I traded my Superb saloon for an Octavia Estate mainly because we couldn't hand the kids bottles of water and snacks from the front seat on long drives!
Franciscoman22 How can Skoda have a better value if the engine and all the parts are made and manufactured by Volkswagen. Also to 90% the same as VW. The Irony 😂
Abdullah Chaudhry that's why it has value! It's the cheapest and offers more than sufficient attributes leading to great value for money compared to the other two. As you said it also shares components, and is one the most practical/spacious contenders. Win - win!
The conclusion was really poorly thought out. "if you want luxury you get the Audi, if you want space you should get the Skoda. VW is the best at nothing". That's viewed through the eyes of a journalist who only drives "normal cars" for 5min at a time and drive demos for free the rest of the time. Everything is a comprise. Nobody goes to buy a car to just do one thing really well.
The servicing costs on the SKODA are excellent with my local Service Centre. One of my friends had to replace one of the short, moulded rubber engine hoses in his Audi A4 and was quoted £115.00 from the Audi garage.... When he took the same part to the SKODA garage they quoted under £50.00 for the same part,... using the same OEM Part Code. I love Audi's,... but for me, badge snobbery doesn't support such a high profit margin.
A lot of the features you praised the audi for can be specced on the passat and superb too. (electric tailgate for example). Also, why not get the LED front lights for the superb? It would look so much better! :D
the audi has it stock.. like the only thing the audi had specced that i noticed, was the electronic seats(but not even the S-line ones) and the virtual cockpit..
Skoda in White or Black, LED headlights, black pack and 19 inch wheels... it looks better than the other 2 as long as it's not the poverty spec version like the one in the video
Jurgen DX, and the Audi A4 and Passat look like $200K cars as well in their best fitting specs. I mean: res.cloudinary.com/carsguide/image/upload/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto,t_cg_hero_large/v1/editorial/volkswagen-passat-206-tsi-r-line-2017-%284%29.jpg
I have driven the Laurin-Klement spec (The highest one here in Slovakia) and I was surprised how well it looked. Although I was pretty disappointed with road and wind noise. Lots of older and cheaper vehicles have better soundproofing than this top-of-the-line Superb has.
@@kalpeshshelat Yeah the passat looks not really good especially on the I want to die or sleep it's the same here shape and interior. It's probably the worst of the three inside design wise...But it's ok for older people. The picture you posted...looks like a 1.6 tdi with rims, no thanks!
@@1905tommy HI, Eric. Got it serviced a couple of weeks ago. No problems. I am really pleased with it. Loads of room (the envy of my climbing buddies in that respect) and even better when the back seats are down. I'm thinking of adding a piece of padded ply to level up the back a little for car camping. The diesel engine is nippy enough for me (I'm 67 but have always been a fan of utility vs speed). I have the green version which has an economy display histogram (optional of course to have it on) that encourages you to be a frugal driver and change up to avoid hammering your fuel. I treat it as a challenge and keep an eye on it. The car hasn't given me an ounce of worry, apart from scraping my plastic bumper on the kerbs outside my house - the car is quite low slung and the kerbs unusually high. I am quite used to the fuel-saving cut out when stopped at lights, and restarting automatically as soon as I depress the clutch. I would not hesitate to recommend this car.
miljan zbork Still delighted with it , thanks Milan. I even featured it in a ‘boot cam’ clip yesterday when I was piling my hiking gear inside its cavernous boot.
Tak1 I've recently replaced my 2014 Skoda Octavia with a new Audi A4 and can easily say there's not much the Audi is doing better than the Skoda... Skodas are great cars, comfy, spacious and great value for money. But driving an Audi is much different and I'm not talking about badge snobbery... you can feel you're driving a premium vehicle because of the design, the quality of materials, the sound insulation... it's not always all about how much money you can save. If you need a roomy, honest family car then Skoda is the best on the market. But you're looking for something a bit more special, Audi is fantastic. I have the virtual cockpit and it's just amazing. The whole car looks very modern and hi-tech, I have supple Nappa leather, real aluminium everywhere and in general quality is great.
It looks great on paper. But when you drive it you Will be reminded of the Price difference. I mean i own an audi a6. And when i drove the superb it felt cheap, noisy and awkward to drive. I would defo go for the audi a4
I went from an A6 saloon to a Superb Sportline hatchback. No regrets either. The Audi was lovely but the Superb really isn't that far behind at all anymore. It's also had fewer problems.
Skoda wins even tough: Mat didn't know a digital driver's display and lever folding rear seats were available, the car looks awesome with a better paint LED lights and bigger wheels, and the Superb was super low spec being compared to two already more expensive cars that had even more kit added separately. Bravo Skoda!
For the value, Skoda all the way, the space in that thing is absolutely incredible. One of the reasons for me to keep driving skoda. Plus, the infotainment system keeps getting better in and doesnt lack anything for me personally anymore.
TL:DR - The Passat is almost identical to the Skoda and costs about 4 gran more, If you got the money go for the Audi, it's definitely worth it, if not, the Skoda does a hell of a job for it's price.
Yes in this trim the Passat is a more clean cut and slightly more modern than the AUDI, which certainly does not fair well in red - and the AUDI will benefit visually from having larger wheels - The Passat somehow does not really need it.
All Audi cars look the same from front. Even BMW has more front variety than Audi, even with the same exclusive grill. If you remove the Audi badge, you just get a worse looking, slightly premium feeling, less practical car over a Passat. Skoda looks and feels cheap tbh. Not like a VW should. Passat is the only buyable car here. Better alternatives to Audi by BMW and MB. Cheaper alternatives to Skoda by Dacia, Suzuki, Peugeot, Hyundai.
Picked a shit spec Superb, i sell them and you need to go for SEL+. Comes standard with Full leather, xenon headlights, led drl's, nav, electric tail gate (like in the Audi) oh and handles in the boot to pop the seats down like the other 2 list goes on. Like i say a shite spec
Can you compare the A4 to the Superb. I thought the A6 and Superb share the same chassis. And I have to disagree with you on looks. I think the Superb looks far better than the Passat. PS I have a Superb. I took it for the luxury (SE L Executive). I can carry the in-laws, their lapdog, two very large dogs, a dog push chair for the lap dog. We have a tonne of room, it's very comfy for long journeys to the sea side. Curiously, I've never noticed any road or wind noise with my 2.0 DSG Superb (it's a 2018, which is the same mark)
Superb cannot ever be better than the Passat, I mean it is a nice car too, but come on, it will never ever be better than the VW, it just will not be, there needs to be some hieararchy between the models inside the VAG.
@@dusanmihajlovic4732 I think you misunderstand. I was talking about the market. Audi have the A6 and the A4, skoda the Octavia and the Superb, VW have the Passat. So what I am saying is that large exec car market is the A6 and Superb. The large family car is A4, Octavia and Passat. If you compare the interior size of the Superb and Passat, for the cost you'd be a mug to go for the Passat, it's almost the same, the gizmos maybe not the very latest, but it's all the same mechanical parts. To me comparing the Octavia and Passat is a fairer comparison especially if you want to make a brand hierarchy. As a point where do you think Seat sits?
Octavia goes with Golf. Superb goes with Passat. Phaeton has been turned down so cannot find a comparisment to it. It should have been an A8. Now you got Arteon which goes with A5 according to many but in newest model you have a Shooting Brake Arteon. Should I compare it with A4 variant?Just not. Should I compare it with A6 variant, maybe, maybe not. With Superb? No mate. What I want to say is that inside the groupation there is no rivalires between the car makers, and everyone knows their position. There could never be that an engine suplier can be worse that the one who gets their engine or to have a car that is a higher class model than what his engine or parts supplier has. What about Touareg and Kodiaq with 2.0? What about Tiguan and Karoq? What about R models? Also on the other side, cannot compare for example VW's R models with Audi's RS models... What the truth is that every car has its own costumers and it is planned to be like that. Superb is a nice car again, and I wish you many many more miles with it, cheers!
I drived the skoda superb 2016 with black color 19 inch rims look is just epic best value for money interior look good and its high quality I was amazed by car just epic...
Here in Iceland a Superb with a few extras (similar to standard passat) is only a little bit cheaper, however the A4 is much more expensive than the Passat, IMO a superb with a few extras is the best bang for the buck, but I would prefer a loaded Passat over a basic A4
@@stfu7079 he is obviously talking about the RS4 If the first comment said the 280bhp version which is the VRS The 500bhp I'd obviously going to be the RS4.
Ahmed Tha King how can you even compare a Audi rs4 with a Skoda superb. There is a 60000£ difference! It’s like comparing a Ferrari to a Dacia. Such an irrelevant comment.
I don’t know why people still call Skoda the budget brand? I know it had the reputation but today, the Kodiaq is way better and feels far more premium than the Tiguan. The Superb and Passat are so identical in terms of quality. What’s so budget about what’s basically the same thing with a different badge?
The most eye appealing to me is definately the skoda. It's beautiful in its simplicity. People complain that the new volvo's s90 makers focused on front and interior and didnt care about the rear (which in my opinion is beautiful). But Audi fanboys dont mind that everysingle new audi looks exactly the same on the outside? It like they have spent all their money on the interior and just to make it not insanely expensive they put a dull and very common audi body.
you're not gonna be seeing the outside of the car when you're driving it, which is what you'll be doing most of the time because you know.. you bought the car to drive it
0:48 _"VW has done an alright job to make sure this big-ol' box doesn't look totally mind-numbingly dull"_ Wait, I don't get it. Come again...? 1:54 _"VW has done an alright job to make sure this big-ol' box doesn't look totally mind-numbingly dull"_ OK, now I get it. Thank you! :D
i have fully loaded new Passat and i work for Audi so i drove Audi A4 alot, i also tried Superb and frankly speaking u feel why Audi cost more, materials, and how they are put together, comfort of suspension and sounds from it while driving on worse roads, i just hate those suspension sounds when Passat or Superb has bigger wheels (18"->..)
Totally unfair comparison... like Plot below said, get Superb in different colour, top trim, 18inch wheels ( From Elegance trim up) and you wouldnt look at VW or Audi. All 3 cars have the nearly identical top spec, only Skoda will save you at least 30%. I've got many years of experience with this cars and they aren't what they used to be back in 90s. PS: Audi, VW and Skoda is now practically the same company after all ;)
I remember my dad owned the 2008 or 9 superb salon and even there the leg room in the back is ridiculously big i was a kid so i could literraly strech my legs during long trips
They're not all the same. They've got the same engines and that's about all that is the same. But like Matt says. Their interior/exterior/suspension and tuning are all different...
I've gone for the Passat and not regretted , but I did get an 18 GT model which has the panny sunroof as standard etc, historical snobbery 😂says I would never get a Skoda even if it was appointed and drove like a roller ;) I know I know
I think that skoda superb in better gear is from outside nicer that vw Passat. Let's google skoda superb in laurin and klement or in sportline with 206 kw engine.
Nero CZ, let’s google the VW Passat in Arctic white, with the R-line package as well! res.cloudinary.com/carsguide/image/upload/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto,t_cg_hero_large/v1/editorial/volkswagen-passat-206-tsi-r-line-2017-%284%29.jpg
@@EqualsDeath and skoda looks waaaay more boring...it doesn t look like a sport car , it looks like a grandpa car. Passat is way more premium and faster. Skoda looks so basic...
I just bought a 2014 estate VW Passat executive tdi bmt 2.0litre diesel this week top spec, full leather, heated seats, sat nav, parking sensors etc.... One of the best cars i have ever owned!
Should've included the SEAT Leon ST as well. I honestly think the two less premium brands of the V.A.G (SKODA and SEAT) offer a better all round package and dare I say it, better styling.
Bob Sullivan The a4 is not a luxury car.. Like the C class isn't, the e series etc etc. Cloth seats are actually very durable and good for extreme weathers although nowadays technology negates that with heated and ventilated leather seats
Tbh i don't like to have a Head2Head between a premium brand and 2 uhhh how do i put it? Standard brand? Anyways, it makes the test feel unfair because of that, even if the Skoda won.
He is off on the sound measurements between the skoda and vw. They track the same on any test. IF you want to be more accurate, you have to either measure them with the same tyres, same suspensions specs (meaning both ACC or both standard, not how they are here. The skoda has ACC (adaptive) as well on the extras) and take a or b weighting measurements on two or three points in the car and take the mo. Then, do a frequency analysis to see in which frequencies each car peaks the most and how much energy those have. A more heavy on lower frequencies ride quality tires differently than a ride that isolates there and not in mids or treble frequencies. And each driver may get annoyed differently. But lower vibrations carry more energy while ears are more sensitive towards mid frequencies. But if you just want to go dead simple, they track the same with most db meters from 60 to 80 mph. Where he is right is that the audi tracks quieter in most specs. It is wrong to say that more money in the VW means better soundproofing without proof as it isn't the case. In fact for years, passats etc didn't have ANY insulation on the door panels anyway, as it wasn't necessary and foam is prone to dissolve or develop moisture. Many are just for show. He could focus on the audi having aluminum subframe in the front where vw and skoda usually get the cheapest cast frame. Which also hurts less if it is going to be replaced. Passat does have (standard?) acoustic glass windows on some cases though whereas the skoda does not, however, that also isn't automatically going to mean a quieter environment as glass surface is only one way where the car lets noise in. So subjectively he is off between the skoda/vw and on for the a4 but he is superficial as a reviewer anyway. He tries to be mass friendly and humorous to get more views...that is how he earns his living I guess. I would expect much more from motor journalists. I still wouldn't call any of them journalists unless they have a degree though...
@@evilmario6061 I didn't mean any degree. I meant a degree in journalist. As a chemist, whatever he learned is irrelevant I guess maybe excluding a thing or two relevant with tyre compounds, polymers, carbon fibre or whatever applies. I really, REALLY with there was a certified way for someone to be able to do this job. I mean, you love cars, that is why you are here. So do I, and so does he but you can't close your eyes when somebody is a hack at his job. For example he tried to compare the skoda kodiaq with the audi q5 in terms of quietness and suspension acceleration on the vertical level. And he used a phone. First of all, sound wise his phone was off. He recorded a 70db rating for the skoda and 68 db for the audi. Now, 2 db is very minor and both numbers are good, when we are talking about 70 or 90 miles per hour. Not 50 like what he did. 68 db for 50 miles per hour means that either the vehicle is not good, or the road conditions are irrelevant. Secondly the audi was on air suspension. Road surfaces and different tyres can combine to more than 4 db difference-IN THE SAME CAR! Again I am excluding the fact that he measured on his phone. I mean, it's not like a samsung or apple phone have a built in compressor that likes to bring levels up and screw with the frequencies right? Well they do but at least he used the same phone. Thirdly. What about outside noise when he measured the cars. Lastly, come on, you are talking about a 2db difference (VERY VERY minor) for cars that differ in the cost about 100% more price wise. Oh and he did found 0,1 gr difference in suspension movement (acceleration). Yeah with the phone accelerator. Companies like shock absorber manufacturers don't accept any measurement unless they take the shock off the car and test to a specific hydraulic press. He could do the test again and have different results. I know it's good that he tries to get "experienced and technical at the same time" when he wants to compare. But he can't. And he doesn't do his homework. He is the super market style review of car reviews and he is not the only one. I'd say he is even influential as many other reviewers on youtube copy him. That doesn't mean he is correct about some things. Or that he has a degree in journalism. You can tell from other things as well.
@@81giorikas What's your degree in? Most people who are big in the world of journalism didn't study journalism, and it's not even a desirable qualification for newspaper and magazine owners. Mat's style of review is more than sufficient for people who want to watch ≤10 minute reviews of cars. There's a very good reason why no-one gets as anal as you would like to with their reviews of cars. I appreciate what you're saying, but that's just not how the real world works.
naaaaaaa bruh, audi interior is weak, even weaker than the passat. ffs why can't they integrate the goddamn screen into the panel at least? other than that the vents are plastic, look very cheap, while the passat has a beautiful panel with a cool clock and a lot better door panels and seats.
I just bought a 2014 estate VW Passat executive tdi bmt 2.0litre diesel this week top spec, full leather, heated seats, sat nav, parking sensors etc.... One of the best cars i have ever owned!
I am the greatest fan of your lovely narration and presentation as well as your funny comments and wonderful British accent. However Audi, BMW, Mercedes and many other car manufacturers are not using Google maps. They use maps produced by HERE Technologies.
Thanks for the video, great as always. One inquiry, if possible, for future videos, I always see your videos but I don´t take reference about the fuel economy in mpg, could you say also in l/100. Thanks anyway.
With a couple of small kids, the additional space of the Passat or Superb is more important than the prestige/luxury of the Audi. But if you have the money and don't need the space, the Audi will put a smile on your face if you see it waiting in the parking lot. The other two are very good at taking you from A to B, but lack the fun factor.
