@@Norwoodg00ner well they couldn't ot was too heavy, complex, expensive and big it baree even fit in the q7 which is a 7 seater suv let alone a 2 door coupe
I'm not a fan of the Q7 but, I must admit, there is something about this car that represents Audi/VAG at it's peak. The OTT craziness of the engineering in their cars of the 2000s was just on another level. They had SO MANY fascinating engines during that period. Narrow angle V5s and V6s, inline 5s, supercharged V6s, turbo and NA V8s, W12s and of course turbo diesels in everything from 4cyl through to 12cyl via V8 and V10. We will never see that kind of diversity in ICE again!
And they also had w16 in a veyron and w8 in passat. The over-engineered phaeton, or bi-turbo v12 fitted into station wagon rs6. Definitely good days for the vag
@@macieksz2829 The RS6 was a V10 biturbo, but yeah, their whole model lineup was incredibly diverse and complex, and unmistakeably German through and through. Good times.
Well they wanted to put this engine in the r8 at one point and to me it's still a lost opportunity... a diesel supercar is not something you see everyday...
I was in my Mondeo ST220 travelling up the motorway once, heading up a hill doing about 120kph-ish, this V12 Q7 roars past me as if I was standing still, towing a 10 metre boat. I just looked in disbelief that this was a thing
Audi did that for three reasons. The first and most important is because they can. The second reason is so they could use it in certain motorsports by calling it a factory available engine. The third was to have a faster SUV that still pulled off decent mileage.
@@Zenithialord I sure do. How many SUV's making in the ballpark of the 493HP it was rated at achieve 23mpg? I don't know of any SUV's of that size making that kind of hp that are getting mileage like that especially in that time frame.
@@peteparker6879 I wish they had, I can just imagine seeing a Gallardo Rolling Coal in some intersection in Dubai. However they did make a Prototype R8 with this engine.
Mubble Mann diesels aren't a rev happy motor, it can't rev to 7. The max it will go up to is 4.5k-5k rpm and that's the reason why diesels have a lot of small gears, we have a GL350 bluetec and it's very easy and effortless to drive with the diesels big torque, light steering wheel and all of the luxuries Mercedes-Benz has to offer. 😊
You don't buy a Diesel in SUV to "save money". You buy it for low end torque because it suits SUV driving style. With an engine like this Audi, you can haul whatever and you won't have any problems. It's the same philosophy as with Cummins and Duramax. They are not for saving money, they are for hauling stuff. If you want an economical Diesel, buy a Volkswagen Passat, or some Citroën...
You are wrong, your hauling abilities are not constrained by engine torque, but by tyre type/size. If you want to haul stuff, buy a truck, because that audi is not gonna work on loose/muddy surface at all. If you want wheel torque, Soviet Uaз (80hp bus) with great reduction gearbox or Kamaз (60 hp truck used everywhere in postsoviet countries) truck have probably more than this useless Audi
Without Torque, you need very Low Gearing as to not destroy the engine. Low Torque engines can be used to haul stuff but it's not very practical because most of the time it's going to be significantly slower and they may even use more fuel than more torque engine. Right tires are also good but not essential because if it's a heavy load, it will press down on suspension and tires and create more grip that way. Tires are not essential, but it's a lot safer to use the right tyres. A truck is much more versatile than that Audi, that is for sure, but you don't need a truck to haul things for 100 km on a highway and a few dozen meters on gravel. For work, Truck is much better, but if you are on a family vacation and you want to take a boat with you, that Audi will be a better choice because it is more practical for that use. No one at a right mind would use this Audi as a replacement for F-250, but most people don't need a Truck that size- In Europe, roads are narrow and winding so that Audi is much more practical than a Pickup. Quattro AWD is not as good for heavy duty use as something with propper 4X4, but for things, it would be used for, that Quattro is just fine and 4X4 would be redundant, cause no one at a right mind would take that Audi somewhere where that makes a big difference. For its purpose that Audi is very well made.
Edim 108 true but nobody in europe (with our fuel prices ) will buy this car, most people here use the q7 3.0 v6 tdi with 200+ hp ( from 204 hp to 280) and in some cases you can see the 4.2 v8 tdi 340hp wich can tow an small boat without any problem, Audi made this car to flex a q7 with a v12 diesel I guess , it will be dope to see one tho I see lot of q7’s of that generation here in spain and the father of my friend has this car with the v6 engine, and it’s surprising how those 3 liters can pull Not just in this model , but in the a6, a7, a8 is the most common engine too, the 3000cc v6 tdi is prolly the best engine audi has made , no need for a big v8 or a fucking v12 hahaha
CalikL Or maybe he realized it's just VAG trash and that even Opel is better than a rebaged VW. He's older and he has more experience, maybe you should consider why he'd make that change from a vehicle your fanboy ass thinks is superior.
Just cause u have money it dont mean you have to be reckless with spending. It's nice to have a lower fuel consumption in a car. So tired of these damn petrol elitists tbh.
@@FarmYardGaming who said they weren't? Still though, unless you're literally sitting on tens of millions of dollars some restraint is smart. And besides that, on many many car threads there are always people going about saying how diesel is bad etc. I'm just tired of it. Both petrol and diesel has its pros and cons!
@@LGinux *Stares in Jeff Bezos* Nah, I'm kidding there, but I haven't got much of an issue with Diesel, you're right. Both have strengths and weaknesses.

Nah they are all downsizing now and it sucks, used to get the 6.2 V8 in Mercedes C63 and E63, now its all 3.0 V6 engines in most of these cars soon it will get even worse. Its government regulations preventing them from doing it.
@@surena9451 You heard correct, its a 2.0 4 pot hybrid that also weighs 2.1 tonnes, over 400kg more than the old one. Weighs the same as a V12 S600 from the early 2000s too and that car had everything imagineable.
Breaking Cycles only problem is its an ugly car, it really was very poor styling. The new Q7 has much better proportions, not as vulgar and tacky looking like the old one which are bought my herberts who get high mileage examples about ten years old, then cant afford to have them fixed when a sensor or something goes faulty haha chavs pretending they have money LOL
Except that my '10 Sport Supercharged hasn't had a single issue in over half a year of daily driving, it's faster than the Q7, and the interior is so much nicer.
I know it's the way I roll my friend .. always offering to be a good Samaritan in the time of need of a stranger ... p.s stop looking at this beast of a vw toureg you can't afford it so stop pretending pal .
They were going to do that with the R8, as an homage to their LMP1 cars from the 2000's, until they couldn't be bothered to modify the chassis enough to fit that giant coal roller. So they just took the Lambo V10 instead.
Alot of us here are like they should have did it but the truth is even tho the tag of "budget super" was placed on it..only the rich could seriously buy one and petrol consumption would be the last thing on their minds when deciding to buy a supercar. It certainly wouldn't make any sense purchasing an r8 new without the beautiful sound of the na v10
People say overkill for a diesel, but 493hp/738ft/ lbs. and 21-25mpg Name one diesel (or anything for that matter) that meets those numbers. Duramax, Powerstroke, Cummings, etc. close on specs (albeit less torque), 8-12mpg at best...
@Alex Lol you say to him that he is poor and when you realize he is not you play the "i dont care" card.... You are pethetic dude, you are all over this comment section, get a life mate.... No everyone loves BMW, Audi or Mercedes so quit calling people poor.
@Alex Ive red pretty much every single comment of yours, and i can tell that you not open minded at all. And yes you can love something you cant afford, i love Pagani and Koenigsegg and i cant afford them, thats just your stupid, ignorant mentality and lack of culture that makes you think like that. Ugly audi? Shut the hell up, Jezza. You often just miss it. It's the best looking Q7 so far and the 12 cylinder diesel was made to just prove that Audi can do it and make insane torque numbers. Not just about saving fuel.
Whoevers waching this in 2018 this is amazing seeing how everyone gets hyped about the 707 hp the jeep trackhawk and thinks its amazing engenering and yet this car had 30 more horses wich was built in 2009 is absolutely amazing and is around the same price
Shona I bet that for less than 10K € in tuning the 6.0 V12 TDI engine would make almost twice the power than stock and almost twice the torque of the trackhawk. All of this while not averaging at 15mpg lmao
The only thing that is ugly is your face Jeremy not that SUV. That is one SUV I would love to have. I would not like to be to technician who works on it though, lol.
Actually the whole point of buying a diesel is to tow things. The 6.7 liter Powerstroke V8 in an F-450 make 440hp and 925 lbs ft of torque. It was not designed to be economical. It was designed to tow over 30,000lbs.
That isn't true at all. The point of a diesel is one thing. Fuel mileage. You can easily build gas engines to pull just as well as any diesel, just not with decent mileage. People have this thought as well that diesels naturally make more torque and it just isn't true. This one at hand produces (yet limited to) 1000NM/738FT LBS of torque at 38psi. The current Power Stroke if I recall makes those numbers at 30psi. You could easily build a 6.7L gas engine that makes 925FT LBS of torque at around 20psi. Bentley has a 6.75L V8 that makes 811 Tq at 20psi with ancient technology and compression ratio that is from the 80's.
Michael King um wrong, maybe in Europe a diesel is supposed to get better fuel mileage. In America, all Diesel engine are made to do is tow many tons. Fuel mileage is just a bi product because diesel takes longer to burn
@@derbyjr actually, he is right, yoz can make it with a gas engine as well, physics do not change when you cross the ocean.. a diesel has a high comptession rate, thats were the low torque comes from and additionally, diesel has a higher density, so a gallon of diesel is more mass than a gallon of gas, just like different types of wood burn at different rates so( a pile of pine will not last as long as a pile of oak, if the same size).. if you try to build a low torque gas engine you get in the low 1 digit mpg.. so, it's just more economic
No, wrong on your part. If you think the manufactures can't build a gas engine to haul big loads you'd be out of your mind. They just can't do it with reasonable fuel mileage. Even the Ford V10 is rated for 30,000lb and it is very weak in power for it's size. To build a gas powered engine to haul 80,000 lbs like a big rig wouldn't be that hard with today's technology. To build one that does it with decent fuel economy however just isn't going to happen. The 8.1L was poorly built and had no problem towing as well as the Duramax at that time. The Duramax just did it with roughly double the fuel economy.
If you could afford that car.. Saving money with diesel isn't really your objective. You're just looking for a monster of a car(more torque) and that's it
@@kerimca98 I just like the idea of a diesel super car, maybe those cars you mentioned might beat a diesel powered R8 on pure pace, but for fuel efficiency, it would definitely come out on top.
Nah these have aged horribly and even on the inside are very basic. Like many Audi's actually. I'd say the BMW F85 X5 M is probably the best looking of recent times.
I recently saw one driving along Coming up on it it's just unassuming, ohh just another audi suv But when I got close enough to see the v12 badge I became a giggling fangirl These things are just insane
Just a few years ago they were building 4.0L V8 Diesel engines for the SQ7…still can’t be compared to the OG V12 but they were so unique and good to see in an era where Petrol rules
My boss has a 2011 3.0 V6 one. Tells everyone it's a V12, even has a "6.0" badge on the tailgate lol. Yea buddy, you got the V12 version, even though it's a gasoline engine and it has the 8 speed automatic.
Torque combined with revs produce power. Lots of Low end torque means lots of low end power and power couse acceleration. Power goes to gearbox etc and into wheels and it generate wheel torque which pushes car forward because a = F/m
@@andrew19682008 my apologies. I turns out that the Audi CVT transmissions are good from what I heard. It is the Lexus and toyota CVT that are the trash ones. Sorry bout that mate. My mistake
Shame it has the dynamic prowess of a blamange and boring styling, but then - it’s just ANOTHER SUV, regardless of what engine’s in it, these cars simply aren’t exciting.
The engine has 1000nm torque. And this is electronicaly limited, because the gearbox couldn´t handle more. The v12 is capable of producuing around 1200 nm of torque.
I own one. Still don’t understand why i did this. One of the most pointless car ever. I bought a 10k€ exhaust system and it still sounds quiet and bad. My 0-100 best time is 6.4sec. Transmission can’t eat this engine. You can’t tune it safely and reliably. 4.2 diesel have the same acceleration, much less fuel consumption, better exhaust sound and with stage 1 it accelerate faster, and transmission easily handle this tuning. My lincoln town car is more comfortable and soft than q7, my turbo cayenne is much faster than q7 w12. Only 2 things i like about this car: breaks, they are incredible, and handling, it handles as good as cayenne. Thats all
Well, whats the big deal, in the end after few years everyone knew its a crap, mercedes made 4.0 vi biturbo diesel with almost 900NM which was economic and longlasting, nobody want v12 because its pointless
Jeremy is very good, but mostly he’s dealing with these cars brand new. This pig of a thing will give trouble long before it should. A Toyota will be shaking its grill in disgust as vag technic do a u tube video on the 7 timing chains that have failed due to crumbling plastic guides or a miriad of other flaws created by German pests ( I mean engineers) Shame really. But it’s something silly people desire and buy. A folly at best.
