It is with no small amount of irony that a film series adapted from a book that fetishizes unregulated free markets... did terribly in the free market.
@imissdetroit
@imissdetroit Год назад
Because it’s a story of a woman of endless ability made by people and actors with poor ability. Ability=value. This is like a hallmark channel movie. But Hollywood would never make this. It is opposed to all of its altruistic collectivist ideals. The story exposes them for the disgusting, evil immoral looter lovers they are. Capitalism is the only moral political an economic system, because it is the only system which uses no force at all. Hollywood is entirely opposed to that. They need force, especially in order to use it for their sexual preferences against children. It’s really not ironic at all.

@@yosef2064 I think "trashy" is a little strong. Were they as good as the book? No, movie adaptations rarely are. They have declared in interviews they have done recastings to keep costs down, I know Kristoffer Polaha but the rest of them mean nothing to me. For most of us it should be about the story. The people who support the book will be supporting the movie if its close to the book but I really do not like that the huge age changes in casting. It looks like there are as large as 20 year age changes. A 20 year difference is the difference between a person hoping if 1 business deal goes through or if 3 of the 20 business deals will go through because you have learn to pitch more deals and stop worrying about rejection plus knowing your competition. I was going to use a dating reference but business is better for the movie and dating is shallow compared to this book and/or movie.

Just came back from the theater. As folks who loved the book, we went into to seeing this series of movies fully aware the limitations involved into condensing this massive intricate saga into three 90 minute movies. This is obviously a story best told in a mini-series. We found each of the three movies to be an admirable effort, with this one (III) being the best. The acting was top notch and the story was true to the book. As a result, the message delivered was as powerful as we hoped. LibertyPen recommends this movie.
@Wolfen443
@Wolfen443 10 лет назад
The acting was probably the only saving part of this one. The end was a bit contrite for sure, leaving it up to the audience is a real risk in the part of the story. I do not trust Modern America making the right choice at all.

@radeks6780
@radeks6780 10 лет назад
In my opinion it's the WORST of the three movies. It's really terrible. I don't understand how you can actually say that "acting was top notch". A few good actors who did it as if it was a weekend charity job to which they were forced by their wives. I haven't read the book so I cannot judge if it's true to it or not. But it's a movie, not the book and it should exist as a movie. And as such it sucks. You can easily tell how much action the creators wanted to put in there but time limitations of 90 minutes did what they did and the result is horrible. If you can't put everything in 90 minutes - either do the miniseries or don't put everything, choose what matters.

I'm going to watch this film because I'm a fan of Ayn Rand. Yes, it's terrible as far as production value and acting are concerned. But, Rand's philosophy is so poignant that it compels me to watch the film. I noticed that a lot of RU-vidrs think Rand's philosophy is garbage. Something tells me that these people didn't read her work, or did read her work but believe, with absolute conviction, that humans SHOULD NOT LIVE TO THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL. If you critically read her works, you will see that man working towards his higher self -- as an individual -- is paramount to her philosophy. If individual achievement is a value you do not hold in high regard then ,quite frankly, Rand's philosophy is not for you. Plus, you shouldn't have clicked on this video any way.

I have to say that all Ayn Rand novels and Atlas Shrugged especially are guilty pleasures for me. IMO, it's hilarious how much time she spends in the books explaining what she doesn't like (Communism, Socialism, Social Democracy or any type of regulation) and none at all to explain what she likes -savage Capitalism. Even John Galt's last speech is a lot like that. I saw the first film, but at that time it was thought that the second film wouldn't get made because it was a flop, and the guy financing it had had some kind of financial trouble or other. I want to see the second and third parts. I want to see how the film handles John Galt's capture and torture. SPOILERS AHEAD Rand's ending in her book was that the government finally captures John Galt and interrogates him. The economy is in such a bad state that they TORTURE Galt so that he would TELL the government what to do to get out of their predicament. They want him to become President in the shadows, I guess. When I read that I couldn't believe it and I laughed out loud. The question I'm dying to make is: WHAT THE HELL HAD Ayn Rand SMOKED THAT DAY?
@tomservo75
@tomservo75 4 года назад
Yes it wasn't the biggest cinematic masterpiece ever, and yes there were cast changes because the producers, probably very new to the industry or not knowing if Parts 2 & 3 would get made, didn't think ahead to sign people for 3 movie deals. That being said, these are only fig leafs. All the people below trashing these movies are being disingenuous. If you had a trilogy of those same properties above extolling the "virtues" of socialism, it would get undying praise from the critics. I'm willing to bet that most of the naysayers below have never even picked up the book or watched one minute of any of the movies or even tried to learn about Ayn Rand's philosophy. It's about the message of the movie itself which is very positive, but it talks about the virtues of not only capitalism, but a free mind and conscience, vs. government dictates, control, and collectivist philosophy. We're seeing Rand's predictions play out right before our eyes in places like Venezuela, and if we're not careful (i.e. we let Democrats get into the White House), the United States too. So I challenge anyone panning this movie to name one specific argument in the film that they had a problem with. They won't, because they haven't seen it. They're the same brainwashed populous who has been conditioned to accept that capitalism is bad, that the 1% "oppress" the 99%. FYI, the biggest villains in these movies ARE very rich and powerful people.

I can't help but feel that most mainstream critics just banded together to make sure that no one will see these movies, aiming at their obvious shortcomings resulting from them attempting to adapt a big novel into three independently financed movies (fairly low production values, inexperienced actors and a slow pace and dialogue (monologue)-heavy screenplays) while ignoring the story and the ideas they tried to tell. And many people, accustomed to high quality Hollywood-Stuff, simply jumped on the bandwagon.

Really? Most people's reaction has been that each sequel has seen an improvement in quality - chiefly as fans have put forward suggestions after seeing the train wreck of the first one. By the looks of this trailer they've reached made-for-TV level at least. The trilogy is pretty compromised though by the repeated cast changes and, I would argue, the decision to set it in the near future and make nods to Ron Paul, talk radio, etc., when what the adaptation was crying out for was a 1950s-inspired art deco setting; taking the Bioshock art style and making it work for the book's message rather than against it.

Was this movie an afterthought? I saw the first one, havent got around to the second yet. When the first came out it was always known that there was going to be a second part, but no buddy said anything about a part 3. This seems like one of those times where the first couple movies were 'official' i guess you could say, but then someone thought they could make some money making another so they licensed the franchise and put something out straight to dvd. That would make sense of why the actors are not the same.

You'd think a movie based on a book whose happy ending is the collapse of civilization for all but the fortunate, wealthy few would be a little better produced. What the hell was the budget on this thing, anyway? All they had to do is film a bunch of no-names portraying the super-rich, living in vast comfort, well away from the problems of the unwashed 99% like mass-starvation, anarchy - basically the apocalypse - brought on by the stupid poor's "ungratefulness" to the gorgeous, perfect rich 1%. It's unfortunate that only 1% of the unclean, un-wealthy movie-going public paid any attention to this series at all. Maybe all the 1 percenters who are such fans of that novel put their money together and make a series that somewhat resembles an ACTUAL MOVIE.

I really enjoyed the 1st movie; although, having read the book a gazillion times, I filled in a LOT of back story. The 2nd part was WTF?!?!??? The actors were totally different & no attempt was made to even come close to those in part 1. Went back to the book... forget the movies. :-/

Because the arts and media are utterly dominated by the left-wing who hate Ayn Rand and are accurately represented as the unprincipled, unethical and immoral government in this work. Atlas Shrugged is about freedom from fucks like Obama, the Clintons and the DNC; it's hard to get financing for that.

It was, at one point. It was being developed as a project for Clint Eastwood to direct, with a script by Randall Wallace (who wrote Braveheart). Angelina Jolie and Daniel Craig were being floated as Dagny and Rearden. But “producer” John Aglialoro-who had never actually produced anything, but had the movie rights to the book-kept trying to impose his vision on the project to the point that the professional filmmakers decided they didn’t want anything to do with the project anymore. Aglialoro was at risk of losing the rights entirely unless he had at least two days of film shot by a certain date. So he financed the first film out of his own pocket and scrambled together an independent production. Taylor Schilling wasn’t cast as Dagny until 7 days before shooting. You could write a book about how shoddily that movie was made. The experience was so negative for most of the people involved that none of them wanted to return for the sequels, which is why you see the cast change with each one.

I challenge ANYONE insulting this movie to name some actual thing about it that they dislike. All of the insults on this board are so vague that I doubt they even watched it. They just heard from their college professors that Ayn Rand and capitalism are evil and so they troll videos like this with no clue what they're talking about. Okay, it's not a high-quality movie in terms of acting, and it's a difficult book to convert into a movie. Sometimes the dialogue can be flat and one-dimensional. That's not why the fans like it. It also didn't have the huge budget because communist Hollywood studios won't touch it. Given all the uncertainty, it was hard to sign actors for all three movies and thus cast changes were made. Under the circumstances, I think it's about well made as it can get. That's not what has the critics up in arms, though. I'll bet 90% of those on this very board panning it have never bothered to watch it. They just attack it reflexively because of its message, about rejecting blind altruism and showing the virtues of capitalism and the dangers of government overreach. You who choose the worth of a movie based on its all-star casts and special effects can never understand that.

The filmmakers cannot even get a cameo right. What's the point of having a Ron Paul cameo if Ron Paul is just going to appear as himself, in his office, and he can't even be bothered to take down his Ron Paul "rEVOLution" poster behind him? Talk about jarring. Totally takes you out of the film.

The setting is not right at all. The actual story in atlas shrugged is probably set in the 50s-60s ( from the technology in the book and and the time ayn Rand published it) I didn't really think a movie adaptation of this book would work, mostly due to the large amounts of dialogue in the book. [ Think of d'aconia's speech at the party or John Galt's speech at the end] Atlas shrugged is, in my opinion , not a book that falls under the category of fiction , and hence can't be adapted into a movie. The movie does reflect this well.
