Here we examine a fundamental of good technique in sword fighting, the theory of true times. Attacking true times allows one to minimise the possibility of being counter hit by giving an opponent a threat to worry concern themselves with before making a target available.

Yes this is a great interpretation when you want most of your attacks finish with a stab. But would you use it for a strong slash? Also how would attack your opponenťs torso from aside using this system? Thanks for answer.

The principles remain the same - the hand always moves first. As for attacking a deep target like the torso from the side - that's what footwork is for. You circle on the edge of distance, and then close the distance with an attack.

Thank you for uploading this. We have tried it at our group and it has helped us fence better.

"Stop listening to these damn dirty I-talians, and fight like men!" -Sir George Silver- But thanks for breaking down some of what he was saying. I lost a good bit of it in the language barrier. I primarily study European long sword. In fact my latest book just arrived as I was typing this. I'm going to try these drills a bit with long sword.

We have a similar drill in sports fencing where the coach just stares at your feet and only moves back when your feet moves forward. If you are fighting in 'true times', you should already be enroute to hit before he is able to move back far enough. Good stuff!

Thanks for this! We actually ended up discussing this very issue in longsword class over the weekend.

How this interpretation of Silver's True Times deal with these two recomendations: "When you gather & suffer that govern your fight, defend only." "There is but 1 good way to gather upon your enemy, guardant. All other are dangerous & subject to the blows on the head or thrust on the body." If denfending and guardant are the only way to gather uppon your enemy, how one should start a blow before gathering? also: how one force the opponent use false times by keeping distance as Silver recommends in many places? i believe you are aquainted with Oz's interpretation of true times, right? backsword.org/8731497f4-f13-o-1/?s2-ssl=yes

+Rafael Ramos da Costa I'm only vaguely familiar with Oz's interpretation. I trained under Pete Radvan (stoccata.org/index.php/about-us/provosts/20-peter-radvan) who was one of the pioneers of the more orthodox interpretation of Silver you see in my video and tend to be much more familiar with that. Those recommendations reflect that Silver thinks you should only come near your opponent while covered, either by an attack (as we see with true times) or by guardant ward, which closes the most direct lines of attack. He does not believe in provoking a response in your opponent (as we see with my video on provocation ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZrRbVYTfORw.html). On the whole Silver does not seem to like the idea that you get your opponent to do something in order to attack them, and prefers the security of distance and steel.

+Tim Is Green can you show me where silver recomends entering with an attack but the interpretation of true time? (because exactly that is under question here) also can you explain how one would 'force' a false time attack against a true time defense only by keeping distance as Silver advocates many times? because If starting with the hand before the feet is the true time one will always be able to enter in true time no matter how far he is. "because the unskillful fights upon false times, which being too long to answer the true times, the skillful fighting upon the true times, although the unskillful is the first mover, & entered into his action, whether it is blow or thrust, yet the shortness of the true times make at the pleasure of the skillful a just meeting together." this tells the attacker starts his blow before (as the orthodox interpretation) and it still is a false time. if you want a more 'fluid' place to talk feel free to call me in fb facebook.com/rafaelramos.dacosta

+Rafael Ramos da Costa Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. There's actually a video that covers where Silver says this along with a detailed technical breakdown at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DBRHra6llvI.html
