Born and raised in AC and neighboring Ventnor ... even in the '60s when the city started to decline, it was still an incredible place to grow up. I'll never forget getting to see Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Four Seasons and the Grass Roots at Steel Pier. And, of course, the Miss America Pageant, the ACHS-Holy Spirit Thanksgiving Day football clash in Convention Hall, the Ice Capades, learning to swim @ the Traymore, Tony's Baltimore Grill, White House Subs, bike riding on the boardwalk ...

... Million Dollar Pier, Central Pier, Steeplechase Pier, the High Diving Horse and Tony Grants Stars of Tomorrow on Steel Pier, Mr. Peanut, the old auction houses, Skee Ball, rolling chairs, the beautiful Marlborough-Blenheim, Carson's, Hackney's, Captain Starns, the Knife and Fork Inn, the old Atlantic City High School building, the monument, Bader Field, the list could go on and on ... an American Classic.

Last time I was in AC was the early 80s. I remember seeing the last of what this great city was. So sad.

What a great film - thanks for posting it. A great place for a kid to grow up. Arcades on the boardwalk, "Lucy" the elephant, the best Italian bread in the world, The best Italian water ices at Artic & Flordia Avenue, "Ape Man" (I think that was what it was called) , Million dollar pier - Steel pier. The White House Sub shop, I still can;t go there without stopping to get a sub. The only thing missing out of this film is all the Italian people on their porches as you walked down the steets.

All the Grand Hotels are gone now, and the Casinos have runined the special atmosphere that made Atlantic City so special when I was growing up. In the early 1960's the Ocean was so clean that you could see to the bottom. Without Steel Peer and the entertainment for the general public, this has not been a place to go for years.......

What destroyed Atlantic City was that when the casinos came all the privately owned restaurants and Hotels and clothing stores left because of the extremely high property taxes-the casino's were all about money and did nothing for the residents of atlantic city-sure they provided jobs but they also raised the rents-so in actually people were better off before the casino's and much happier

I did not know that infomercial existed. This was really a great view of AC. And maybe this could be done again and shown in movie theaters and other venues to attract people back to AC.

I was born and raised in nearby Margate. AC is definitely not the same as it used to be. The sweet innocence is gone sadly.

In World War 2 the soldiers trained in Atlantic City. It fell into disrepair until the casinos took over. Not the same today but that's progress. We used to spend every Easter Sunday there in the fifties.

There were alternatives. I know I grew up there from 61-80. Taking away the movie theater, bowling alley and all the family type of aspects of Atlantic City definitely wasn't the answer. Just a new corruption now.

Its too bad that the greed of a few allowed them to destroy all those famed hotels. Even if you wanted to you could not rebuild it the way it was. The architecture was just too grand and complex to re-create today. Those hotels were historic icons of their time and by 1980 they were all destroyed, the Traymore being the first to go in 1972 and the Shelbourne the last in 1980. A true treasure has been lost but some of us at least have the memories of the way it was in its Gilded Age.

The casinos didn't destroy Atlantic City. Cheap air travel did. Before that, this was a major place to go for New Yorkers and Philadelphians. When it got cheap to go to Florida or the Carribbean, people stopped going. The city had already declined in the 70s and the casinos were an attempt supposedly to revitalize the city. Except the casinos did nothing for it.

People who could go anywhere else still stay around Atlantic city. Therefore cheap housing is needed ! they cannot live in wood frame houses with mold everywhere ! and they cannot afford to live in new housing development. The government is too exhausted to provide any public housing. Here we go, just like everywhere in the world these days, people do need cheap housing ! One of the ways to do it is to reuse the shipping containers stacking them up, ten maximum, for housing. RU-vid georgewu5
