Hi!!! Since good ol' Valentine's Day is coming up, get yourself the BEST gift and get custom haircare for 20% off! cen.yt/functionrachelmaksy6
Thank you so much Function of Beauty for sponsoring this video!
HEEYYOO! This week, I just straight up felt like 'playing with hair'. It's been a while, hahaha. Since my hair is getting longer, I wanted to see if I could work my way through the 1800's, using references for the popular styles of each decade! I am DEFINITELY no hair stylist, and some of these are so messy I can't even look at them (hair dressers please don't smite me), but I had fun! Also I can't uh... recommend these Victorian styles as far as flattery... but they sure are unique, lol.
ANYWHO, enjoy me struggling with 'sometimes adequate' results! (new tagline for my channel?)

@@dingustime I have a massive folder of artwork left over from my art history course, but that won’t be much help bc it’s not separated clearly. But if you want a fun example, search Anne of Cleves portrait by Holbein. The portrait made Henry VIII marry her very quickly, and Anne herself made him want a divorce six months into said marriage. He gave her a castle and properties and sent her away, without the usual drama that surrounded him and women. They stayed friends afterwards, and she outlived all of Henry’s wives 😂. She got the deal of the century, and didn’t even sleep with the guy.

I can't remember which book I read it in, but the author suggested that the problem was that all Henry's previous wives/girlfriends had been acquainted with each other and forewarned to humor him in his fantasy of being irresistible to women as Henry, random dude. So when he approached Anne without disclosing his identity, she turned him down flat and crushed his ego, and he made up the "she's *so* ugly" bit to save face about divorcing her.

From what I have learned, natural hair actually works a LOT better for many historical styles, especially from the 1770s through to the 1910s. And in fact, the famous “hedgehog” style Marie Antoinette so loved was “inspired” by (read: appropriated from) black women with Afros. There’s a lovely Facebook page called Melinated Maidens that has a few posts with historical black women, rocking their amazing hair- some of the pictures I recognised in this video are on some of those posts. I’ve also seen a bunch on Pinterest.

I quote everything I can remember properly. It's very circular, the topics of conversation and the flow throughout history. Don't eat me! I know the vocabulary changes, but people tend to talk about the same types of things, ie: what's new in the world, what did the neighbor do, how am I going to get through the garbage heap that my life seems to be right now, how do I deal with this hard problem with my loved one. It all occured as part of the human condition. Quoting things is a reminder that it's not just oneself that has to handle this situation ever in the entire history of the world. You're not alone with this problem or this thought process. Everything is relatable on some level.

They usually work better on natural black hair than they do on Caucasian hair, to be honest. And let’s not forget that white peoples have been culturally appropriating black hairstyles for centuries at this point- that “hedgehog” hairstyle of the 1780s is “inspired” by the Afros of black people.

@@katherinemorelle7115 Yes! Same with some modern updos too. I once did an updo on natural black hair that I'd done a bunch of times on caucasian hair. On Caucasian hair it often took 45 minutes to accomplish IF the hair had a mind to cooperate. Natural black hair? Five minutes. All that lovely texture helps so much!

I find that even on days when I can’t sew, I still really love watching CosTube sewing content. I do sew most days now- though due to disability I find sitting at a machine extremely painful (though slightly better now I have a machine with hand controls). So I discovered that hand sewing was actually much easier for me. And I can do it in bed- which is good because that’s where I spend most of my time. A big digital high five to you from another wheelchair user 🥰 Also, if you are interested in history bounding (you don’t need to sew to be interested in it), there’s Facebook group for Historybounding Spoonies. If anyone’s interested, here’s a more detailed timeline of the 1800s in England! The regency era formally lasted from 1811-1820, when the Prince Regent ruled after his father, George III was declared unfit. In 1820, when George III died, his son became king as George IV. He was then succeeded by William IV, and then by Victoria who ruled from 1837-1901. In common use though, the Regency era often refers to a wider range, from 1795 or to so the start of The Victorian era in 1837. Technically this includes more than the official regency, but you get the idea. Generally, it’s the Georgian era for the late 1700s, Regency for early 1800s, Victorian for 1830s-1901, and then Edwardian after that. Fun facts!
