Turning up the right speaker / turning down the left makes the sound of this video somewhat tolerable.

It's not "the sound guy"; it's whoever ripped this documentary and uploaded it to this channel. They not only screwed up the stereo downmix of the sound, they also strip the production credits from *everything*. Yes - but it's wrong! Or, at least, he's neglecting to tell you the important bits: they almost always repel each other - two protons can't coexist like that - but when they do occasionally 'fuse' together, a positron and neutrino are released causing one of the protons to become a neutron and the pair to become deuterium nucleus.
