Such a great platform for retro gaming. The combo of Athlon64 and a 6000 series has full driver support from windows 95 to Windows 8 64-bit too. Windows 10 32-bit will sort of work, though I've stuck with Me, XP & 7 64-bit triple boot. EasyBCD will allow 9x to be added to the Windows multi-boot menu. Also some of the 754 boards can run server memory and will handle 4GB DIMMS.
@MidnightGeek99

It really is a great platform, although my particular board supports max 2 GB, which is a big problem for Windows Vista and 7.
@awnordma
@awnordma 2 года назад
@@MidnightGeek99 The board may support server RAM. I have a few 754 & 939 boards and most of them will work. The max are 4GB modules, my A8N32-SLI, it will POST with 16GB (4x4GB). Though most my other boards don't have the correct bios settings to go over 3GB. My other boards working with server memory are GA-K8NSNXP and ABIT KV8.

GPUs, the scourge of retro PC building. After failing with the ati 9550, I got a geforce 7600gs and the first time booting it up, I got artifacts. Disassembled it, change the cement with fresh thermal paste (the 7600gs also has one of those bridge chips but it has a thermal pad instead of paste), boot it again, no more artifacts. I realized the card was hot when I picked it to change the paste and checking the temps in afterburner it was hot like it was under load. Found out the fan wasn't spinning. Now I have to wait for the replacement fan to arrive :))

That 6800 from ASUS can be fixed. Way to do it is to spread the flux around the edges of GPU, and use soldering station with heat gun. You need to set heat gun to around 300*C and heat up GPU around the die for around 8-10 minutes, constantly moving heat gun with circular motion around the GPU. Flux will melt under GPU and will form perfect BGA under the chip again. Usually there's problem with broken solder balls in these older GPU's, due to lead free solder that was used back in the day. You need to also remember to DO NOT hold heat gun in one place above GPU for more than 5 seconds, and to do not touch the card for around 10 minutes after you finished with it so it can properly set and cool down. I have resurrected few cards of mine like this. Hope that helps with your ASUS V9999. Have fun!
@MidnightGeek99
@MidnightGeek99 2 года назад
Thank you, this seems to be a common advice among tech enthusiasts. I've never used a heat gun to be honest, but today I fixed a broken pipe in the backyard, so everything is possible :) For this card I might be lucky, it seems that one of the caps has a bulge, I hope it's just this...we're going to see after I change it, I only need to find a new one.
@86smoke
@86smoke 2 года назад
@@MidnightGeek99 Just be careful with hot air soldering station. 8-10 minutes is FAR too long, I'd say 4-5 minutes is long enough. Also you must position the card completly flat, otherwise melted ball joints under GPU will move and create a short.

I've built two Athlon 64 Win98 machines, and not only are they great, but they can also dual boot Windows XP for increased range of games and compatibility. I usually use Socket 754 for these types of builds. I've also build 98 machines with Pentium II/III, Athlon XP, Pentium 4, and even a Core 2 Duo machine. Out of all of them, I think the Pentium 4 wins for raw compatibility, but Athlon 64 is close behind and offers more speed than you can get from most Pentium 4 machines.
@MidnightGeek99
@MidnightGeek99 2 года назад
I'm starting to entertain more and more the idea of dual boot, on this system, I'm very curious about what can be achieved using a good GPU, something from the nvidia 6000 series maybe. For Win98, Pentium III is period correct, Athlon / Athlon XP are very nice, but they have some quirks, especially with the power demands, Pentium 4 is the better overall, but Socket 754 seems a very good mix of everything...I can downclock this CPU to 560 MHz, which is epic.
@IronicTonic8
@IronicTonic8 2 года назад
@@MidnightGeek99 Right, I absolutely love how easy it is to downclock the CPU with Athlon 64. I used to dual boot back in the day when Windows XP first came out and wasn't completely stable, or compatible with some software. It was almost a necessity to have both 98 and XP to support all of the software I was using at the time. Ever since then, it feels natural to dual boot a PC from this era.

Yes the zalman coolers are so noisy running full speed - i tried the speed fan and cool and quiet - nothing worked - so i got a new cooler from aliexpress which is a 120mm fan (with someLED action ) a low profile 3 hear pipe model for about $15 and it solved the problem as it runs much quieter at full speed - not period correct but i didnt care as its a better PC now

Currently using an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Socket 939 Toledo CPU, on a purple ECS nForce3-A939 nForce3 250 motherboard, with 2GB (2x1GB) Kingston HyperX DDR 400 dual channel memory, an XFX 256MB GDDR3 6600 GT AGP graphics card, and a Sound Blaster Audigy SB0090 PCI sound card, as an early to mid XP 32-bit retro build (for certain XP games (MS FS 2002 Pro) and DOS utilities (Norton Ghost 2003) that don't like my Q9650 750 Ti XP/8.1 build). (CPU Cooler is a reasonably cool and quiet Socket AM4 AMD Wraith Prism RGB, controlled manually with an internal Zalman fan controller, which amazingly is still backwards compatible with Socket 939). The build is also still theoretically backwards compatible with Windows 98se, if I disable one of the 2 CPU cores, downgrade to my 2x512MB Kingston HyperX DDR 400 dual channel memory modules, and use Super FDisk & manual BIOS settings to partition a couple of Hitachi 160GB DeskStar 7200rpm SATA hard drives to act like 128GB capacity ones, with SATA to PATA adapters used and SATA disabled. Or, I can just carry on with my 512MB SDRAM PIII 800EB Coppermine AOpen MX3S i815 256MB FX5600 SB Live! SB0060 98se/2k retro build instead. ;-)

You are leaving the dream, that Athlon 64 X2 build is perfect for Win98 / Win XP dual-boot, I've also wanted to use a s939 build, but I did not have a motherboard with AGP. I agree, it's amazing that there are modern coolers that are still compatible with such older sockets, and this is also available for socket 775. If you want to go with the dual-boot route, I'd recommend using another HDD (IDE) for Win98, it's way simple and it will work like a charm. As a pure Win98 PC, that PIII is great, from my point of view, PIII is Win98's best friend! Also, with the FX you can enjoy some 3dfx glide goodness, although with a PIII 800 you will hit CPU limitations in some games.
