Wow! Am so impressed with the Flight Engineer who retrained as an FE after having retired as a Captain! Wonderful :-) Also very impressed with the sophistication of the INS and its corrections for course deviations due to winds etc. The history of the INS invention is a great story in its own right.

The original engine gauges made this cockpit look far more grand...they were the circular ones , followed by the bar type gauges as an optional modification . Also on all models upto the -300 you could tell it was a 747 anywhere you heard its radio transmission as there was a background humming type noise. Love those birds....ex Flight Engineer 747
@il_dalla

can I ask you why only Classic 747 have that humming-like noise? Is it something with the APU?

Crazy seeing how DFW looked back then. In just 20 years the whole area is developed, the airport expanded greatly, looks almost desolate in this video. Great throw back.

Agreed, I came to Dallas,in 1969, and remember going to Grapevine soon after groundbreaking when the entire area was open prairie as far as the eye could see! Now, its and intire CITY, I literally saw grow! Getting old was good, LOTS of memories here in Dallas!👍🏿

@@kentronchamelon8456 Like they do in this video with a flight engineer doing most of the work now done by the FCU. Look at any Just Planes modern era videos (i.e. 787, 777, A350WBX, etc.) and you'll see how much less complicated the instruments are today. Technological evolution on the flight deck.
@AA-or4dt
@AA-or4dt 2 года назад
Regarding primary flight instruments, people make a big song and dance about flying with ‘steam gauges’ and how complicated it must be, but they’re the same instruments you’d see on the PFD of any modern airliner. They’re just slightly more spread out.

Flying an airplane is very complex. All of those pilots are very intelligent. I know that a lot of work is done by the mechanics, the loaders, the airplane tower workers, and by everyone else to get an airplane ready to be flown. Thank you for sharing all of your great RU-vid videos.

@@Laurent312 having a full glass cockpit IS nice... But what usually happens is the owner/pilot doesn't get any backup gauges. (Due to cost, complexity or lack of space on the instrument panel.) Or, they have a standard airspeed indicator and an altimeter. And if there is any space left on the panel, an artificial horizon. Me, If I had a full glass cockpit, I'd still want as close to a six pack as I could get. The VSI could go away first, were I limited on space. But ideally, I'd want 5-6 instruments fed from an alternate source (static port and pito)

I am not a pilot, but I like watching aviation videos on YT. These old planes sure have a lot of clicks and clacks as they get ready to take off. So many switches, slides, levers, lights, and dials as compared to the newer automated planes.

I remember in the 1990s, when I learned to fly, when the plane I flew got a LORAN. Man, that was amazing! Didn't even have a GPS...a LORAN, which was about as good and 'automatic' as a GPS.

At 18:30 you see a good long view of the standard arrival (paper chart) aka STAR. I decided to check if it still exists, the La Grange arrival, and it does, as a procedure it's almost identical (a couple speed/height restrictions have changed, that's it). The way it's written has changed a bit, I see here the old paper chart has the Lat/Lon coordinates for every position right under every point, I didn't know this. All very interesting, thanks.

The ex-pilot who is now sitting in the Flight Engineer seat is definitely inexperienced. As he describes his APU panel you can clearly see the APU bleed air valve switch is closed. Proof of that is indicated at 4:00 where you can see DUCT PRESSURE gauge indicating ZERO. Yet he has his number 1 Air Conditioning Pack switch in the ON position. An Air Conditioning Pack can not operate without bleed air from the engines or the APU. He probably was a good pilot, but that certainly is a rookie Flight Engineer mistake.
