The fish in the tank are actually ancient fish called coelacanth, they were thought to be extinct for over 60 million years but a genus of the species was actually recent discovered in the waters of South Africa around the 1930s I believe. When I was little and saw this movie I never noticed it before, it wasn't until I got older and more interested in animals did I notice it. A fantastic little touch in my opinion.

I've always loved this movie!! A few important things to keep in mind: When Kida's mom was chosen, her dad tells her to look away as he stares up at the light, causing him to go blind (his last look at his wife before losing her). Milo says that Kida must be around 8,500-8,800 years old. Due to it having been that long, I imagine the people of atlantis became more peaceful over time, as there were no human enemies to defend themselves against. When you have no natural predators or enemies, your sense of danger relaxes. I imagine that's why there were no warriors assembling right off the bat, as they haven't had to fight in a long, long time. (Also spears against guns is ... pretty daunting). Personally I think its possible Whitmore was never a "bad" guy, just a capitalist who thought they'd find treasure. He had no more way of knowing there were still living Atlantians than our expedition crew at the beginning. Given he was good friends with Milo's grandfather, who was very much like Milo and so must've also had good morals, I'd like to think Whitmore would have been horrified by the actions of his hired crew if it resulted in the death of a civilization. Whitmore was paying them to find Atlantis for a cut of the treasure, but the true bad guy (can't remember his name rn) was talking about selling the power source to the highest bidder.

Yea the 100 or 1000 years confused me for awhile too with just how Milo says it. But Milo says "that would make you 85, 88 hundred years old" so yea Kida is like around 8,500 years old so over 8 thousand and I assume the king is crazy older than that since the crystal prolongs their life span.

@taylorkatemc Год назад
My favourite fun fact! The supervising animator for Dr. Sweet (Joshua Strongbear Sweet) had only one issue when animating for Phil Morris's delivery of Sweet - Phil speaks as fast or slightly faster than Sweet does, and so the animator struggled to make it look authentic and fluid in fear that people would think they'd sped him/hisvoice/character up for laughs, Phil is exactly as rapidfire as we hear him when he's delivering Sweets' lines.
@taylorkatemc
@taylorkatemc Год назад
I'm sorry for the double comment, but I adore this movie so much. You'll notice at the very beginning when Kida's father tells her to close her eyes and look away, as to not be blinded whilst her mother is lifted into the crystal. After she is shielded he watches his wife in her last moments. When we next see him, his eyes are blank and he is blind; we can tell that he never took his eyes off his wife and, willingly, she was the last thing he saw before he lost (or, in some ways, gave up) his sight.
@taylorkatemc
@taylorkatemc Год назад
And Kida was spared because the crystal must always have a person of royal blood to 'sacrifice', in time of great need. It could not take Kida because she is the last of the royal Atlanteans, and would have doomed both the people and the crystal itself. I have liked to think that, because Kida was bonded to the crystal when her father died, his spirit was the one the crystal fully absorbed and it allowed it to be balanced, as well as return the Kida to continue the Atlantean royals, as one can't be without the other, it's a symbiotic relationship.

Atlantis is in the Atlantic Ocean. The location of Atlantis in the Atlantic Ocean has a certain appeal given the closely related names. Popular culture often places Atlantis there, perpetuating the original Platonic setting as they understand it. The Canary Islands and Madeira Islands have been identified as a possible location, west of the Straits of Gibraltar, but in relative proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. Detailed studies of their geomorphology and geology have demonstrated, however, that they have been steadily uplifted, without any significant periods of subsidence, over the last four million years, by geologic processes such as erosional unloading, gravitational unloading, lithospheric flexure induced by adjacent islands, and volcanic underplating. Various islands or island groups in the Atlantic were also identified as possible locations, notably the Azores. Similarly, cores of sediment covering the ocean bottom surrounding the Azores and other evidence demonstrate that it has been an undersea plateau for millions of years. The area is known for its volcanism however, which is associated with rifting along the Azores Triple Junction. The spread of the crust along the existing faults and fractures has produced many volcanic and seismic events. The area is supported by a buoyant upwelling in the deeper mantle, which some associate with an Azores hotspot. Most of the volcanic activity has occurred primarily along the Terceira Rift. From the beginning of the islands' settlement, around the 15th century, there have been about 30 volcanic eruptions (terrestrial and submarine) as well as numerous, powerful earthquakes. The island of São Miguel in the Azores is the site of the Sete Cidades volcano and caldera, which are the byproducts of historical volcanic activity in the Azores. The submerged island of Spartel near the Strait of Gibraltar has also been suggested.

Disney's Stargate indeed. There's a Tumblr post floating around somewhere regarding the similarities between Milo and Daniel Jackson, to the point it even suggests there may be a subtle -not-so-subtle homage to both the character and film. On that note, 1) SG-1 and Atlantis ran concurrently after the Season 8 pilot, so you can alternate episodes for the first three seasons (I always do); and 2) remember this movie's energy shield aesthetic. If some aspects of The Lost Empire are indeed a subtle homage to the OG Stargate film, SG Atlantis repays it with some "easter eggs" of their own, not least of which is this cool shield (minus the giants).

This film is HEAVILY underrated, this would have made a much better series! Imagine a whole season of Atlantis: the first half of the first season focuses on the road to Atlantis (we get to learn the characters more, see what motivates them, why they are the way they are, see this journey they are on and how dangerous it becomes; can they turn back, is pushing forward even an option, all those questions, as well as seeing bits of Roarke's duplicity), with the last half of the season focusing on Atlantis itself. I mean, the writers made up the whole Atlanetian language, they have to make use of it somehow! This could then have lead into the second season which we got tidbits of in Atlantis: MIlo's Return (which was a film made up of three different episodes for the canceled show), but greatly expanded! Heck, if one wanted to, they could bring Roarke back as a returning villian who survives using corrupted crystal energy able to raise an army of gas-mask clad soldiers to do his bidding. Could have been something special... one can only imagine

First of all, when I read the closed captions on this film, and it came to Milo, and Kida’s conversation, it turns out that Milo was saying that if Kida lived during the time of Atlantis’ destruction, that she would currently be 8,500-8,800 years old. Second, you know how Rourke says that P.T. Barnum was right? Just curious, what was Rourke referring to when he said that? Anyway, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is one of my favorite Disney animated films. I thought it was great how Disney took a more mature direction than your typical Disney animated movies. Also, I loved the Biblical references in this film like the book of Job, Thessalonians, the Tower Of Babel, and stuff like that. As for the characters, I loved them as well, including Milo, and Kida. Also, the side characters were funny, and charming. Just curious, was it just me, or did some of the side characters like Vinny, and Mole, and the rest make you think other Disney characters such as the dwarfs from Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs? Oh, and is it just me, or did Helga, especially with some of her facial expressions, look like say Maleficent from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty? By the way, did you know that the original draft of this film was supposedly going to be 2 1/2 hours long, 155 minutes to be exact? Okay, yeah, Disney animated films especially back then we’re supposed to only be around 90-100 minutes. Still, I personally think that movies like Tarzan, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire should have been longer than your typical Disney animated film, even if that meant splitting the film in to with an intermission like with the old live-action musicals like My Fair Lady, and Fiddler On The Roof, for example. Yes, again, Atlantis is one of my favorite Disney films. Still, I think that a longer running time would have probably helped develop the world building of Atlantis, and developed the characters more than they seemed to be in the end. Not to mention that that it would have been cool to see Whitmore’s supposed grandson (yes, Whitmore was apparently going to have a grandson that would have joined the expedition too). Anyway, I loved the score, and the animation too, and how creative this story was overall. And yes, the volcano scene definitely made me think of the one from Aladdin as well. Between Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and DreamWorks The Road To El Dorado, I thought El Dorado did some things better than Atlantis in terms of developing the world of El Dorado more. Overall, I will say that even if there were one, or two things that I thought could have made Atlantis better, I still enjoy it. FYI, Atlantis: The Lost Empire was directed by Kirk Wise, and Gary Trousdale, who also directed Beauty & The Beast, and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Anyway, great reaction once again!

This is such a great movie, and the visuals were fantastic, no idea why it flopped on the box office. I had the toys of the big submarine and one of Milo on top of an atlantian fish. couple of things: - The "shark guys" at the beggining were atlantians, not enemies, they were escaping the tsunami/cataclysm (I think you realised at the end, but just in case) - The atlantian warriors that suddenly appeared at the climax probably were during the beating of the king and the kidnapping of the princess, but remember the mercenaries had control over at least one royal member at the time, while at the climax one royal was dead and the other was taken away. Nothing to stop the warriors to try to rescue the princess at that point (when Milo showed them how to use the fish). - The friend-of-grandfather old guy did hire the same team (mercenaries) that took the book, but his motivation was to get proof of Atlantis, not to get their power source. It's likely the mercenaries were going to dupe him and sell the power source without telling him. So the old guy was technically good. Fun fact: Disney tried to make a cartoon series about these characters (the pilot was a sequel "movie" composed of 3 episodes), like they did for Lilo & Stitch and Tarzan, but it never really took off. I have no idea whats going on with the weird prolongued aging. Is Milo going to live thousands of years as well? Will the team (on the surface, but with cristals) gonna live long too? If the sequel series had started they would be on and off atlantis all the time, was Kira and the rest gonna age normally from then on? No clue

Yooooo you used the opening tune in the PS1 version of the Harry Potter and the Scorcer's Stone for your plug in, you are officially one of my new favorite RU-vidrs. Man I miss my childhood, played the crap out of that game, nearly beat it too.

What a great movie, I remember going to the cinema to see it as a child with my father, at that time I didn't know how excellent it was but now I realize it, although I always had doubts about the beginning, how did that tsunami arise? Did Atlantis drop some kind of nuclear bomb into the ocean and get out of control? Or did it happen in a war with another equally powerful nation?

Not very many movies start off with the disastrous destruction of an entire civilization. Especially not movies advertised as family-friendly. Yeah, this movie has a crazy body count! Tough lesson learned: It’s not Whitmore you need to worry about.

You should treat yourself to a screening of Stargate: The Movie, from 1994. This animated Atlantis is heavily based on that film :) It's a lot of fun actually, I highly recommend Thanks for sharing your awesome with us :) /Lizz

I'd second that. It isn't a full movie, more a collection of four shorter stories, as it was meant to be the pilot for a series, but the stories are actually quite interesting

Ikr 😂 I never thought it’ll lead to such a conclusion and that the shark Atlanteans are bad guys, Like aren’t the subtitles available or the voice isn’t reaching. They were saying “we’ve to warn the Atlantis.”

Uh... I tried to watch it and it was so unbelievably bad that I couldn't get past the first ten minutes. If you don't remember it being bad, watch it again as an adult and listen to the terrible delivery of the guy trying to sound like Michael J. Fox. You'll realize the error of your ways quickly.

I never liked this film because it wasn't a musical and didn't have enough fantasy elements. That said, I feel bad that its underperformance essentially had Disney making goofy films afterwards until TPATF.
