Thanks - my setup is similar, but I use the Central Station in between so I can use talkback function on people listening through my headphone amp - works great! Sometimes I get what might be what you described here - so I'll check my Universal Control to control how many signals are going to my headphones - might have other instances of it - good teaching!

I appreciate this, but my headphone amp is a Schiit, and the inputs to it are L/R XLR inputs - there is no 1/4" stereo input. I am trying to connect an Arturia Audiofuse 16rig to a Schiit Ragnarok 1, using the 1/4" outputs on the back of the Arturia, and connecting to the back of the Schiit with XLR jacks (the cables are 1/4" to XLR male). I can NOT get this to work, and I'm trying to decide if it's because the cables I bought are balanced TRS - but I don't think that should be a problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

the output impedance from this headphone amplifier (ha400) is 80 ohm...so this means i should use 80 ohm headphones on these to get the best sound? or doesnt it matter?

Would i be able to just route the cable from my headphone out, from my interface, directly into the headphone amp’s input?
@TimTalksAudio

You certainly can, but on some interfaces, you aren't able to make the headphone outputs a isolated mix. If you want to, you might need to follow the steps in the video.

Hello Tim, nice tutorial 😄 Hey, have you looked at the routing needed for using a Soundcraft UI24r? It would be nice to have a Template for using that. They have different wiring and patching I/o for these. But a great sound for mic pre " Studer". Any ideas or info would be great. It's an extra interface I'm getting used to for different or portable sessions.👍🏻

Hey mate! Thanks for the video. Is it really ok to use a dual ts to TRS stereo cable to connect the line outs on an audio interface to a headphone amp? I heard it may harm the outputs since you would be linking the two outputs like this, and the impedance on the headphone amp aux input wouldn’t be enough to absorve it, so they would impact each other. Couldn’t find anything about it in the internet, so if you could help me here would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi, great video. Understood everything minus one thing. When using the two audio interface line outs for connecting the headphone amp, aren't you getting only one stereo feed for all the headphone outputs on the headphone amp? If so, doesn't this mean that the cue mix will sound the same for every performer who is connected to the headphone outputs of the headphone amp? How do you create more cue mixes, so that each artist has a tailored mix, rather than the same mix for all performers? Would this require the use of more headphone amps and more line outputs? Seems like a waste of headphone outputs on the headphone amp if so. Would really appreciate a reply, thank you kindly in advance.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 2 года назад
In this particular example, yes. Everyone connected to this amp would have the same mix. For different cue mixes, you’ll need different outputs and different headphone amps to drive the headphones. If your looking for something that could feed more custom mixes, look into something like the Behringer PowerPlay headphone system. It takes multiple line outs from the interface into it, but then the listeners can dial in their own custom mixes!

Noob question. Can I not just use a TRS to TRS cable and go out of one line out from the 1824c, instead of using a dual mono from two outputs on the 1824c into the input of the headphone amp?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
You could, yes, but only using one output on your 1824c will only give you a mono signal. If you want stereo, you’ll need to use two. The line outputs on the back of the 1824c are all mono outputs. The only stereo outputs are the headphone outputs.
@DrMobiusOfficial
@DrMobiusOfficial 3 года назад
@@TimTalksAudio Ahhhhh didn't realize the outputs were all mono. I really don't get why they don't have the DSP to have some basic effects like compression and eq on the 1824c. You gotta double up the cost to get the Studiolive 16R, but then you lose MIDI. What were they thinking? Even the Steinberg's most basic models come with EQ, Comp, Reverb

I can only assume that the video helped by explaining some things that maybe you didn’t know before hand or were thankfully reminded of while watching. One thing I do know is that there are some people out there who might need a higher level of assistance, or might be curious to more of the details while making these connections. If this isn’t you, that’s perfectly ok! Thank you again for sharing your success.

Hello, I have an apollo twin x, which comes with only one headphone input, and I would like to extend it, I searched for Headphones Amp and I would like to know if it is possible to connect to my apollo twin without disabling the inputs that are already there occupied by my sound monitors. Or rather, is there no way for me to plug it right into the headphones input available on the UAD interface? if not, is there any material or equipment that will allow me to expand the entrance?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio Год назад
With a twin, you'll either want to connect a headphone amp from outputs 3/4, or you could come off the headphone output. The limitation of the twin is the number of outputs, so you won't be able to have many different headphone mixes.

Thanks for the info Tim. I'm new to this, and am hoping you can help with my specific setup. I have a motu m4 audio interface that I have 2 sets of monitors hooked up to, so both of my monitor outputs are spoken for. Can I just run a stereo 1/4" out of the headphone output and connect that to the inputs of the headphone amp? Will that work the same as using the 2 monitor out hookups? Thank you so much.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
Yes, you can use a TRS to TRS cable or TRS to Dual TS "Y" cable (depending on the inputs of your HP Amp). You'll only get one mix, but you'll be able to split that mix to multiple people. Also, check the manual for the M4 if that headphones can have a different mix or if it's linked to the main mix.

For balanced cables (XLR, TRS) you can get up to 100 feet (30 meters), for Audio over IP (Ethernet aka Cat6) you can get up to 300 feet (100 meters), and for unbalanced cables (guitar or TS cables) you should stay under 20 ft (6 meters)

If you didn't have a headphone amp, what would you be plugging your headphones into? An interface? A computer? You may not need a headphone amp, but if you are looking to distribute the headphone signal, you might need something like this.

@@TimTalksAudio I have a pc would I plug the USB in the computer with a headphone amp?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
You should be able to plug your headphones into your computer or your interface. An interface will most likely get the impedance closer for the 990's. If you feel like the 990's are lacking a bit, then you may want to get a headphone amp to help with the impedance.

How do we go from an 1818VSL ADAT (Slave) to another interface adat (master)? I got a UAD Dual USB but was given a used 1818VSL from a friend.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 года назад
So with the smaller Apollo Units, they only have one adat port. That is just an input port, so you would have to set the external gear as the master clock and slave the UA to the 1818.
@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios
@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios 3 года назад
@@TimTalksAudio Really? I am so confused. I guess because I am still learning (in noob land) that with the UAD Dual Twin USB input, that it would receive the audio from the 1818VSL and then output it from it's ports. Please do not misunderstand this as questioning you. I absolutely believe you. It is merely that I am CLEARLY missing something key here (among the parts of signal flow etc, etc) which prevents me from comprehending why it works in the opposite direction from what I thought. I would like to understand this as it is most crucial to my having a "Handle" on the fundamentals. Would you be so kind as to explain why the ADAT in on the UAD does not make it the interface which must be master, since it cannot output to the presonus (also, if I am misunderstanding, please correct me)? Thank you greatly for your invested time and any future time which you may donate.to my comprehension.

It's all about the signal path. A basic signal path for voice is; Voice out of head in to microphone, out of microphone in to preamp or interface, interface converts signal to 1's and 0's, 1's and 0's out of interface in to computer. It's the same thing for the adat clock. The clock needs to be created somewhere and sent somewhere else. The Apollo only has an ADAT IN, so that port can only receive signals (audio or clock). The 1818, has an ADAT in and out and can create clock. There's no way for the 1818 to receive clock from the Apollo, because the Apollo lacks the ability to send ADAT out. Therefore, the 1818 needs to have ADAT out to the Apollo In. The 1818 must be the master clock so the Apollo can sync to the ADAT clock coming in. I hope this helps!

@@TimTalksAudio DUDE!!! You're the $#!* Not that you necessarily care to know (but, i'm sharing as your deserve access to our student failings, that it may hopefully aid you as you instruct others)... ...Where I failed is taking for granted that (even in an era of built in two-way communications) NOT all communications which are digital are passed 2 ways. NOW logic would dictate that because the Apollo only has an input with no output, that would be "obvious". However, as so many devices have mulitple paths these days... my mind presumed that Audio was on a dedicated path which was locked to a single direction... ...It presumed that due to "Clock-'Synchronicity' " that there was a "Handshake" taking place digitally which was being transacted on a digital pathway... ...I hope that it makes sense why I made this error, as I am fairly new to audio/video... being more experienced in Network/Data/Communications in which "Handshake Protocols" are standard expectancy. And, I hope that my failings and your clarifications aid in proving useful to your audience base in the future. Again... THANK YOU so very much for your help.

Sure! You may not need an additional headphone amp, but if you need to split that signal out to many people, it may be better to use something like in this video to help push the signals.

Hi there, great video. I have a sampler that has very low volume output power when listening with headphones from the sampler itself. it is the Novation Circuit Rhythm. I was looking for a solution to this and a friend mentioned a portable headphone amplifier. I searched on youtube and came across this video. I want to take my sampler with me to make beats on the go or when i'm traveling. I don't want to buy an audio interface for this unless i'm also going to record into a music production software. My sampler can save my work and when i return home i can dump it into say Reason 12 in my studio. which portable headphone would recommend for this? I'd like to know so i can purchase this asap.
