Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) - Piano Trio no.2 in C-Major, op.87
1. 00:15 - 09:38 Allegro
2. 09:50 - 18:16 Andante con moto
3. 18:30 - 23:00 Scherzo. Presto - (Trio). Poco meno presto
4. 23:05 - 28:45 Finale. Allegro giocoso
Brahms wrote the first movement of this piano trio in 1880, and finished the other movements in summer of 1882. Neighboring works are the Piano Concerto no.2 op.83 and the first String Quintet op.88, among others. When Clara Schumann heard Brahms perform his op.87, she noted: "...unfortunately, his own playing is not much anymore but grappling, pushing and shoving." She particularly disliked the first movement and had doubts about its structure and the sheer mass of ideas, many of which seemed to be left undeveloped.
With its melancholic slow movement with Hungarian undertones, its darkly hushed Scherzo and humorous and brilliant Finale, the C-Major Trio op.87 has become a favorite of many audiences since.
