The second in Professor Jim Al-Khalili's three-part documentary about the basic building block of our universe, the atom. He shows how, in our quest to understand the tiny atom, we unravelled the mystery of how the universe was created. It's a story with dramatic twists and turns, taking in world-changing discoveries like radioactivity, the atom bomb and the big bang. All this forms part of an epic narrative in which the greatest brains of the 20th century competed to answer the biggest questions of all - why are we here and how were we made?

something went wrong when it was uploaded into youtube? That can't be the way the BBC would have put it up "IN REAL LIFE" .... As everyone has mentioned, there are parts that you can't hear him explaining important information .. e.g. its not when hes just ranting on about humans being "amazing"....

Man, my dad was a PhD in physics from Cambridge university and worked at Cal Tech in the 70’s finding quasars as a radio astronomer, and I’m just a lowly CPA. But at age 53, I’m becoming more and more convinced my true path should have been somehow in this incredible field. It’s a real passion of mine. I just got dumbed down by my mom the librarian considerably, so the math is just light years beyond my ability unfortunately. Stephen Hawking’s books started my journey down the rabbit hole about ten years ago and these vids are treasure for me, thank you!

Yes - but it's wrong! Or, at least, he's neglecting to tell you the important bits: they almost always repel each other - two protons can't coexist like that - but when they do occasionally 'fuse' together, a positron and neutrino are released causing one of the protons to become a neutron and the pair to become deuterium nucleus. I'm puzzled why Jim got this all wrong cos he clearly knows it....

There are way more ads on TV, and I would argue that RU-vid has vastly superior content. So in my humble opinion, RU-vid viewers are getting a pretty good deal.

Dan Jones, you have to do something about this. Why not just get rid of the music? It does not contribute anything but noise.

Great series. Thanks for taking the effort to walk us through the history of modern physics. Anyone baffled by 21st century news flashes about what is coming from Cern is well advised to watch this series to understand the background of the current questions that modern physics is grappling with.

FORMULATED WAX WILL SAVE MILLIONS OF ANIMAL AND HUMAN LIVES ………. If we don’t fix our broken planet soon we will be leaving our children in a world where humans will be at the extinction level, including all living creatures on our Earth. because mankind since the beginning of the industrial revolution have been poisoning the air that we have been breathing for all these years. The many poisons are uncultivable and are accumulative within the body, such as the world-wade spread of the long half-life radiation escaping from Nuclear power plants, radioactive exposed waste material and leaking structures and buildings structures housing radioactive material. A natural cause of cancer and early death is from breathing into your lungs Radon Gas that kills over 21,000 every year, it seems that most humans are unaware of this because just like any radiation, you can’t see, smell, or hear, you only feel the results, which is a painful slow death. and it is here to stay unless mankind puts a stop for it NOW and not let our children have to deal with it in the future, but it is almost too late. The Carbon released into the atmosphere from industrial smokestacks has darkened our skies and settling on the ice and snow thereby absorbing the heat of the sun causing the melting resulting aiding the sea to rise. These problems can be solved only by the overlooked subject of formulated wax. Wax is one of the most overlooked subjects in the world for its use in solving most all mankind created pollution. This will be the only text written on this subject, Environmental scientists are trying to solve highly technical problems without success. They must look backwards to solve today and the future pollution using simple, noncomplex, basic non-technical, just elementary thinking. If we do not act now, the accumulated pollution will become irreversible by the time our children are grown up. When they are, they will force the arms of governments to implement these confirmed solutions. . Formulated wax has been demonstrated in Chernobyl showing how to prevent Plutonium dust particles from escaping into the environment through open seems in the shady steel constructed Sarcophagus of Chernobyl’s blown out reactor # 4 It was also demonstrate showing how to cocoon buried highly radioactive rusting steel to then be re-buried for long safe burial thereby preventing the rust from transmigration into the water table, and if not cocooned the rust particles will transmigrate through the ecosystem. Plutonium, PU 239 has a half-life of over 24,000 years and not going away in our lifetime or our grandchildren and for generations before them. So again, we must act now. Formulated wax has even been demonstrated showing how to remove crude oil or any type of fuel including gasoline from water, beach sand and rocks in a very short time. View, Wax For Oil Spills on RU-vid to see demo. The list goes on for formulated wax uses and its proven achievements. Formulated wax if used properly, will save millions of human and animal lives. Lastly, in 1958 I discovered and coined the word, WAXOGEN which can be used as a rocket fuel in the future Willy Nelson waxogen@gmail.com

Why is the background music so overwhelming that it drowns out one of the best explainers I've heard talk (softly) about physics or astrophysics? When he starts out on a new subject or explanation, I hear let's go to.... and as he begins to talk loud noise begins. Is it that he is not certain about this new area and the loud music (noise rather then the welcome sound of soft music) covers the uncertainty?. Also I have always wondered that if gravity is the weakest force by far, then do black holes munch on stars with all its much stronger forces. I know the forces are judged on the scale of tiny spaces, but black holes are small in the beginning. Also, black holes can increase to be very large where the nuclear forces remain in small spaces? The background noise heard during the antenna project built at Bell Labs reminds me of the background on this and many of his videos.

Having read all the comments on the loudness of the background music, I now feel the odd one out. Watching the video, I was so immersed in the wonder of the science, the passionate and articulate presentation of Jim Al-Khalili, that must have been completely deaf to the music; almost as weird as Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.
