Me: This channel is so great! It inspires me to write, has great production value, and I love Kate's personality! What could possibly make it better? Kate: *Moves in with a corgi*
The most I've drafted in a day before is over 16,000 words, though that was nonfiction and I had a VERY detailed outline. In fiction, I think I had a couple of 4k days last Nanowrimo. And Camp is not on track - I'm over 10,000 words behind now. 😅
Honestly at the moment I’d be happy with just 500 words a day. My motivation has just gone these past few weeks which means I’m way behind my goal for Camp.
This is why I don't have a TOTAL goal, the dread of falling behind is so paralyzing sometimes. I set myself a challenge of 5k a day 5 days a week for camp and even though I have only ever gotten there ONCE (on yesterdays 10k Sunday) is still ups my word count enormously. I've been managing 2-3k which is double what I used to get and through that I'm learning what's a manageable expectation over the long run.
Carrow Brown and I used to do 10K Tuesdays/10K Taco Tuesdays a while back, and we've talked about doing them in the future. Most of the time, I don't hit 10K, but the fun comes in trying to hit it as well as the camaraderie of streaming with friends. This time, I tried just drafting on one project, but usually I am working on multiple things at once. Even though you didn't hit 10K, you got a lot of work done, eureka-ed through a plot point that will come in handy in the future for the next book, and gave yourself some self-care. I call that a win overall.
Look at you being all responsible with your water! :) Glad you liked the streams. The camaraderie really helps to keep us focused, even if you only do part or the relay or if you have a smaller or a different goal... Also - DRINK WATER! (and pusheen is adorable and now I want donuts)
honestly, i’m a different kind of writer. i finally have found that nano doesn’t really work for me, i just write as much as i want everyday with a minimum decided that morning. works for me, maybe not you, but i write more on non-nanowrimo months than nanowrimo months. i guess it’s just the pressure? what i’m trying to say is, all of us are different, so don’t be ashamed of your process. edit: also, kate, i’m curious, what is your typing wpm?
I agree! I dislike forcing myself to do something that I'm not inspired for, it just makes the project less fun. Although good for others doing nano, as it does give you a push to go finish drafting, outlining, editing, etc.
I've done 10k a day exactly one time in my life. It was a saturday and I wrote half a novella (11.5k / 19.1k). I've had a writing hangover the next few days, so I doubt I will try that again for quite some time. I don't really fast draft, which means I usually need a lot of time for my first draft anyway, so 10k a day is definitely an interesting experiment, but not something I'd make a habit out of.
Although you didn't reach the 10K, the amount you did manage was great already, so congrats! And if you had fun on the way then that is definitely a win!
If your looking for a more forgiving challenge, I recommend a Word crawl. A word crawl is a type of word sprint that collects a number of word wars, prompts, and sprints into one challenge. I tried my first one the other day! I don't know if it's really your style but you never know. Great video! Once again you're motivating me to write.
This is my first month of doing Nano ever! I’m behind, but for the first time ever I’ve written every single day because I want to enter an update each night before bed. Now I’m going to build up to a 10k day! Woo.
I'll usually join in on Keylin's 10k days, but my goal is much, much lower than that... the most I've ever done in a day was ~4800 in 12 hours. My goal is still 20k for the whole month, but I'm pretty far behind, but I'm outlining my second draft before getting into the actual drafting process. It's taking me a bit longer to get into the story, but I've had a few "ah ha" moments the past few days, and I'm really excited about that!
I needed this video today honestly your vids are the sunshine in my life they make me feel so happy and make me excited about getting creative and writing
I really want to read your series now! I love seeing your progress on it. I think you're very brave (as my Grandmother would say) to write a series for the first time. I have yet to do that myself. Although, the book I'm writing for camp could be the first!
I have actually gotten ahead in my Camp Nano project because I have gotten into a habit. Just listening to slowed songs and writing. I write on Google docs and I change the color of the words I have done in the last word dump to that blue color. The special blue. Really helps me see just how much I have accomplished
I "sort of" participated in the 10k yesterday. I'm editing so it was more for to help me focus during the writing sprints than the word count. I have done 10K in a day before but it was when I first started the book. When I start, I'll write the same scene in different POVs and then choose the one that fits so out of the 10k, only 5 might end up in the book. I enjoy theses challenges. (last Sunday was a blast) I have to admit, when I first started seeing them I thought it was weird to sit and "watch" someone write. Then I clued it that I need to be writing too and now I'm obsessed lol
Writing is sort of like running. If someone who could run 5 kilometers tried to immediately triple what they could normally run, you'd probably warn them that it was a bad idea. That they should probably ramp up more slowly than that. And if they tried anyway and couldn't get past 9 kilometers before they got too exhausted to keep going, you'd tell them that it's okay because they pushed way past what they'd done before. Brains are similar. You can't expect to suddenly expand over what you could do before. Instead, it's easier to push a bit at a time and get used to the steps in between, although that's way less satisfying than rapid gains. Like I seem to be able to do around 4,000 words in a day if I'm dedicated to it. And I can push to 5,000 if I'm super motivated... but I fall shy of 6,000. I just don't have that sort of endurance. And that's okay. Small bits of progress accumulate. Honestly, I say call it a win for pushing yourself so far, even if you were shy of your stated goal.
I did not hit 10k on either of the days that I tried to do them. I tried Keylin Rivers one on Saturday but could only get 6,700ish words on my project and then my brain said, done braining now, go, btw...fire hot, tree pretty, water wet... I then attempted to do the Sunday 10k and I just couldn't get words to flow, so I read most of the day. This is my third attempt with my first being the best and closest I ever got at a little over 8k. So, not sure I will ever make it, but eh, I got words, so yay! You got words, you had a light bulb moment, so yay!
Your mug is so cute! My camp is a struggle, I have about three thousand words away from my very small goal of 8K and have no idea where else to go with my project
also: you're basically rocky in the first movie; you made a REALLY valiant effort of it, but you (and everyone around you probably) knew this was a tall tall order. but you went for it anyway. which is the important part. AND YOU GOT LIKE 6700 WORDS THAT IS NOTHING TO SNIFFLE AT
I have attempted a couple of 10k days, but the best I've ever done is 5k and I was completely burned out for like two days after. I think right now, my limit is 1 - 2k a day. That being said, I think it is really important on 10k days to take breaks. Get up, stretch, eat, etc. Writing is not worth ruining your health. I am currently waiting for an alpha reader to read my first draft (it's a family member so it isn't a big deal. Just want their opinion on some stuff). I'm hoping they will finish it by August so I can start the second draft. I already know a lot of stuff I'll have to change.
Ah! You’ve inspired me so much lately. I’ve recently gotten started writing a new story! Just wanted to say thanks for inspiring me to get started on it ☺️🤗 I’m hoping to complete a large portion of it during Nanowrimo! I’m excited!
AWW YAY! That makes me so happy! :) Good luck on your new story!! (And I can't wait for NaNo, which is crazy to say during Camp. Maybe I just can't wait for November and it not to be summer in Texas anymore bahaha.)
You should definitely include words from freelance and emails! LOL What a great Idea! I message a friend every morning and today out of curiosity I counted the words. My half was 800 words!!!! LOL Re: writing all five books before publishing the first…great idea. My first vampire book was supposed to be a stand-alone, so I published it. Then I fell in love with my vampires and didn’t have time in one book to even touch on their culture etc., so now I’m writing a sequel. LOL Thanks for a fun video. :) My 10K day resulted in 1,376 words. *laughing*
After watching this I don't actually feel so bad with only managing 1k for this Camp... Cuz, brain ain't wantin to work for me this month... Or anytime recently honestly. Lol! Happy for you on making it as far as you did whether you think so or not!! 😁
Oof, term papers -_- I always stress so much I almost make myself sick. Or I try to start on the paper immediately even if I haven't learned everything I need for it yet :P
awh! when you were talking about Analisa's character growth i got the chills in the best way. i could see the fondness and the emotions from you and its wonderful. I truly cannot wait to read your books one day. it'll be wonderful!
I LOVE KaShay, and really want to participate in one of the 10K Sundays. With a little one, time is tricky, but I'm slowly working out how I will be able to pull it off.
Yay!!! 10k (in 1 day) is my dream lol ... and that will never happen lol ... happy end; ... better would be 10,000 words in 1 day in printing/final draft quality.... lol ; the only thing which worked for me , when I was writing my phd thesis, was unplugging the Internet connection in the evening .... wake up the next day and write without the Internet whole morning every day .... I got A lol (I'm not a native speaker by the way, so sorry for my English lol; and it wasn't written in English but Czech lol)
Ugh I LOVE crazy ex girlfriend. It’s probably the best contemporary show that deals with mental health and it’s so funny. I wish more people got into when it aired but even I was apprehensive to watch it because of the title and I thought it was going to be super dramatic. And at times, it is (well Rebecca is) but it’s awesome. If you like musicals and comedy, you’ll like this show. But hey any words are better than no words!!
I just did a 10K day for the first time!!! :D Working on the vlog for it now, but I think the only reason I got through it because I was feeling super motivated that day and was working on a new draft I felt very comfortable with. It was a weird challenge. :D
I think the most I've written is around 2,000 words, which makes me insanely proud sometimes. I tend to compare myself to others so its difficult sometimes, but I'm trying to push through it! Also, your videos are awesome, keep up the great work!
It was so much fun!! I got 5k words (I almost wrote just 5k, but like 5k is a lot-). I tapped out of writing by about 5pm, but I kept the streams on for the most part afterwards and kept talking to everyone. The streams were definitely a lot of fun and made the day pass so quickly!
I tried to do the 10k yesterday. But I failed more than you did. But Sundays are busy around here. I'm at about 9k words and I'm behind on my camp project. I've stopped updating the website. I just don't like it very much. But I do plan on going live on youtube for at least an hour today depending on how well the kiddos cooperate lol
I think the most I've done was 4K. Never done NANO. SO CLOSE TO THE END of my project Teenage Heroes after 6 MONTHS (hopefully a few more chapters!!)!!!
I have attempted 10k days 3 times, but Sunday's was the first I was ever successful at. I attended every stream and worked for 14 hours, but I did it! I wrote a short story, which was one of my Camp Nano goals. I think what worked for me was that I had that short story planned from start to end, so once I started everything just flowed out of me. There were a few surprises, but they turned out to be better than what I'd planned originally. The stars just aligned for me. Also, the streams really helped. I wouldn't have succeeded if the community hadn't been so supportive.
I used to have 5K days (I was toast for the following day, though). Now, I can't do that anymore... and I'm OK with that. I guess I've grown comfortable as a writer and I just relaxed. The words are there. They'll be written. I don't need to kill myself for them. I think you're going through something similar (unless I'm completely wrong... if I am, you can say it!)!
I'm a marathon writer so 10k days are fairly common for me, however - I tore a bunch of tendons in my wrist right after camp started. (Of course.) Needless to say - I don't think I'll be reaching my 50K goal lol But hey, it means I can do what you're doing and try and plot some stuff out. (Which as you know - not the easiest for a hardcore pantser. xD) The best laid plans...
have you tried talk to text software? There's some free stuff available online, but if you'r a pantser it might help you talk through some things. It doesn't do much for me but I have friends who swear by it.
Catching up on your videos. I'd love to try a 10k word day. Because I need that extra push. Maybe I'd be able to get past a first draft. Sounds exciting.
I wasn't anywhere close to 10k days. 4k. Womp, womp. But I'm ok with that. I enjoy the experience of doing this writing day with a fun group and cheering people on. I guess for me, I've made it more about the journey. And you should definitely be proud!
My goal of 10k for the month has allowed me days where I have no motivation to write, because I easily catch up on days I want to write. I'm not worried about falling behind during my middle of the month slump, haha.
Right now I'm struggling with outlining my book. Once I finish it, I will definitely try something like this! Right now my personal record is 7k words (on one project! I don't even remember how I did this haha), so I guess I will aim for 8k.
honestly 10k is such an absurd goal, but the absurdity keeps us going and most of us have private goals anyway. I hit my personal camp goal of 5k in one day on the relay day and it was a huge boost for me
The most I've ever drafted in a day was probably 10k! I have no advice how to, just focus hard but don't force yourself. Camp is going HORRIBLY for me; I planned two books for a total of 100,000 and I'm barely through one tenth of that goal. My current WIPs are myriad but my two most-focused aren't very far, yet are extremely far at the same time. I'm such a contradiction.
Just starting camp nano!! I know there's less than 2 weeks left but I'm jumping in now instead of holding off until November! I'm going for 10k in the 12 days left of camp. I know it's not a lot, but I haven't written in months and am ready to jump back in!
I won #CampNaNoWriMo just after midnight this morning! I didn't reach 10k yesterday, but I had reached my goal. Any words is great, in my book, so even if you didn't reach 10k, that's fine! I've participated in multiple Keylin Rivers' 10k and Sarah Sutton's yesterday, but I've never REACHED 10k (despite sticking with the livestreams all the way through-well, I cut out of Sarah's with 3 hours left to go because it was already 1am).
Hi! I don't think I could write 10k words in a single day. I'm lucky to reach 500 words on a good day. I applaud the progress you've made in this video. I think figuring out the story - at the outline stage - is more important than the word count.
Most I've ever done in a day is 4,000 words. 10k days are crazy and incredible but I'm not sure it's in the cards for me (yet). But I love Keylin Rivers' 10k day livestreams!
I could never do 10k in a day, my max has been around 5000 in one day and that was exhausting! But I applaud you for trying!! (Maybe I will try a new best on the 31st? ;) )
I have never done a 10k day - although I am keen to try, I keep missing them or coming in late. The most I have managed is over a bit over 3k in a day. Im working on expanding my writing days and goals - your videos are great inspiration for it!
I only hit 6219 words on Sunday, but it was the first time I'd done one of these sprinting-type challenges where I felt the writing was of a decent quality. They weren't words for the sake of words and future editing me will be endlessly thankful. I might try again next month!
I adore and love KaShay. Her drive and supportive ways are so wonderful. Didn't do so well during this 10k, but I'll get it next time! Edit: just realized I could see my face in one of the streams. I might have snorted into my coffee...
I love this video! I'm planning on doing a 10k day in August :D I actually read somewhere that John Boyne wrote the first draft of The boy in the striped pyjamas in three days, one day I'd like to try that (I'm not asking you to try this, haha) with a Young Adult book. I love they way you're doing this series, zero draft them all and then the other drafts, I guess it helps a lot with foreshadowing etc.
hi weird request (i may have said this before) but can we get a compilation of ALL the clips in which you are shown typing? specifically with the sounds included from each?
I've added 15000 words to my WIP so far this camp. (My goal is 30000 since I already had 20000 from June.) So I'm 35000 words into my story but less than halfway through the outline. Which is insane because I underwrite. **yay**
Oh my lord - I remember attempting to write 10K in one day. My brain - as you would say - was goo at the end of it. I managed to reach my goal and I took the LONGEST nap I have ever taken in years! Also, I submitted the story I consider to be my best (and favorite!) to a second contest (both allow simultaneous submissions), and both should get back to me by September. And with one of them, even if your story isn't chosen for first place, it could still be considered for publication, so keep your fingers crossed extra tight for either one! I've never won a contest before, so I'm really, really hopeful! This story, like I wrote before, is hands down my absolute favorite piece I have ever written! It's 6,001 words and deals with first crushes and pining! There are so many lines in it that I love, and the first two sentences are probably my favorite opening lines that I have ever come up with! I can't share them, unfortunately, or the story won't be able to be published (I think...I'm not sure if RU-vid counts. I've heard places like Facebook and blogs do, but I'm unsure about YT. But, just to be on the safe side, I'll refrain from sharing anything from it on here). So just keep your fingers crossed for this one. I swear...if it ends up actually winning one of these contests, I don't know what I'd do! Cry, probably LOL. I've been trying so hard to get published (since January 2017, when I was 20, almost 21! And I'm 24 now!), to no avail, and I've been seeing my writing evolve and improve over the years, and I can't help but feel really proud about that. I submitted one of my flash fiction pieces to two lit mags on June 30th, and I should hear back from one of them before the 30th of this month (I think). And oh my goodness! I JUST heard back from my critique partner about one of my stories. He wrote in his e-mail that he enjoyed it. He said it was pretty dark and depressing, but it was up his alley and he liked it, and said it was relatable, and that I did a good job! :D Well, I'm going to look over his edits and suggestions and implement them into my story, then get it submitted! Hope you're doing well, Kate! It's such a delight to see a video of yours pop up in my notifications! :)
@@eliastta437 Sorry I'm just now responding to this - I was at work! Thank you so much! :) I'm really hoping for the second one, even though the cash prize is lower than the first. But, honestly, it'd be awesome to win either one! It'd be so exciting and awesome to win a contest for the first time! But, yeah, I'll definitely let you know what the outcome is! :)
I really came to find out what donuts you got. It was in the back of my mind during the 10k day on monday lol I started wishing the shops around me were open
Hey Kate! For your "I Write Like" series, I thought it may be interesting to try one of my favorite authors, Sarah J. Maas! I'm not sure if you've read her books before (Throne of Glass, Cresent City, Court of Thornes and Roses), but she is crazy popular in the YA Fantasy world and seems to have an interesting way of writing! I found this article (and there's probably more info out there), in case it might be a video you were interested in doing: www.swoonreads.com/blog/guest-author-sarah-j-maas/ Thank you so much for your wonderful videos, they help me not only with writing, but with just staying calm, positive, & productive throughout the day!!
I'm editing a previous NaNo draft for this Camp, so my personal word count goal for the month is WAY lower. But I haven't participated in a 10k day yet. I'll have to see if anyone's organizing one this weekend
3k is a milestone for me if I can even get it most days so I couldn't even imagine hitting 10k in a day but this was awesome! I'm doing Camp for the first time and my goal is 35k to finish my first draft of 85k. I'm at 21k right now so hoping to hit my goal soon!
Oh no. I can write between 800-2500 words per day depending on the chapter and how much energy I have. Forcing myself to write 10K in a day sounds like hell!
I did a 10K day this past November; I had a write-in in the morning and another one in the afternoon and then I got home and decided that if I just wrote less than two thousand words more I'd hit 10K, so I did. This weekend I had family stuff on Saturday, so a lot of the household stuff that I would have done then got shoved to Sunday, but I still managed to get 6,526 words, and I'm within a couple of a thousand words of finishing the book, so I'm happy I tried.
omg Kate this has nothing to do with this video but i had a dream the other day and you were in it!! It was the zombie apocalypse and I had just had to kill my bestfriend and then run to a random car for help, and it was you! I climbed in and you were upset with me because you were trying to go meet your husband (this happened the night after I watched your video where you revealed you were dating) and I fake cried about how much I had looked up to you so that you would take me with you to this store thing, and then I woke up hahaha.
Bahahahahaahahah. This is the best thing ever (minus your poor, dead, dream best friend). But I'm here for any and all zombie apocalypse related dreams! Totally driving the getaway car.
I'm actually super proud of myself: I'm at almost 32.000 words and my goal this month was 60.000, so I'm doing great! (I'm kind of creating a Frankenstein's monster out of the former first draft which just didn't work but had a few great scenes I'm keeping and mainly new first draft words which def makes it easier.) I'm working corporate and even though I really like my job and don't feel particularly exhausted afterwards there's no way in hell I'm gonna try something extreme anytime soon. I'm going at a steady 3.000 words a day at the moment and that's very much fine by me :D
ive been sitting in my room just writing and this is the first day writing my first ever story. So sense ive sat in my room i now have 20k words! I am so happy with myself. Btw im a kid so for me to write that much is so godd.
I guess it's just me but like 3000 words is my minium goal per day, and I do more too if I feel like it. I'm a hybrid so like I'm not a plotter or a panser but I have key points in my book series of like every book and it makes it easier to write. And I imagine every scene of my books in my head so maybe that will help you to achieve your 10k word goal next time. 😊 I have no idea, just a suggestion. I wrote 8000 words yesterday so that's just my experience.
I hit 40k on my novel for NaNo yesterday and I think I’m going to have to increase my daily word count from 2,500 a day to 3,000-5,000 a day to finish the book by the end of the month. It I should not my NaNo goal of 75k out of the park.
Things seemed to go downhill with the trip to the store and the donuts. The moral of the story is to stay in and go shopping the day before and bribe yourself with donuts the next day but only if you do it. IMO, I wouldn't be upset with getting "only" 6600. I am a pantser so I can't write a lot in one day. Things have to marinade. The most I've ever written is about 5500 maybe, not sure, I don't really care enough to keep track of stuff like that. But I try to write every day when I'm drafting, even weekends. I like to get a draft done in about 6 weeks at most and concentrate on that one project so it gets all my mental energy. I'm more the tortoise than the hare.
I was participating in an online writing day where I ended up "accidently" writing 10,000 words. Whoops xD I achieved this by writing in 500 word intervals and rewarding myself with a star sticker every 500 words ^^ But in generel how much I'm able to write in a day depends on how far into the story I am. I always outline, so it's not that I suffer from writer's block, but when I start a story the words usually come slower as I have to find my character's voice whereas when I'm deep into the latter half of the book, I can dish out like 5-7k a day no problem.
