I’m a professional and have a few tips for the future: 1. The hair wasn’t saturated enough with the remover, you needed AT LEAST the double amount if not more. Probably still a second application, but only for the darkest places still left in the hair. With henna especially, you want and even starting point as possible. 2. Going from the first point, Henna doesn’t lift. It will only stay the same level of light or go darker. So it’s a good idea to be one level lighter before Color (when talking henna), so you don’t risk getting too dark. 3. Newly lifted hair sucks pigment more easily, and will appear darker. Keep going with application of pigments, and you end up dark again. Which is what happened here. If you want to go to another hair adventure yourself, without a professional, I highly suggest: Give your hair at least a month of rest with lots of treatments. Do another round of colour remover and a second might be necessary. If a third is needed, I would give it a few days rest and treatments. The goal is to get it as even as possible, so only apply the second or third round the needed places. I would recommend a semi permanent dye or a toner, just for the sake of health for your hair. If henna is still desired, you just need to be slightly lighter than the desired result. I would just give a few days between the colour remover and henna with lots of treatments, so the hair sucks the pigments more evenly. No matter how you desire to colour, just remember you need and even result as possible with the colour remover. It’s the foundation for the next step, and the most important part. Wish you good luck! 🥰

💯 all of this! PLEASE use a demi/semipermanent color if you get back to red and decide to go dark again. It’s so much easier to go lighter again.

As someone who has gone from black to henna red and back multiple multiple times… my recommendation if you want to go back to lighter red is: do the color remover again up to 3 times. Make sure you rinse really well. Then do the henna again. IF after this you are still not at the desired lightness… then do a light bleach bath for 15 minutes. Mix a bit of bleach with shampoo for that. It should not be too hard on your hair.

I actually adored your colour after the colour lifter. As someone with dark hair, I would say your hair now is definitely red rather than brown, just a very dark red. I think washes and sun will lift it naturally over the next few weeks - it looks beautiful all the same. But yeah, dark hair is basically a life commitment unless you’re willing to use bleach. My hairdresser kept asking me over and over before I went dark if I was sure 😂

I have blonde hair. In one fell swoop, I had half of it shaved down to about a cm and the other half long, and all of it was dyed black. After it grew out a bit, I had it all trimmed down to the same length, and someone dyed my roots brought red for me. Lol. Then I let it grow out from there. It's long and blonde once more. After dying my hair a darkest blue-black, it took me a 6 hour salon visit and $300 to lighten it to a medium reddish brown. I think they did color lifting without the harsh type of bleaching - hair peeps can say exactly - but my hair survived with very little damage. My profile pic shows my natural color, so I got pretty close. With all the home hair products, time spent, aggravation, and tears, the salon was worth it for me (I could eek that cash out mah butt at the time)! Best luck Rachel!! We're here for ya!

As a hair stylist, I just want to throw out there that it isn't always feasible to go get what you want done in a salon. It's expensive as heck, and while we do a lot of school and continuing ed, it's still totally possible to get what you want at home with some research on products and a baseline of common sense. The only thing I would highly suggest to anyone is to try to have someone around to help make sure things are evenly saturated, but even that can be done solo. I am always more than happy to help out my clients with advice for home stuff, from styling to cutting bangs to color, because the stigma of diy hair needs to stop. Most of my own terrible color jobs and cuts came from professionals.

Whispers in hairstylist: “color doesn’t lift color” 😂 honestly you did a pretty damn good job and were on the right track at first! The problem you really had was you didn’t lift out all the old box color so you were just adding pigment on top of pigment, hence the darkening color. (Which you figured out pretty quick I think 😂) Color remover is a form of lightener, just less strong, so it can lift out the box but not the henna. You should give it another go later! Just remember that unless you can get all the color out, the henna will just look dark. Good luck!!! 👍🏻
@compubijou
@compubijou Год назад
I was yelling at the beginning, "Follow the instructions and wash your hair!" I've been screwing around with my hair for 24 years, color lifter will lift the dirt as well as the color, so if you have squeaky clean hair, it will only lift color and not dirt. Use two boxes for one application since you have long hair, and do it twice for dark colors. I would give it a couple weeks and let your hair relax, do oil treatments every 5-7 days, that will help the hair and help start pulling the henna out. I'll pray to the All-Hallow gods for you... lol

Colour removers have to be used >exactly< as the instruction on the box says, the hair must be fully saturated, and they also have to be rinsed out >forever< (like 10 mins + literally) afterwards with warm water. The way it works is that, depending on the remover, it either temporarily "shrinks" or "pushes out" artificial pigments from the hair. If the pigment is then not washed out of the hair properly it is going to oxidize and become dark (or spotty like in your case) again. The instructions usually fail to mention that, sadly. Usually you'd see the hair turning lighter all over before washing though, so I'd guess that either the 20 mins wasn't enough or the colour remover is just not the best. On a more cheerful note, it it goes wrong again you can always do an orange buzz and become a true pumpkin girl :) Also your current reddish brown also looks very autumny and pretty!

As a professional screwing-up-my-hair-at-homer I've learned the hard way sometimes you're better off just bleaching. I would do the same thing and use tons of different stuff trying to get around bleaching and end up damaging my hair more than if I just bleached it from day 1. If you use a light developer, like 20, it's hard to damage your hair as long as you follow instructions and will save you a lot of time and heartache!

@whossoul
@whossoul Год назад
@@lexmarie3248 That won't happen if you use henna dye that's 100% henna. Cheap, low quality henna dyes contain metallic salts and that is what reacts to the bleach and can cause your hair to melt, not the henna itself. I used to always bleach my roots before adding henna and would always pull the bleach down over the henna to blend it. When multiple applications made my ends darker than I wanted I would bleach my whole head. Never had my hair melt cause I used 100% henna. A strand test is always a good idea, as is knowing what's in your dye, but the idea that henna plus bleach melts you're hair isn't entirely accurate.

I have some tips (I have been to haircoloring/stylist school for a while) -Smaller sections of hair during the coloring/color removing process helps make the results more even toned, use a rattail comp to make the sections and separete them when u go -Use more 2 or 3 box of the hair color remover at a time if you have long hair to coat the whole hair evenly and throughly -Use the color remover on a clean hair -After first color remover is washed and hair dried, you can do the process again and focus the color remover on the ends wher it is darker and leave the roots either for last or completely color remover free, this so the result gets more even, you can do this same process third time on a dry clean hair and focusing on the darkest parts of the hair - After that I would deep condition or use a condition based semi permanent hair dye to get the color you want (like manic panic, arctic fox etc which don´t include developers) these kinds of hair dyes just coats the hair with color and don´t get in the hair follicles so they are safe to use after harsh treatments - Yes the box hair dye as a mistake, and it is because color doesn´t lighten the hair even with a developer, if you want a lighter color u need to remove color, not add to it, this is a common mistake - Mix turmeric powder to your henna mix to get a more orange and lighter result also the lemon is not needed and will dry your hair out -Also last pro tip if you want swicth between ginger and dark brown hair color, I would recommend using conditioner based semi permanent dye (without developer like manic panic, stargazer, arctic foxetc) to get the darker color, again it just coats the hair and doens´t get into the hair follicles so it will easier to remove and get pack to the ginger with color remover Also the video was entertaining and I will watch any and all videos you make, I am here for the vibes lol Hope this helps

Rachel, as a retired hairdresser I would like to caution you about the use of multiple products back to back...you can easily burn your scalp , blisters even, cause major breakage and lose hair . So please go gently, gently ! Wait a week at least before adding more chemicals and use hair moisturizer to sooth your scalp and hair. The lifter has weakened the color bond so if you just wait a few weeks you will see that the color will lighten over time . Continue to use hair conditioner and take pictures of your mistep to remind yourself that you "tried it ,didn't like it"! Push comes to shove a simple hair cut will repair some bits AND hair grows every day.👍 😄Its what keeps hairdressers employed ! 😄

If I were you I'd go through a couple more color removers, like the one you used. It gets rid of the color buildup, without damaging your hair too much. To get the most out of the color remover, wash your hair with a stripping shampoo (or dish soap) and dry it, no conditioner. The more open your hair cuticle is, the easier the remover can get the c out. Then when it's orangey, put the henna over it again. You can do it!!

@lisajennings2194
@lisajennings2194 Год назад
I go from black to white every Summer so I can do fun colors in my hair. I have learned a lot and I will share. The color lifter worked really well but it was patchy. There were dark spots of the black left. I can't remember if they mention it on the box but it works better (like way better) when it is warm. Even air conditioning will make it so that it does not work very well. That's why the top and the hair close to your scalp was red. The ends of your hair were still a bit dark because they needed heat. I wrap my hair in plastic and then put one of those heated caps for deep conditioning on while it processes, about 20 minutes. It gets the shade of red you want with no dark spots nearly every time. If you have some darker spots you just do it again. Also, you need to use more than one box for the length of your hair as well. If I had your length I would buy 3. No henna needed. Good luck!
@jadevt1939
@jadevt1939 Год назад
Her roots are light because she's a natural blonde. Not because the colour remover worked better closer to the scalp. And she did wrap it in plastic and a shower cap when she did all her hair. That said I thoroughly agree she did it incorrectly. Multiple boxes, squeaky clean hair and another round on the patches she missed from sectioning poorly. Would have gone much better. I'm also a fan of colour remover because it's so much gentler than bleach

@lisajennings2194
@lisajennings2194 Год назад
@@sapphirecamui6447 I am so sorry for the confusion. I do not get white with the hair color stripper alone. After I use the color remover I always get the shade of red she likes. Once the black is all out and it is a light red shade I do a bleach bath to get my hair back to yellow. Once it is yellow I tone it to white with a good toner depending on what color I am doing. This year I am going lavender and following up with a color depositing conditioner to go deeper purple once it starts to cool off. I hope that straightened things out for you. I did not mean to be misleading.
@lisajennings2194
@lisajennings2194 Год назад
@Skylan Howerton The products matter a lot. If you use the best products and you do things in stages anybody can get white hair without losing it. It will always be damaged that is just the nature of removing the color from your hair but if you do it in stages, use a bonder and deep condition the hair will be in much better condition.

It will strip out some of the color, and you'll have to do some intense conditioning afterwards, but it never failed to strip the color from my hair. Give your hair some time and several washes before you apply anything else to it. You're beautiful no matter what color your hair is.

I say embrace the autumnal hedge witch vibe I'm getting. It's definitely red: Just darker red. I personally adore that color, but sun and washes will likely lift it lighter. IDK if it would work, but I know when I want to remove some Arctic Fox from my hair, I switch my normal wash cycles to head and shoulders (the dandruff shampoo) because that's essentially a clarifying shampoo. IDK if it would work with the henna but it might help with a gradual lift instead of a chemical shock. Either way, thanks for the content. it's been a rough week for me and me and my daughter adore watching you and find your stuff so inspiring. So thank you. Take care of yourself.

Hairdresser here… Smaller sections are always better for even application. A color brush is nice to work the product into your roots but even hairdressers use their hands to work the product into the ends. The brush also has a pointed tip on the handle you can use to part and section your hair. You can get a bowl and brush for like $5 on amazon. Going lighter from dark is not an easy process. You have to lighten the brown parts ONLY and then apply the final red. If you put lightener on your roots it’s going to give you hot roots. This is a color correction and if you want it more copper red I suggest going to a salon and paying someone to get you back to red and then you can maintain it going forward. Henna adds more complications to this process and getting professional help will be worth it. You also probably need a trim and a deep conditioner after allllll that. Good luck!

"Piling on top of eachother" is exactly where it's at 😂 Some tips for my DIY homies: - if you want to go darker than what you're currently rocking, there's very little risk to mess it up, box dye or henna will cover up lighter shades, no prep needed - if you want to go lighter (dark to blonde) or brighter (dark to red/auburn), you need to remove pigment first; so either you use lifter to remove artificial pigment (may require a few applications if you have dyed your hair a couple of times) or if you have virgin hair you need to bleach it first (volume 20 is enough to lift 2-3 levels without damaging your hair too much). Hope this is helpful to someone somewhere! ✌️ Edit: If you want to dabble in some darker colours, but you know you will eventually want to revert to the previous lighter colour, don't use dye. Instead look for colouring shampoos/hair masks etc, as those will wash out in 8-12 washes and if you don't wash your hair too often you can get some mileage out of them

Just a little fyi/warning Demi and Semi permanent colors don’t always wash out they way they’re intended to. Everyone’s hair is different and color takes years to master.

I'm so sorry. It's so hard to go back to red after dyeing your hair dark. 😫

I saw the title of this & all I could think of was the scene in Anne of Green Gables. Where she tried to dye her hair & it backfired spectacularly. & instead of going raven black it went green. 😖

It is VERY difficult to lift a dark dye from light hair. You just let it grow out.

I remember when you said you were gonna dye ur hair a demipermanent dark and “let it fade out” and I literally laughed out loud. As someone who has gone from dark to red easily a dozen times. I remember thinking there’s no way. But sometimes we gotta learn the hard way 🤷‍♀️

hey rachel! i've been through this process before of trying to go back to red from a dark color. your hair is probably reoxidizing, meaning you didn't get all the dye out the first time you stripped your color from the molecule. i would suggest using the color remover 2 to 3 times and making sure you spend at least 30 minutes in the shower with a clarifying shampoo. i think if you tried it all again, you could get way better results.

Rachel, don’t worry even though it is darker than you would like. That last color is going to fade into something a lot prettier. I always freak out when applying red because it absorbs too much and it’s too dark. After three or four washes it’s perfect . after 10 Washs it’s too light again. Just wash it with a good strong shampoo and each time it will be a little bit closer to perfect red !

seconding this. My hair always seems so dark when I dye it but in a few washes it will get better.

To make it redder, you must lighten it again and then dye or henna again. Henna does not take color out, it adds color in.
