My father and I also bonded over a B5 S4... :'). His was an Imola sedan, which we had to sell as well. Him and I now have a project Nogaro Avant. Excellent Series, absolutely loved this episode!
The first car I fell in love with was my grandpa 1985 Audi 80. That thing was unstoppable in deep snow. After years I finally made it to get myself an Audi too. It’s completely different than my grandpa’s but there’s a connection to it. I love it
Sorry about your dad mate. It’s such a similar story to me and my dad. We couldn’t afford the s4 but we had the b5 1.8t with btcc style wheels and look.
Probably the Audi I miss the most of all the ones I have had (Quattro, TT, RS6 and R8). It was superb and when I saw it in Neckarsulm in 2000 during the Quattro 20th Anniversary, I ordered one immediately on release in the UK in Avus Silver with silver (cream) seats and Piano Black trim. It was stunning and you could tell it was an RS4 over any other A4 avant estate.
I love these father & son car stories. My father passed on June 30th and he was the first petrolhead I ever met. And I always loved the B5 RS 4. I'm glad to hear this car is interesting to drive. I looks so good and agressive even by today's standards. Too bad that listings for this car, in Brazil, are around 40k GBP.
My father also had a soft spot for these. It was his "If I'd win the lottery..." car. And I totally get that. Quite an understated look and nice performance. Oh and his modern day lottery car would be the Nissan GT-R, just for comparison :-D
I owned one of these cars in the past. It was significantly slow on the track due to severe understeer issues. The stock brakes were subpar and required replacement after 6 laps on the Nurburgring. They put proper brakes in after Audid had replaced the stock ones 4 or 5 times on warranty. The engine had to be swapped out within the first 10,000 kilometers. After it ended up in a ditch at a low speed, it needed a complete overhaul because it had literally warped. On another unfortunate occasion, I accidentally hit a cat while driving at night, resulting in a repair cost of 6,000 euros due to damage to the cheap plastic underbody. Despite these setbacks, it could have been an enjoyable daily commuter if it were more fuel-efficient. Unfortunately, it was impossible to achieve a fuel consumption of less than 20 liters per 100 kilometers.
My daily is a 2003 Allroad with the same 2.7 V6 Biturbo with a manual transmission. It's running E85 and churning out a little bit more than 300Bhp. Previous owner deleted the cats and mufflers so it sounds mean as well. Of course this thing is absolutely huge and not sporty at all but it's quick enough to make your daily commute a lot less boring. :)
doh This was emotional Awesome series about these cars. And this particular video is really special. Thanks for sharing personal stories with us dude. The video reaches another level if i may say so. Feelings and all... :)
Sadly no RS4 Avants in North America. But we did get ~1500 S4 Avants between 2001.5 and 2002. A bunch of them were unfortunately automatics and many are probably gone. But a fortunate few, such as myself, have had an Imola Yellow 6-Speed since new. It's modified mechnically with RS4 (uprated) parts or better parts (brakes and suspension).
To me, this is THE Audi of all time. It has always been my ultimate dreamcar, and that's why I own one. I made a very special video to explain my feelings about the RS4 B5: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TD7ubYyY19I.html
