not a nebula subscriber, don't know what happens, actively rooting for Sam and Toby, I don't think that bottle flip is going to land and it's very likely a handful of more customers show up, like, let's just be honest here, statistically speaking a challenge is almost never completed on the last attempt, if Sam was good enough at bottle flipping to be able to finish the challenge, he would have done it already, other than that, Ben and Adam's best prediction to get the best range should have been 16.66, as the range would have been 10-23

Did feel like a bit of a dud that one. Should have been a bit more to it. More like, your team mate will pick one, and then you have to make three guesses and NOT pick that letter.

Yeah, that one felt a bit ridiculous, especially with the three guesses. I mean, even without obvious stuff like that, picking completely randomly, it is three guesses on 8 letters, you have a 1/8 chance + 1/7 chance + 1/6 chance for ~43.5% odds of getting a correct guess. Only slightly against you, and you get to dump most of your money beforehand (reducing risk on your end) and block them from using theirs, removing the risk that they might spend some of their money before you were finished (as opposed to them just not knowing about the challenge until it is over, where they can't cheese it, but I understand that they want to be able to show reactions and nervousness, which works better if they know in advance). Pretty good odds considering the reward and risk even if it was completely random, which it wasn't.

@@wolfwhitefire I'm gonna be nerding here, but you can't add probabilities like that. One obvious way to see that is that if they got 6 tries instead of 3, your method predicts a 1/8+1/7+1/6+1/5+1/4+1/3 ~ 121% chance of being correct, while they definitely could still have lost. The actual way to calculate it is to look for the probability of _not_ getting it. It's 7/8 at the first try, 6/7 at the second try and 5/6 at the third try, so an overall probability of 7/8 * 6/7 * 5/6 ~ 62%. So a probability of getting it in three tries or less of ~ 100 - 62 = 38%. Still pretty good!

@@wolfwhitefire Your math is wrong, the chance is 3/8 = 37.5%. Just look at it backwards: Toby picks 3 letters at random and Sam has to pick one of those letters, i.e. one of 3 correct letters out of 8. The events aren't independent, that's why 1/7 for the second guess is not correct. Your chance to guess it correctly the second time is 7/8 to guess the first one wrong multiplied by 1/7 to guess the second one correctly, which is 1/8.

I imagine the hope is that the errors in either direction would mostly cancel out and help narrow the range of guesses. And then using known errors to narrow it down further. Granted, they only had 1 minute and were only off by 5 so not terrible far off (bit over 5%).

It's fascinating that season 9 had so few challenges and yet season 10 is predicated on the challenges with the episodes ending with the players in mid-challenge. I'm curious though about the intellectual side of it. The rules only said land a bottle on it's top, right? Empty out all that fluid moving around and put some coins and/or sand in the lower 1/4 of the bottle or so...certainly would improve chances and offset the dexterity issues

Getting three guesses to guess which letter your partner picks in the Brisbane feels like too many guesses. I know they got it in one, but for a 40% steal of your opponents money, having at worst a 33% chance feels way too powerful.

I liked where Toby’s head was at for calculating the boba, but the one big problem was that Boba pearls aren’t rigid, and would therefore would squish together and have a higher packing density than the standard 74% sphere packing density.

Depends on how squishy the pearl are, and how much force is being exerted on them by the weight of the tea. Using their estimate formula and the actual number of boba balls, we can work out that the actual packing density of the balls was 85.3%, their eyeballed estimate of the volume of the cup was correct, which I recognize is a massive assumption. If they overestimated the volume of the cup and/or underestimated the size of a pearl, that would've partially cancelled out their underestimate of the packing density, but more likely is that they either underestimated the volume of the cup and/or overestimated the size of a pearl, and the mistakes compounded on each other. Or their estimate was more or less correct, and there just really is that much difference in the packing density.

It’s a Poisson distribution with mean of ~14.3 (median ~14.6). 15 would’ve been the safest bet with a range of [9,21]. Without even thinking about the math, my instinct was 18. Gives you breathing room at the top if the market of getting busier as the day goes on, but ensures that 10, which you did get previously, is safe. 20 was wild when 10 and 11 are very much possible.

@@cindella204Picking 18 wouldn't include 10 in the eligible range of results. 18×0.6=10.8, so 10 isn't within 40% of 18. You need to pick 16 (or less) for 10 to be within 40% of the guess.

It is killing me that Ben and Adam got 10,14,20 for people visiting a stall in 10 min intervals, then said 10 was the outlier and chose 20.... I know we don't have all the variables, but as a data analyst this is driving me insane. It is also the reason we shouldn't trust human intuition when it comes to statistics. If Toby was there this was a lock for sure!

Especially with a thinner bottle, but really with any bottle, a little water helps it stick the landing and not bounce as well as keeping the center of mass low. It helps more when you try to land the bottle the right way around, and I'm not sure if the amount of water that is most effective might change, but full or empty are some of the worst choices you could make for flipping a bottle. Especially empty.

There is a very cool way to have the timtam, take a small bite of two opposites corners of the cookie, and then use it as a straw to drink a coffee, the coffee will go through the chocolate, and soften the cookie into some sort of wet cake

One idea i had for a future jetlag game is to race from the top of Norway (Svelbard) to the lowest point of Africa, South America, or Australia but each team can only occupy one time zone at any time If a team wants to occupy a time zone that another team is using they will have to force the opposing team to jump forward/back a few timezones First team to leave Norway gets to pick whatever time zone they want to travel by, teams can only travel through countries/regions within their specified time zone unless they choose to move to another time zone

Have you actually looked at a map of time zones? The line between Svalbard and South Africa is parallel to the time zones. Aside from Libya, Namibia and South Africa, who opted to belong to the +2 timezone, everything is in +1. South America isn't much better; you'd travel inside +1 to the next international airport, take a flight to Brazil or Argentina in +3 and stay there till you reach your destination. Most variation would be to detour to London in 0 for the ocean-hopping flight. Australia by land and ferry would be interesting, but there's a very tiny corridor between Russia and Iran you'd have to take. And another one between Afghanistan and China. Also, those routes would either be 99% long-distance flights or go through too many countries, not all safe to travel through.

For anyone wondering in summer, Brisbane is 1hr behind Sydney as they don't do daylight savings. Adelaide however does do daylight savings, and they're 30min behind Sydney. Hence why Ben&Adam started at 7am compared to Sam&Toby 630am start even though they're further west. Daylight savings is a bit screwy here in Australia
