Fun fact, when Milo visits the study of Mr.Whitmore at the start, there's a massive wall fish tank. Those fish in the tank are a very specific species of fish known as a celeocanth, which was thought to be extinct for a LOOOOOONG time but was only rediscovered a few decades ago. Its biology hasn't changed much since early history so it's practically the last dinosaur fish lol. There are some amazing documentaries about them here on RU-vid. I thought it was so cool to see them in this movie, in a millionaire explorer's fish tank! Lol

@@christopherb501 Well yeah, in the movie it's too early. But that's kind of why it's so cool to see them here specifically, because of the fact that Mr.Whitmore is an eccentric explorer who had ridiculous wealth, and the ability to discover things AND keep them hidden. So to think that he had already rediscovered a celeocanth at some point on his journeys and decided to just put them in a fish tank at his secret home, I think that's hilarious. 😅 Lol

You should react to Disney's treasure planet as well, it's equally good, if not better imo, than this movie, and they're both among the most underrated Disney movies ever made, and the treasure planet score by James Newton Howard is up there with the best of john williams and Hanz zimmer imo, I can't believe it's never been officially performed with a full orchestra live, apart from the recording for the movie.

There is a two hour BTs making of Atlantis on here that I'm guessing is pulled from the DVD of the movie and seeing their passion and drive to make this film with the core animation and writing team coming off Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback of Notre Dame both very successful films that had music as a key element and more drama based.

For reference, Milo is one of the older characters for disney at 36 years old 👀👀 Also the part of Kida introducing herself, i absolutely hate how disney fucked his character just to give her a nickname for the audience to use because there is no way, this man who has spent his entire life learning to pronounce/read/speak Atlantian would suddenly fuck up how to say Kidagakash! He wouldve said it Perfectly.

I think reading a language is not the same as knowing how it´s written when spoken, don`t tell me you´ve never heard any English word that you needed spelling for it to know how to pronounce it properly, because it sure happened to me in some languages I studied. Unless I had read that word or name before, I would still need spelling.
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian 3 месяца назад
Egyptologists learned how to read heiroglyphics and even came up with their own version of the spoken language, but the fact of the matter is, no one alive has heard the Ancient Egyptian language spoken before, so there are only theories on how words are pronounced. For instance, the word Ra. It could have been pronounced "Rah" or "Ray", Egyptologists chose to pronounce it "Ray" (I think that was a more modern decision, since I remember as a child hearing them say "Rah" but during a recent Egyptology course, I was corrected on the pronunciation). So yeah, it is possible to not be good at pronouncing a language that you can read, if you've never heard it spoken by a fluent native of that land and time.

They were showing the illustrations and designs for everything. So, I'll always have a soft spot for this movie. This movie basically got me obsessed with Atlantis from a very early age. Probably around 9 or 10 at the time this movie came out. It awoke something hidden deep in my spirit, and to this day I still research Atlantis. I really feel like I may have had a past life in Atlantis, thats how connected to it I feel. I can't really explain it. Its fascinating that the original story of Atlantis was handed down over the millenia and survived. The most famous example of course being when the Egyptians told Plato about Atlantis (or his grandfather? Dont remember exactly) and then Plato telling the story to his students 2000 years ago. Crazy to think that even during Platos time, the story of the fall of Atlantis was supposedly 9000 years old. Which now would make the story approximately 11,000-11,500 years old!

Like a lot of folks, I had a fascination with Atlantis growing up. The idea of a civilization with advanced technology lost to a cataclysm and forgotten by time is truly incredible in every way. Needless to say, this movie is in my top 5 for animated movies. It truly is a chef's kiss in terms of quality, story, pacing, and everything in between. The imagery is magnificent, and it truly shows what dedicated talented artists can achieve when they set their minds to it. While it may not have hit it big like other classics, it will absolutely stand the test of time and inspire generations to come who have a passion for adventure. The sequel sadly was given to the B-team and doesn't come close to the same level. It falls short in all respects as far as animation, story, and overall quality. That being said, I would at least recommend watching it at least once. While nowhere close to the same level, it does at least entertain and brings the group back together for another adventure, which is nice if for nothing else besides nostalgia.

I LOVE this movie! The only reason Kida is not in the official Disney Princess Line-Up (and is actually the FIRST Disney HUMAN queen - as I consider Nala to be the first "coronated" animated queen, even though she's a lioness) is because this movie did not perform well in the box office. Really makes you think about the others in the line-up. If their movies had performed poorly in the box office, they also would not be official princesses. This movie was definitely ahead of its time! Kida has always been my favorite Disney leading lady! Cree Summers' voice is truly perfect for this role.

This experimental age of Disney is just so amazing and I hate how little these films were appreciated when they came out which incidentally impacts their reach even today. This is by quite a large margin my favorite disney film and easily in my top 5 animated films period.

At my age, I immediately recognised Vinny's voice from the original SNL crew. Don Novello is a comedian who played a priest named Father Guido Sarducci on the show, with about the same accent. He also published his collections of prank letters under the name Lazlo Toth.

One of my favorite Disney films (easily top 5). 13:08 After the writers got finished with their last film (Hunchback of Notre Dame) they had lunch discussing what type of movie they waited to make next as they had also made Beauty and the Beast. Adventure films like that is what led them to make this!

This is one of my favorite Disney movie as a kid. I was honestly obsessed about the idea of Atlantis existing in some part of this world, because of the influence of Nat'l Geographic Documentaries about Ancient Cities. I also didn't know that it wasn't as popular as the other Disney movies, this was frequently shown in Disney Channel, at least in my country, and I always watch it in full every time it airs and so I thought it was as popular like Emperor's New Groove, Treasure Planet and the likes. Rewatching this with you made me realize that this is more of a mature content than for kids esp with the deaths. I didn't even notice that back then. But anyway, I've been seeing so much of your reactions and just realizing that I haven't subscribe, LOL!

Such an underrated movie! When I was watching this reaction, I kept marveling at how great Michael J. Fox was in the role too--just so naturally charismatic and expressive. I can't think of anyone in the current younger generation of actors that has that same level of effortless charm. This movie is just such a fun adventure and deserves more love and attention than it gets.

That last scene where it pans out, was called the most difficult scene in all animation by the directors. The last frame uses 18000 inch paper! This a great adventure film with amazing character details. For example, I like that Sweet opts out as soon as the king is injured. Kida may not be a Disney princess in the franchise, but she is a queen 👑💚 the crystal monster is the stuff of nightmares!

18000 inch paper? That would be 1500 feet. That's over 1/4th of a mile.

The action scenes in this movie are vivid memories of my youth. My family had gone to see some life-action flick, and I went in to see this one. For live-action movies, Iron Will's the vivid memory. It was the first time I'd seen something in the cinema and the races there are very well shot. Glad you enjoyed this one. And, yes, I agree re movie being a bad motivation.

There is a part 2 of this movie called Atalntis 2: Milo's Return. Another GREAT movie you should watch for an underrated kids movie is Road to El Dorado, stunning animation, sweet soundtrack and honestly kinda creepy in sections for a kids' movie. One of my personal faves as a kid that would still watch today is called The Pebble and the Penguin, a creative musical with great characters and parts that younger kids would find scary.

Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire truly the best Disney ever had a hand in creating and they through it too the side cause it wasn't in their vision. We don't get animation like this anymore, the passion of these films is what inspired a new generation of creators, hopefully we can live up to the legacy

I somehow didn't know Milo's voice was Micheal J Fox until like.. the last two years 😂 even though I love this movie. I've always loved this movie. Milo was definitely my OG animated guy crush 😂😂 Also pretty sure Kita's dad is Leonard Nimoy? Which I also didn't know until recently 😂 Dead "my cabbages!" This is definitely a movie I could sit down any time and watch. And I don't have a lot of those movies

Fun fact, the voice of Kida's father was Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock). If you like the look of the technology, you might consider Disney's original "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea."

Something curius about this movie, at the time 4:56 some strange fishes appear in the fish tank, they are strangely similar to the relicant fish. The curious part is that by the time this movie came out the relicant was thought to be extinct because there were only fossile records of its existance, it was rediscovered years after this movie came out. So the one who designed those fish was literally looking at the future.

I love this movie so much! My husband and I quote it all the time. Atlantis 2 is good too, but it doesn’t compare to the first one. It basically combines three episodes of a tv show that never happened. I still liked it as a kid though.
