And my, old, old QUESTION : Why all quantum chemistry teachers cannot find a way to make so clear, logical, simple, precise and well "sci-spoken" & non-copy-paste presentation ?! Brilliant work, old pal !
I struggled my first year of chemistry in college because I couldn’t “picture” what we were talking about. I am a very visual learner, and it just didn’t really click for me. Thankfully, I was able to get all kinds of additional support outside of class and ended up graduating in chemical engineering. But that first year was rough. It actually wasn’t until I took a quantum physics class that all these orbitals made sense, because I finally was told these are just probabilistic positions of the electrons, not a physical representation of them.
At age 63 I've discovered physics and watch stuff like this with wonder. I feel wonder also at the genius of those who worked it all out and at all you students who are struggling with this. I barely understand anything about this world I've realised.
Even I can tell bcoz I was one. I remember how much time I wasted just to figure out the reality until I realized in class 12 that they are wave particles and not particles entirely. It still amazes me how in p, d, f orbitals electrons decide to leave space and dont pass through nodal planes
I still have some doubts. Like what is that 'n' . Ik it's called principal quantum number. But like is it like the different orbits of same Atom? Or for different elements. Its so confusing and unimaginative. Hence I m not able to visualize it fully and it doesnt make sense to me
@@sanjeev546 Yes its principal QN. This decides the size and energy of an orbital. you would've noticed in 2s and 3s the only 2 differences are 1. the size has increased 2. there is once extra radial node/ total node (S orbital doesn't have any angular node). We are talking about orbitals here and not orbits. Orbitals is the probable location of finding an electron schrodinger had found out the locations where the electron was travelling (We cant get the exact location cause of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle) and it made structures like these. it was calculated for different orbitals (3 QNs were derived from the Schrodinger Eqn) and it formed such shapes. The shape of orbitals only depends on n and l. s will tell size l will tell shape and with the help of both you get nodes. nodes is the region where you wont find an electron or the probability is very less. if you observe lets say 3s orbital you will see there is a partially empty ring like region. That region is called node (Radial node in this case). I think that should be it? IIT Professors will teach us even better in QMM. See you there :)
This is so far the most precise presentation of these orbitals youtube ever have, I think. Thanks for adding f orbital too as our teachers call it a complex one to get.
This is the most helpful video I found on orbitals. Seeing their proper 3D shape with all probabilities is so much more helpful than just the lobe diagram
Excellent animation! Thank you. I wish I had seen that at school. But at that time we only had 6502 based text terminals. Nothing that could have generated this level of detail.
Our schools teacher didn't teach like that. First time I actually understand what an orbital is . I am also disgust convincing that how much I missed these lesson in college life.
i’ve also started to realize how orbitals relate to sounds and light so it’s easier to comprehend if you can observe it and imagine it like a wave spreading
This is an excellent teacher's resource. I wish I had access to something like this when I was doing year 11 Chemistry in 1966! The teacher I had did a shockingly bad job at explaining this to us.
it's incredible to think that this feels so separate but as we all watch this very same process is happening to everything, your computer, your keyboard, your body, your reality. it's really interesting to say the least
This is the BEST visual representation I've ever come across in my 19 years of being a Physics-student! Why call myself a "student"? Cause I still know NOTHING and I'm still learning despite being a successful engineer!
Very nice work. Beautifully illustrated and brings back fond memories of my physical chemistry I learnt in high school in the late 1970s. Well done... much appreciated.
Two magnificent beauties indicated here: 1. That my mind sees these orbitals as soothing and glorious, though I don't know how to use them. 2. There are people who know precisely how to use them.
@@arshilahmedxc4503 Existentially nothing like orbitals exist. Atoms are the way they are. They just are, unconscious, which somehow leads to making of this entirety. "Orbitals" is one of the ways how we humans attempt to see their way of functioning in a way it pleases our purpose. And yes, accordingly to the concept we humans have come to understand and accept as per the quantum mechanical model, the different orbitals are overlapping, bigger ones fitting smaller ones inside them. (This is my observation over the years including this video.)
I have another question Orbitals overlap each other Like 2p overlaps 1s and 2s, not entirely but to some extent does the over laping increases the probability of finding electron in the overlapped region By the way thankyou so much for answering
@@arshilahmedxc4503 Undoubtedly yes! In actual, there are way too many questions one can ask which have not been clearly/openly discussed in the texts we usually find (as XI students). See it this way: at Infinity the probability of finding electrons tends to zero. Similarly, as you come closer to the lowest energy levels the probability of finding electrons is the highest (taking nodes in consideration). As for all orbitals the maximum probability concentrates closer to the centre and generally decreases as we move away(zero at nodes). So, yes overlapping does increase the chances of finding electrons in the region. Always happy to answer.
The electron probability patterns are hyperboloids, vortices and toruses. The shapes of Aether are hyperboloids, vortices and toruses. The Scalable Aether Universe!
Fun fact: If the core of an atom (protons and neutrons) would be the size of a tennis ball, the electrons would be orbiting in a 5 km sphere around it!
Excellent video. When learning this lesson in school lot of students find difficult in imaging this shapes in 3d space. These are very confusing. But this video explains it more cleary. Thank you for this effort
literally usefull a lot; always used to imagine it now its more clear. Thanks. and thanks god for suggesting this video even after 3 years of uploading.
I don’t think of the cloud as an area where you are likely to find the electron. It IS the electron. And because it is an oscillation of potential, sometimes it is “there” and sometimes not. But that oscillating “cloud” with its lobes IS the electron. QM immediately starts to make more sense this way.
Can this animation be continued, say, if the screen was big enough and the computer was crunchingly able to cope with the increased demand, to display more and more energy levels or shells of larger atoms. It would be visually mind boggling. Thanks for this excellent video..
Thank you for this, our teachers in india only focus on making the students cram this stuff so they get more marks. Your video helped me understand this better
I am a millennial and we didn't have u tube during our pre graduation days.....before 18 We had to rely on coaching classes. Today's students are so lucky
Amazing! Especially the arrangement of electron cloud shown in the animation is extremely good. Suggestion:- It would be extremely good if you mark the shapes of orbitals by outlines alongwith electron clouds. Some students might find it difficult to understand the shapes by seeing electron clouds only. Keep it up ☺️
Those "x/y/z" variations (eg. 2Px) arn't those just different rotations in 3D space? or is the rotations in relations to some other property of the atom that is "fixed" to the atom itself? (For example, Earths magnetic field is fixed to the planet itself, if you (somehow) rotates the planet, then (probably) the magnetic field also rotates, is there some similar properties on atoms? Or is all these "x/y/z" variations just the same, but the atom just happened to be turned sideways when you measured it?) (hope this explanation is clear enough?)
Fantastic, thank you. Everyone tells me I'm smart, and I say "no I'm not." This video proves that I am not. Great work, departamento de fisica, universidad de burgos
Wish when I first took science (Chemistry over here) they had taught in a similar manner. As I was always confused about what the heck even I was drawing or reading. So frustrating to think back but anyway at least thanks to this video how simple things can be if appropriately projected.
