The other thing that no one mentions on range is that you will not drive 175m on a charge, you will start getting warnings at about 145 miles and will probably stop at 155 ish. As you state that is not enough!

Hi Peddlers, great vid & review! I completely agree with your view that a range of 180miles will put a lot of people off. We seriously considered the original e-tron, but the test drive car showed a range of just 170 miles and we couldn’t stop thinking, £70k+ for a car that will barely do 2hrs on motorway before we’d need to stop and charge!

I'm old enough to know what a mile is (I have to, I drive a 1958 Morris Minor 1000!) and I can easily convert km into miles and vice versa. When reviewing EVs , however, it would probably be helpful for most people living outside the UK, if you could state range figures in both kilometres and miles. Other than that, your review is brilliant! - I think the battery technology in EVs still has along way to go before I'd ever consider making the switch to electric (although we may all be forced to adopt EVs, eventually). For the time being, however, I think I'll be happily relying on the 948cc's of raw internal combustion power in my Morrie to get me about town.

Where I live it was -28 degrees Fahrenheit this morning. My neighbor, who owns two Teslas, came out dressed like a Arctic explorer. He doesn't have the ability to charge at work and if he uses the heat enough for comfort he doesn't have the range to do his work roundtrip. I have a similar commute in a ICE vehicle. Just start it , turn on the heated seats and steering wheel, and drive it a few minutes and I can use all the heat I want.

Well Peter, it might be the EV to buy at the moment but I’m not yet sold on the whole idea...we are just not ready and the range on that car is hopeless...how can you pay £89,000 and yet be unable to drive more than 70/80 miles away from home so for me, my day out in Sidmouth with range anxiety taunting me all the way home. I can’t buy that. Then heating...today was -2C with a biting wind...I was on a farm this morning and my fingers were freezing whilst taking some pictures...but my faithful tDiscovery Sport welcomed me with warm heated seats, heated windscreen, a powerful heater and that luxury beyond words, a heated steering wheel...and 42mpg to help me on my way. Now the D/Sport is outlawed in a few years time BUT it does what i and everybody else wants...EV’s are a long way off that ability. The wing mirrors....a crazy idea like too many touch screens...such technology has a place but not in the act of controlling a car....manoeuvring maybe but driving, no thank you..just ridiculous and unsafe...plus mighty tempting for any passing yob to snap off for fun and replacements?...£2000 each I would guess plus paintwork! The Audi is very good.....but it needs all those improvements you describe...sort that and then we are able to think again! Stay safe...wear gloves...delay the Tesla!! 🥶🥶😨😱😱😃😃😃😃😃Richard.

Incredibly eloquent and accurate assessment of current charging infrastructure. Basically there are two segments to the market. Tesla, where if you have one of their cars you never ever have to worry about range or lack of charging, and the rest. However, for many of us we could count on one hand the number of 300 mile one day road trips were do. I charge our model 3 to circa 150 miles range once a week. That is all we need. Times are changing and our perceptions and expectations need to align with them. J

Having driven a few of these e-tron's now, I can completely agree with your view on the camera wing mirrors. Personally, I think they're a complete waste of money, and for reverse parking I found them very difficult to judge proximity to anything really. Well done for pointing it out to all your viewers, I think the idea should be dropped really, or maybe we could have a pop-up mirror just for reversing? Who knows.

The gripe I’ve got isn’t purely the range, it’s the charging time. We used to drive to the alps as a family - we used to take our 4.0 litre petrol jeep Cherokee. 20 mpg on a good day, 15mpg if you were lucky at 80 mph fully loaded with a roof box. I think on one tank aiming for an early ferry we saw 12mpg - about 200 miles brimmed to fumes. Thing is, when we came off the ferry at 10pm English time, there’s no way you want to have to spend 30-4t minutes charging the thing up - you just want to stop, squirt the go-go juice in in and pay in less than 5 minutes and head home for a pint of hogs back best and a kip. Plus this three petrol stops which accounted for 30 minutes of the journey through France - they’d add another 90-120 minutes to the journey. So to catch that ferry, we’d have missed an hour and a half of skiing in the most glorious powder. So yep, therell be an a6 all road in our barn for the road trips for years to come!

It’s not about range and never has been mate. It’s about charging speed and charging infrastructure. Range is excellent for a basic small economy petrol vehicle. Not so good for a Silver Shadow Rolls Royce, and I don’t think it matters to the purchaser of the Rolls. Same applies to heavy, luxury EVs. Range is NOT an issue and never has been. COMFORT, QUIET, SERENITY, and the plush envelopment that comes with that is what matters. Luxury car buyers (like myself - petrol, hybrid or EV) have NEVER given a TOSS about range. Just to clarify.

Great video again! Did look at the e-tron as the potential next car but as you say, with a poor infrastructure, I’m one of those nervous about the jump to EV and, for such a big SUV style car, I can’t quite see how this car works based on real world figures. ID3/4, Enyaq or Q4 style cars (if the latter can exceed 300 miles on a charge) seem to be the potential game changers (not sure about the build quality on the latest VWs though). E-tron GT looks interesting, but too pricey (although I heard a rumour about a mini e-tron GT, the GTS? Allegedly an S5 style offering which’d be very interesting indeed and possibly could coax me out of the S4). Here’s hoping for a change of pace in EV development from the mainstream manufacturers as you say in your video. Well done again, a good honest review!

I do around 25,000 miles a year, a mix between local travel and regular 250-300 miles a day longer journeys. I'll be interested to see your 1,000 miles in 3 weeks (a little less that I do) review and whether you charged at home - which is essential for most EV users (IMO). I'm just about to order my first EV. I've come to the conclusion that a) you need to be able to charge at home, b) charging frequently and for short periods, staying within the rapid charge curve of the car (for which the E-Tron is excellent) is the most time efficient C) planning your journeys to make use of the rapid chargers D) I never travel long distances without stopping a couple of times and I could easily be charging while doing that. This obsession with 300+ miles range is not, in my opinion, realistic, nor essential for me. The business case for going electric is significant, at the moment, and that is partly why I am doing it... and it will be a challenge and an adventure, something that, perhaps is needed, on those long motorway trips. The cost benefits will change soon enough with road pricing or whatever form the government takes to recover the £27b in taxes they get from ICE cars but while I can, I plan to take advantage of it.

@@PetrolPed Thanks. IMO, part of the difference is related to the circumstances surrounding having use of the car. You have one on loan. I am planning to lease on the company (either an Etron or a Tesla). In the process, I will be getting a home charger, I have travelled my most common long distance trips as part of my work, stopped at every services, checked the charge points, looked at the numbers, identified the rapid chargers (as they are an important element), looked at how much time I spent stopped in an ICE car during normal trip, checked out hotels where I can charge overnight. In other words, I've done my research, I know what to expect and whether it will work, or not. And it does. It wasn't a complicated process, not time consuming, just a bit of fun with a useful outcome. There aren't many compromises and some financial benefits to running an EV, hence the impending order. I'm not sure that having a car on loan for three weeks, with no home charger and little/no forethought to planning is the way that most people will look into EV ownership (a comment not a criticism). For many, who do a commute and some 100 mile trips, they may not need charging away from home. If you can charge at home, the EV. whatever size. shape or price, is an interesting choice. For people like myself, and presumably yourself, with trips away, longer drives and overnight stays, planning is more important but really not that difficult. Looking forward to your review of the car itself, as a 55 Etron is my preference. Great videos by the way, the most "real" reviews I find on the web.

Even though the UK produces a significant amount of electric from wind and solar, it's not all about CO2, reducing air pollution is vital. Ive had my e tron 55 for 1.5 years now, fully specced with normal side mirrors. Truely great car. I drive in norway where it can get very cold and usually lots of snow. It just digs through everything. Nightvision and matrix leds are so good when driving in very dark areas, and i have never had range anxiety. We are very fortunate with charging infrastructure here in Norway. There are free public chargers everywhere, so even if you dont have a home charger you can get a full charge in ~8 hours. The 150kw+ network is also very good, no matter where you drive, there will be fast chargers. Ice cars are completely priced out here too, cars usually cost 2-3 times more here than anywhere else. So ev ownership is a no-brainer

God forbid, I'm not an Audi fan, far less a German car fan.... So for me to see this as a car I actually quite like is an achievement in itself. My experience with my PHEV with battery range is exactly that. What in the summer is a 40 mile range achieving maybe 32 miles drops to 20 miles in winter which gets you about 15 miles true range. And this is the issue with cold weather and battery technology. I would consider a full electric for my next company car however, range has to increase dramatically given I would normally drive 35k a year. I think you were very diplomatic about the charging infrastructure in this country Pete, I've heard horror stories especially about the motorway charging issues, I believe they are run by Ecotricity and by all accounts are at times pretty grim. You are right about the e-tron range though, who on earth would spend over 80k on a car with a range of 185 miles, it doesn't make sense when you can buy a Tesla for much less with a 100 mile longer range. I'm afraid I won't even consider an EV for at least another three years.

Great review of a car I could not live with at all. The range is completely inadequate. The range during our 6 months of winter would be even worse, and that is not counting the drag from plowing through snow, nor the electrical draw for lights, heaters, seat heater, and wipers needed in a snow storm. In an average year we see a few nights of -40. Your +2 is what we consider a warm winter day.

Great presentation Pete. Having had wing mirrors knocked off in the past, I wondered how deep my pockets would have to be to replace a camera unit vs a piece of glass. Hmmm. I think that battery technology and range will be akin to what we saw with the evolution of the petrol engine... albeit over a shorter period of time.

Those camera stalks seem even more tempting to knock off than standard mirrors. I'm not a yob & would never damage someone's car but they just look so 'grabbable'.

‘Weighs about the same as a small moon’ 😂. Great comment. Understand your disappointment with the range. The U.K. weather certainly makes a difference. Most Petrol cars have a range of 300 miles now, that may be why people expect that from an electric car. Fascinating review though. We do wish MINI would build a fully electric Countryman or Clubman

We are picking up our new car in March. We had numerous discussions as to whether we should go electric. As you say, most of the time we’d be driving to the shops etc but you couldn’t get around the fact that you can’t just jump in the car and head to Scotland without spending 4/5 hours on chargers. That’s almost the same time you’d spend actually driving! There’s also the fact that you are paying a premium on the EV. You get much more car for £30000 when you choose petrol. Needless to say we’re buying another petrol car.

Hi Ped Excellent review. As an Audi man love lots about this car, exterior, interior, dash & screens great improvement, not keen on the wheel design (minor personal preference). Cameras to replace wing mirrors definite No No, big distraction and possibly dangerous😬😬 Range, infrastructure, and cost big negative. Guess we are on same wavelength wit this one. Good to see the Pups being sensible🥰

You’re spot on. 185 miles is way too low for a car of that value. It’s a good looking machine although touch screens aren’t my thing, it does at least look so much better than a Tesla (subjective, of course). But half the range of what is actually needed. And my biggest gripe with screens and cameras and not, mirrors is focal length. Try using them whilst wearing bifocals and crane your neck back in order to view them properly... How safe is that!?

What a shame about the rear view cameras. I really want them to catch on but what you say about lack of depth of field and the inability to see more if you move your head might put people off. Another great review. The only thing I struggle with is the need for such big range from BEV’s? To achieve these ranges they will need batteries that are huge therefore heavy and extraordinary expensive, putting these cars further out of reach in monitory terms. As a man of a certain age my bladder determines my drive time in the car, with careful consideration I can tie this in with a charge stop therefore the perceived lack of range is not perhaps the issue we think it is.
@theferrari458Italia

I fully agree, Cars that size should be doing over 300 miles on a charge. I am a big Audi fan but it is so disappointing that the major car manufacturers cannot get close to Tesla when it comes to range. I will not waste my money on an electric car until they can sort their range out.

£89 grand! Where's the market for that? Having to plan a UK holiday round several hours sat at charging points (or queuing for one) doesn't work. A problem that will be getting worse as more people move over to them.

Get those mirrors broken off and you’ll need a mortgage to replace one 😂 And come 2030 there will be still millions of ICE cars out there and the second hand car market will be booming. Don’t forget that the government will want their pound of flesh once people convert to EV. Pay per mile could be just the start of clawing back lost revenue and people’s electricity bills will be far dearer as you’d need to charge your car every night if not most nights. EV ownership won’t be as cheap as one would think in my humble opinion.

People will no longer 'own' a car after 2030. You will end up paying per mile anyhow and motoring will change. Volkswagen reckons their 'private owned sales after 2030 will be zero and the new cars they make will have that in mind. One thing is for sure: 'Paying you shall!'
@robertolombardi3698
@robertolombardi3698 3 года назад
@@guylambrechts2303 won’t bother me as I’ll always own my own car outright and it won’t be electric either, they’ll be plenty of ICE cars out there. EV won’t suit everybody that’s for sure and it’ll take a lot longer for the infrastructure to get set up, you’ll still need millions of charging points installed in private residential car parks, apartment complexes, workplaces and busy high roads and that’s besides dedicated car charging stations.

Was going to make a sensible comment about the special coating that is supposed to be on those mirror cameras, and how the industrial cleaning agents and multi-dropped mitts & cloths used during the average roadside carwash most eTrons will visit will remove said coating within 2 visits... But then realised nobody has made the gag about Audi drivers and their mirror usage...!!! 😁

Love the video, for me 300 miles is what I want, I could live with 250 miles at a push but the infrastructure for chargers need to be a lot better and until it is I will not change. hopefully within the next 2-3 years it will get a lot better and with newer tech on batteries maybe 300+ miles will be achievable.

Thanks for the video, very honest and realistic. I'm a great fan of electric and hybrid vehicles and am considering all electric. Skoda Enyaq, VW ID4 are both strong contenders. I did test drive the Peugeot e2008 which was a good car to drive but the range was hugely disappointing. The range has to be 250 miles plus to make sense for me. I'm sure the technology is coming... :)

Hi Ped, another quality car from Audi, the range is not great, maybe ok for short trips around town but not ideal for longer journeys as the charging can take time to recharge. Unfortunately, still more work required to fine tune the mileage. This Mirror technology sounds expensive compared to the traditional mirrors.
@johncanalese588
@johncanalese588 3 года назад
Simply cannot understand the shear amount of speculative negative comments about the virtual mirrors. If you can afford this car and you don’t like the virtual mirrors then don’t buy them! Audi gives you that choice and virtual mirrors are an extra cost option. Personally, I have an e-tron Sportback with virtual mirrors and I have found them no where near as problematic as the original poster makes out and I have been driving cars for 40 years. Never had problems with the camera lens getting dirty to the point that vision is impaired and the image is clear and sharp even at night. I’m in Australia so maybe that has something to do with it.

With the mirror, i think it's range rovers who did a concept car that used not only the normal side camera but the rear camera which gave a much better view, a wider angle.

Instinctively I thought the mirror cameras looked like a bad idea. I'm glad you have called it out. I feel at the moment we are in a phase with new cars where manufacturers can do some really clever tech. However just, because you can do it doesn't mean to say you should. The touch screens are getting a bit much and the latest Golf for example with touch sensitive steering wheel controls are just silly.

They fit fancy camera mirrors to aid the aerodynamics, but still shape the front end like a Brick. I really hate the large bulky Flat front ends on modern cars, it just makes them all look the same. Bring back 90's cars !.

I'd be interested in seeing you take a road trip where you add ballast to the car to simulate the weight of a family with luggage. What would another 200 kilos or so do to the range? I live in rural Colorado and the limited range of today's EVs coupled with the lack of charging infrastructure is the biggest factor keeping me away at the moment.
