Jim Varney passed away on February 12, 2000, at age 50 due to lung cancer from smoking, before the production ended, and the film was dedicated to his memory. Producer Don Hahn was saddened that Varney never saw the finished film, but mentioned that he was shown clips of his character's performance during his site sessions and said, "He loved it." Shawn Keller, supervising animator for Cookie, stated, "It was kind of a sad fact that he knew that he was not going to be able to see this film before he passed away. He did a bang-up job doing the voice work, knowing the fact that he was never gonna see his last performance.

Fun fact: this movie has the highest death count in a Disney animated movie. When you think about the amount of crew they had when they started the journey and how many didn't make it. It's surprising how much they were able to get away with if you think about it, I think because everything moved at a quicker pace things blowing up left and right many weren't able to process how many people just died as they were watching it. It just goes to show you that there are some smart and flexible ways of getting around story elements like that in a "kids movie" or "kids shows" and the story actually being kinda dark or more complex then you'd think possible for something labeled for kids. A lot of animators of course know animation is just a medium for telling stories in general and shouldn't be labeled as something for kids only, I mean look at anime. It's just something that is generally thought in the west "cartoons are for kids" and Disney has made their brand on being family friendly or being for the whole family. So how do they appear to stay on brand while telling a complex and interesting story "for the whole family"? By making things seem vague to fly over the heads of younger audiences while adults understand. This doesn't always work if done wrong but if you hyper focus on making kids only content then you extremely limit your audience base and the movies have a lot less staying power. And in my opinion I've seen a lot of things "made for kids" that are so dumb and so obnoxious that it's super painful as an adult just to sit through watching it with your kid like I'd rather take a hit to the head knocked out cold with a 2 by 4 or bathe in a tub of hot coals. Atlantis is even a movie that I enjoyed more as I got older.

You make some very interesting and relevant points (I didn’t realize about the death count but it makes sense now that I think about it). I particularly like imagining the animator/ writers of this film thinking of clever ways to disguise some of the violence/ adult themes, that’s such a creative way to battle censorship and produce a story that appeals to adults as well as children. Well-said!

Theres a scene while the sub is being attacked where the engine rooms start to flood. Audrey seals one of the bulkheads and if you notice, not all of the men running got through before she shut the door and locked it. And the way she does it with no hesitation or regret. I mean you need to in that situation, but its kinda dark for a kids movie.

The first mention of the myth of Atlantis is "Atlantis nesos" meaning the Isle of Atlas, in Plato's Timaeus and Critias. It was originally an allegory for hubris. It talked about an island nation that's navy grew too powerful and that power became their undoing. In the story, the Atlanteans are portrayed as antagonists to Athens. (Of course, Athens was the biggest sociopolitical power in Greece at that time and I believe Plato was also from Athens, so they got put in the "good guy" role). Athens is able to beat back the might of the Atlanteans and, in the end, the Atlanteans fall out of favor with the Gods and are submerged into the Atlantic Ocean. (Btw, yes, this is 100 percent where the name "Atlantic Ocean" comes from). While Plato's story of Atlantis was a pretty straight forward, politically fueled allegory that served as both a warning and a piece of propaganda that gave out a kind of "don't mess with Texas" energy, the myth kinda started to snowball around the Renaissance and has picked up a lot of newer aspects. Much like a lot of mythology, this resulted in, basically, what could be considered Ye Olde Fanfiction and got conflated with the original text. Most notably, the idea that Atlantis continues as a functioning society underneath the waves somewhere. The notion is pretty romantic, but if you stop for a second to consider the purpose of the original allegory, it's easy to see that its a bit of a contradiction. I don't know about you, but I don't think that the Greek God's idea of "punishment for hubris" is turning an entire island nation into Aquaman.

Really appreciate this detailed and thorough explanation, it was not only informative but entertaining and fun to read! I had no idea that’s where the Atlantic got its name, and it’s funny to imagine the “gifted” people of Atlantis being originally portrayed as the arrogant enemies of Athens. Thanks a lot!

@@Kryptomi You do know that it's pretty easy to say you got something from some place and make up dates right? Fiction writers do it all the time. I concede that there is a miniscule possibility that Plato thought Atlantis was a real place and heard the story from someone else. However, the fact still stands that absolutely no evidence of any record of Atlantis exists pre-Plato, in Egyptian writings or anywhere else. Based on the information we have, it would be a pretty big leap to assume it's anything but fictional.
@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx 2 года назад
Well technically Plato gets the name of Atlantis itself from Atlas and the Atlantides (also called the Pleides). SO in reality it all comes from much earlier Greek mythology. Atlantis isn't even a myth, it's just a philosophical allegory that over eager crypto archaeologists spun into myth because they completely ignored Plato's 'job' as a philosopher. Had someone like Herodotus (the father of historical academia basically) written about it then it would make much more sense for this obsession to have persisted so long as it has.

Atlantis is, as far people who take the legend very seriously, wiped off the face of the Earth. It would be where we now have "The Eye of Sahara", as it matches the dimensions of the old descriptions of the city. There’s a channel called Bright Insight which has a really cool little series on Atlantis, and how The Eye is the most probable location to date. Granted, this also implies civilization started way earlier than modern historians would claim. As far geologists and archaeologists are concerned, mankind may have been *very* advanced prior to the Younger Dryas event, which caused the last ice age. That same event, over ten thousand years ago, is speculated to be the same event that wiped out Atlantis and the entire region surrounding it. If you look at satelite maps of the area, it really does look like a floodplain. It’s a fun thing to study. The reason why it’s easy to argue we may have been exceptionally advanced back then is simple. The Titanic, an absolutely collossal ship, has been underwater a hundred years. It’ll be completely gone in a few hundred years, no metal left. Imagine what a few thousand will do. As far I’m concerned, it’s not hard to believe mankind was potentially as advanced as we are now back then, but were brought to the brink of extinction by the Younger Dryas.
@nickreacts6394
@nickreacts6394 2 года назад
That’s very interesting. Crazy how the ocean can erode and effectively erase so much evidence in a relatively short amount of time. There’s something about the idea of an advanced ancient civilization that I find appealing/ fascinating… I’m not sure I find it highly likely, but is is cool to know there is some evidence/ facts that make it at least a possibility
@LethalOwl
@LethalOwl 2 года назад
@@nickreacts6394 It really is quite fascinating, even if it turns out not necessarily to be real - since it's very hard to prove anything that old, since only stone and maybe some bones remain. If you were to consider reacting to something else than movies, maybe Bright Insight's youtube series on the topic could be fun (don't think anyone's done that yet). Some other channels also react to youtube videos of various sorts, like SovietWomble's Bullshittery series or things like ssethtzeentach's "reviews", which are all amazingly hilarious things to watch. Bright Insight's videos are more fun for discussion-style or brainstorm reactions, I suppose, rather than just 'reacting'.

I don't know for sure the reasons why this movie didn't work in the US when it was released. All I know is that in France it has suffered of plagiarism accusations. Indeed, looked from far, the plot is quite alike the one of The Secret of Blue Water, a japanese animated series that revolve around a young african girl which has a magical blue cristal pendant which hold the secret of Atlantis, helped by a science nerdie blond boy with glasses, and the equipage of the Nautilus (yeah, the very Nautilus from Jules Verne's "20000 lieues sous les mers", with Captain nemo at its head). I went see it in theatre nonetheless, and I really liked it. The plagiarism accusations are at the same levels from those which had, a few years earlier accused Disney to have plagiate Jungle Taitei by making The Lion King. Yes, it could look alike, and there certainly are bits of inspiration. But it is as much a plagiarism as Star Wars is a plagiarism of Lord of The Rings.

Michael J Fox (Milo) was truly born to do animation voice overs; the Atlantean king is the legendary Leonard Nimoy (Spock himself!); the villain is voiced by James Garner a movie and TV favorite since the 60s; Mr Whitmore is voiced by John Mahoney, who played the dad on "Frasier'; Mrs Packard is character actress Florence Stanley; Jim Varney was Cookie; Vinnie was Don Novello, a "Saturday Night Live" alum who created the character of Father Guido Sarducci.

More specifically before Timaeus' speech, Critias narrates the myth of Atlantis, as supposedly Solon had heard it from Egyptian priests, who knew him again, because it was recorded in their scriptures. The narrated events take place 9,000 years before the time of Solon, when another, primitive Athens, repulsed the attack of the mighty island of the Atlantic, Atlantis. There are many theories about Atlantis. One of them is a theory that combines the legend of Atlantis with Santorini, the Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Santorini’s colossal volcanic eruption took place about 3,600 years ago that demolished the island and caused an irreversible damage in the Minoan society. Minoans have been the naval empire of that era, which bears a lot of similarities with Atlantis. So, many scientists supported the theory of Santorini being the lost empire, although the date of its volcanic eruption does not coincide with Plato’s sayings. Another theory is that its location might be in the Atlantic in the Strait of Gibraltar. I loved this movie and the myth as i am from Greece. Loved the reaction!! Keep up!!

Plato sort of wrote the book on Atlantis as a real place, and he isn't the only one to have written about it, but such a place hasn't been seen for thousands of years, so who knows? Actual, physical clues have been few and far between, as well as inconclusive. No one is even sure exactly where Atlantis supposedly was, although many theories exist, such as that of Santorini being the original site. Check it out if you're interested, and I think you'll immediately see why Santorini is one of the more popular theoretical locations of Atlantis. Many other theories put it out somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, which makes sense considering the names, although the two aren't necessarily connected in this way. Supposedly records of Atlantis had existed at the Library of Alexandria, along with the lost works of Homer, but even if that really was true, this wonder of the ancient world was completely destroyed at one point--a total loss of untold amounts of human history and culture.

When you see James Garner(voice of the captain) in movies, you immediately assume he's a good guy. However when you hear his voice, you know for sure he's gonna be the bad guy 😅 I love it

Can you please react to SANTA CLARITA DIET (zombie alert!), a really awesome brilliant show with ONLY 30 episodes (20min long) so you can finish it pretty fast! Joel & Sheila's relationship is AWESOME to watch, just love them so much! Drew Barrymore is such an amazing actress & we get the sexy TImothy Olyphant with his awkward smile in the perfect/worst situations... The beginning is a bit slow so please give it a chance, a few episodes and you will be hooked!

Fun fact he had a point about returning artifacts from museums. . .This movie just showed the actual issues of archaeological exploration. It looks harsh but artifacts in a museum ALOT of them were taken the SAME WAY. So when you said it's 2 different things that was WRONG. It isn't it's actually the same. . . .🤣😂🤣🤣 It why so many countries HATE major nations with museums with international pieces because they were ALL stolen. . . .and many museums are still refusing to return them. This one of the few movies where the ALL the major points in the movie are real and relevant

15:08 You completely missed the point that we should return stolen artifacts to their owners. Many countries around the world had historical or religious artifacts plundered during the age of colonialism (which has parallels to the plot of the movie), and western museums are pretty stubborn about giving them back, despite having no claim to them in the first place. It isn't all that different if you think about it.
