This week I built Han Solo’s DL-44 Blaster!
This was a pretty hasty build and I wasn’t able to dedicate quite as much time to the details as I would have liked, but overall I think it still came out pretty great. This was my second time using pastel chalks as a weathering technique, and I must say, I fall more in love with this method every time I use it. It really is the perfect way to quickly add age and texture to any Star Wars build.
I also briefly experimented with replicating the look of wood grain on the resin printed blaster grips. I didn’t quite have the proper tools for the job like I had seen others use, but I still gave it a shot! Although the end product doesn’t exactly read “wood grain,” the painting technique I used still gives the grips more depth than if I had just slapped some brown spray paint on it. The first layer of failed paint also gives a nice rough texture to what would otherwise be a smooth uninteresting surface.
Lastly I’ll mention that I love the Vallejo Metal Color line (sponsor me lol). Using a handful of slightly similar metal colors instead of just one or two for dry brushing over black really helped add visual interest to the blaster. It doesn’t draw attention to itself, but I feel that the slight variation in tones adds a further bit of realism to the prop.
Thanks for watching!

I think one of my favorite things about your builds is when something goes wrong, we get to see how you scramble and make it ok somehow. The on-the-fly problem solving is super cool to see.

Nice video. It looks really good. I appreciate that there's not heavy metal playing the whole time.

You can also import models into blender and overlay a wood grain texture on to specific parts

Amazing quality! I do agree that the grip reads a bit more leather than wood. I've struggled to achieve good wood grain results. The best solution I found was wood PLA with wood stain. Since you use a wood filler, I'd be curious if it might have a similar result. All said though, great video and amazing gun!

Very cool build process; would really like to see more angles of your full builds after the close-ups. Detail shots are amazing, but I feel like it'd be worth spending a little more time to appreciate the piece in its entirety

So a while back I painted up nerfs lever action gun and found they had given the stock a 3d wood texture with rings and knots etc. I painted that brown and then used a black wash and it looked amazingly close to wood when done. You could maybe scribe a wood texture onto your casts and try it that way.

Good idea! Someone else suggested applying a woodgrain texture in Blender before printing the grips which seems like it could be a big time saver!

@@brungerbuilds yeah I wondered where you were getting the molds from and if it was 3d was going to suggest it. I've added fine texture to models by adding shit loads of polys and then adding a displacement map.

I use this technique for wood grain: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1zdLTkcnvRs.html I've used it on entirely 3D printed rifle stocks, and small grip panels alike with a lot of success. It works even up close, it is very convincing. Just looks like wood. I don't use a coat of white paint, I use tan satin krylon. I do two coats of it, and then use a very thin layer of alchohol ink with a small chip brush. The ink dries almost instantly with this technique, and that keeps the alchohol from eating away at the paint.
