-------------------------------------VIDEO NOTES-------------------------------------
'Human rights' are often spoken of as though they are materially existing, ontological principles that can never be violated by right of nature. A great deal of atheistic moral philosophy is predicated on experiences of pleasure and pain, which seem in some instances to come into conflict with a rights-based ethical worldview.
What if pleasure is maximised by violating a right? Can we objectively ground human rights without invoking God or religion? If we cannot, can we still talk about human rights as though they do exist?

@Locust Swarm It was thought at the time, and is still argued today by historians & military strategists that there would have been significantly more casualties, both civilian and military, with an invasion of Japan. Prior to those bombings the Japanese were not going to surrender - that's a certainty. It would have been a long, protracted fight for every square foot involving guerilla tactics, suicide attacks, civilian conscripts and volunteers - every single house and building would have been a fight to the death against a population who would not surrender, through fear, indoctrination and cultural values - a fight to the last man, woman and child.....in Japan.....many islands, cities and urban centres, and difficult terrain. You aren't suggesting that there would have been less casualties with a land Invasion, are you? The USA was faced with a terrible decision during 1945. (Before you point it out, I know that it was also a show of force to the Soviet Union, however the primary concern was a land invasion, where the casualty numbers could easy have gone into seven figures.)

Saboor is arguing what do you base your human rights on? As a human if right is dependent on subjective interpretation of an individual, then everyone could come up with so many possibilities and what you consider correct someone else may consider it wrong and vice versa. So it will get so messy that, at the end you won't know what is right or wrong anymore.

(10:54) "Morality is a fad....it is subjective...we could have evolved...." "Rights" according to the US constitution include the right to pursue happiness. That right exists whether or not a government recognizes it, and whether or not a civilization exists. @@korsol Who gave me the rights ? Nobody. Rights don't need to be given in order to exist. Did I earn them ? No. That's the point. They exist whether or not they are earned. Is there really something out there as rights ? I'm not sure. I think that they disappear as soon as a concise definition is attempted. It definitely seems to be the case that different people have different ideas of what it means. Is it subjective .... ? The right to pursue happiness isn't subjective. I also don't think it is unique to humans. It's only predicated on the assumption that there is life, and that life is attracted toward some things, and avoids others.

Eh, I think it comes more from the idea that under materialism it would seem that there is no “individual” making a “choice”. Like yes, it may *feel* like a choice; however that sensation is an illusion and not valid for making moral arguments. Like a program with only so many possible actions given; yet it calls itself ‘free willed’ because it *gets* to choose one of the options

@@bowlsallbroken SATAN'S KINGDOM FROM THE KJV (Satan is an counterfeiter 2nd Corinthians 11:13,14,14) Are you aware that the serpent has fork (double) tongue? With one he speaks the truth and the other speak falsehood. He mixes lies with God's truth to seduce, lure, deceive and destroy. He told Eve the first women a lie, you shall not surely die Genesis 3:4,5. For God knows that in the day that ye eat of it, ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. He told Jesus In Luke 4:3 If thou be the Son of God, turn this stone (the law written on the tablet of stones) to become bread. He actually wanted to make Jesus eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil like he did to Eve. He told Jesus again to jump down from the pinnacle In Luke 4:9 and that it is written in Luke 4:10,11 that God shall give His angels over Him to keep Him in all of His ways lest He dash His feet against a stone. Jesus said he has been lying from the beginning and that when he lies, he speaks his native language because he is the Father of it In John 8:44. Satan will mix his deadly poison of falsehood with the twisted word to deceive. This is why Jesus said, Search the scripture, for in it you think you have eternal life, and they are they which testify of me John 5:39. He continued, You do err not knowing the scripture nor the power of God, John 1:12 God wants you equipped with the Armour of His Sword of the Spirit always against the whiles of the devil, which is the word of God Ephesians 6:17.. Satan is presently called the "god of this world" in II Corinthians 4:4. Jesus referred to Satan's Kingdom in Matthew 12:26 when He said, "And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?" This world and this world's kingdoms are under the domain of Satan. When Jesus Christ was tempted by Satan, the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, 'All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou wilt worship me all shall be yours.' (Luke 4:5-7)." Was this a bonafide offer? Could Satan offer all this world's kingdoms to Jesus Christ? The answer is yes! One day Jesus Christ will take away the kingdoms of this world from Satan and they will become His. The book of Revelation tells us, "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and His Christ; and He shall reign forever and ever (Revelation 11:15)." But, presently, Satan has control. Satan is known by many different names in the Bible. Some of Satan's names are: (1) Satan II Corinthians 2:11 (2) the tempter Matthew 4:3 (3) the devil Matthew 4:5 (4) the enemy Matthew 13:25,39 (5) the wicked one Matthew 13:38 (6) the dragon Revelation 12:9 (7) the old serpent Revelation 12:9 (8) that crooked serpent Isaiah 27:1 (9) the accuser Revelation 12:10 (10) the piercing serpent Isaiah 27:1 (11) the deceiver Revelation 12:9 (12) the adversary I Peter 5:8 (13) the liar John 8:44 (14) the father of lies John 8:44 (15) the murderer John 8:44 (16) the oppressor Isaiah 14:4 (17) Son of the morning! Isaiah 14:12 (18) Lucifer Isaiah 14:12 (19) the son of the morning Isaiah 14:12 (20) the one that laid low the nations Isaiah 14:12 (21) leviathan Isaiah 27:1 (22) the dragon that is in the sea Isaiah 27:1 (23) the anointed cherub Ezekiel 28:14 (24) Beelzebub Matthew 12:24 (25) Belial (which means "wickedness" II Corinthians 6:15 (26) Apollyon (Greek for "destroyer") Revelation 9:11 (27) Abaddon (Hebrew for "destruction") Revelation 9:11 (28) angel of the bottomless pit Revelation 9:11 (29) the prince of the world John 14:30 (30) the prince of the power of the air Ephesians 2:2 (31) the prince of the demons Matthew 12:24 (32) the god of this world II Corinthians 4:4 (33) an angel of light II Corinthians 11:14 (34) the strong man Luke 11:21 (35) the thief John 10:10 (36) the wolf John 10:12 (37) the roaring lion I Peter 5:8 (38) the spoiler Isaiah 16:4 (39) the extortion Isaiah 16:4 Each of the above names describes something of Satan's character. Satan often makes himself appear so laughable and absurd that people do not fear him. Or he persuades them that he does not exist so that people are incapable of resisting his assaults. Satan appears as "an angel of light" according to II Corinthians 11:14. He often appears as having the truth of the gospel and deceives many. Satan's primary objective is to prevent people from understanding the gospel message so that they might be saved. "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should shine unto them (I Corinthians 4:4)." Satan often blinds the lost by giving them a heavenly way to go to hell. In other words religion is Satan's substitute for the gospel. Jesus Christ's major objective is to reach a lost world with the gospel. "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved (John 3:17)." And again in Luke 19:10 we read, "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." Satan's major objective is to prevent people from becoming saved. One objection given by the lost more than any other to the true gospel is that "It is too simple!" Satan uses that very objection to cause people to not believe the gospel. Notice II Corinthians 11:3, "But I fear, lest by any means as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." The message of salvation is not based on human works or merit but on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary, alone by faith alone "Titus 3:5. (Ephesians 2:4 8,9, Says, For by grace in his mercy are you saved through faith, and that not of your selves, it is the gift of God not of works, lest any man should boast" Eternal life is not of works, you do nothing to be saved, you have to believe something to be saved. Grace means unmerited favor, Grace means undeserved mercy, Grace means God is giving you something you do not deserve for free, with out trying to earning it by what you do, that is Grace. Romans 11:6 Says, And if by Grace, then it is no more of works: Other wise Grace is no more Grace, But if it be of works, then it is no more Grace: Other wise work is no more work Titus 3:5 Says, not by works of righteousness by which we have done, Romans 4:6 Says, ("God imputed our rightness without" works.") Therefore, the true message is simple. God has done all the hard part. Our part is simply to receive Jesus Christ by faith! Satan is a counterfeiter! He has his imitations: (1) false Christ, the Antichrist Revelation 13:2 (2) synagogues (his church) Revelation 2:9 (3) doctrine I Timothy 4:1 (4) mysteries (the depth of Satan) Revelation 2:24 (5) throne Revelation 13:2 (6) kingdom Luke 4:6 (7) power Revelation 13:2 (8) worshipers Revelation 13:4 (9) diabolical trinity Revelation 16:13 (10) angels Revelation 12:7 (11) ministers II Corinthians 11:15 (12) miracles II Thessalonians 2:9 (13) sons John 8:44 (14) sacrifices I Corinthians 10:20 (15) communion I Corinthians 10:20 (16) table I Corinthians 10:21 (17) Satan's cup* II Corinthians 10:21 (18) glory Jude 8,9 (19) armies Isaiah 24:21 (20) gospel Galatians 1:6-9 (21) spirit II Corinthians 11:4 …and more. Satan counterfeits the gospel by offering people religion instead of salvation. All religions are based on man's works for salvation, where as God's salvation is based solely on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The word "religion" comes from two Latin words "re" and "ligio" which mean to do something of self to bind back to God. Religions are therefore man's efforts to bind himself back to God by what he does. God says in the Bible that it is impossible for man of his own efforts to bind himself to God. Satan delights himself in blinding man into thinking that he could earn eternal life through his works. God's plan of salvation is the exact opposite of religion. Notice Romans 4:5, "But to him that work not, but believe on him (Jesus Christ) that justified the ungodly (human race), his faith is counted for righteousness." The person who wholly trusts Jesus Christ alone, by faith alone,as their only hope for heaven will be saved. All others will perish. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believe in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16)." Satan's kingdom truly is this world and Jesus Christ came to save (rescue) us from it. What you believer about this will determine your destiny as to where you will go and spend eternity the moment you die and leave your body.

Why can't an atheist not have an opinion on what constitutes human rights but a religion stuck in the middle ages thinks it can take the moral high ground. If that religion had it's way here, as it has in Indonesia, homosexuality would be punishable by death. To me that is the very antithesis of observing human rights. All humans should be free to worship or leave any religion, be free to fall in love and live with whoever they want so long as that desire is reciprocated and we should all have the right to say what we think without fear of persecution even if others may find our views unpalatable.

@@urbandesitv3529 Science left religion behind ages ago when it developed the methodology of using experiment and evidence to make its conclusions. Religions, all of them, have no credible evidence. Back in the middle ages, people who did not prescribe to a religion, usually the catholic religion, would be sent to the inquisition, imprisoned and/or put to death. For so very long men who were seeking to learn about the human body for medical reasons were forbidden by the church to do research on dead bodies, putting medicine back 1,000 years. Gallelio was put on trial for realizing the Earth orbited the Sun and made to recant his findings. Just to name a few. BTW Communism is akin to a religious ideology where it replaces a god with the worship of the State. The killings were done, not in the name of atheism, but in the name of Communism just like the Catholic inquisition. The communist leaders particularly targeted the intellectuals, scientists and academics who wouldn't bow to the state. Today we see secular countries like Denmark, Finland, et al who are majority atheist and they aren't murdering anyone but are thriving and have the happiest populations in the world.

@@urbandesitv3529 Well that was hilarious. You obviously have made up a lot of theological nonsense you falsely believe supports your ideological ideas and you can't spell worth a damn LOL. Not surprising. Your "data" is not real data. Atheist scientists: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_atheists_in_science_and_technology Darwin: by the time of writing the Descent of Man, in 1871, Darwin was pretty unconvinced that any religion around today really would work or be true. He spends a lot of the Descent not just accepting morality but trying to show how it came about through natural selection, and why overall it is a good thing. Religion also gets a naturalistic explanation, but basically as a side-effect of the evolutionary process. Darwin likens religious belief to the mistakes that his dog made in thinking a parasol blowing in the wind is alive. Secular comes from Anglo-French seculer and Late Latin saecularis, meaning "worldly" or "pagan." According to the 2012 WIN/Gallup International Survey, the number of atheists is on the rise across the world, with religiosity generally declining. Europe has had a very very bad past with religion. It was a continent where the Church gained too much power and as soon as people could, they left it for atheism. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/atheists-countries-list-six-world-most-convinced-a6946291.html Religion around the world is on the decline. For the first time ever, Norway now has more people who do not believe in God than do - with 39 per cent of atheists versus 37 per cent of believers. In the US, meanwhile, a nation whose dollar bill signs states "In God We Trust", belief in the Christian deity is also at an all time low. Research found that nearly twice as many Americans in 2014 said they did not believe in God as in 1980 - and that five times as many in 2014 said they never prayed, with millenials in particular accounting for the change in public opinion.

@@urbandesitv3529 "Religion advanced science throughout all of human history. " You couldn't be more wrong. Religion and science are two separate things. When theists or atheists are doing science, neither are doing religion. When the religious are doing science, it is not religion advancing science. It is the implementation of the scientific method - and the accumulation of accurate data that advances scientific knowledge. Not religion. "Firs of all, secular does not mean atheism" Completely agree. However, secular means worldly or of this world. And to some extent, we have Christianities horrendous past to thank for the advancement of secularism. You see, Christianity was pretty much unlivable - with goals of rejecting the worldly(secular) in favour of the divine. Practically impossible. For those reasons, and because of centuries horrendous religious wars, conflicts and persecutions across Europe - much of which horrified the slightly more progressive and liberal factions of the Christian faiths - there began a conscious effort to place more emphasis on worldly human reason to resolve problems - and less emphasis on religious dogma/divinity(of which was causing much of the division, terror and horrendous conflicts and persecutions across Europe). So, European civilisation naturally became less reliant on religion/dogma and divinity as a means for understanding the world. As Europe steadily became less reliant on religion, scientific knowledge, living standards, human rights, etc, all greatly increased. Denmark and Finland are not Christian countries. They, like the UK, are post-Christian countries that have become increasingly secular: less religious - to the point where religion is pretty much irrelevant and unnecessary to the majority of people's lives.

@@urbandesitv3529 LOL You have very poor sources and cherry pick what you think supports your argument. No facts. BTW neither you or anyone has any credible evidence that a god exists. Argument from popularity is not evidence. It wouldn't matter if 99.9999% of people believed in a god. That isn't evidence one exists. The best apologists can do is stick a god into the gaps of scientific knowledge and that god is shrinking and geting smaller and smaller. Also sticking a god of the gaps into the unknown is basically answer a mystery with a bigger mystery which is not an answer to anything. If you look into the ancient hebrews history of when and where they came up with their god Yahweh, you will find that he was a son of the supreme god El and one of his many brothers was Baal who they also worshipped. It wasn't until Cyrus released the hebrews from captivity in Persia that they adopted Yahweh as their sole god and then re-wrote their stories which became their torah inserting much from the Persian religion's stories. All religions are mythological tribal stories. FACT. As for christianity, there are no contemporary accounts of Jesus in history whatsoever. NONE. Jesus never wrote anything down. Nothing. Stories about him come decades and decades later and are written by unknown Greek scholars who had no first hand accounts and are likely religious fiction. Just in the U.S. there are over 900 former and current clergy enrolled in The Clergy Project which is a forum for clergy who have come to realize they can't believe in a god anymore. Darwin may not have called himself an atheist. But he certainly rejected christianity. Lady Hope's story claiming Darwin converted to Christanity on his deathbed is not supported by Darwin's children. Darwin's son Francis Darwin accused her of lying, saying that "Lady Hope's account of my father's views on religion is quite untrue. I have publicly accused her of falsehood, but have not seen any reply." Darwin's daughter Henrietta Litchfield also called the story a fabrication, saying "I was present at his deathbed. Lady Hope was not present during his last illness, or any illness. I believe he never even saw her, but in any case she had no influence over him in any department of thought or belief. He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier. We think the story of his conversion was fabricated in the U.S.A. I prefer to word part of this a little differently, what do you think? I feel that talking about "applying the principle of maximising pleasure to itself" is confusing. It toi easily tips into self-referential logic, especially with a bad-faith interlocutor. I would prefer to say "we shouldn't apply maximising pleasure short-sightedly to each situation but instead to the whole. Allowing ourselves, for example to ask whether having a principle of truthfulness leads to a better society, rather than in every communication deciding whether it would be more for the good to lie or tell the truth". Truth telling is clearly a case where the good is now to do with the longer term and societal consequences rather than the direct outcome of a specific event.
@tonycatman
@tonycatman 4 года назад
Many people prefer to talk about 'minimizing suffering' rather than maximizing pleasure. It is meaningless to talk about either unless long and medium terms are also considered. Our consciences judge us for what we did yesterday, and also what we did 5 years ago. We know this, and have a tendency to act in accordance with the way we would be judged. From an evolutionary perspective, our species would die out if we didn't act in a manner consistent with its collective well being. The conscience is an emergent manifestation of a working system. If you 'feel bad' when you tell lies, this is nothing more than your genes doing their thing.

@Rob Lowe In my opinion he needs to learn to say things whilst being less verbose. His ideas are fine, but the way he is presenting them come off as condescending and superior, whilst actually not presenting anything actually unknown to the audience (The kind of thing that results in being punched in the face, the same way he is arguing the implications of a thing being more meaningful than the thing itself). But hopefully with time this will happen. I understand the need for categorisation, but proclaiming yourself as 'An Atheist' just stinks of absolute ideology. Perhaps the word itself doesn't mean what it has come to represent, but claiming yourself as X in opposition to Y doesn't sound very enlightened or open to new things. I'm not sure why they don't just use the term Agnostic/Agnostic Atheist instead (except Atheist has much more appeal to an angsty youth audience).

I do find this topic puzzling - particularly the dilemma raised by Plato: "Is good good because God wills it, or does God will it because it is good?" If good is good because God wills it then it tells us nothing about good. It is simply; "might is right". If God wills the good because it is good, then it raises the question; is God bound by an external standard not of his making?

People do treat morality as if it is an objective fact, and not just a subjective idea. His point is worthwhile. And it does often lead to people doing bad things or justifying things that harm people and society as a whole. You assume morality is mostly or always used for good, but that is FAR from truth. It is wrong to speak of them as more then they are though, and acting like something that does not exist exists leads to a poor and less effective message then the full truth. This slippery thinking is one of the reasons why america is falling apart socially atm. Also, none of these stops religion from being absolute bullshit. Islam is particularly vile as no rational person can read the Quaran and not come out anti Semitic, tribalistic, and profoundly anti intellectual. I would suggest that you drop the "pleasure" and move to "value/goal satisfaction". Pleasure demonstrably doesn't guide out moral choices (nor our other choices) but in a subset of cases. The simplest example that comes to mind is wanting to find out if your partner cheated on you. Maximising pleasure would require not wanting to know, as knowing causes emotional and psychological pain, but we still do want to know, because there are other values that we want to satisfy, like not being cheated on. Same thing for remembering our lost loved ones. It's painful, but we actively try to keep them in mind and our pain alive, because the pain is the proof of the significance of that relationship, and that significance is more important to us than pain.

In your torture example, would it not follow that it would be "most" moral to secretly torture an individual for the overall pleasure of the group? Could this justify secret prisons that hold terrorists? I'm a huge fan of the channel and agree with you on this issue but see a small flaw in it.
@noname-zp1yh
@noname-zp1yh 4 года назад
Well then you're getting into more specific ideas of morality. Someone like a rule utilitarian would reply to that by saying that that sort of things would be immoral because although the torture of one of one individual might bring more pleasure to the group it is imoral because it would have bad consequences if torture was implemented as a rule. If we are okay with torture in that intance the consequences of that are that we will become okay with torture in other intances. If we torture terrorists it means that we have given the power of torture to a specific group and there is no telling whether that group will always get "the bad guys". But the main point is that the core of the values is still the same, maximizing human happiness and well being, the specifics come from what method you use to achieve that goal. Different methods have different flaws and the deeper philosophy of morality is about discussing those. But that fact is that most humans hold pretty much the same core values and people doing bad things usually doesn't result from their very core values being that different (carring about their ingroup and disliking injury to themselves) as it is about their methods being different. It's like the trolley problem, three people on one side two on the other. The answers someone chooses usually doesn't result from a difference in whether you generally value human life or not but what you are willing to giveup.
@gregoryyentz6241
@gregoryyentz6241 4 года назад
@@noname-zp1yh that makes sense, who decides who gets tortured? If there was a way to detect if an individuals torture would be outweighed by the benefits, then pleasure could be maximized. But no such way exists, giving the pain of secret torture the possibility to overweigh the pleasure of the community. And making moral rules that have the possibility of not generating maximum pleasure would make them immoral

There are hundreds of plausible models for atheistic morality, which is what Alex makes reference to in my quote. To brush them off so easily, even if you don't agree with any you've heard, is arrogant at best. To your argument from chance, I'll simply say this. You're talking about the chance this cell came to life by random chance. I agree, it's effectively impossible. What neither of us know about is whether there's another possible method (not pure chance) by which this becomes more possible. The fact is that there could be, and this area is understudied. The reasonable answer is to say "we don't know how it happened yet." What isn't a reasonable answer is to say "must have been a God" when you have no prior commitments to theism. I sympathize with a theist saying "it could have been God" but surely you can see how implausible that is from an atheistic standpoint, when there could just as easily be some other naturalistic explanation we just haven't come across yet.

Studying moral philosophy, particularly Hume and GE Moore, is precisely why I think you can get no objectivity in ethics, whether or not a deity exists. Without some arbitrary metric - such as a goal - there is no way to convert action into ought. But any selection of goal must itself be arbitrary or dictated by some prior goal for it to be the case one ought select that goal. So unless you're an epistemological infinitist, you're not going to be able to get to an objective morality -- and if you think you have, you're demonstrably wrong.

Morality is the maximisation of pleasure according to u, morality is subjective so it can have various definitions, but even if we consider your definition and the example of a human getting pleasure from torturing/killing someone, a guy likes to torture and the other doesn't like being tortured, if the guy gets to torture then he gets the pleasure and the other doesn't and if he doesn't get to torture then he doesn't get the pleasure and the other guy does. So how do you come to the conclusion that the second one is the better one, but ofcourse subjectively you can choose the second one but doesn't mean everyone has to choose the same option.
