent time at uni studying philosophy that taught me how best to formulate sound positions, and what fallacious reasoning was. However, for those people with more sense than to waste their time and money like I did, youtube is a great place to learn new perspectives and their flaws.

@Ferber Merbidur My religion taught me as a young child that doubting God was shameful, they taught me that atheism was an inherently evil thing and that anyone who engages In it is a morally destitute servant of satan. The only reason I allowed myself to entertain my doubts was because people like Cosmic Skeptic made it seem acceptable. Different people have different upbringings and dispositions, dont be a dick.

Urban Desi TV a moment of silence for the brain cells you are losing and have lost... .... .... .... Anyway just because you are losing brain cells doesn’t mean atheists are also losing them. (That is also an ad hom btw) if you feel the need to jump off of buildings I would ask you not to do so unless it’s a very low building perhaps. The person that falsely assumed u were Muslim (because the theist in this vid was a Muslim) was referring to where you said “circle jerking with other atheists”, which is a “self-congratulatory discussion where little to no progress is made”. Tbh I’m doubting between whether it is a circumstantial or an abusive ad hom. It would be circumstantial if you assume ppl think this, just because of their circumstances, namely the lack of a belief in imaginary beings. Otherwise it would simply be abusive as you try to show he is mistaken by being abusive towards atheists instead of addressing what was said. Sadly you seem to have lost too many braincells by your own admission to realize this... but more perplexing still is your first comment where you think he(an atheist, I assume as he is agreeable) is rebutting something, that another atheist said while agreeing with him? Even though he was just pointing out a funny pun. So I guess your poorly worded OP has caused all of this confusion. I must ask, do you know what a rebuttal is?

Yes, empathy for animals within our tribe.
@darkwolf4434
@darkwolf4434 4 года назад
@tubetardism 20/20 No, I just need go look at all animals that are tribal, like wolves, chimpanzees and so on. Chimpanzees rip members of other tribes apart even if they've been part of their own tribe in the past. So this shows what humans actually are, but we have expanded our tribes through things like religion and other social constructs, which has caused bigger conflicts within tribes like wars.
@darkwolf4434
@darkwolf4434 4 года назад
@tubetardism 20/20 Bonobos just like chimpanzees are tribal animals and has their own territory and crossing that border still means conflicts between tribes. They are very closely related to chimpanzees and has evolved from the same primate as Bonobos for not that long ago. And of course I'm using mammals tribal behaviours because that only means that those behaviours are extremely old. And also, yes we do not feel empathy towards other tribes but we still adapt our tribes all the time, and has expanded our tribes through history. Some examples are TribesClans>Cities>Countries>Religious groups and so on, so today we have expanded it to a so large groups that we almost see every human as part of the tribe but our tribalism adapts all the time so we basically can see this in sports especially where fans sees their favourite team as "us" and the other team as "them" which is what Tribalism is.
@chadrasmussen6127
@chadrasmussen6127 3 года назад
Bro that's not true animals don't have empathy they kill other animals all the time so the fact that us humans having empathy twords each other point to a creator that cares about us as well because without said creator we are just like other animals so therefore why even have empathy other animals don't when they kill or be killed so without god how do you explain where empathy came from
@ravermader7035
@ravermader7035 3 года назад
@@chadrasmussen6127 chimps are animals. They have empathy. You can directly observe this when adult chimps adopt orphaned baby chimps. Chimps, and to an extent, primates, developed this tribal empathy to help each other out for the betterment of the tribe. As for chimps against other tribes, or chimps against other animals, they do not have much empathy. The difference in empathy between humans and primates is that we simply have a more developed concept of empathy than our ancient relatives. God could not have created our morals, as to believe he did would be to assume that God already exists without evidence, and not that he was created by *us*, to reflect *our* moral and empathetical ideologies.

@stylis666
@stylis666 4 года назад
@@johnwilkins11 Yeah, compassion is a better word, but also not really covering everything. There are many ways to come to the same conclusion. You can be entirely practical and clinical about it and then it's still better to not kill fish willy nilly and possibly not even for food, assuming we have plenty of easily accessible alternatives that don't cost more and do taste at least as good because as long as you can't give me something I rather eat than a fish, that fish is dead, especially if I'm alone in a cabin in the woods ;)
@johnwilkins11
@johnwilkins11 4 года назад
@@stylis666 I disagree that the alternatives have to taste as good for it to be the case that we should eat them instead (it is better we eat to survive with no pleasure in food than kill animals to eat), but aside from that I agree.
@stylis666
@stylis666 4 года назад
@@johnwilkins11 Well, psychology is a thing. We need pleasure to survive and also to motivate us. But I agree it's not necessary that better food tastes better, it's just a matter of conditioning. We didn't originate with the taste for meat and then evolved to be able to survive eating meat. Eating meat had benefits and we developed a taste for it. But the underlying premise I was referring to is that it has to be encouraging on the short term if you want to change people's behaviours and that's not just true for people, but for all animals and even companies and organizations. Taste is just a great motivator, but you could also do it by taxing fish and meat and putting that money towards subsidizing biologically farmed vegetables, nuts and soy and things. You could also discourage eating meat and fish by forcing stores to hang up images of how the animals are held and slaughtered because evidence shows that people have little to no issues with abusing and killing living beings, even fellow humans, as long as they are not face to face with them and there's a mechanism that puts distance between the abuser/killer and the victim. Removing that distance results in less suffering. I can tell you now that it will work better than threatening people with an increased long term chance of various deadly diseases and then showing the worst case scenario that happens to maybe one in a million of people who get that specific disease and you might some day also get, in the future and probably a lot less severe. Long term benefits are exactly as shit as putting distance between people and the effects they're causing. It maybe encourages one or two people and the other billions will cause more suffering to billions of animals every day because they are not given a reason to care more about that than about enjoying a meal with their family and to change the behaviour of that family you need to make it more enjoyable to choose alternatives. If the kids hate it, that's counterproductive to the well being of the family and to your goal. But there are more ways than one to make a mushroom burger taste better for those children. One of them is by taking them to a farm and show the animals alive and happy and let your children pet them and the animals enjoy the attention from your children and explain that that is why they're not eating veal but mushrooms. Conditioning by encouraging and increasing awareness works just fine, but encouragement is necessary, whichever method or methods we choose to use.

@Davi Cirillo I’m not Marxist at all, just think deeper. What religion does is the indoctrination of people to uphold specific moral values as if it were deriving from objective morality. This happens even outside of religion, it needs to happen in a functional society. But the atheist becomes inconsistent and contradicting when they think they can acknowledge true objective morality. The atheist needs to bite the bullet and always go back to morality being subjective without the discovery of a true objective morality.

@Gringo7213
@Gringo7213 4 года назад
@@lordawesometony2764 nope if morality is defined, then depending on that definition there can indeed be objective morality. The definition may be subjective, but once defined certain actions are objectively moral based on that definition. So for instance if morality is defined as obeying the will of god, then any action that obeys that will is by definition moral. If however it is defined as reducing harm and increasing happiness (or something along those lines) then certain actions that would be moral in the god system would be immoral in the reducing harm an increasing happiness system.

It's not the belief in god that matters, it's the "belief" in consequences. If you believe in an afterlife where your deeds are judged, it should (at least in theory) disincentive immoral behavior.

I think morality is rooted in empathy, and the ability to understand that, just like I myself don't want to experience pain, then others don't want to experience pain either. And when I can see that the reaction of others to pain is similar to my own, that is, the constant attempt to avoid it, I can understand that nobody wants to experience it. Also, www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/wildlife/5373379/Animals-can-tell-right-from-wrong.html And the fact that you refer to scriptures for proof in itself is enough to refute your suspicion, as scriptures have proven to be an untrustworthy source of information because of the inconsistencies of their claims and illogical/improbable narration of events at many instances.

I always get annoyed when this line of questioning comes up in relation to atheism. It seems pretty obvious that our evolutionary path is the source of our empathy, and human values that we tend to associate with morality. Evolving in family groups, requiring close knit ties in order to survive, and as a result, caring about the well being of those around you as an extension of your own well being. Of course we grew out of the early days of humanity, and into a more philosophical, poetic species that focuses, and cares about the "why" more than our base instincts. For example, it might make you feel better to punch a coworker in the face if they ate your lunch from the fridge. However, the odds are incredibly high that any bystander will respond with the question of "Why would you do that?!" Sure you might feel better, but it's an irrational response to the situation. It doesn't help you in any way, nor does it benefit anyone else around you, so in the end it would be an unnecessary, and unreasonable response to the situation. Our basic instincts, are a blend of self preservation, defending our flocks out of self interest and learned attachments, as well as us vs them responses. Now that we are a more developed people, who have the ability to distinguish base instincts against better judgment, we have the ability to problem solve, and ask "Why? Why would I do that action, and would it be beneficial to myself or those around me, or is it simply an impulse without justifiable cause? And if I were to do that, how would it effect the interactions of myself, and those around me? How would I feel if someone took this action out on _me_ or one of _my_ loved ones?" I feel like explaining these basic concepts might come across as cold, but it's simply the most straight forward explanation I can think of when I'm asked something like this. My understanding is as follows: "Atheists are capable of holding, and following moral beliefs because it is a basic, fundamental response to problem solving. If I were to hurt someone around me, it wouldn't be much different than shooting myself in the foot. All I would be accomplishing is creating a hindrance for myself, and the people I rely on, who rely on me in return. You also wouldn't shoot someone else in the foot, because the thought of having it happen to you elicits a negative response. You wouldn't like it, and more likely than not you might even retaliate as a response. Ergo, hindering someone else, will more likely than not, come back to hurt you as well. So in the end, it would be better to apply a more diplomatic response in most cases, than it would be to shoot yourself in the foot."

@14:24 I have a quibble with this statement: Lack of Pleasure & Pain are qualitatively different stimuli! I'm also surprised by your labelling of the goal to maximize pleasure as utilitarianism, rather than the more precise label (yet still imprecise) of "utilitarian hedonism". The essential differences between the many other forms of hedonism and the Epicurean comfortable existence illustrate the Philosophical writings supporting my original point, but also much (somewhat sadistic) psychophysics research on nociception (pain receptors + nerves) and behavioral traumas such as "conditioned place {preference, aversion} offer fertile topics for novel insights!

I'm vegan and atheist and saying that's a contradiction is the dumbest thing ever. I suffer, animals suffer. I don't need a God to tell me to care in order to recognise this! I think *if* you need a God to _care_ then there's something wrong with you! Animals seek to maximise their pleasure and through empathy and from my privileged position of being human and protected from being killed and eaten I feel it's wrong to enslave, harm, kill, and eat animals.

I believe that our emotions have specifically evolved to help us treat each other in a way that maximises the chances of our survival as a species - put simply we need each other and we need to be able to cooperate with each other... the moral code we have intellectually developed - managed to put into language and reason out - attempts to ensure our co-operation through a larger 'justice' system (game theory, etc, elucidates this )
@antonypinol233
@antonypinol233 4 года назад
Alex you claim that it is objectively true that "sentient creatures will always desire the maximisation of their pleasure", how is this objectivley true in the same sense that 1+1=2? Surely its not? Pleasure is a subjectivley identifiable quality, not an objectivley identifiable one. Similarly, an individual's motivations are a subjectivley identifiable quality, not an objective one. you might 'believe' that this it is the case that all sentient beings desire the maximisation of their pleasure, but at base you are making this claim based off your own experience. I could counter that "sentient creatures will always desire the maximisation of either; (1) their pleasure or (2) their ability to Love" I could argue that Love is a completely different disposition to pleasure and that the felt quality of each of these dispositions (the 'qualia' in fancy terms) is completely different. That Love seeks peace through mutual connection with that which is other to you. That pleasure seeks self-satisfaction. This claim, just like yours, would be equally based off my own experience and, similarly, it would not be objective in the sense that 1+1=2. So we could not argue that epistemic value is what separate the two claims, only subjective experience, ergo each claim is subjective and not objective, which is fine, so long as we are not trying to mislead people into believing that it is objectively the case. Having agreed that both were subjective, we could then fairly discuss why we believe what we do, how the other could experience things as we do, and why they might want to experience things as we do (e.g. why our belief concerning human motivations is more conducive to a 'better' life), neither of us would be belittling the other with claims at epistemic/objective superiority because both would accept that their claims were at base subjectively founded and the discussion would be more conducive to mutual understanding and not be reduced to a 'he's wrong, no you're wrong' futile philosophical language game, with each party erroneously staking a claim at objectivity.

It seems like Alex refers to pleasure in a broader sense, say the satisfaction of any wants (so long they don't clash with someone else's) or something that could be measured, in theory, neurochemically (assuming, of course, that scientific materialism is true so that our biology perfectly describes our subjective experience). My trouble with grounding morality in biology is that this medium is prone to intervention. Soon enough we'll gain significant control over our circuitry and it is not obvious to me by virtue of what should we refrain from utilizing this technology (happy pills, genetic engineering, neural implants etc - pretty sf stuff, but it's gonna come eventually) to take the philosophy of "minimizing suffering/maximizing pleasure" to the next level. It seems rather uncanny to me that some goodreads reviews of brave new world regard it as an utopia formula. I guess a useful question is "Is our current touch with reality, as built by evolution, to be preserved in the wake of a post-external-stimuli age and, if so, for what reasons".
