The cable should come off the bottom of the drum and straight out through the roller fairlead. Never seen one come of the top and down to the fairlead and out .

Am I the only one that saw the new rope get wound in the wrong direction? It is supposed to wind under the winch drum for optimal operation.

Concise, utile, easy to understand. I currently unspooled my rusty steel cable for the first time in a long time. It was a chore and somehow the "out" became "in" 2/3s of the way!?! I managed to get the whole cable out eventually by securing one end of the cable around a tree and then gently throttling the machine in reverse. Once out, I put on sturdy water-proof gloves. I got a small rag and a can of rust paint (silver gray). I poured the rust paint onto the rag, then ran the rag down the entire cable adding paint as needed (hence the sturdy water-proof gloves). In minutes, what once was a rusty cable transformed into a new looking cable!! You get better/faster coverage using a rag than a brush or spray AND you actually use less paint. I'm going to lube the winch system as per this video but I'm thinking I might re-spool the cable running it through a bar of dry hard soap. I think a steel cable will rust up fairly quickly even if oiled so cyclic maintenance and this rag trick won't take too much time while keeping the cable in decent condition. *Makre SURE your newly painted cable is completely dry before re-spooling. With this rag-painting-process and soap, I won't get oil all over stuff if/when I use the cable. Thank you for this vid Sir!

Didn't watch the whole video, but you need to change the rollers too or they will mess up your new rope. Cable creates fractures on the rollers, you can easily feel these with your fingers, and these will damage the rope.

How come his cable comes from the top thought all cables should come from bottom when winding in...
@miatafunrun3078
@miatafunrun3078 3 года назад
Agree. He has it wrong. Watch other videos esp. the ones from WARN and you will see it comes from the bottom and the drum rotates in the other direction. So he has it feed in wrong and the in/out cables reversed.

Shouldn't that rope be wound up by rolling it on the bottom of the drum and not the top?

Lol, my dad got the winch stuck on the rollers (brought it in too far) and now we can’t even do the free release. Looks like it’s time for an upgrade

What do you think would be better in winter for snow plowing the wire or rope?

@@Krayziebone456 Alright. What I was going to tell you would just be for plowing. Did you ever hear about using a strap in place of your wire rope?
@Krayziebone456
@Krayziebone456 3 года назад
@@ronaldstrayer580 I did think of using a strap already
@ronaldstrayer580
@ronaldstrayer580 3 года назад
@@Krayziebone456 I can tell you it works. I busted my steel cable a few days ago plowing. After it broke I unspooled the cable and found multiple bad spots with it, till it was all said and done there was about 8 or 10 feet left. I seen different people on the internet saying they used a strap to plow with. Those recovery straps that have hooks on both ends is what I used. I cut the one end off it so its roughly 8-9 feet long and put it on the winch. My winch drum had a hole for the cable to go through then there was a set screw so that wasn't going to work for the strap. There was different ways guys attached their straps to their drums on the internet. I watched a guy his video is called Installing a strap onto a winch on RU-vid, and thats how I put mine on. My bottom roller on my fairlead was chewed up from my cable so I just hit it with sandpaper first. Knock on wood, its working great.

I wouldn’t follow any of this guys advice. He has the rope winding over the top of the drum which is wrong and he also has a roller fairlead which is just for steel cable. You need to replace that with a smooth rope fairlead. Duh!
