We did the buck sweep thing to a team this year. We run a ton of power and knew they would squeeze hard. Had buck in and hit it fro 8 yards a carry

Was the end unblocked? Usually do not see that in the NFL because ends get paid to pass rush!!!

Here's a question: If you're a team that tends to run the same protection scheme in the passing game without much variation, and it includes a hot read, and the hot route is always the same route by the same receiver, wouldn't it justify complicating the passing game a little in the protection department by having more than one scheme for any given pass route package? By that I mean changing whether the dual read (hot read), if it is required, is on the front side or the back side, and changing who runs the hot route as well as what the hot route itself is? The reason I ask is because I've heard some say that it's over complicating things. My concern is if the defense knows what your blocking assignments are, and they can make a pretty safe bet that they can trigger a hot throw, and they know where the hot throw is going, is that not a situation you would want to take steps to try to avoid, or at the very least make the defensive coordinator have to throw the dice and guess which protection you're in and where the hot throw is going? I understand not every defensive coordinator is of an aggressive, "pressure first" philosophy, but those that are seem to think in terms of how they can put 6 on the board wherever they see something they can exploit. I tend to think along those lines myself, I'm wondering what your thoughts are regarding that type of approach and its implications on the offensive side of the ball.

Eric Johnson this is why I personally like to keep 6 in the protection (unless I go empty) the only way the defense can ensure a hot throw is by sending 7 against my 6 (leaving defeated blocks out of it) I can also check release my back if necessary (although it rarely is)

I've been doing a lot of study on this and found that often when you protect with 6 against a 7 man box, the way the protection deals with the extra defender is by assigning a "double read" to either the RB or to the OL. This means that they'll check the most immediate of the 2 threats first, and if he blitzes, they pick him up, if he drops into coverage they then move to check the 2nd threat and if he blitzes, they pick him up. If the double read is assigned to a RB, often he will check release if both defenders drop in coverage. However, if _both_ defenders blitz, it is then a "hot read" for the QB to throw the built in hot route, because only one of them will be picked up and the other has a free run at the QB, so the ball has to come out quickly. What this means is that the defense can ensure a hot throw simply by blitzing both defenders that are being "double read". This can be achieved for instance by the common zone blitz where the Mike and Sam blitz, and the back side DE drops into a trap zone, looking for a hot throw. This is a 5-man zone pressure (*it doesn't require the defense sending a 7 man pressure*), that if the offense is double reading the MLB and SLB with a 6 man protection scheme, will trigger a hot throw. Here's the zone blitz I'm referencing: brophyfootball.blogspot.com/2009/11/florida-fire-zone-steeler.html

You can only get 5 in the route by releasing everyone. If you worry about picking up every blitz every time the defense will dictate how you play. You need answers for situations so your QB doesn't get killed. If you get the ball out early enough vs blitz, or pick it up they may stop blitzing. There is no one answer

Eric Johnson keep in mind they have to get the blitz off to the double read side, if you mix up which side has the double read it adds a challenge to match it up. Also getting the ball out quick enough vs the soft zone is always key

Absolutely. This is precisely what I've been thinking. You can run the same route package but with different protections. Sometimes double read Mike-Sam, sometimes Mike-Will, so they can't gameplan your protection scheme to trigger a hot throw, then jump the throw (if they know where it's going also).
