The speech between Erwin and Levi actually goes way differently in the manga. He isn't cold at all. Here is what Erwin said to Levi when Levi tries to kill him and Erwin is holding the blade with his bare hand: “Who was it who killed my subordinates? Killed your friends? Was it me? Or was it you? […] It’s the titans! Where did they come from? Why do they exist? Why do they kill humans? I don’t have the answers. None of us do. Limited by our ignorance, we’ll continue to be devoured by the titans! If we just stay shut behind the walls, we are never going to escape this nightmare. Take a good look around you! So fight for the Survey Corps, Levi! I’m not making a deal with you this time.” Erwin provides Levi with a light to illuminate his eyes and bring him away from the darkness of the underground. The freedom to think, the freedom to inquire. The freedom to make his own judgement. Levi follows Erwin because he wants to find meaning in the loss. He wants to see the same light that Erwin sees at the end of the tunnel. Maybe it's an exit. Maybe it's just a blaze of harsh flames ready to incinerate them. Either way, Levi is going forward. With No Regrets.
