Big Brown on Connecticut Wild Trout Stream - Salmon Brook East Branch

Ready for another challenge? I gave myself a paltry 10 minutes of fishing to try and catch at least one trout on the East Branch of Salmon Brook, a beautiful Class 3 Wild Trout Management Area (WTMA) in Northern Connecticut. This stream managed to beat me at my own game this time... and yet, as you'll discover, the outing turned out be anything but a failure!
Mind you, I've caught a slew of fish on the Salmon Brook system over the years, but they've generally ranged from small wild brookies to rainbows and browns up to maybe 15" tops. Nothing particularly large. Spoiler alert: that MAY have changed on this particular outing in BIG way. And this was a fight of uniquely challenging proportions...!
For those who are new to the channel, my 10-minute Challenge series is all about trying to demonstrate that catching fish in the Nutmeg State doesn't necessarily have to require taking enormous amounts of time away from your day-to-day obligations. With just an hour, maybe a half-hour... maybe even just 10 minutes... you can get out there and enjoy success! (Of course, some days are tougher than others.)

One other thing isnt crazy that the Farmington goes into the Ct river at almost the same longitude as it starts in up in Colebrook ? Its 47 miles long and flows south to Unionville then floes north back up to Windsor. But if taking into account its really 80 miles long if the Colebrook dam wasnt built to control floods after 1955 flood. But the Colebrook/ Hogsback dams are part of why it's so good for trout. Being a bottom release dam its waters are cold and it helps the Survive summers in Ct. for most seasons. Then luckily down near Unionville theres springs that add some cooler waters again. The biggest issue is the Rainbow dam at its end that kills any anadromous fish that try to return to spawn ! The fish ladder there tears the bellies off the Salmon and Shad that try to transverse its 60 pools upward to get over it . The ladder recently built in Collinsville is a goid start for returning Salmon but the fact is till Rainbow dam is destroyed or has a better and MUCH NEEDED new ladder built Connecticut will never see a Atlantic Salmon run sadly ! The financial benefits from doing such a project would reap such rewards to the state. Fishing is roughly a $450millon dollars a year business for Connecticut and would be double or triple that if it had a real Atlantic Salmon run. The restaurants,hotels and many other small businesses along the river would greatly benefit from it as would the state from sales of out of state licenses and the taxes which we have to vastly over pay in the state !! The federal government funds the salmon project which I dont understand why, but its funding does trickle down to other fishing programs which we do benefit from !!!

Thanks for making me aware of this spot. Fished there for the first time today and caught a 17 inch rainbow. As well as several other fish. Great fishery.

My go to patterns are variations on wet fly Hares Ear pattern. With a very short stiff front hackle. Wings range from wood duck, fox tails, squirrel tails, wood chuck, buck tail. Anything that really swims.

Glad you continued beyond the 10 mins, that was such a cool catch in such a cool spot at the end. You might want to consider getting some pitons and practicing rapelling before returning there though. :-) Great video!!!

Reg Thibodeau thanks for the input! I’ve definitely been considering creating a multi-part series on using flies with spinning gear, and the more I hear that folks are interested, the more I lean towards making it happen.

Incredible brown. Is that a wild one... sometimes you gotta climb and go thru bad stuff to land those fish. Great job. I know of several gems like that produce nice browns. Even here in pa . But. Ct has way less pressure. That's what I miss most. Awesome colors on that male nice job
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
Norman Lord thanks! As far as whether or not it’s wild, it’s tough to say. My gut says it’s probably a stocker that maybe held over a couple years. That said, this stream is managed for wild trout, so I can’t really rule out that it was born in the brook.
@paulpaul1815
@paulpaul1815 4 года назад
Stocker or not, that brown lived in that river for a couple years to get those colors. I caught one very similar in the Naugy that was at least a mile from the closest stocking point so I assumed that one was a stream born or holdover too. Their definately survivor strain so I'm gonna say it's a toss up. Beautiful fish of a lifetime.

New subscriber. I really like your approach to your videos. I'm not looking for any "secrets", but could you say if that waterfall spot was off of Route 189 or Route 202. I'm an adventurous angler always looking for smaller streams throughout New England. I use google maps of course and would appreciate a little direction Thanks. Keep up the great vids.

Me and a friend were planning on going to the east branch in north Granby. Do you know if this stream has a good population of wild brookies? Or any fish besides at this waterfall?

Grew up fishing those spots. Great town to grow up in, too many people now. Would be nice if they changed it to fly fishing only. Looks like the lower gorge?

@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 года назад
That's interesting to hear. I had been told that the local land trust owned the land along the stream here. And indeed, there weren't any signs that I saw when entering. Of course, I was moving upstream along the brook itself after that for a ways, so if the property ownership did change at any point, I wouldn't have known unless the signs were literally right beside the stream bank. Thanks for commenting. I'll have to look into it further.
@robertquinn9098
@robertquinn9098 2 года назад
@@ConnecticutAngler The land ownership does change in this area. There is a small section of land just south of the location where you caught that brown trout that is owned by a local land trust according to the town assessor map. I can understand how you would have missed the No Trespassing signs working your way up the brook. The signs are along the main road up the hill from where you caught the brown trout and along a street that crosses the brook just north of this location. Hopefully, one day the owners will donate this land to the land trust like many of the other local land owners have. It is a beautiful area. I do enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.
