I haven't followed this case but must say the mayor's public statement is lacking in credibility and downright cringe-worthy. She comes across as not just defiant but trying to wear the cloak of victimhood with this weirdly insincere set of remarks.

"I blame wealthy people and/or conservatives" actually has a lot of workability in California. California voters are incredibly susceptible to confirmation bias, and that bias here is "vote blue no matter who".
Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. She probably said something that hurt her case. A lawyer's job is to get you off the hook, not prove you innocent. She probably killed that option by talking.

@@alicekramden8640 Not just Oakland. Look at Homeland Security(Mayorkas), three of our Congressmen (Tlaib Omar Jayapal), the US Surgeon General(Vivek Murthy) and the President of every university occupied by "protestors" . Everyone of them foreign nationals.
Also, it seems that if she did not consult him prior to her statement then there is no relationship. She disrespected him by doing that whether she realizes it or not. If he told her his approach and she ignored it and did whatever she wanted then why would he want to represent her. I don't think it shows culpability but rather bad judgment on her part.
Any attorney will tell their client, especially a high profile one, to shut up. She didn't, so he quit. This is good advice for anyone arrested. Let your lawyer do the talking. The police are not arresting you because they want to be your friend. They don't want "to help you get out from under this", or "see it from your point of view". All you are doing is giving them more evidence to convict you with.
So, a Vietnamese American named Duong who came here in 1979 and still has a business in Vietnam may have contributed to various city council members and other politicians to be allowed to buy land owned by Oakland for his business. He also overcharged some businesses for services and it was resolved this year. It seems like Duong is the nexus of the FBI investigation.

He paid to for exclusive contract with the city. Leagally that isn't in the laws of the city but Andy Duong and his family that came here in 1975 plan to own Oakland. Then they will write all the laws.

Former federal prosecutor who is her defense attorney probably told her to "shut up" and "don't make public statements you'll regret later." She went ahead with a press conference. Attorneys hate clients who don't listen to their advice, which is why her attorney fired her.
Yes attorney's don't like it when you have a press conference and toss out a bunch of stuff that will come back to bite you when you do get arrested etc
I was not a boyscout growing up, so I have been in the back of squad cars.. So I actually had a very high profile lawyer.. He gave me 1 instruction.. If you talk to the police or media.. I will not represent you. Do not engage in seemingly innocent conversation as when they are questioning you, they are the enemy trying to trick you. Every person who proclaim innocence are the ones that go to prison.
