*A couple notes on this video!* 1) I somehow lost all the footage for the 2nd "control" sprint. I don't know what happened! :( But I still used the stat, so you'll see it at the end! 2) Halfway through the edit, I realized I should have treated this either MORE like a vlog or MORE like a sit-down video with sprints and explanation. So the result is like a weird amalgamation of the two. It's not my favorite BUT the content and what I learned was really awesome, so I knew I needed to post it anyways! Just an FYI if you're like "this is somehow more all over the place than usual."

I like to "hack" my brain via multiple senses when I write to train myself to immediately get into the writing mindset without needing an unknown amount of time to get "into the zone". First, I have a lovely aromatherapy lotion from Bath & Body Works that I use on my hands right as I'm sitting down to activate the region of my brain that processes scent. Then, I have my Amazon Echo play a playlist I've curated of various TV/Movie scores (no lyrics) that I like to activate the auditory sector of my brain. I've done this enough times that as soon as I hear the first song on my playlist (Skyrockets in Flight from Man in the High Castle), I can feel that "I'm ready to write" feeling washing over me and I can jump right into it. "Hacking the brain"... "Calling the muses"... whatever I call it on any given day, it really works for me.

@Kate Cavanaugh When I do dictation with speech to text, I use a recorder to catch it, rather than the speech to text on the keyboard personally. It takes a while to get to used to for higher speeds - I can average about 20+ pages in 40 minutes this way just journaling. My set up is a digital voice recorder with Dragon NaturallySpeaking (which they discontinued Mac support, so I'm on the Windows version). While I like to type on the computer normally (60 to 72 wpm), my repetitive motion injuries have made this less of an option.

I find that I have three ways that I write depending on my mood/where I’m at. 1.typing. I type when I’m not really struggling with the plot or scene. Also when I have a good amount of time to get all of my words down. 2. Hand writing. I hand write when I have to listen to my teacher in class, I need to fix some problems in the plot, or when the number of words doesn’t really matter. 3. Voice typing. I voice type when I’m really excited for a scene, i have everything planned out, or when I have little to no time. Because I can voice type up to 1,000 words in 30 mins. I talk very fast y’all and my computer had adjusted to that, so I rarely have to fix mistakes. (Unless it’s names) 😊

When I was in school I hand-wrote all of my stories, but now I prefer typing them on my laptop. It's just a lot easier for me since I like to go back and fill in gaps which just looks too messy if I hand-wrote that.

I feel like your usual/control writing has much less distraction than all the others do. And you're right- sometimes, it may not even be the location but your general motivation/feelings during that particular sprint. I'm planning a set of experiments to test whether or not font style or colour can increase my word count or not during sprints- need to get motivated enough to do it though. Also, thank you for mentioning me on your live stream the other day! It was such an unexpected surprise.

It's funny how, even though there's a bit of variation, usually how much you can write in any given time is how much you can write. Like, I write about 500 words an hour and it doesn't seem to matter where I am, it's consistently 500 words an hour give or take 100 words. I'd love to write as quickly as you and some other people can, but I'm very much a "slow and steady" kind of person. (Also, I'm impressed you can write hunched over like that. If I'm not sitting somewhere with back support for more than 15 minutes at a time I PAY FOR IT)

Hi, Kate. I love that today we have so many options in writing and expressing creativity. I am Romanian, not a native English speaker, and yet by testing multiple Voice to text applications I found Speechnotes which is fantastic and gets me, in my best days, over 1800 words in half an hour. I would love if you tried different Voice to text, online and offline ones. PS. Kindlepreneur has a super useful dictation article paid and free. Love otter app. Pps. How about a vid where u test out different voice to text apps mobile or PC? Ppps. Love ur vids!

For an essay I did, I did voice-to-text. Personally, I'm a quick writer and a slow typer. I decided to do voice to text because: 1 The teacher wanted us to type the essay and knowing me I would fall behind. 2 The thoughts that I had in my head came to me very naturally and the only thing I had to worry about was the errors with some of the words.

You might try replacing the names of your characters with common names (like John or Sarah) when you do voice to text. Then you can change the names back when you edit.

This is interesting. With me, I can't write consistently on my phone because I am a Norwegian writing in English and my autocorrect is Norwegian and I would spend ages battling autocorrect to let me type down the words. I haven't tried voice-to-text and to be honest I don't think I will try it out now... because... people might hear me. My family will think of me as a a lot more weirder writing person than before. I do handwriting when I feel the need to step out of the story and then focus on this one bit. I use it during those times which I feel the most overwhelmed about all the words in my stories. Sometimes writing on a blank page helps me feel less intimidated. I also do 1 hour sprints when I know that if I don't do it I probably won't do writing that day.

Excellent video, Kate. My favourite method of writing a story by far is by hand. This helps me to slow down, avoid distractions, think over every word, develop a flow, and relax. However, I did realise that you use a standing desk, in addition to sitting down. That is something that I wish to incorporate more, to avoid the typical cramps and bad posture that I gain from sitting down (particularly in a comfortable swivel chair). I can't stand using Speech-to-Text, as the machine errors frustrate me and stop my flow. If I were outside, I would prefer to write by hand.

I was in that Livestream where you had to contend with all of the bots - that was so odd! Honestly if I could write my entire novel by hand I would, if only because it's easier for me to turn off my internal editor while I'm handwriting (and then I can laugh at my errors). For the most part, I do draft in MS Word even though I do have plans to eventually purchase Scrivener. I will say that brainstorming by hand works best for me, as well as outlining. This way, I can keep my notes by me if I need to refer to them without switching back and forth between multiple docs on the computer. This was such a fun experiment, I'm glad you had enjoyed it!

Hey Kate!!! You should try the dictation style of writing, it's what I do sometimes and helps me a LOT when I'm stuck with the story- I make a voice memo on my phone while I talk, kinda like the voice to text only it's easier to keep a flow going, or when driving (that's mostly when I do it!) Only downside of course is you gotta go back and listen to it all and type it out xD

@avy_kay 4 года назад
That's so cool. I thought there would be a bigger difference in the word-count between mediums. You could totally do more video's like this, by focusing on different aspects. For example, you editing process (would probably have to measure the progress in something other than words though). I usually zero-draft on the computer, but I think that mixed-medium editing is the best for me. I summarize each paragraph on paper, and and make notes for possibly changes. It helps get a "big picture" view that way, and not get sucked into the line-by-line editing too early.

I love writing outside in the summer because we have so few beautiful days here (but I'm also most likely to be distracted because nature...), and I have yet to actually attempt voice to text... I don't really think coherently enough for it to work I think... I think the most unusual for me, was when I used to commute to work in Japan, and my bff and I were on opposite schedules, and we'd discuss my book while was on the train and I'd plot out the scene in my notes. (also, I had so much fun cohosting the livestream! 10/10, would recommend everyone try it)

I don't know that I have 7 different ways I could write, but I would probably pick: handwriting, at my desk, in "bed", outside, voice to text, live streams, while watching/listening to something, and something silly like prompt driven or something like that. I really only like writing outside when it is just cold enough to keep the bugs away because I get bitten really bad for most of the spring/summer. I can't really do a lot by hand because it starts to hurt pretty bad. I think that after you set it up and teach it some of your specific things like names, voice to text is pretty good, especially if you have hand issues. I like the idea of the standing desk, just not sure how long I could do it with my back.

I used to handwrite my stories a lot when I was younger and didn't have a computer (I have literally dozens of half-filled notebooks containing my weirdness, I had no self-control back then), but I have arthritis in both my wrists now, so my main method of writing is my computer. My ideal writing zone is in my basement office, where I have a separate monitor that I can adjust to a good height that doesn't bother my constantly sore neck, a wrist pad for my keyboard so that my poor wrists don't get stiff while typing, a keyboard that I can adjust the height of for the same reason, and a chair whose back goes all the way up to my head so that I can have neck support (I feel like a princess just saying all this but my arthritis has needs). I do like writing in my room as well because of the fun decorations and the fact that it has a window where my office doesn't, but my laptop's screen is too low for me and my neck can get really cramped both from looking down at it and the chair at my bedroom desk has a really low back that doesn't even come up to my neck, so I'm always sore there. I have to sacrifice things to get the things I want, basically. I would love to try writing outside, but I live in Canada and half the year the weather is too damn cold for that!

I'd probably try different locations mostly. At my desk with my desktop computer, at my desk with my laptop, with my laptop in bed, with my laptop in the living room, with my laptop outside (caution: might overheat), and then by hand or by speech-to-text (which I tried today, it went better than expected but was kinda frustrating, since my characters' names never got recognized)

Great video, as always! I find it so interesting that you are able to write with voice to text and get roughly the same results as with other methods. For me, dictating the story aloud is almost impossible, it's like a totally different mindset from all other writing methods, the words just don't come out! Plus if I'm outside I'm constantly worried that someone will listen to me, even if no one is around and they would probably think I'm talking on the phone. Have you ever had a similar problem? And if so, any advice to overcome it? Because I would love to be able to just dictate stuff while I'm walking around, but rn it feels impossible!

For your writing outside have you considered getting a collapsible tray, like what you’d use for eating in bed? It would help prop up your computer and it’d be a bit more comfortable. Might even get more words! 😁 if not a tray you could always use anything else that would help prop it up.

I would choose live streams, voice-to-text, mywriteclub (Pomodoro sprints), without music, with music, outside, and write or die. I love writing outside, though I doubt I could read my handwriting enough to handwrite. I've used voice-to-text before and it's nice because I already say the things I'm typing, though it would be annoying if I wanted to change a sentence in the middle of it. Really late at night, I guess.

I'm not a published author, but I prefer to do scenes that are for the future, that I'm not sure if I want to add, or just any random ideas by hand, then other scenes (aka where I am in my draft at that moment) on the computer. I also don't bother doing any transitions when doing it by hand. I use asterisks. So basically, I'll put *character and character get into a fight* and then write the scene, just to make it easier on myself because transitions will be the death of me someday.

I find that I work slower, but better when I write by hand. I think it’s good to slow down and be deliberate with every word. Makes editing much easier. Also, I find that I’m more creative when I write by hand. Words feel like they flow from my brain, down my arm, into my pen, and onto my paper smoothly. It feels natural. Also, you should look up novelist Tom Robbins’s writing process. He has no outline, or even a sense of one, when he begins. He has an interesting character or scenario. Then he writes one sentence at a time, finding the perfect sentence to follow the one prior. He’ll go over a sentence 30-40 times before writing it down. At the end, he has a novel, and he turns in his first draft, written on a legal pad, to his publisher as his final draft. He’s known for having some of the best sentences of any novelist. Worth checking out for sure.

I think you should repeat this experiment with the addition of other factors, like different locations (once things open back up!) and time of day. I know you’re a morning writer, so it would be neat to see if you do better writing outside with Duke in the morning versus writing your normal way in the evening. My favorite method of drafting is by hand, I stay much more focused and I have a better flow of ideas when I’m not staring at a white screen. I don’t think I could do the talk to text thing at all, I need to see the words or I’ll be so lost!

I write on the IPad, mostly on the Scrivener app but sometimes also Google Docs or others. I cannot honestly write on the PC, mostly because I have a mechanical keyboard that is just so loud and bulky (I do love me some key typing ASMR but mine is just meh). This means I mostly just write on the floor with my doggo, on the couch with my doggo, on my bed with my doggo - I'm seeing a a pattern here. But I do love writing on the Ipad and the flexibility of write anywhere. It's a bit uncomfortable after a while because of my unusual positions but it's really fun for me. When I think about typing on the PC the same story ideas I honestly just loose motivation. On the Ipad I write usually 1-3k words per sitting on the PC I can't go over 500. 😂

I think the word count isn't the right focus when it comes to handwriting, or using a typewriter (maybe another time) - the slower nature of these is actually a different mode altogether for your writing. Certainly when I used a typewriter (I have several for some reason) I had to be much more considered about what to write before I wrote it as it didn't allow for errors without a mess. Writing is slower at the normal pace too, and that slowing down makes for a more thought-led process as well. The other modes you tried are more or less speedier and you write differently that way, not worse or better.

Also, as someone with a connective tissue disease I find it easiest to type on my small phone (iPhone SE, my big new oneplus is too big cause I have really small hands) however I tend to put up with the pain to write on my computer unless the words are coming easily (so most of the time on the computer) because I like to have multiple screens of notes up etc. If I can get myself out of that habit down the line when I’m more used to writing I’d probably prefer the phone for drafting or maybe text to speech if I didn’t lose my voice so much due to being an introvert who doesn’t generally have to do much talking!

I had to switch to speech input for a while because my wrists got really sore from typing! It was a good alternative but good lord the typos I had to clean up later... Also everything sounds so melodramatic when saying it out loud hahaha

#qualitydukecontent! I should do an experiment between handwriting and typing. I already know that when I type the prose is a bit more *barren* then when I write by hand, but I haven't compared word count.

As I have completed 10 NaNoWriMos with a large chunk on my phone during lunch breaks at dayjob, I know this now, but originally found it surprising how seemlessly my brain could move between typing handwriting and phone writing. =)

I actually do a lot of my writing on my phone. Sure, I usually write a lot faster on my laptop, but if I'm having trouble getting out the words, switching over to my phone makes them flow easier for whatever reason.

I have done the writing at my desk, handwritten, livestreams -although never for 30mts- and writing on my phone I am open to other methods. Maybe not the outside with my dogs, mosquitos are relentless here! 😅

Fantastic video! Loved this experiment and seeing the word count averages! I've done voice-to-text a couple times, but I never really liked it simply because of the constant need to edit when it didn't accurately hear my words. Lol I had a writing teacher in high school who refused to let us do our weekly journal assignments typed. It didn't matter what we were writing (and lord knows she knew I was writing lengthy pieces), we had to handwrite everything in composition books. Now I rarely handwrite outside of jotting scenes down during slow periods at work. So I totally feel you on the hand pains/cramps. Not fun. Also, is Duke the best pupper doing okay/better? I remember a while ago you mentioning he had to stay in the garage(?) due to accidents. He's such a sweetie. Oh the joys of youtube... getting attached to strangers' pets. Lmao!

I wanna try writing and standing(I don't have a standing desk so I can't do that right now), speech to text, writing outside, my normal way of writing(computer and sitting on my bed or living eoom), pencil and paper(which I've done before), maybe walking and speaking?(that's a new one lol), and... I don't know lol.

Voice-to-text is very similar for me, but it takes me at least the same amount of cleanup (edit) time as it does to dictate. The older I get, the messier it is, because Siri is having trouble understanding me. LOL I like to settle in the same place (like Steven King). I also like to write by hand when I need to change positions.

Voice to text would be garbo for me. I am not an articulate person when talking 😭😭 that's why I like writing. I can write and rewrite a sentence but I can't unsay the wrong word. I type giant text messages so the phone might actually be doable, lol.

For some reason when I write with my mechanical keyboard instead of my laptop's onboard keyboard I make fewer errors and therefore write faster. Maybe because it's a lot harder to accidently hit 2 keys at the same time with the mechanical keyboard?

As a short side experiment possibility, do you think that their could be a difference between texting on your phone and voice typing? And where? Do you think that maybe if you were using your phone while outside that the numbers could have been higher? Do you think you might have gotten better numbers if you had been walking and voice typing on the phone? And do you think that there could be a better content for each format? I know I have been trying to train myself to do voice typing on my phone when I go outside with my kids. And though I am having a low number of times of this I am finding that this has been good for a outline/zero draft kind of format, especially if I am planning a writing sprint lately. And since I am zero drafting I don't care about grammar or spelling or even if it makes sense. I am looking at the bullet points expanded of what I want to talk about later once I am actually drafting. Okay, that turned out to be more about me than about the experiment, but I am curious about your thoughts. Also another thought, is there a difference between livestreams that you host and ones where you are participating?

I'm actually using voice to text to comment. If it weren't for the fact that I have to speak kind of slow and say all my punctuation, I would really really love using voice to text and would probably use it more often. But I especially have to use it because my hands hurt from all the crafting that I've been doing lately and can't type or write by hand, which are the 2 methods that I love the most. I also don't have the standing desk option, and it wouldn't work either because I have chronic foot pain, So I can't stand for long periods of time, but if I had the standing desk and didn't have the pain then I would definitely love to try that.I would probably want to try different outside locations if I were to do this experiment along with running on laptop and phone and voice to text, Like different parks or outside my apartment building or even in my car.

Normal setup: best amount of words Voice: I haven't tried yet! Handwriting: I have bad handwriting, so I have to go painfully slow if I'm to have any hope of reading it. Duke: I am Dukeless, sadly. Phone: I hate writing on my phone. In fact, most of the time when I dont comment on your videos it's because I'm on my phone. Isn't that horrible? I owe you comments...

Instead of doing speech to text have you tried just recording what you say and then transcribing it? It could be easier since you record yourself for RU-vid anyway.
