Excellent review from a well educated owner and not a mechanic. Great to watch as this is very likely the motor that I will seek in my next Audi. I do know a fair amount about them already, but your advice sure gives more insight. Thanks!
I'm sure everyone here already mentioned; no. The water pump is not a supercharger off job. Leave it on, remove the two coolant pipes that go vertically and the belts. One doesn't necessarily say the other is failing. 44k miles and the water pump went, thermostat is fine and is staying in. PCV and thermostat? Yes. Good video all around.
You missed a huge one… terrible OEM cats. You gotta replace with test pipes or just completely decat otherwise the OEM cats will get clogged up and fail
Owner of a S4 B8 Avant with manual gearbox and 125.000km on the clock. Since I live in Germany, everything is expensive as hell to get fixed. At 115.000km I had to do the timing chain and also replaced the clutch on that occasion (6800€ bill), replaced the front wheel bearings, and now I guess I have to get the clutch pedal master cylinder replaced. On the maintenance side, I replaced all driving belts, water pump, gearbox oil, spark plugs, and brake pads and disks. 10 years later the design still looks good...
Great video. But I thought you said you'd mention a few things about the DSG transmission. Heard and read a lot of issue about it (DL501). The stories make me more scared of the transmission than the engine.
Good vid. Temp, Thermostat, and coolant tank at 80k miles. Then suspension components - Bushings will likely go if you live in cities with rough roads, as well as your shocks - at 70k, you'll feel it. At 90k you'll definitely feel it. With this, your lower, upper control arms at front, then various other suspension components depending on where you live (I live in a city with terrible roads with speed bumps in the highway). Overall, this car is very low maintenance. The Iridium plugs should last up to 60k miles, but it can go well - never had a misfire on my car. Oil will start burning off - likely need head gasket replaced. Plan this out and you can save some money on the work you need done.
I’m looking at one that runs great but found multiple misfires pending. Not sure if this can just be spark plugs and air filter/ tune up items. Is it probable this will resolve? Most importantly what are the most common culprits
I'm looking to buy an A6 C6 3.0Tfsi, good content, thanks. Probably i'll replace waterpump and pcv at begining maybe chain and belts too. Is there any known issue about oil consumption like 2.0tfsi's ? Is Pistons reliable ? I had 4 Total engine rebuilds last 5 years, 2 of them A4 b8 and my Honda fk2. Audi had bad rebuilds and Honda had bad software which knocks at boost. I dont want again a engine rebuild adventure.
Informative video - thanks. You didn’t mention any issues with catalytic converter‘s for these engines. I’ve done a little bit of research and seen quite a bit of discussion on the subject. I’ve been noticing a rattle when decelerating just before the engine shifts into the next lower gear (on a b8.5 S4 with 126 km or 78k miles on it). I thought it might be a rusty exhaust bracket or something of the like, but couldn’t find anything like that. I was thinking it might be the cats that are starting to fall apart inside, and that’s when I noticed all the pinned discussion points on catalytic converters. What is your experience in this area?
From what I understand the cats are located right next to the exhaust manifolds. They're a pain to get to. Chances are if you are only experiencing a rattle on acceleration, it could be the flex pipe next the exhaust that has worned out or ripped. I recommend checking that area first before pulling the cats out. If you aren't on a tune then you should be okay. Also check the PCV valve as well. If that fails, oil might get into the exhaust too and could wear it out too.
It’s the flex pipe, mines done it for a few months now and I thought it was cats, but the flex pipe is prone to tearing. Look up some videos of it it’ll probably be exactly what’s wrong
@@danieltene2048 yes, it was the flex pipes. Sadly, there are no aftermarket options, unless you go to much simplified system (ie louder). So, I think that the parts alone were CDN$1800.
Have a 2009 3.0T. Belt blew out on me 2 weeks ago and ended up changing pretty much the entire assembly (tensioner, harmonic balancer which had the rubber lining practically falling apart throughout, idler pulley). Went ahead and did the same w the supercharger belt. Got just about 115k as well so heads up to anyone coming up on that was quite the hassle
What idiot keeps original pump fpr 200k km or 110k miles ... u must change it every 30 40k miles or 60 90k km lol reason why 70% engines eather bmw or audi or the others is stupid owners and lifetime parts they beleve
@@cornholio4510 doesn't mean your an idiot. Sure maintenance tells you to replace around that mileage, but you can get away without having to. You should fix when you notice a issue presented or go ahead and replace it at the intervel. Up to the person if they have the money or not.
@@European_carclub well if they don't have money to do maintence then should not buy such cars at first place. Or at least when they buy such car and do not do services before stuff brakes then should not cry for new engine trans or suspension
@@cornholio4510 well I agree if you don't have the money to afford the car do not purchase but no one is complaining about any issues. The first guy above is laughing that the water pump started leaking. I work on cars and I believe it's good to change a part, for example the belts. If you notice cracking I'd Change it but engineers give a rough estimate for these types of services for people who don't fully understand how to work on cars. It's everyone's choice at the end of the day.
People here might think I'm an audi hater. I assure you I'm not. I had an audi a6 that I loved but one thing that car was not was reliable. People always talk about reliability as if it connected to taste. Until you learn to be impartial with brands. You won't really now what reliability is. That was my case. I've owned Mazda, Audi, Toyota, Honda, mitsubishi etc. And I know it's all anecdotal. But I've save so much money since I switched to Toyota it's insane. Most Toyota cars are not fun. It's quite a bummer. But damn they are reliable. My audi was comfy, luxurious, fun and started conversations with others all the time. I get that. But I was suffering financially because of it. Both of my Toyota cars now have almost 200 thousand miles and all I do is fluid changes, tires and filters. And I live in a state where we get rough winters. And not a spot with rust. I'm not against fun cars or anything. I've dreamed about buying a gtr since I was like 10 years old but I'm so glad that I finally know what true reliability really is. And the money I've saved OMG. I guess this time and age. You have to choose between reliability and fun. Just saying. I hope this comment helps others out there.
These cars are for singles with a good pay stable job, or mechanically incline people. Parts are expensive and if you use cheap parts you create other issues in the car.
True before I have gti all the time problems now I have my camry 3.5 it's saw saw saw reliable and its saw powerful for people think its slow it's true I smach many good car in the road and I keep my money in my pocket if you need sam think you motivated you go to you tube and put camry v6 vs mustang 5.0 and you understand and thank you for your honesty I like my car more 😊
Nothing beats Toyota reliability, there is no other car brand I would say that can match up to Toyota reliability, Honda is probably the closest it gets to Toyota reliability
I have a 2012 Audi A6 Quattro. I’m getting a p0089 code leading to fuel pressure sensors. My question is how difficult is the it to remove the Supercharger? The low pressure is under it!
I have A7 2012. To remove the supercharger you should ask for profesionals. Theres plenty of plugs, hoses, places where you can plug in different locations, and so on. I was changing pcv unit, it is under supercharger, so you basicaly ripping off whole engine
hey man thank you for this info. Ive got a 2013 B8.5 S4 Avant here in New Zealand 8 years in ive done pcv t stat and water pump. The only major stuff i love my S4 such a great car.
Once a. Year what world I you living in 😂 smh 2/3 times a year and at 5 k miles. And check oil once a month. This clear no very informative or know. But now u know
I’ve got that rattle on startup on my A8, an estimate for timing chain replacement? Also, at highway speeds, my air suspension purges the system and runs flat until I quickly pull over and shut the car off and restart it twice. That works every time to restart the suspension system then it runs like a dream again. Thoughts anyone? I think it’s a relay issue with the suspension.
@@matthewthedude146 yaknow what, I had went to my local Audi shop, they replaced the front left and right level sensors, and she’s running like a dream again. The rattle might be a timing chain, or even just a loose gasket. Not sure yet. Thanks!
@@TaylorDoesItAll if the rattle goes away within 1 to 3 seconds after start up its within acceptable range. If the rattle lasts longer than 3 seconds it can be a problem particularly with the upper tensioners
First of all I can see you are from GB. I don't get it why don't you use metric system rather then imperial? On the other hand. AUDI !!!! I have c7 form 2011 with 3.0 tdi engine and dsg transsmision. 180kW of power. Jesus this car is dissaster. At 226 000 km I had to do whole service. So that means chain, chain tensioner, wather pump, engine mount and the lost goes for another 20 or 30 items. And after a few thousand kilometers the dsg mechatronic failed even tough in my service book stays that oil in transsmision was changed every 60 000km like audi advises. Aaaaaand before all of this beautiful sweet story I had to replace my rear axle. I live in a land where there is a lot of salt on the road. That salt and mud and water can stick between plastic cover on rear axle that supposed to protect the rear axle from that same thing. In that space between plastic cover and axle itself is whete the corrosion started to appear. Long story short. Tottaly unreliable car. Never again audi.
I’ve owned the S4 for a couple yesrs now problem free as I speak but would like to say I much prefer the super charged engine to turbo as there’s no lag and with a stage 1 tune the thing really pulls with low down torque it’s a great all rounder, prior to owning the s4 I had a golf R which was fast but hated the turbo lag, if your thinking of buying one go for it and don’t be worried about buying one with a tune on it already the engine can hold the extra power no problem but you might want to upgrade the brakes
Excellent content! Just made a check list to go over as I am going to view a 2013 Q7 premium. Thanks again! Have my list ready if I buy the car I will be following the maintenance you mentioned!
Thanks. I actually watched this to precaution against what else I have to replace on my a7. Well.. I've experienced all the problems you mentioned and replaced the whole lot. That's good news.
Yeeah, remember that these engines have problems with catalytic converters and if they are broken, It is very common that they melt the cylinders closest to them :) 300 000km cars might be in better shape than 130 000km driven cars..
I thought this was good original material but then watched the FCP version of this (published 5 months earlier than this one) and he shows all the parts and covers things in a bit more detail (as if he's actually done the work on the engines). The overall content and comments are exactly the same so a bit disappointed with this one...
Hey just wanna say great video just subscribed to your channel I’ll be watching your videos. Looking to get a Audi s7 or a7 pretty mechanically inclined just don’t know what platform is going to be the most reliable.
@@adenbaksh4843 67k at the time. Now at 69k and running good as new (after getting the work done and raising hell at Audi). Great car, just pricey maintenance without warranty
Pretty much… 3 things on this motor that almost always happen are water pump, thermostat and PCV as well as the breather behind it. And carbon build up which you should take care of every 60-80k miles.
Hi I bought a S5 2017 recently and noticed that theres a ticking sound coming from the engine. I cant work out what it is and the local garages dont really know about high performance cars and dont want to deal with it either. Any one have the similar issue or have any idea whats going on ? any help would be appreciated
Probably the timing chain tensioner. Make sure your up to date with your oil and that the belt is good. If it continues you might want to get the tensioner checked
Hi All , I've got an S5 convertible, with 67k miles, thermostat went , Just out for a blast stopped for coffee, within a mile of leaving coffee shop, temperature went into red, car nagging me to stop ,, towed to a garage, they replaced, thermostat, water pump, etc , total bill £500 ,, No warning at all... Still love the car ....
I just now stumbled upon this video. Decided to give this gen A6 and this engine a try, becausenof how well tunable they are with revo. Compared to my C5 S6, it doesn't have the same v8 rumble, but the supercharger really spreads the torque across much larger area and the euro higher euro standard cits the road tax to 1/3rd of my current one, so probably would jump in and try out the stage1+ or stage 2 remaps.
Thanks for the insight brother, doing some research before I buy my mom's 2015 a6 s-line. Only 52k on the odometer but it has developed a nasty oil leak, just gonna give her a good once over and hit the problem areas you mentioned.
@@lxve9089 I ended up buying the the A6. I’ve put 25,000km on since December. Haven’t had an issue, never seen the check engine light. On issue was the head light bulb went out on me.
@@oliverburton8486 really good choice, but how’s the fuel consumption? I’m thinking of buying one too after summer, I’m buying the sedan version instead of the avant
I have a 2010 model s4 b8, had random missfires, so I decided to change the pcv as a few forums said that could be the issue, it was a big mission, ended up changing a few broken pipes, original pcv was and thermostat where fine, but it was in bits so I replaced them anyway £350, my random missfires turned out to be blocked cats.
Great info! Looking at s like 3.0 and has multiple misfires pending although can’t tell driving. Any other symptoms or codes? And was it the final fix?
My Audi q5 with 3.0T won’t stop hard starting even after I changed the fuel pump, crank shaft position sensors and fuel rail sensor. What else can I do?
A6 2015 2L supercharged consumed oil (class action suit) and then catastrophic failure of the engine. So common it’s very hard to get one to replace it with. I was dedicated to maintenance. The engines are defective. I loved my Audi. I’d never get one again!
im in the market to purchase a car with this engine and every video is like "this is a bullet proof engine, as long as you replace 90% of the things that are going to fail" is it me or does that sound like reverse logic?🤷♂️
My epc light keep coming on when i boost it i had 3 auto electrical ppl look over it spent a arm and leg and no fix had engine miss in different cylinders and replaced all coils and spark plugs filter and still come on with same problem cylinder 2 for example come on with epu say cylinder miss fire but plug new coils ? Then they say tighten up engine mount nothing still come on Carbon clean ? Car just hit 99000km any help would be cool 2011 b8 s4
Hi, I see here that you had this complicated issue with the missfire, I have the same thing on cylinder 6 for an 2013 Audi Q7, spark plug replaced, New coils, carbon clean, pcv valve changed, water pump changed. How did you solve the problem ?
I experienced the cold rattle still after it was supposedly fixed, I believe they lied to avoid doing the work and making money. But to be sure what is the reason of that noise? Timing chain
I have Audi s5 2016 convertible euro 6 with only 30’00 miles so no problem yet weekend car but said lot parts updated. B8 .5 crec update engine so feel safe 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Please Help!!! I have a 2013 Audi A7 I hit a opossum last night going about 65 MPH busted my front bumper and it ripped the 3 pin connector out of my coolant pump. I purchased a new 3 pin connector each pin is numbered 1 2 3 but the wires are solid black. I have 3 wires dangling from the harness that goes to the pump the colors are solid RED, solid VIOLET, and RED with a WHITE stripe. Does anyone know what color goes to each specific pin number????? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Does it really make sense to spend 3k on timing chains as preventative maintenance? At that point I’d just buy another car and drive the Audi less lol these vehicles are not the most cost effective
I own a 2013 s5 v6 ..I’m losing coolant every 3-4 weeks is going near to minimum, also seems it burns one quart of oil every 1000 miles…i have a tiny leak on the thick silicone pipe that comes out of the radiator on the right side…any ideas what should i do..? Cant find any oil leak or coolant leak under car, didnt take the shield off yet
I am looking at A7 55 tfsi as their value dropped quite a lot. Is it worth buying or will I be working overtime just for repairs? Any info on this specifical car?
So you basically encourage people to pay tens of thousands of £ on a new S4, and then replace the £15 engine air filter every 50k miles? Well, that says alot about how british people maintain they'r cars😂😅😅
Hi Mine has a problem nobody seems to be able to fix. Engine revs to 5k then loses power and if I keep revving I get misfires and eventually engine goes into limp mode and EPC and engine lights come on and engine vibrates erratically until I switch off and back on. Any idea what's happening? Much appreciated!
@Inimbrium check the crank pulley IMO. Had faced a similar issue. The OE pulley is a two piece unit- outer part is a rubber insulation thingy, and the core contains the pulley. This 2 piece design is prone to failure with age, use and abuse. Mine failed, the belts got misaligned and started rubbing against each other.. tearing up in the process.
I need help with my A7 bad... I have antifreeze leaking from the connector that is right behind the water pump... I have antifreeze it appears in my vac line that flows to that connector.... I'm also told there is a vacuum leak ... please help me. I trust you and I'm not trying to spend a lot of money if this is a simple fix
