Leah from See Jane Drill shows how to attach a metal water supply valve to a plastic CPVC plumbing pipe, including what to do if there isn't enough pipe coming out of the wall to just mount the valve on it.

Finally a video describing what to do if water supply pipe is too short after trimming for new valve. Very clear instructions and video. 5 stars.

I bought the same brand glue and primer, somehow already had the exact fitting you showed. I was faced by the very same problem needing to extend the stubbed out cpvc pipe. Your explanation was brilliant, complete and crystal clear. I am delighted with my results and my wife thinks I am a genius. Truth be told, you are the genius!! Thank you David Winston Salem, NC

Ran across your video while searching for a repair job. Thought I knew how to do it, but checked. Saw some of the comments, but some that gave different opinions, maybe haven't done an actual repair job. Jane you did it perfectly correct, did a great explanation, reasoning in the complete job. Perfectly done, for anyone to do! I've done it before, the same way on an outside faucet that broke. Thank you for taking the time and material, to make a video. God bless!

Excellent instructions. I sat for a year staring at the "rough in" that I had for a laundry tub and knew there was a missing part and you've shown me what it was- slip on adapter. Since this was a new home I thought that they would have made it easier to add the tub by having the metal connector already attached to the water lines.

Great video! Easy to understand and it explanations and answers a lot of questions I had. I am replacing a.few shut off valves under the sinks and my biggest fear is ending up with not enough cpvc pipe coming from the wall. Also when I do the shut-off valve change I will definitely use the method you used with the adapter. That way, in the future, I won't have to worry about cutting the pipe.
@jeffreyspence2510

I love the slip on adapters. The pipe coming out of the wall would become shorter every time I installed a new slip on cut off valve. With this adapter, I can just unscrew the faulty valve and screw on a new one/ Thanks. You ROCK>

I like cpvc and use a pipe cutter usually used on copper. Fastening the coupling to pipe, I am no plumber but the directions suggest applying the cement as to not create a pudding(not liberal) on the pieces to be fastened together. I thought the primer was really a cleaner. Just needs to be clean of ink, debry, chemicals, oil, dirt and water. Other wise just use the cement lightly and the joint goes together fast and tight and sealed. Thanks good vid.
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 6 лет назад
When using primer and cement you're creating a chemical weld that fuses the two adjoining member together. The primer helps to soften the outer surface to help create a better weld.
@tsherwoodrzero
@tsherwoodrzero 6 лет назад
Before primers were created, plumbers would roughen the pipe's surface with sandpaper, then apply cement and join together. I've done it and it works just as well as primed joints. Take a look at both primer & cement's ingredients and you might be surprised at how similar they are. Pretty cool what we can learn from history :)

Question about "the twist". Do you twist as you push the coupling onto the pipe, or after you've held it for 30 seconds?

Hello and thanks for sharing this educational video. I have a question, I am currently living in a different country, and I've noticed that the primer is never used here just the cement. I have also noticed that plumbers here use sand paper on the pipe and joints before applying cemment. Do you know if this causes a weaker bond? or does it make a better bond?
@seejanedrill
@seejanedrill 9 лет назад
Fernande Arce Hello Fernande, it doesn't affect the bond, as long as the pipe is properly prepared. The sanding is just a way of removing the grease and the dirt prior to applying the cement. Keep in mind that the cement is really a solvent that melts the two pieces together.

What a timely video! I am in the process of debating whether doing a whole house repipe with pex B piping due to the chemical leaching/chlorine reactivity with some of the pex A pipes. But I was hesitant of the longevity of slip on couplings used for transitioning. Saw another youtube video showing fails of cinch clamping methods around the 10 year mark in many homes in his area, so now I am considering the good old cpvc as my pipe of choice. Leah, is there anyway you can show how to glue together the connections made at the entrance where the water main comes together to meet a ball valve shutoff valve for the whole house, that meets a tee with one side for the garden spigot and the other to go into the house as the inlet supply?(without any soldering, of course) If you can, that would really boost my confidence as I get ready to tackle on this project. Also, can one use cpvc pipes to make a diy manifold for both the hot and cold water supply like with a pex system so I can put a shutoff valve on each main pipe at the manifold and can test each individual pipe's water pressure as well as turning off water supply ( to certain areas of the house where pipe won't be insulated in the attic) on the really cold nights without having to go outside to turn off water main fearing bursting frozen pipes? Thanks a lot for your videos.
@josephkohn5789
@josephkohn5789 6 лет назад
Chlorinated water makes cpvc brittle. Pex is better. Don't use cinch clamps. Use copper crimp rings with a quality crimp tool and DO use the gauge that comes with the tool to ensure you're not overcrimped or undercrimped. Manabloc/ home run arrangement is best.

I have been searching all over for a video like this. Just change a toilet that has cpvc and the old line is to short for the new toilet. My only issue is that they placed some kind of metal ring where the pvc meets the compressor and I don't know how to remove this metal ring. So the toilet is unusable. Can anyone help?

How come my 1/2 inch threaded valve won't thread all the way around the 1/2 cpvc adapter? I could only get 4 turns even with a wrench...I added tape and pipe sealant and it still leaked. Ended up buying a valve that can be glued to the cpvc pipe.

Thanks for another very helpful video. I tried to use an extension hose with the wrong type of threads (I didn't know that at first) so I wouldn't need an angle stop (I installed a valve along the pipe), but I will take your advice here. Do you know, if the end of the (plastic) sink shank is stripped or threaded wrong, will using the pipe cutter to cut off a little of the end fix that, or will that screw it up worse?
@seejanedrill

I would just go ahead and buy a new fitting. They are inexpensive.

I bought the standard sink supply hose, and it screws on tight. I found a FIP 1/2" to comp 3/8" adapter that cost half as much as the angle-stop, I will use that since there is already a gate valve on that line under the sink. Thanks for your advice.
