i literally cry every time i watch this episode, this ep is literally one of the best of all seasons, and like you, after this episode i started to like zeke even more and he became one of my favorites, and he is a of the more well writtens of shingeki
In just one episode, they managed to make me completely change my mind about Zeke. Not only does he have the saddest backstory of all warriors, but his plan, even if it's in no way justified from an ethical or moral standpoint, makes total sense for what he's been through...
well compared to other options it would be the most humane again in comparison to the other existing options (such as prolonged war ) (Or Full Scale rumbling )
@@ozwellespencer955 can you really call it humane to commit genocide? Even if they don't outright kill the eldians off this plan ultimately leads to the eldian race dying off. It might be better than the rumbling but war will happen regardless of if the eldians are there or not.
@@Moonwhalerr well yeah but i said "in comparison" normally it isn't humane but when compared to other options it would be the "best" option available or just f*ck humanity and let's crush them underneath the red giant babes :D yes war will happen anyway but what i mean by "prolonged war" is in both physical and emotional terms if let's say a test run of the rumbling happens humanity obviously would be terrified there hatred and fear would grow 10x worse and so it would probably be a war that would last 100+ years between eldians and marleyans (and the outside world ) of course war will always exist but i meant it for paradis island alone in my text
@@Moonwhalerr or in 50 some years the outside world would've grown technology wise so they probably have already developed nukes so it's either 100+ war or getting nuked after 50 years
In the previous episode Zeke underestimated Levi that he wouldn't kill his comrades. But here in this episode Levi also underestimated Zeke because he didn't know how far Zeke was willing to go.
When Grisha was yelling behind the door it was trauma inducing and bone chilling. Hiroshi Tsuchida VA of Grisha should be applauded. After the Owl yet another great character comes on screen, Tom Ksaver whose impact can be felt throughout the story even if he was present for only one episode. What a crazy good writing man.
This is my favorite episode so far, and one of my favorites from the manga. Zeke is a really interesting character, and knowing his past helps to understand his perspective and behavior, even if it is so twisted.
This episode rlly shows how ur thoughts about someone can change after knowing the full perspective. When we heard Zeke say "Where r my glasses? " in the last episode, we didnt think much about that. But knowing that those glasses belonged to someone he considered his father & he doesnt want to lose that makes the scene rlly sad.😥
So fun fact: you can see Tom Ksaver in both Season 3 Episode 19 in the after-credit scene when Grisha is running with Faye, as well as in Season 3 Episode 20 when Zeke betrays his parents :D
Congratulations, Isayama, you did the impossible: make me like the man who killed Erwin, wtf?🤧. This backstory is definitely my favorite and this is one of the best episodes of season 4 easily. And to this day, I'm in anguish not knowing what happened to my boy Levi, please be okay, I can't bear to lose him too😭 P.S: Marko, Congrats on being able to monetize the channel!
Thanks man! Yeah, you are right, it seems unreal that I would end up liking Zeke after he killed Erwin but that's how good this show is. I'm scared for Levi as well, because after all he was in the middle of that explosion, I don't believe that he is dead, there's no way but he is 100% injured badly...
The fact that both Zeke & Reiner used to be the 'weak' ones (I mean based on their performances it was very unlikely they would be chosen) out of all the warriors but later they became Marley's 'Shield ' & 'Spear' is amazing.
@@thomasmuller-15 I agree he was chosen to inherit the armored thanks to Marcel, but Reiner was the worst warrior candidate, and he was only between the candidates for his loyalty.
Fun fact (no spoilers) In the manga chapter of 'Declaration of War' when Willy Tybur says "I wished for the extinction of my people" we cut to a shot of Zeke (which wasn't shown in the anime) and when Willy says "But I don't want to die because I was born into this world" we see Eren react like in the anime. As expected of Isayama 👉
Grisha even agreed that he wasn't a good father and when he was shipped to paradis, he also realised that he did the same with his kid what his father did to him.
My goodness. "Sole Salvation" is easily Top 3 of the series. It was deeply affecting, emotionally moving, and exceptional structure and delivery. Everything about this episode just resonated perfectly. Also, have mercy on Grisha's Voice Actor's throat. That takes mad talent to reach that level of range. That was madness!
Bro it‘s so crazy how long this journey has been for most of us. You are very lucky to be able to watch all in a row. I watched the first season in 2013 when I was 12 years old. I am 20 now 😂 also with Ksaver we have yet another great impact character
Dang ! so your pretty much the same age (or close to the same age ) as reiner in the story :D he's 21 right now but ya know he attacked the walls when he was 12 and you first watched the show when you were 12 now your 20 and reiner is 21 :D
Yeah, I'm lucky as hell also because I will have to wait only a month for final part. Thank you for making my experience best possible with the blu rays Zero!
it's pretty good :) but (Manga spoilers ) : chapter 123 + 130 & 131 are just peak level aot imo & one of my favorite chapters honorable mentions : 116 - 122
Grisha yelling behind the door was so realistic, most of the children are victims of it. To be honest, the voice actors performed much better than the previous seasons. I feel bad for Ksaver who lost his son, wife and found the dead son in Zeke, he also wished if he was never been born. If no one exists, then no one will suffer.
It must be said every time a reactor watches this ep but shoutout to Grisha's VA Hiroshi Tsuchida for a stellar performance. I'm not even his son or in the AoT universe and I still feel like I've disappointed him and earned his disgust.
I never noticed!!! @5:33 Zeke makes a little fist on Grisha's chest when he says you must change the world if you don't like it... It's the dedicate your heart fist. It's Zeke vowing for the cause he takes up. I may be wrong but that feels intentional
As u saw in this episode that Marleyns and the rest are messed up and they doesn't even wanna look at the eldians and negotiating with them is not even an option.
Every (Almost everyone) character on this show had that one episode that rlly showed the audience the full perspective of that character and why they did what they did. 1)Grisha: We were shocked that he killed historia's family like that. But at the end of season 3 we finally learned why. 2) Reiner :We were confused and angry how this guy who is like Eren's big brother figure could do all this.We learned that in S04E03 THIS. This was Zeke's episode. We finally learned why he did all this. When we found out that he betrayed his parents at the end of season 3 literally everyone was pissed at him.Everyone thought he was pure evil. This episode showed that he is not.He is a human. And just like the rest of them he is a victim of war.
AOT has some amazing backstories for sure and you are right, they tease us with some scenes to kinda form a bad picture about the character and later on makes us feel so freaking bad! xD
Even tho Grisha tried admitting to his faults as a father in 3x20 and 3x21, we really had no idea how deep that would go until we see it from Zeke's perspective. Man, that guy screwed up. But to be fair, he did learn his lesson, and corrected his mistakes with Eren. As I read somewhere: Eren was the child Grisha wanted outside of the walls. Zeke was the child Grisha wantes inside of the walls. I really like seeing your emotional reactions to the sad parts of the anime, like this one with Zeke. It completes my own emotions as a viewes. In the start of the episode, the Marleian guy said "you're still pumping out kids?" This foreshadowed the idea that would come to Zeke later in his life. Than, Mr. Ksaver says "if only I hadn't been born into this world". Let's put a pin on that. (And I loved that you said "Eren wouldn't agree with that plan". That's where I was trying to go) And finally Eren says "there's no greater salvation than to not be born in this world". That was complete BS. No way mr. "I was born into this world" thinks that. If you rewatch Primal Desires and a few other episodes, you know Eren doesn't really think that. It really feels he is manipulating Zeke by "agreeing" with the plan. And there as a small bit of foreshadowing (maybe a lot, I'm not sure) in that little "flashback" when Mr. Ksaver was talking about his family. If you want to take a deep look into it, feel free. If not, just let it be and let's all wait another month for the final part to come out. Also, it's just insane how a basically 1 episode character can be soooo goood. At this point, this is all thanks to the insanely great world building done in theses 70+ episodes. Isayama could literaly create a character out of thin air by now and it would make it to someone's top 5. (Yes, the "plague 600 years ago would be the black plague in Europe, in the 1300s, since the show happens around 1930s)
Grisha learned his lesson for sure. I really like that comparison with Eren and Zeke, so freaking good storytelling. I saw through Eren right away, there is no way he is going with that plan man! :D Thanks for watching as always.
@@MarkosAnimeJourney No problem. Just a small reflection on the episode: It's like Erwin said in No Regrets. Once you leave the decision up to someone else, that's the day you die/lose. Zeke did that and lost (in 4x14, leaving it up to Levi wether to kill his comrades or not). Levi did that and lost (in 4x15, leaving it up to Zeke to pull the trigger on the spear).
Hello! from Japan. This is my favorite episode and I was looking forward to your reactions and comments. I'm so glad that you said that Zeke is actually a good person. It's true that Zeke has done cruel things in the past, but when I heard what Zeke said to Eren in Season 3 Episode 18, I couldn't help but dislike him... When I found out that they were brothers, I felt that maybe Zeke grew up in a pitiful situation. because Grisha was on Paradis Island, so I guessed that he grew up without knowing his father's love, and I already felt sympathy for Zeke from that time. This episode is one of the episodes that made me cry. Now it's time for part one to end with the next episode. Can't wait to see your reactions and comments!
It's interesting to see how Grisha changed between when he as living in Libereo vs. living in Shiganshina. Eren with his anger and drive is the son he wanted in Liberio, while Zeke is the son he wanted in Shiganshina. Their plan gives a whole new, deeper meaning to the theme and constant reminder that Eren gives, "because I was born into this world" and what his mother said about special people, "he's special BECAUSE he was born into this world." The story telling in the score for this episode is so good. You can feel the tension and sadness when Zeke sees the father and son playing together on his way home.
This episode hit deep 18:45 that OST in the background.... Having Ksaver's last words being on the topic of Zeke and the "Euthanization" plan 😭 Literally genocide on his own race in a way The series just keep gettings better and better And the scope of how massive Part 2 of the Final season will be, keeps rising.
This episode really surpassed all my expectations as well. One of my favs of Season 4 without a doubt. It really gives us some much needed context and understanding of Zeke's character. I really sympathized with him as a kid. And what was Levi thinking? Seriously. He's usually so clear headed, but I suppose his emotions and hatred for Zeke got the best of him this time. He's human after all. Note: Keep in mind that 'euthanasia' is meant to mean 'sterilization' in this context. I think it was mistranslated. Technically, in a way, it's like a slow-burn euthanasia or genocide. You're simply taking away their power to reproduce so that in a hundred years or so almost none will be left alive. Great reaction as always. Cheers.
Now think back to that moment in the first episode where Eren is telling Grisha about wanting to join the survey corps because if no one carries on their work then all of the previous suffering will have been in vain. We get a moment of just seeing the reaction in Grisha's eyes in that moment, something profound but which we didn't know...
@@MarkosAnimeJourney Grisha never pushed anything on Eren, even though he needed Eren to take his power eventually, and pretty soon at that point since the full 13 years had almost passed. This time he waited and his son eventually came around to this conclusion on his own, and Grisha has to take a moment to let that realization hit him. If you want something really crazy, think about how many times during the series various characters say something along the lines of "I wish I was never born".
zekes backstory is truly heartbreaking. Grisha was a real piece of shit to him he was driven soley by hatred and vengeance and did not have a family out of love. Based on personalities, Zeke was the son that grisha wanted to have in Paradis, and Eren was the son that Grisha wanted to have in Marley.
@@aracuscesar "besides his poor parenting" well that is what's hugely wrong had he used compassion and love and raised zeke without burdening him with becoming a warrior things might've turned out differently and i know he was pressured from the restorationists and the time constraints aswell buuut .... that's what grisha mainly faulted at and i don't hate the guy i have so much sympathy for him the poor guy saw his lil sister's eaten corpse and was keeping it to himself burdening himself and blaming himself for his sisters death that's just what i have to say
@@ozwellespencer955 hey i don't hate grisha at all, of course what he experience was beyond awful, but they way he burdened all on a child was poor parenting
This episode really put the viewer into perspective. Up until this point they made Zeke looks like an asshole who likes to toy with human lives, but in reality he's actually an honest and sincere man and you can see that he almost teared up when Eren called him brother. If anyone still hate Zeke after this, they clearly don't have a human heart. Also they made it looks like that Zeke has always been the mastermind and manipulating Eren, but after seeing this I'm sure that it's actually the other way around. There's no way Eren of all people would agree with that plan. Zeke's believe goes everything against what Eren's mom said, and you know how Eren loves his mom.
Nice comment! I really like this type of storytelling, it's similar with Grisha when they showed us him killing Reiss family and we didn't know why. Later on it was explained and it's similar with Zeke. Great stuff!
Bro, next episode will be the last already, how crazy it is. This episode is trully amazing, Zeke's backstory is amazing and ties so well with Grisha's, that we saw at the end of season 3. Btw, don't know if someone already told tou, but if you go back to Grisha's flashbacks at the end of season 3, at the scene where Zeke betrays Grisha and Dina, you can actually see Ksaver with Zeke and his grandparents
@@swishasweetrold lol he didn't ask about op single layered character but we'll written character which Levi isn't 😂😂 and his fans think he's the best but sorry to say that he's just a bland character
AOT is SUCH an amazing show with their Memory system. Lots of Anime's fail with time travel, Well theres no time travel in Attack on titan but knowing memories can travel back in time, and into the future Its kinda the same subject. The AOT Author being able to use this and do it in such a phenomenal way, 10/10
Your theories and analysis are very good, I am glad that you think that Eren is using Zeke, because doing what Zeke wants would go against what Eren represents and thinks, this episode was incredible and showed the very good character that is Zeke, Eren is an unknown, what we know is that she is above all
I hate Zeke's plan so much but I guess I can't blame him so much for rebelling after having that Eldian nationalism shoved down his throat and being told that he would become a soldier, have his life shortened all in the name of restoring Eldia. He was happy enough to just live out a humble life within the walls of the internment zone. Unlike Eren... Quite ironic though that Grisha was willing to sacrifice his own son for the good of all Eldians, while Zeke is willing to sacrfice all Eldians for the supposed good of the world.
I guess you would love Zeke's plan if you live in Aot world and you are not from paradise island, but because we are just viewers the majority are to attached with paradise characters that's why they don't agree with his plan in my opinion and they prefere killing the world just for some people that they love in the island.
@@MarkosAnimeJourney yeah, Vinland saga is also a great anime till now there's only one season and the second season might come next year. It's got great animation just like aot s1-s3 from the same wit studio
Also Marko, When you are done with the remaining episode, I really want you to take a look at one of the past episodes in season 4, and look what they did to the head of my man Dot Pixis. Mans got done dirtyyyy. Unless you don't want to be traumatized ofcourse :). (Good thing about the blu-ray version that those things are cleaned up, I hope season 4 part 2 will have the same production quality as the blu-ray version of part 1)
@@MarkosAnimeJourney I think it's episode 12, I don't recommend doing a google search for spoiler purposes(even after you've seen the remaining episode.) I'm not sure if it really is ep 12 though
When I watched this episode for the 1st time, the whole episode I was like "poor Zeke he had such a tragic life.." then all my sympathy goes the moment he blown up himself with Levi 😂 tbh I never was able to like him even after this. He indeed had a "noble" goal but you see the issue is that he enjoyed all his terrible acts. Same as Annie. That’s why unlike Reiner and Bertholdt, I was never able to accept those two. It was also shown in the previous episode when Levi was asking him about Ragako and then told him that he’s searching for some guilt in his face, but he didn’t found any. People think that Levi torture him only because he killed Erwin but no, Levi isn’t like that, I bet if he saw some remorse on him he would have more compassion towards him (still will want to kill him obviously but without torturing him). And people comparing Zeke with Annie for Levi are just wrong. So wrong. He was enjoying killing Erwin and the recruits (who were kids at that time) calling it a game, and Levi was hearing him ("you seems enjoying this right, let’s enjoy more" idk anymore if those were his exact words but something like that), he could’ve spared Mike since he wouldn’t be able to do anything to him anyway but he still made 4 titans eating him at once and when Mike started crying and screaming the only thing he said "oh, so you can speak" I think I hate him for what he did to Mike even more than Erwin. If something is sure, is that he is a top tier character, probably the 3rd best written one after Eren and Reiner. Still a SO shitty person to me.
I completely understand your opinion, Zeke did lots of nasty stuff and was always acting all mighty. I also feel like he was enjoying crushing them in Battle of Shiganshina and he did Mike really dirty... It's now portrayed that he was actually ''saving'' them by killing them which is kinda messed up even if he truly feels like that.
@@MarkosAnimeJourney exactly !! That’s why I couldn’t sympathise with him, even if we go by his logic, saving people for sure doesn’t include torturing them. But his backstory still made me really feel bad for him, for a while x)
@@tgdtbfrgtn5073 Yeah, I mean he turned out like that because of his childhood sadly. Grisha fucked up. By spending time with Mr. Xaver and hearing his story he realized that Eldians shouldn't even be born which is totally opposite of Eren, the writing is so good, I always knew Eren wasn't going to accept that plan.
Just a question, will u watch the part 2 trailer once u complete this part? There r not many spoilers in it so i dont think it should impact u but its ur choice
@@MarkosAnimeJourney Haha, my guy! I take it you watched ep 16 by now? How does it feel to be waiting with the rest of us?? Also, I don't know what your plan is for JoJo's, but if you're going to continue the series after a long break, I might recommend rewatching parts 1 and 2, or maybe just your reactions to them. There are memes that carry on throughout the entire series. Like, I wouldn't want you to forget about the legacies of the Zeppeli bloodline and REO Speedwagon. Or the Joestar family secret technique of running away. Or the fact that Dio says wryyyyy. All very important stuff 😂 However, seeing you as a reactor, by this point I know you have an impeccable memory, so maybe these are all things you already remember anyway. It's my type of show for sure, I like how funny it is and full of memes and yet it's very serious at the same time. Always having a good time watching JoJo's!
Until this point in the story I finf Grisha, Reiner and Zeke have the most tragic stories. No one has happy childhood in this show, no we don’t do that here, but man those three took the cake .. maybe Levi can join also 😢
congratulations Marko ahhh Sole salvation Zeke's plan is just depressing You thought Zeke maybe a double agent with marley or he was manipulating Eren but In reality Zeke wanted to protect his only family left from grisha ideology and his plan wasn't something crazy, it was simply let Eldians never bear children anymore and and die man Attack on titan world is just cruel
Fun fact from the manga, when Zeke inherited the beast titan, his titan (monkey titan) surpassed so many other past beast titan's in Marley's eyes, for his known abilities (that's kind of surprising since we never really got to see any other beast titans, but hey who knows, that's Marley's opinion) Then again he was able to beat Reiner (The armored titan) with seemingly no damage
I still don't know. I will continue with JoJo and One Piece and I will have a new anime replacing AOT. People are recommending Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, Steins;Gate, Demon Slayer... I will make a voting poll these days to see. Do you have any suggestions? :)
@@MarkosAnimeJourney if you make a poll, Steins;Gate is the one i'd vote for. I'd personally suggest watching Re:Zero and since Re:Zero reactions also draw in a lot of viewers, i believe it'll also help with the channel's growth
@@MarkosAnimeJourney some more suggestions from me: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (64 episodes) [completed] Code Geass (50 episodes) [completed] Vinland Saga (24 episodes) [ongoing, season 2 coming maybe late 2022] (made by the same Studio that did AoT s1-3) Erased (12 episodes) [completed] The Promised Neverland Season 1 (12 episodes) [there is a Season 2 but they didn't properly adapt the manga, so if you react to it you should just stop after season 1 or read the manga, which is completed, after season 1] Any of these would be awesome :D

It is sad for sure, Zeke became one of the best characters but Levi doesn't know anything about it. He just sees a person who brought a lot of pain to him and his people. Shingeki is all about perspectives and that's why it's so damn good!
