Atlantic salmon have been an elusive target of mine for a couple years, but when I set out to the Naugatuck River this autumn I was determined to finally land one of these special gamefish.
Though the wild ancestors of these salmonids may have gone extinct centuries ago, Connecticut's Broodstock Atlantic Salmon program stocks hatchery-reared specimens in two rivers each autumn to offer anglers a truly unique experience.
I actually had the privilege of meeting some of you guys out there on the Naugatuck River in the course of filming for this video. It's great seeing everyone out there enjoying Connecticut's waters!
Like and subscribe if you enjoy the video! And if you have any ideas for the next stream you'd like to see on the channel, or maybe some other fishing topic you'd like to see covered, comment below and let me know!

I grew up on the Naugy and been fishing that river for years. When I was a kid the river was so polluted the only fish in there were bullhead. Now the river is clean, is stocked with salmon, and even has a trophy trout section right there in Campville. Great fish, great video.

That's so awesome! Stinks that the natural salmon runs are gone in New England.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler Год назад
There are still natural salmon runs up in Maine, albeit small ones. It’s from those few rivers where salmon still naturally run that the “starter stock” for the restoration program came from. So the hatchery-raised salmon seen in this video are descended, over numerous hatchery-raised generations, from wild salmon stocks from Maine.

if you end up coming back to the river make sure you use barbless single-hooked lures i dont wanna be the guy who is always on people's case about it but if the DEP dudes show up they could fine you for it so just a warning im glad someone is actually making content on this area because i live around here and I think its awesome to see the places that I fish at on camera in your videos.

The Broodstock Salmon Area regs read "fishing for...Atlantic Salmon is limited to use of a single fly, or an artificial lure with a single free-swinging hook. Additional weight may not be added to the line." I was using single-hook flies throughout the duration of the video (in this context, there is no requirement that said flies be used on a fly rod), I didn't use any additional weight on the line at any time and there is no regulation requiring that hooks be barbless in these areas, so everything you watched was within regulations. I believe CTDEEP actually shared this video on the CT Fish & Wildlife Facebook page, if I recall correctly. I def appreciate you watching and I'm glad you enjoy seeing this area get some attention! You can bet I'll get back around there at some point this year, so keep an eye out.

Great! This area is 10 min. away from me, great spot, but many times it's so overcrowded that I just check how many cars parked and decide whether I even bother to stop. I haven't caught a salmon there yet, but plenty of large rainbows. Unfortunately many times I catch a lot of fishing lines and gear snagged and broken off in the rocks. Not sure what people expect, because sometimes I fish out gear I would only use for 30lb+ stripers...
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
That's certainly true: this area can get quite crowded, though I've personally found that most of the crowds last from Opening Day through June. Outside that window, things die down quite a bit, even though there are still plenty of fish to be had. You've just got to work a bit harder for them sometimes. And with regard to gear, I can only speculate that some folks are out there tossing huge spoons during salmon season, basically just tying them on to the same gear they'd use for largemouths in the lily pads during the summer.

@briancooney5739
@briancooney5739 4 года назад
That was great by the way
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
Brian Cooney streamers are more precisely called “streamer flies”, as they are generally intended for use on a fly rod. In fact, I use the streamer patterns you saw in the video all the time on the fly rod. But because these streamers have some weight built-in (dumbbell eyes), they can be used on a spinning rod with great results, as well. As for where you can buy them, most any fly shop will carry a variety of them. I should further clarify that, because these are technically flies, some streamers are tied without any weight at all; those can’t be used with spinning gear unless you apply split shot to the line, which is against the salmon regs in CT. However, if you aren’t fishing in a salmon area, adding split shot works just fine to make lightweight streamers castable on spinning gear. Oh, and when I’m using streamers on spinning gear, I don’t use swivels.

do you guys allow Centerpin float fishing for Salmon in CT?, when does the fish run start and end?
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
AllTroutdOut I can’t say I’ve ever personally known anyone to use centerpin here, nor do I know of how centerpin fits in with our salmon regs. Technically, some of the special salmon regs don’t really relate to specific rod/reel types, but moreso to the baits used (“single fly” or “lure with a free-swinging hook”). Honestly though, rather than have me speculate, it’s probably best to inquire with CTDEEP on specifically how you wanted to rig everything up. They could readily give you the green light or explain what you’d have to alter to be within regs. As far as the runs, there aren’t any. These are strictly stocked salmon that are placed each year during autumn in two rivers. Folks catch them fairly often from October through February. Seems to taper off after that point until the following stocking the next autumn.

Salmon can be harvested from the Naugatuck eventually, but there’s a C&R season first that runs from whenever they’re stocked in autumn (depends on conditions, but usually Oct or Nov) to mid-December. This video was filmed within the C&R season.

I am strictly a trout fisherman but would like to try fishing for Salmon. I live in CT and see that Salmon season opens up on December 16th. What do you recommend for a setup? I use an ultra light setup for trout just not sure what to use for Salmon.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
My approach to using spinning gear for trout (and salmon) is somewhat unusual in that I generally just use flies, especially streamers. Adapting streamers for use with spinning gear usually means adding split-shot for weight, but that's against salmon regs in Connecticut, so it'll only work if you purchase or tie streamers with built-in weight (such as clousers, for example). Now, if you prefer a more conventional spinning gear approach, I know folks have good luck with spoons and inline spinners, both of which can be purchased in a broad range of weights/sizes. Bear in mind that salmon regs here in Connecticut require that lures use only a single hook, so you'll need to pop off any treble hooks attached to the spoons/spinners and replace them with a single. It's also worth mentioning that the C&R season for salmon is already open, so you can head out there right now and try your hand. December 16 is just the first day that you can harvest.
@rivertherapy1606

Connecticut Angler thank you for the reply. Salmon fishing is definitely something that is out of my norm. I stick to trout using 2 lb test and a size 12 nymph scud hook with a meal worm and small split shot. I will have to look into the salmon thing more. Thanks. Love the videos.

The Connecticut is cleaner than it used to be, and many fish are viable, but not salmon. I heard a year ago? concerning pacific salmon. there is a chemical used in tires. when it comes off the tire, it degrades into another chemical that salmon hate. If this reason applies to Atlantic salmon as well, then hopefully a substitute can be found to treat tires, and some time in the future, atlantic salmon can be restored.

Those are Landlocked Salmon. Atlantic Salmon are Federally protected in the US and cannot be fished for. Connecticut isnt collecting Atlantic Salmon eggs and then pen raising them to release for fisherman.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
The confusion here is purely semantic. Atlantic salmon are just a species of salmon: Salmo salar. The species designation is the same whether they're returning to a natal river from the Atlantic, swimming in a hatchery pool or living in a landlocked system. Unlike the term "steelhead", which by definition refers specifically to a rainbow that has entered saltwater, the term "Atlantic salmon" refers to all representatives of the species regardless of where or how they live. "Landlocked salmon" is just a general term that can refer to ANY species of salmon in a landlocked system. So both Connecticut's Atlantic salmon and Connecticut's sockeye salmon (kokanee) are both "landlocked salmon"... but they are still representatives of their own species. That said, you are correct that the fish I'm targeting in this episode are landlocked Atlantic salmon. They can only be targeted in Connecticut's designated "Atlantic Salmon Management Areas" where they are stocked, which include a couple rivers and lakes. The tiny amount of anadromous Atlantic salmon that return to the Connecticut River system from saltwater (if any) are indeed strictly illegal to fish for by federal law and must be returned immediately if accidentally caught. Likewise, the Atlantic salmon fry/parr that Connecticut stocks in several smaller streams around the state, outside of the Atlantic Salmon Management Areas, are also prohibited to fish for and must be released when caught. I've bumped into them on a number of occasions while fishing for browns and brookies in smaller creeks.
@duanevigue1603
@duanevigue1603 2 года назад
@@ConnecticutAngler The Feds dont look at it as semantics. Atlantics are illegal to fish for, period. Unless a Salmo salar is ocean going and returning to freshwater rivers to spawn, its not an Atlantic. When Salmo salar are hatchery born and bred, theyre Landlocked salmon. Same species, but over the last 10,000 years theyve kind of become their own thing and thus the government and biologists treat them as such. Its sort of disingenuous to call them Atlantics. Theyre not.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
I’ve tried to explain it the best I can. The areas you see me fishing are literally, officially designated as “Atlantic Salmon Management Areas” and the state regulations for fishing for these fish refer very clearly to “Atlantic salmon”. You can write to the state about how they’re wrong, if you please. To be clear, the term “Atlantic salmon” has absolutely nothing to do with where the fish is raised or where it lives. These are the same strain of Atlantic salmon that the state and federal governments were stocking during the Atlantic salmon restoration project. Although the federal restoration ended, Connecticut decided to continue raising them for its own purposes.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
From the federal NOAA Atlantic salmon page: “Recreational fisheries are closed in the United States, with the exception of some landlocked fisheries for Atlantic salmon in New Hampshire, where fish retired from hatchery broodstock are released for angling.” They actually forgot to include Connecticut and Vermont in their write up btw, where it’s the same story as in New Hampshire. Notice that even though the fish are hatchery raised and landlocked where they’re stocked, they are still referred to as Atlantic salmon… even by the federal government.

This one fish might be the crux of CT fisheries Stocking, but the reality is, has been a failure for over 35 years....stop the nonsense
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
CTDEEP actively instructs folks that the salmon stocking they do now is NOT intended to restore the species. They have stated that, if such a result was realistic, it would’ve happened a long time ago. The current work that CTDEEP does raising salmon at the hatchery has three purposes. 1) Keep the CT River strain of salmon alive for posterity, 2) produce these big broodstock salmon to provide Connecticut anglers with a unique gamefishing opportunity that would otherwise be impossible, and 3) to produce and stock juvenile salmon in select streams in an effort to emulate more natural prehistoric conditions in which the presence of juvenile salmon in small streams would’ve been common and the biomass provided by them would’ve contributed to the ecosystem. It was neat being on a small tributary brook of the Farmington and catching brookies and juvenile salmon in the same water... sort of a cool glimpse into what fishing for salmonids on small streams would’ve been like if you could go back in time several centuries. But again, whenever asked, one thing CTDEEP expressly says they don’t expect to achieve is a restoration.
