The 2017 Season of European Hillclimbing made possible to see quite a unique rivalry, for the first time it was possible to see head-to-head a Group B based Audi Quattro S1 against a modern based Audi S1 quattro.
Nikoly Zlatkov on the 770Hp 5 cylinder ProSpeed Monster againt the TFSi 4 cylinder engined 600Hp Audi of Peter Ramler, all this at St. Agatha HillClimb in Austria.

+Aridane Alamo Dude,i was talking about hillclimb,not rally.And besides,the cars like Gabat's Cosworth(2008. version with 830 horsepower),Hans Schori's procharged 800 horsepower Lancer Evo 6,Mike Jelinek's Impreza,Felix Pailer's Delta Integrale,Karl Schagerl's Golf 2,Georg Plasa's BMW e36 and 134 Judd and Reto Meisel's Mercedes 190 Judd are some of most legendary hillclimb cars.

+Malc180s Results of the race say otherwise.Schagerl's Golf 2 got ahead of both.It's Europe's fastest 4wd car and one of fastest hillclimb cars in general.Trust me,i've seen that thing in action.On this particular race,it went 3.7 seconds faster than Zlatkov's S1.That says enough.

a feminine looking hatchback is supposed to be the recreation of a legendary monster which looks and sounds intimidating when it's driving? the road version S1 doesn't even have more horsepower than the old road version sport quattro. that's just lame. if BMW made a recreation of the 860i using the i3 chassis powered by a 3cylinder engine that wouldn't count as a recreation of anything in my bookr. you just can't use a feminine looking hatchback that's driven mostly by people who give no f***s about going fast or rallying and use it to build a recreation of a group B monster. I've never even seen the road version of the S1 here in germany which sais a lot, if you see that model at all it has an economy engine in it. can't tell me a legit recreation wouldn't sell, there's a sport quattro in my neighbourhood and every enthusiast admires that one.

+jonny j I'm not comparing the MX5 to the ur quattro at all, I'm simply pointing out that just because a car is "feminine" doesn't mean its a poor car, some of them are fun to drive, I just used the Mazda as an example of a "girly" car. fyi, the quattro is the reason I became a petrolhead, when I was a kid my dad's buddy had a short wheel base version, he took us for a drive in it which terrified me, since then I was hooked.

I see what you're saying. But the MX5 is a good car because it is a small (agile) lightweight RWD car. and if Mazda called the MX5 a recreation of the 787B then I would call bullshit on that too. just like a lotus or old racecars, if you have a driving machine then looks don't matter at all. however this S1 is probably frontwheeldrive, it's not light either and I bet it has very little in common with a drivers car. I see really shitty cars selling well because they look good, but they have built a recreation of a legend here which has nothing in common with the legend and they couldn't even do as little as making it look good. so I'm never going to like it.

アマ Get off your hogh horse and enjoy the damn cars. Who cares if the S1 Quattro looks "feminine"? It's a pretty damn impressive machine and kept up well with the Group B legend just fine. Looked quicker on one of the runs even. But just because it shares its name with an automotive icon, you're going to let your panties get twisted into a knot? Wow. OK. You know, I felt the same way about the Dodge Charger when it came back out not too long ago. Got a 5-door sedan with some lines from the late-'60s models and a V6/auto standard. Was really pissed until I realized that the economy models don't define the car (Although they do give it a bad reputation. The Challenger, Camaro and Mustang all suffer from this problem.) and, with some tuning and a little elbow grease, can kick some serious ass. No, it isn't the bland, overpriced coupé that took the rally scene by storm, but it's still impressive to see during a hillclimb. Just look past the bs and enjoy the cars.

It does! Modern cars look like toys for kids, for sizzies.. That group B Quattro is a beast, a totally fascinating and somewhat scary car. They don't make 'em like that anymore, those plastic computerboxes on wheels with their screaming little computerengines and all sorts of driver-aids that they call contemporary cars..

Mastur Binho the new one will sound better because of the amazing gearbox whining and if there would be a 5 cylinder it would sound very similar. If you put an exhaust on a 2.2 it sounds similar to a 2.5 with identical exhaust, the new ones on street sound different because of all the stuff in the exhaust ( catalytic converters and particle filters)

Immer wieder gänsehaut bei diesem traum von s1 urquattro. Auch der aktuelle s1 kann sich sehen lassen und muss sich auf keinen fall verstecken. Es ist immer wieder ein stück wunderbarer Geschichte und mit vielen wunderschönen Erinnerungen aus der Kindheit. Ich wünsche mir von Herzen dieses wunderschöne Stück Geschichte noch viele Jahre bewundern zu dürfen. Ein hoch auf Audi, und Audi Tradition.

I just like everything with an engine and wheels. They're both fantastic in their own way, that 5-cylinder sound is awesome but the way the new one stays super flat in the corners is really cool to see as well.

Back in the 80s those Group B cars were bat-shit crazy & fast ... 35 years on, they still are ! And they sound a hundred times better :) Of course the newer car is technical superior in every-way, but nobody is going to be impressed 35 years from now.

You do realize that the Group B cars were quickly outclassed by WRC cars in the 90s? Everyone stans for these cars and acts like they're invincible, but records set by Group B cars, which were thought to be unbeatable, were quickly knocked down by 90s WRC cars.

@@thejay8963 That's comparing apples to peaches; sure more modern WRC cars were faster, due to better braking and handling, but not in shear speed. They also changed up the rallies themselves, shorter & lesser stages, less night stages and most importantly, no more public on the road. Modern WRC cars are better, but not bat-shit crazy like the Group B cars or rallye-stages themselves.

Dawwwg Online Yeah, they are, you fanboys just act like that isn’t the case. And does the extra madness matter? Why are Group B cars so much better because of their power? Rallies aren’t supposed to have big straightaways, so the power is completely useless to actually attaining good times, especially since the Group B era-AWD cars were clumsy over smooth, solid surfaces compared to even 90’s machines. The later machines used their 300+HP much better. The only reason these cars are treated like gods is because of how loud they are. And frankly, that’s a _bad_ thing, considering that all of the sound is energy wasted that could be moving the car. And how are these any more exciting than the WRC Celica, or the Polo WRC? They sound better and look cooler, but they’re pretty fuckin’ slow in an actual time trial. So really, I’m comparing Apples to old apples. Edit: how is having people getting onto the track a good thing? How are long, tiring races that put the drivers at a greater risk of fucking up better? How is more stages set in low visibility conditions, _also_ increasing the chance of drivers screwing up, memorable?

Hold on ...that old S1 was packing 680bhp ...but if you don't remember they stopped group B for a reason ...too much horsepower , too many accidents . So the new model couldn't possibly compare to that beast to start with ... The engineers since then are fighting with high standards , crash tests, safety, aerodynamics , braking systems , and as low consumption as possible with as high as possible efficiency ...etc etc . In other words those old beasts cannot be compared with a "smarter" vehicle from the future in any way .

C'est typique avec les voitures modernes, elles paraissent moins impressionnantes, mais elles sont plus efficaces. Cependant, il faut noter que la nouvelle S1 était encore en phase de tests et pas à pleine puissance.

The old cars are more interesting to watch and to listen to. And yeah, require more skill. But a better racing car is a faster one. Suspension and aerodynamics are not even comparable on those two. Not to mention, the new S1 is mid-engined, so it also has a much better weight distribution. The new S1 is better, but the old S1 is the one that gives goosebumps.

Modern cars will never recreate oldschool ones just because of regulations alone, not to mention skill and talent is very very VERY rare novadays in the automotive industry. Everyone is making competitors to other cars, instead of making something new, refreshing, unique.

To the second part: They obviously have similar talent and skill as back in the day, But the market changed a lot. They dont want to design and engineer a unique car just to see it fail in terms of sales. They cant/dont want to afford those high risk projects. The markets are overloaded, they can fall out of it pretty quickly if they have a couple cars people dont buy. ( see Mitsubishi e.g. ) P.S: I love old cars and dont like the ones after 2000, but objectively the old ones are way worse. Its just the machine-man relation and the simplicity that makes the old cars irreplaceable in our hearts.

@@waifuracer6516 The Group B track records were destroyed in the 90s by regular WRC cars. People thought those times were unbeatable, but group B cars turned out to be fat, unaerodynamic pigs compared to later WRC cars. and no matter how much you whine and scream like a child about it, a modern WRC car would Thanos snap a Group B car in a proper time trial.

Without the Success of the Old there’d be no New. Marvellous to see the little A1 ripping like that. But I can’t but to love the sound and nostalgia of the Old Quattro. After all when I was a Nipper that was the Dogs Bollocks .

I would have to agree with most of the comments here. WRC cars are crazy in their own right. But those Group B cars...you can just hear and feel the raw power those things make. Both (to me) are exciting to watch, each in their own regard. And all these drivers are absolutely crazy to get behind the wheel of either one.

You might get to where you're going faster in the newer one, but you'll enjoy the trip that much more with that symfony of cylinders from the magical inline 5. I'd even take a detour, there's no place I'd rather be than in an Audi S1.

The older one looks like crap for me, I don't like that kind of sound, and doesn't is as fast as the modern cars, and that means that it doesn't puts drivers' brain at enormous stress as the moderns do when actually competing: car-controlling is a sixth sense; racing is not (modern racing is more about reflexes/reaction/precision/etc. than car-controlling, while older racing was 50-50 or something like that. They're both hard; they're just different). But, hey, it's all about subjectivity.
