It is so hard to hide the pain from depression - you can only fake so much and you get tired of doing that too. People read it incorrectly and think other things because you may not be able to laugh, or you may not want to join the group for fun - because no one understands that the sun rarely shines when you are fighting depression - and NO medication is not the answer. It really is a personal fight that you must fight alone - I really believe no one can help you fight it - it really is a one-on-one battle. Some days you win, and a lot of days you lose, and it is those days of constantly losing which is why a lot of us suffering from depression just give up. I was fighting depression and also lost my mother in August 2015, and the following words really do fit - "I was holding on for my very life, at the end of my line as the flames burned so high, had my back against the wall and no time to run away - surrounded by the world they were calling out my name, and I was so sure it was all over when out of the shadows came a light that saved me - just in time". These are a few of the meaningful lyrics sung in a song by the legendary Deniece Williams, called "Just In Time". Boy does it have meaning........................

Segdirb I so sorry to hear but the best thing is to do is let go and let God handle your problems that's the only way you will survive and start all over to a new life. None of us can't fight on our own and yes we all go through the different struggles but God is the only way that can and will fight our battles and can remove all of the sadness to our happiness days. I actually saw her in NYC about 9 years before she died. I was 17 years old working at David's cookies in Greenwich Village. She came in and asked for two chocolate chip cookies. She looked beautiful and was dressed so classy. Oh yeah, she is very tall. I had to ask, "Are you a model"? She said, "No." She thanked me for the cookies and her change and she walked out. I couldn't help, but watch her until she was out of view. Such a tragedy.😔

I'm a cancerian myself... I'm also a empath... it's all about staying balanced!!! I pray she is at peace... this world was indeed to much for her... speaking on feeling... Robin Williams was also a cancerian... and he committed suicide on the night of a full moon... in a cancerian group I observed many Cancerians having a hard time that night including myself.... I was restless with soo many thoughts and couldn't figure out WHY,... I Truly believe signs have a huge impact on how one feels... #RIP

It still is called manic depression. Both are acceptable terminologies. It was known back then, and she knew it. But she couldn’t call it that; the stigma was and still is very much prevalent. People are still dying from this condition, despite the many treatments. The condition itself is awful; the natural ups and downs of life exacerbate the symptoms, and these cannot be measured or predicted. He mother and grandmother passed away not long before she died. Had she not succeeded in ending her life then, another major loss may have sent the pendulum swinging again.

it seems pretty rare for a performer to be so candid about mental health struggles in an interview from the ‘80s. Obviously interviews like this take on greater significance with the tragic reality that would follow. In many ways, this feels like a cry for help. It’s very sad she didn’t get the help she needed at the time.

I am a Cancer myself and those highs and lows with no middle I've been telling that to my family for awhile. This is the first time I've ever heard someone say they went through exactly that. The middle is truly something to work on. The middle helps you confront people and speak up for yourself without exploding and seeming too angry or too depressed. The middle is even, logical and balanced. The middle is grounded. I could go on because I understand that so well. As cancers we truly do FEEL everything. We are more aware than any other sign twds the feelings of others as well I believe. It is so overwhelming at times. I literally have to take breaks from people to regain my internal focus on myself, my goals and my creative niches. I have to regain that energy from all of the emotional rifts we experience dang near daily dealing with people who have problems. Man Phyllis was probably really in pain. What a lovely lady she was.

I know some people will say if they want to kill themselves their gonna do it. That great sister along with others do not want to die. They’re tired and they feel like no one gives a fuck. This woman is so intriguing to me. I hesitate to watch any RU-vid videos about her because she’ll keep coming up in my feed then the next thing you know, I’m on RU-vid for hours study Phyllis Hyman. I can definitely reflate to the business matters she’s talking about because I’m having those same challenges in my business now. Though I’m paid handsomely in my business and I call the shots, the pressure of it all is so exhausting and tremendous (especially as the business expands) that there are days I cry at night and wish I had a regular 9-5, so I can clock out and leave it all behind. But as you so eloquently said, that’s just not in my nature to give it over to others to tend to. At any rate, thank you Phyllis for being a role model to other Black female entrepreneurs. No matter what they say, you did it your way and I honor you for that. I hope that one day your life will be made into a movie. Even though you’re gone, it is so much the younger generation can lean from you. Also thank you for being unapologetically Black! Gone, but never forgotten, you Sophisticated Lady.

Wow, After several plus decades I’ve found myself researching and listening to the music of Phyllis Hyman again; This time with the inspiration to paint her (artistically) in HONOR for the extraordinary talented artists that she was! I also feel the resurrected painfully broken heart I had when I learned of her tragic departure from this life, back then. At that time, like today I just wished that she could have found the help that she so desperately needed. *Like the Luther Vandross’s, and Whitney Houston’s, etc. of the 90’s and today, we lost a very valuable talent back then. *Hey young people, if you’re a musician, singer or ordinary person, research her and listen to her music and interviews. She was one very smart and talented person with a powerful ability to inspire others! RIP; DIAMOND DIVA

I always found her an interesting unique class act & voice - ever since I heard and got her sinlgle "Loving You, Loosing You". She had such a mystique about herself that drew your attention. Why she was not all over the place big like other contemporaries at the time still is hard to believe. Her last noticeable hit, "Living all Alone" is a song I rarely play because it's among my sacreds. My only fault with that song was, it needed to be about 2/3 minutes longer. It's heart aching agony just goes right through me, whenever I finally play it & I wanna cry abit. Then she's gone off back in '95. Well thank you dear Sister for what you gave us, and see you in Jehovah & Christs great resurrection.🤗

I saw her at the Club Bene in NJ about a year before she died. She used to play there every year. She was very unwell, so much so that many people left. Some requested refunds. She was in such distress throughout the show.. When she would sing, she was majestic. She was a talented artist living with tremendous emotional pain. I remember when I heard about her death. It seemed she didn't see things getting better. Looking back, I think her career recognition earlier in her life kept her going in some ways. By 1995, she may have been feeling cast aside at a deeper level. She was getting older and the focus was on artists like Whitney and Mariah. I recall she was pretty bitter about it.

I always thought it was strange that in her album notes she thanked her psychiatrist. I read many liner note and that was the first time I'd seen a tribute like that.

It’s crazy how similar our charts are. I also experience those same highs and lows and often feel ostracized because of them. I was born an Aquarius and same as Ms. Phyllis, have Sagittarius Rising and Moon. She was a Cancer, which is my Mars sign and we share some of the same aspects as well. Such as Moon trine Venus, Jupiter opposition Venus and Moon square Saturn. Whew! I feel your pain girl 😩

It’s amazing how she described Bi polar disorder without saying it. I’m confident she reached out for help several times before taking her own life. Hell of a talent and sorely missed. RIP Ms. Hyman

Balancing emotions and thoughts are a major challenge for most human beings. Mental illness runs in my paternal family. I'm a Gemini barely (last day before Cancers) and I have it hard sometimes not feeling mean, and evil intermittently. But, when I call on that strong Tower The name of God suddenly my emotions, thoughts and priorities began to slowly change. If we were all together every day we wouldn't need nothing or anybody especially not our Creator who desires every hurting Soul to constantly need and acknowledge Him. We can't make it by ourselves alone and be mentally stable. 🙏🏽

RIP The most amazing classy jazz entertainer I have ever listen to. I miss her performances so much. I have tons of her music and at times it's very difficult to listen to her without crying. She was a inspiration to me and I often tried to sound like her not even close. No more pain and suffering just peace. Thank you for gracing us with your angelic voice.

My God! I definitely needed to hear this and didn't know it! My two business partners burned the shit out of me! Talk about being traumatized! I'm dealing with highs and lows of anxiety! I was that individual that trusted them and was just happy to have a job and doing good! I have definitely learned a lesson not to completely trust your business partners no matter who they are! I've never heard the statement "Don't ask someone to do something for you that you can do for yourself". I'm taking those words of wisdom with me! Thank you for sharing Phyllis Hyman and may you rest in peace!

I Love me some Phyllis Hyman !! Her music was timeless & will forever live on. We both share the same Birthday 07/06. Mental illness/Mental health is real. I firmly believe that she did all she to try n fight her demons but they overtook her. As a Cancer I totally empathize with Phyllis I too battle with Clinical Depression/Anxiety an am a Sexual abuse survivor. As well as 2x Suicide Attempt Survivor. Us as a community we need to be more vocal & don’t have to be strong all the time!! We can’t heal what we don’t reveal

Extreme highs and Extreme lows has nothing to do with the signs it’s bipolar disorder and I think she knew it but people weren’t trying to talk about it back then, they still don’t wanna talk about it. as someone who is BP I understand her deeply and I hate that she didn’t get the help she so desperately needed and I believe she wanted. She was an amazing artist her music forever resonates with me.

Well you have to take into consideration a lot of people are coming to this video to get to know her. And the first thing that stands out beyond her amazing voice and stage presence is her striking beauty. Me, myself, I'm on here under the search: "The life story of Phyllis Hyman". You know to get to know and learn her history and these are the vids that pop up. I haven't had a chance to know about her hard times so I'm here to learn. But she is very beautiful. Amazes ME how that cannot be taken as a compliment. Idk. People

Hi Cece, I completely comprehend what you have expressed. The ebb-n-flow of emotions are not fully understood by many. My sun is Taurus, my moon is Sag, my rising is Cancer and the only aspect of this Astro-disposition that grounds me is Taurus. Other than that, what Phyllis experienced emotionally, I continually manage on a moment-to-moment basis. Those extremes are real but manageable. Holla at me if you need someone who is a good listener, and to freely express yourself without judgement and criticism. Peace.

Listen to Anthony Hamilton glad that you called from the album southern comfort I was feeling sad and depressed and I just purchased the album and played it thru ( I originally bought it for track falling in love again) it took me to a higher place and helped me thru my troubled times. We all suffer from some mental depression some deeper than others our sister didn't have the support network she craved. All those tall Afroamerican men should have dated her one of you professional basket ball players could have given her the Love she craved. R est E eternal P peace.
