Attempting to remove the rust from the fuel tank on my barn find Kawasaki GPZ900R

In this video I attempt to remove the rust from the inside of the fuel tank of my GPZ900R using various methods, some more successful than others.
This is not a tutorial, its just part of my restoration journey.
Unfortunately, as you will see, my efforts are potentially wasted. Let's not forget that I know very little of the history of this 80s classic except for the fact that it was in a barn for 28 years... but I'm learning more and more as the restoration continues.
Thanks for watching, I will get back to the bike soon, I haven't been well but have been able to create a little bit of content for you anyway.

For the tank, I also bought up the world stock on vinegar and also am still trying to retrieve the nuts an bolts I put in as recommended by many! In the end, I used POR15 3-stage treatment and it worked a treat. Do that before you get the tank sprayed as it can make a mess if you are not careful (and it looks like you are not 😂).

The wee pipes at the back are breather/overflow pipes for the tank, I suspect the water coming out of them was a little spillage around the filler rim. I've cleaned and seal 2 Gpz tanks(750A &900R) both with Rostio kit. Remove and plug the fuel tap and fuel level sender, let ir soak for a day, wash out very well and add the sealer while still wet, drain the excess and job done. As your tank is already sealed and doesnt appear to be leaking I'd be tempted to treat the exterior rust and leave it as is. At some point in the future a tank or donor bike will crop up at reasonable money
@AshRowland
@AshRowland 6 месяцев назад
You're right, I should have left it, unfortunately after 5 days the 20% vinegar has started to soften the liner and now it's gooey and flakey, so another job to do... it's also revealed a pin hole in the side of the tank

I recently did a 1985 tank. Rinsed big chunks out with water and then filled with vinegar and left for 36 hours. Drained the tank and then rinsed. Coated the inside with 2 stroke oil. It's been 4 months now and now signs of rust at all.

Hi mate... look there is only 1 way to clean a tank... Phosphoric acid.! Three quarters fill the tank with warm water. Add phosphoric acid. (5%). Leave all day. swish it about regularly. Rinse with a bucket full of warm water with household bleach in it to neutralize it. Heat gun straight away to dry out. Then swish some petrol/oil mix in it to stop flash rust. JOB DONE! Keep up the enthusiasm.👍👍👍 👍

Hi Ash. I remember recommissioning an 03 vfr that had all to similar problems. As far as the tank goes I used a heap of vinegar with nuts and bolt and bits of chain and gave it a good shake 3 times a day for 4 days, I actually filtered out the vinegar after each day and reused that same stuff, after getting it nice and clean I used a 3 stage liner kit and I have to say, she came up a treat. I had to buy another fuel pump and float level indicator but I got the desired result

Your best bet would be to get some tank seal remover most brands will remove a variety of sealers and resins they will more than likely damage any rubber seals though so a good idea to remove them if you intend to reuse any of the seals.

Hm! A bit of a dilemma. They obviously sealed the tank for a reason, it probably has some pinholes in it somewhere so if you do get the sealer out your going to have to seal it again anyway. To be honest it doesn't look that bad to me so as long as they did a good job with the sealer I personally if it was mine wouldn't worry about it.

De rust the inside of tank with kilrock descaler. Just pour in a couple of bottles seal up the tank leave the tank in various positions to make sure the liquid sits on all parts of the inside of tank. Give that half a day to a day to work. Pour out save the descaler to use again. Rinse with a mixture of bicarb and water to neutralise the descaler. If the tank has no holes your good to go if it has pin holes you can use por 15 as a tank sealer.

I notice from the video that your tank overflow is blocked (11min 26sec) like mine was. I tried to unblock mine with air, then various sharp implements, then regretted it as I punched a hole in the overflow pipe coming out of the rear of the tank (pipe routed internal to the tank). That creates a nice bypass route so the tank then fails to hold any fluid from then om ......So beware and don't poke around. I eventually blanked mine off and sealed it with JB Weld and make sure I fill it carefully at the petrol station.

I've had various tanks on my Ninjas, some with two pipes at the rear & some USA imports which had one. I never knew why but I believe I found out on one of many trips to Paul Ricard, when I experienced fuel starvation with half a tank of fuel remaining. Everything was loaded as normal & I found that the tank bag was causing an air lock therefore preventing fuel flow to the carbs. , so until anyone can correct me as to an alternative, I conclude that one pipe was for fuel overflow & the other provided a means of breathing when the filler cap was covered.
@AshRowland
@AshRowland 6 месяцев назад
I think one was definitely for breathing so that a vacuum couldn't be created inside the tank which would stop the fuel from coming out, the other was for overflow/rain water to come out from between the cap and tank. I might be wrong though lol

You have a sample of the sealant. Why didn't you try some paint stripper on it? Yes it's horrible, messy, smelly, yucky but just say to yourself "700 pounds or bite the bullett." So far you've wasted a lot of money with zero result. A mistake that could easily have been avoided by watching vids from other RU-vid creators. I did the same as you, went and looked for what a tank would cost on ebay - WOW I thought old Honda parts were expensive, not like its a 60's or 70's bike but I suppose they are getting to that classic age now, most of my bike are 40 years plus now so maybe parts will start to get silly prices@@AshRowland

Stop messing about Ash electrolytes is the answer. Looks like you need acid if there’s a way I can contact you I’ll stop waisting a lot of time.
