Just a quick real time video of changing the thermostat. I know it's a bit drastic to remove the slam panel for access, but that's to make it easier for you to see. Any questions feel free to ask, the 180 variants are very similar with just a bit more to move out of the way from under the inlet manifold.

Great video. Very helpful. Just some considerations... I replaced mine yesterday. It took me 3 hours. I didn't have any major problem. I did it with the car road ready. The access to the screw holding the lower part of the thermostat housing is very difficult. Also to remove the alternator cable holding screw. I would advise having tool with magnetic properties. The probability of screws falling in to the engine compartment is very big. It happened to me. Also the oil plastic pipe was already broken, but it was not visible before starting taking things apart and as I pulled it out it broke in pieces. So just have one ready if yours was never changed. Not impossible, but not easy task. Arrange for the right tool before starting and have agile fingers. Good luck.

Excellent guide, job was completed and using the wobble head/ hinged extension to remove the thermostat housing 10mm bolts, I’ll see if I’ve seated the O-ring correctly, my only concern, very helpful BWS.

This video saved me $280. Couldn't get the wobble socket to work. Used a crazy screwdriver/socket/adapter combination to get the bottom screw from the housing. Can be done though. Thanks for the video.

can you help me understand the direction of coolant flow through these engines, is it: cooled water in through thermostat opening and hot out via coolant flange at side of head? or the other way round? - thanks
@nicolaspiper3437
@nicolaspiper3437 2 года назад
This looks way easier on video when you have the whole front end off, I tried this without taking the radiator and fans off and damn is it hard, way too tight to fit my hands. I initially wanted to comment that you must have small hands (or maybe I have larger hands?), but in any case the bottom bolt on the thermostat housing was extremely difficult to get to, even just to put on the socket to tighten/loosen it! Marco Cadima also brought up a good point, the alternator cable holding screw was very hard to get off/on. On to other fixes on my tt now, water pump, timing belt, friction plate and clutch slave cylinder, wish me luck! Cheers!

Great Video Brian, did mine last night and only took a couple of hours. Quick question, how tight should the bolts be done up on the thermostat, the bottom a lot harder to tighten the top one?
@BWSTT
@BWSTT 4 года назад
Not massively tight, there's no way of getting a torque wrench in there, but just get them reassuringly tight. It's only an m7 thread so 10-12nm is probably about all they need

PLEASE HELP! I was considering using a lower radiator hose heater because it is very cold where i live. My question is, Does the thermostat go between the lower radiator hose and the block? (is it located on the suction side or hot side?) im told saturn and audi are known for suction side thermostats that will prevent the flow of a lower hose heater.
@whiteout6993
@whiteout6993 6 лет назад
I was able to answer my own question, i see that my lower radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing. So to my luck, i wont be able to use a lower radiator hose heater
@davidatkinson7234

@@whiteout6993 so does this mean the coolant flow around this engine is cooled water in through the thermostat opening and hot water out via the coolant flange at side of the head?

I’ve done this before but can’t remember fully. My car has just had its coolant redone as I had a leak, now the leak has been sorted the thermostat has gone (normal), could I get away with just taking the hose off, replacing the thermostat and the housing with an aluminium one without draining the whole system? Can I just top up any fluids that do leak out while changing? Cheers.

Aaron Noel that's basically a cambelt off job, I have yet to do a guide for the cambelt, and it's a lot to write up on here
@noelsdesign
@noelsdesign 7 лет назад
BWS TT does that mean it's to much for a diy job?
@BWSTT
@BWSTT 7 лет назад
Aaron Noel that depends on your level of ability really, it's just to do the belt the cambelt has to come off, so makes no sense not to do it all at once.
@noelsdesign
@noelsdesign 7 лет назад
BWS TT My ability level is not to bad really, I just changed my gearbox and clutch on a Renault traffic van. I'm not familiar with the audi so I thought I'd ask someone who is. the cam belt is different to the chain on the other side of the engine right am I right that these cRs have a belt and also a chain?
@BWSTT
@BWSTT 7 лет назад
Aaron Noel then it's probably not an issue for you DIY, there is a very good picture guide on the web, just Google Audi TT cambelt and it's pretty good, a few bits I do differently but it's a solid guide

Try working on a flat 4 then make the same comment again lol. These cars are a doddle. Granted the rubber pipes are crap quality but other than that I've enjoyed every moment of mine so far. Did a rocker cover gasket change today. Took 20mins. Don't be scared to work on your own car.
