"ATTITUDES": Starring Linda Dano & Dee Kelly. 1989. In many ways, "Attitudes", a woman's talk show that aired on LIFETIME in the late 80s/early 90s, was a precursor to "The View".
Here is part 2 of an episode with guest Adrien Arpel and later Phyllis Hyman.
This episode of "Attitudes" is not complete. The interviews with both ladies are intact however. I wasn't going to post this episode since it was incomplete but this very morning I had a dream about one of Phyllis Hyman's interviews and felt she was urging me to post this from the great beyond. Anyone who knows of Phyllis Hyman must realize that she was a very strong presence and wouldn't dare to "disobey" a prompting from her even if she is no longer with us mortally.
I hope fans of both "Attitudes" and Phyllis will appreciate this lost interview. It was here that I got introduced to Phyllis and was captivated by her charisma and what appeared to be her inner strength and peace. Her energy was so infectious and from then I tracked down her music. Sadly, she would only have 5 more years left on the planet with only two more albums to release ("Prime of My Life", an ironic title, in 1991 and, at the time of her death, "I Refuse to Be Lonely" in 1995). Of course, there have been various releases of unreleased material by the record companies that are hoping to capitalize on her passing with a plethora of "tribute" albums. Where were these albums when she was alive?
In any case, enjoy the interview and those of you just learning who Phyllis is, congratulations. Here was a truly sophisticated lady!
SPECIAL NOTE After Phyllis' interview, there is an incomplete segment where Dee talks with Marian Burke, mother of Chris Burke from "Life Goes On", and Bonnie Shapiro about starting their careers while in their 40s. The segment I have here is about 3 minutes long and I apologize that this is all I have but I'm sure the completists out there would rather have part of the interview than not at all.

Now you can really feel her pain, she ached for a family of her own, but was realistic enough to know what she could pass on to her children. She was smarter than a lot of people in that area, but it caused her such anguish. I'm a late Phyllis Phan but her music resonates through you. Unless you're dead, you can't help but feel the emotions in her music. There is only one Phyllis. TVone didn't mention her following of loyal and growing phans. Her music is not in traditional music stores.

Beyond beautiful, inside and out...wow. I recognize her eyes though because they're the same eyes I see in the mirror, same eyes I see in a lot of girls...beautiful eyes but sadness lurks in them, no matter how big a smile on the face. She deserved the love she wanted. I wish she was still here with us. I can't get over how commanding her personality and presence is...she's just awesome.

When Linda was on Another World as Felicia Gallant she used to wear clothes and hats that always reminded me of Phyllis Hyman’s wardrobe. She wore them well. After all these years thinking that, I never knew of this interview or that they had met until now. Am I the only one that noticed the wardrobe similarities?

Wow! Such a sense of humour! What a way to talk out what is hard about oneself and having others laugh about it with you! Unfortunately, often behind this layed back attitude sadness and depression are hidden. An you try to deal with it, once you are alone. She was so sweet! I just happened to discover this lady last week!

To see this interview it is so hard to believe this DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS Queen and Diva of a Lady would have ANY problems in the love department!! I truly believe Lady Phyl had it going on and did not realize it. She was an Artist to the full extent and her intensely passionate personality is and was only for a man that was strong enough to deal with and love her...I relate my sister and I really enjoyed this interview!!

Tjmam5: Keep in mind that some people use drugs and alcohol to cope with bipolar disorder. You are so correct that bipolar worsens the longer it is untreated. Unfortunately, so many folks place such stigmas on folks with biologically-based mental illnesses until these folks would not get the necessary help that they need. I get angry sometimes about Phyllis Hyman. Her suicide could have been prevented.

Dano was leaning so close in I was wondering if she was "interested". Please get a copy of the book Jason A Michael's book, Phyllis Hyman: Strength of a Woman. This woman had an amazing life. But she had bi-polar disorder. It is not the same as depression. Just my opinion. Althouh depression has its own set of difficulties, there are distinct differences between the two that can be problematic for anyone who has it. But there are treatments for it. RIP PH.

She was self-medicating. She was severely bi-polar & would use drugs and/or alcohol to self-medicate. The thing with bi-polar disorder is that the highs are EXTREMELY high w/ the crashes just as low. In addition, she had an addiction to food & ballooned to over 300 lbs by her death. Having these issues through the course of her life affected her self-esteem & made her feel she didn't deserve love & success. Even when things would go well, she'd self-sabotage them so that she'd have nothing.

There has been a lot posted on the net about how difficult she was. I have been in love with her since 1977 and want to believe that all the negative things that people said about her were untrue. I often wonder that had we met, would she have been attracted to me and would I have LIKED her. It has been 13 years since her passing, but there is not a day that goes pass that I don't think about her and mourn her passing.

Read her biography in "Strength of a Woman" to gain greater insight into her story. It's quite enthralling & you really feel for her. As strong & captivating as she was, she was extremely vulnerable & in need of a love that would never be enough because she couldn't perceive the love she already had around her. Also, her bi-polar disease is being discussed because, like it or not, it's part of who she was. It isn't done in the spirit of malice. We're posting w/ the greatest affection for her. The fact that she took her life is what prompts us to discuss that aspect of her life. It's an attempt by those who loved her to understand why she would do such a thing. Understand that this is where I'm coming from. I have nothing but love for her. I wouldn't have posted this video if I didn't.

damn. i need to go a bit deeper as i read the prior comments. i get what edster and respectn2009 is saying. what i want you all to know is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with extremes in emotions. it's how you direct them. for instance, i, too, am addicted to foods. however, i am addicted to quality food (like she said about wendy's - this is so spooky!) but i realize that quality foods are living foods and, with that said, have adopted a raw food lifestyle.

I myself wasn't offended; just surprised at the question. As for her deep sadness, it's explained in detail in her biography by Jason A. Michael "Strength of a Woman". I highly recommend getting it. The details of her bi-polar disorder, insecurities, drug & alcohol abuse and her battles of the bulge help any fan of hers to understand why she found herself in the predicament that she was in. Very insightful and a worthy tribute to the lady.

Yes, everyone has issues but when you couple that with drugs, food, and alcohol addictions simulanteously, its prescription spells disaster. Phyllis coped as best she could and used what she were effective methods. Dipolar disease worsens with time if not treated. Her use of the above only pushed the ticking time bomb faster until she was totally out of control. She is still the best singer I know and sings rings around what's out there, let's give her the props she deserves.

Bi-polar disorder can't be healed simply by figuring out what set in motion one's problems. If she had had a perfect life w/ no problems, she still would've had issues simply because her internal body chemistry was off kilter. Granted, her other problems didn't help any; if anything, they exacerbated her downward spiral. Figuring out her other issues wouldn't have prevented her disorder. It can't be cured or prevented that way.

I mean I have to be on my P's and q's all the time. Cancers have emotions and just one of them having disaster in a relationship it can end like a fingersnap. Not saying a woman should just say yes....but when you first look at phyllis....she's over 6'0 ft tall (taller than me), she wears her outfits which resembles being a strong black queen (notice how I say queen in stead of woman....im classy) and one word....you mess up. Whoa, take a chill pill dude. It's common knowledge that Phyllis was bi-polar. It's documented in the book about her life as well as by people WHO ACTUALLY KNEW HER (sisters, her manager, colleagues, etc.). She was officially diagnosed with the disease as far back as in 1980 or so. Her mother was also mentally ill in addition to other members of her family. I know you mean well but your suggestion that we don't know what we're talking about is wrong. We're going on official knowledge.

Furthermore, based on other posts that you've made elsewhere (which I've read by the way), you seem to have a desire to promote the faith that you have in God & Jesus Christ. How you've done so in this case is to dismiss an illness. Bi-polar disorder is a real disease. It can't be turned off or extinguished w/an attitude adjustment or a religious conversion. To suggest otherwise as to further your desire to become steadfast in your faith is the most un-Christlike thing any Christian can do.
