It’s a very odd show in that it was both character driven and plot driven. The plot elements were boiled in so early and it was clear there was a gravity pulling us there on rewatches from the very beginning, yet still so much of the show came from the emotions and struggles of the characters. I think it did a good job of tying its mechanics to the emotions of the characters so they can flow together. I feel like that always what makes a good story since it’s kind what we all want. We don’t just want our existence to mean something but we want our feelings themselves to mean something, for our stories to mean something, for our feelings themselves to shape the world. Any story that creates a device where the feelings of the characters are so deeply entwined with some sort of fantasy mechanics is always going to be impactful
@differentbutsimilar7893
@differentbutsimilar7893 5 месяцев назад
I can get behind that at some point, less in others. Eren's characterization is a frustrating mess for me. Early on it's great. Everything past that made me feel like Isayama didn't know what he wanted Eren to be in his story. I feel like there are some big lessons to learn in scope and planning. It just kinda felt like he didn't like where things went towards the end, and couldn't fully solve it. Which resulted in an ending that really let down a lot of people. Eren's characterization, and the ways that different characters reacted to him (especially given the motivators of theirs that were made known to the audience) really cheapened some major plot points for me. So much tension was taken out of it all by that. I just see a lot of deeper concepts on the table that got shelved because Isayama couldn't or didn't want to go all the way there with it, and so went for the next big twist until he cornered himself a little bit and found himself needing to compromise on what would crop up in the end. They also have a nasty habit I noticed with characters. A lot of the things about them that you're supposed to believe are true of them, are never displayed in the characterization itself. They leave it to the characters around them to react to THAT character, the way the writer wants you to see that character. Another bother is kind of just moving on from tense moral dilemmas. What is something a character would never do in one episode, becomes something they do like its normal the next. And only in a few particular instances with very plot-centered characters is the transition ever explored. They just one day start operating like different people. And there are plot points you can look to for why, but it feels unsatisfying. Again, I think this is a matter of planning your characters. There are a lot of points where I think he changed characterizations just to serve the plot advancements he came up with, at the expense of plot cohesion and character relatability. By the ending, we are nearly Evangelion levels of "what, why, and how?" That's my take anyway. There is a lot about the character writing that worked really well on me before the first big twist, when the plot was more like a normal shonen. As soon as the Code Geass style political suspense plotlines came in, it felt like none of the characters were really fitting their roles anymore and it became hard for me to have a consistent picture of any of them. It became sort of a neverending stream of people saying and doing stuff just to get to the moments Isayama wanted. I all but lost the characters to the plot. And that was when the plot was still adding more characters! My one wish is that he gave fewer characters more time. If anything, most of the mid to late characterization felt rushed and for me didn't do nearly enough to justify itself. He pulled out a lot of very heavy historical, philosophical, and sociopolitical ideas to string these characters up and some of those checks bounced hard! I mean, I enjoyed the ride, but I found the writing to be pretty flawed overall. Ambitious, but lacking the direction to always bring full impact from those ambitions.
@differentbutsimilar7893
@differentbutsimilar7893 5 месяцев назад
@@Alphabunsquad That last part you said is the thing I don't get. We want our existence to mean something. But I struggle to find the meaning in what any of the characters went through by the end. The reality they are left with is abject tragedy, guaranteed to lead to even more. I see no meaning in what went down. In truth, all of the characters had a role to play in the ever spiraling chain of suffering that would inevitably continue after their deaths. At best, all of those feelings took them in a big circle, leaving a world not unlike the one they started with, arguably worse. I just don't know where the solace is in that. As far as AoT is concerned, those feelings ARE meaningless.

I hear you. The music of Attack on Titan is truly one of a kind. It is both epic and emotional, and it perfectly captures the tone and atmosphere of the series. I can't imagine watching the show without it. Hiroyuki Sawano is a genius composer, and his work on Attack on Titan is some of his best. He has created a soundtrack that is both iconic and unforgettable. I also agree that Isayama is a legend. He has created a story that is both complex and compelling, and he has developed characters that we care deeply about. Even though the ending of the show was divisive, I think it's important to remember that Attack on Titan is a masterpiece. It is a series that will be remembered and talked about for many years to come.

The best scene in the last episode, in my opinion, was Zeke's death. The thing that made this scene iconic is that Levi did not go to Zeke، but Zeke was the one who called for Levi. It was like if Zeke was telling to him: “ Come and kill me, man. You can take your revenge now. ”
@faust3209
@faust3209 6 месяцев назад
I agree. When Armin says 'umi da' he isn't just saying life can also have good things. You see Zeke is very sad, and baseballs make him happy, so Armin is also saying happy is a good thing. Zeke never once thought this in his life so when Zeke said "ooohh wow" that was him actualizing himself as an individual (this is very subtle, most ending haters won't get this except for me and a few intellectuals). Zeke is a monke, and monke are on the ground (not free), trees are above ground (leaf) so they are more free, and birds are above trees (so most free).

Wars are bad and we as a species need to someday win against them as we get better as a whole, but right now wars are probably inevitable, at least for some people on this earth, and seeing the conclusion of a 2000 years war happen with all the loss, sadness cruelty and love while waiting for our war to end was intensely amusing. An easy way to illicit a response and that's it. Absolutely nothing about this ending would be improved by more character deaths, and it would be identically safe, because death on its own is meaningless. It wouldn't have been shocking if more characters died, and the world is so fried who would really care? What made it unsafe is that there was no big secret twist, no genius solution, no positive outcome. I thought this animation was very similar to Evangelion. And it is developing the narrative in exactly the opposite political direction I think this animation justifies fascism. So I don't agree with this animation's message. But I enjoyed watching it anyway🤷‍♂️ After ww2, Japan was limited in military power by the United States and became a lot of economic and social experimental sites. monetary policy, fiscal policy, quantitative easing etc.. So Japan served as a leading indicator for many capitalist Western countries. So, the meaning that the attack titan can see the future symbolizes Japan, which acts as an avant-garde for other countries The fact that they are leading the way does not mean that they can see the future, change or decide. That's why Eren said he was stupid at the end In the course of the experiment, Japan's traditional and family values collapsed, and society became depressed. The gloomy atmosphere of Japanese culture in the 1990s and 2000s arose after the collapse of the bubble economy in the 1980s Evangelion and AOT. Both animations are developing narratives based on Japanese society after the collapse of the bubble economy So I thought this was a significant message from Japan to Western society. And I didn't understand why Westerners like this. But the show was fun 🤷‍♀️ I think the meaning of rumbling is the return of state monopoly capitalism. Or national capitalism something like that. And I don't think Western liberal civil society is prepared for such fascism The expansion of capitalism leads to imperialism. And imperialism calls big wars. Reset and start over. So only innocent young people died in ww1 and ww2 🤷 And AOT's narrative justifies that cycle of capitalism End of Evangelion tried to end it. That is the difference between the two animations.

@@user-wj3du2xx1f Umm... seriously no. For all its depth and the amazing messages, it has to give you're reading too far into it. Like, if Attack on Titan was the freak'n Bible, you'd rightly be called a false preacher, because not even it is meant to convey so much specificity outside of what each individual word means. Unless you've read some interview with the author or are privy to his views or inspirations in any way, the only the only themes we can be sure of are that of conflict in general, war in general, and the wars and conflict that come from prejudice, bigotry, vengfulness, and the how the feelings of deserving revenge can be wrongly be targeted on generalized demographics & even across generations. As well as how good people can do terrible things, and... well okay there was a lot of stuff, but very little of it ever had to do with the economy, wealth, bourgeoisie family values not regarding military service, or anything like that.

I was not an anime fan, I only watched Death Note in the pandemic and I loved it, but I never watched any others. A month ago, one of my friends tells me "If you liked Death Note, you might want to give Attack on Titan a chance", so I did. One month later? I finished all 4 seasons in a matter of weeks, had goosebumps while watching the entire finale and I am now looking to buy the mangas and I am very eager to learn japanese. Truly a life changing experience, if you want. Amazing story, great characters and so many plot twists that will mess with your mind. Its amazing that animations can be so emotional and so full of action and thrill. I am now looking to start a new anime. I'll never forget this story and it's characters. I know, I'm an adult person talking passionately about a Chinese cartoon, but what can I say. I can't help the feelings and the journey of my life for the past 8 years, and the feelings I have for AOT. And I know a lot of people hate AOT ending for obvious reasons; but in my opinion, it's perfect. It matches exactly what was happening within Eren's mind(a bit convoluted, innit), and it's the realest, rawest ending AOT could ever have. It shows exactly what it means to be human.

10:14 the reason why eren says he doesn’t know why mikasa was the one to set Ymir free is because he was dead before it happened. What set Ymir free was the kiss that mikasa gave eren after killing him. More importantly, it was the fact that even though mikasa loved eren, she was able to break free from him and kill him in order to save humanity (something that Ymir was not capable of doing to king fritz for over 2,000 years). After seeing mikasa find the strength to stop the one she loved, Ymir was able to break free from her shackles and finally do what she needed to in order to save the people she cared for aka the eldians.

I started watching in 2017 as a 16 year old and I have to say that every moment and plot twist made me feel intense emotion. Watching Eren "die" in season 1 and Levi "die" in the explosion, seeing Reiner come out of the wall, and every grand reveal was truly something. I theorized and analyzed every situation and was never able to come to the answer that was later revealed. This show made me cry, laugh, ponder, gasp and cheer on the characters that I've loved so deeply over the years. I'm happy that I got to enjoy the journey that Attack on Titan has granted me. Rewatching the show and that final conversation between Armin and Eren is actually perfect to me. In my head canon lol, Eren visited Armin and the rest of the cast many times throughout their lives in the paths having conversations with them and trying to find ways to tell them why his plan was the only path he saw forward. They'd only ever remember it once they were there with him again and finally keep those memories once he was gone. That last conversation with Armin is almost like it shows his mindset throughout his life, on his introspection having lived that life many times over and trying many different ways to see it differently or find peace. But whether he was living it in the paths or through his first life in the real world for the first time, his priorities changed, his views changed, his ideals about himself and the world changed. Every time we see them get older is a new Eren but the same Armin. Every time we see Eren change he becomes more and more jaded, eventually more and more deluded with the rage and ideals he thinks are the only way to save his friends. Giving himself an excuse, making himself his own self righteous hero, all so he can do what he wanted and end it all but never being able to live with himself once he did. And ultimately, once driven mad by his decisions and barely keeping it all together, begging for death not being able to live the life he should've been satisfied with with Mikasa where the island is eventually burned to the ground after he dies by the outside world, he let Ymir take over and do as she pleased because he didn't have the strength to face a future that wasn't in line with his idea of freedom. If someone tries to take my freedom from me, i wont hesitate to take away theirs.

It's not as crazy as it may seem that Ymir loved Fritz. Victims of abuse often develop a type of Stockholm syndrome, and this is especially true for Ymir, who was just a child when her entire life was destroyed. This situation is also a clear parallel to Mikasa and Eren. When Mikasa killed the one she loved, it gave Ymir an epiphany that she could be her own person outside of Fritz.

@@stolid5919 Me too. Before I would partake in AoT's journey, I was conflicted with views regarding anime, since at that time I had the prejudice belief that anime in general were just Japanese-oriented cartoons aimed for pre-mature boys and girls. When I saw several RU-vid videos of anime scenes at that time, they picked my interest to see them though. Aot was the first anime I watched in late adolescensce and early adulthood, followed by Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Code Geass. Edit: Plus the fact that at the time of 2015, I was entering college life. And with a bonus, at that time, they aired the spin-off Attack on Titan: Junior High, a comedy series that took a light-heartead approach of the series, especially at a time where both me and the protagonists focused on academic studies. Looking back then, it felt like a nostalgic journey of early adulthood.

I think people take eren saying that Ymir loved fritz too literally. You have to remember that Eren is not necessarily the most reliable narrator. Why are we taking a self admitted idiot and also a clear psychopath at his interpretation of ymir. She clearly had Stockholm syndrome. She was only "freed" when she saw mikasa kill eren, realizing that the "love" she felt wasn't true. Eren and Ymir were both trapped by false ideals. Ymir and "love" which wasn't love. and Eren and "freedom" which wasn't freedom. I see too many people criticizing this at face value as if theres nothing in the subtext.

Ymir had Stockholm syndrome, probably the most severe that any person could have considering she was conditioned by king fritz since she was a young child, before her brain could even fully develop. And mikasa loved eren since she was little with the added Ackerman loyalty/enslavement to the will of the founding titan on top of that which can almost be considered an artificial Stockholm syndrome. If mikasa had the will to kill eren despite that, then ymir would receive the answer she was waiting over 2000 years to see

@@ArchiduquesaMA Mikasa, out of all people, because she did the right thing by killing eren despite her love for him. Noone said that eren and fritz are the same person. Ymir loved her abuser because abuse was all she knew, she never had agency until eren gave it to her and she used that agency to make the right choice when mikasa showed it to her. That Annie and Mikasa okapi moment being like, the only lighthearted moment this whole episode is CRIMINAL😭 Honestly, one of the many, stupidly trivial things people are still hung up on even after this finale is Annie Leonhart. Idk I think people give her too much of a hard time still. I didn't care about her on my first watch-through of aot, but then I realized her character perfectly embodies a nihilistic perspective that is very thematically relevant to AoT's story. People mainly have an issue with how she doesn't value human life, namely through how menacing she came off in the female titan arc + when she killed the Levi Squad. And to that I say: NO SHIT. Never in her life was she treated as a person; literally abused by her father and treated as a weapon. I'd argue she was worse off than Bert & Reiner in that respect, who at least had loving families. That’s the main reason she seemed more “ruthless” when killing, but she DOES show remorse when she wakes up (why do so many people miss that??) But, I agree that her redemption arc could've been done MUCH better; most of it was implied or done "off screen," which is why the characters "forgiving her" felt wrong to so many people. I had no problem with it because I understood that these characters have gotten to the point where they understand each other. They have ALL, Alliance and Warriors, been forced into dreadful positions of violence. Even Levi wasn't explicitly shown to be spiteful toward her, likely because he (unlike many braindead fans lmao) understands that she was an indoctrinated child who had a mission to complete (although, interestingly, she tried to end the Paradis mission MULTIPLE times. When that didn't work - courtesy of Reiner - she just wanted to get it over with and return back to her father, hence, the female titan arc). I also think Reiner's redemption was emphasized more because his betrayal hit harder for the main group; he actually bonded with them whereas Annie actively (and understandably) tried not to get attached. Anyway, long story short: People bring up the Levi Squad every time, even though it's been years, all while ignoring EVERYTHING else that’s developed her character. However, she did not need to be taken out of the show for 4 whole seasons. It worked, story-wise, but there was so much wasted potential there; and that's one of my biggest AoT criticisms.
