🎬 ON TODAY'S MANUAL: If you're playing in a band, rehearsing is something completely necessary - still it might be inconvenient. Gathering up all bandmates home to rehearse with PA systems, guitar and bass amps and loud drums can be fun, but if you're going to do this constantly at home, you're probably going to annoy your neighbours with noise. Renting rehearsing studios or practice spaces might come as a nice solution, but still you're going to have to pay off an hour per room and it gets expensive with time. This context pushed my band towards one of the most effective and convenient solution - swipe out loud amps and PA systems for headphones! Supernova Andromeda started out in early-mid 2020, and we implemented headphone monitoring for rehearsing early on, and actually never turned back after that. We started out with a basic 8 channel audio interface, a cheap headphone amp and some basic mixing and routing on Cubase so we could rehearse quietly. That system has always worked out nicely. Later on we moved onto a more "advanced" audio interface and a better sounding headphone amp (improving the headphone amp made most of the difference out of the bunch, I really recommend it) and we're still using this method today. Hope these tips help you to make the most out of your rehearsals (: cause even if you do use amps and stuff to rehearse, I still recommend that you try out using headphones and learning some basic headphone monitoring mixing. It takes recording, writing and practicing with a band onto a whole other level in my opinion.
💡 This video was a bit more technical than usual so feel free to ask me anything on the comments section (:

🎸 So who are you? You weirdo hipster 🎸 I'm Victor Budin ( / vibudin_ - Instagram), a musician from Brazil. The most notable of my music projects is my power trio band Supernova Andromeda ( / a_supernovaa - Instagram) - my shoegaze/indie/alt rock band where I explore shimmery and fuzzy sounds from the 90's to produce my own music. I have two other projects, Magna Carta cover band, witch covers rock from all ages in an alternative rock way; and Casus Belli, witch hangs around Stoner/Doom metal. If you'd like to check out one of the bands and follow them on social media, it'll help me out a lot! I'm a big fan of the underground scene from Brazil and the world, and I want to show a bit of this universe here to you - Besides, I love talking about these genres that are so important to me since I grew up listening to them: Indie, shoegaze and Alt rock. I love exploring all kinds of gear available to create alternative music. Thanks for watching! 👻

Thanks dude-a-rino. You helped me relax knowing i can eventually jam in my apartment with a buddy and not be a dick about it to my neighbors. That smacking on the edrums tho will forever be there tho.

I would use a digital mixer instead of the sound card & DAW. If you got a cheap digital mixer with 4 auxiliary outputs & 12 inputs, for under $600, you can have 4 bus mixes (4 different mixes). The best part is you get a stable & reliable solution you can even use on your live gigs. Last thing, inorder to have a really quiet practice session, I'd have my drummer on an electric drum set. That's also better for recording & quicker to set up & easier to transport. But if you're stuck on the "acoustic drums paradigm", then keep using your current drum set.

They’re indeed a very useful tool, but they were totally out of my budget when I started out. Great solution as well (:

old guy here, not to over state what seams obvious to other old guys, bothering the neighbors is part of the point! hearing the band at a high volume seamed intuitive and necesary for the 'sound' lol, but yes we all have the need to practice quietly to not bother everyone, and its quite ambarrasing when the police arrive, carry on i just couldnt help but share that

Yep, I love loud amps and loud drums, but the peace of mind when I start rehearsing and hearing everything clearly on my headphones and just my voice and drums come out of the room.. is priceless 😂

Hello. How does the HP60 work? I am thinking of purchasing it for the same purpose, but I have doubts about its amplification power. Does the headphones you've tried sound good? Doesn't it lack power?

This is exactly what I wanted to do, not sure why I found it so hard to find this video or some information on it. I plan on going down the Focusrite route of a 6i8 - can I achieve the same output of 6 inputs, 4 headphone outputs I can monitor? Thanks
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 3 месяца назад
Yeah! Definitely a topic that’s hard to find content on. I had a lot of trouble getting this system working by myself, and took some time, so decided to summarize it all into one video. As far as I can tell, you’re going to do fine with the focusrite 6i8 bro (; great audio interface!

I would like to get some insight. Im trying to jamm with my friends at home and we already have some basic equipments. Is it doable if all our instruments connected to a mixer and then from there to an audio interface connected to a daw and finally monitored from the audio interface via a headphone preamp?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 3 месяца назад
Yep, it would work, the problem is that you’re supposed mixing all signals together into the audio interface so you’d get the same mix for everyone. It should work no problem, but if you’re looking to monitor yourself with a mix of your own, each with its own headphone mix, then going straight out of the aux outputs in your mixer to your headphone amp would be better. It’s up to you (; do whatever works best

@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 3 месяца назад
I had one at that amount of RAM, took the opportunity to upgrade but noticed no big difference to be honest. I’d recommend using it now, cause you’ll have no big issues with latency, and saving money for an upgrade further down the road (; but you do you bro, tell me what you ended up choosing later on

so on my logic doesnt show the option " send it to faders " to select the send ( track ) for each individual headphone mixes , any one have the same issue? i found if i. right click theres an option send to faders and it highlights the sends im a bit confused :(

Glad you figured it out bro (; setting this up can be quite daunting
@jimorgain63
@jimorgain63 7 месяцев назад
ok, so your working in logic, are you noticing latency? are you blending direct in with returns? what kind of electric drumset? i dont understand term shoegaze, video to explain it seams over simplified, is radiohead shoegaze, sorry if that seams like a dumb question
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 3 месяца назад
lol no it’s not a dumb question, Radiohead is not Shoegaze, My Bloody Valentine and Nothing are some examples (; latency basically depends on the specs of your Mac.. I don’t experience any noticeable latency with mine, I’m not blending direct signals, it’s all through logic so I can run some reverbs and compressors to rehearse. We used the Roland HD1, now we’re just using a Tama acoustic drum kit mic’ed up. Both should work, but electric drums are more silent

So I’ve done this. We’re using backing tracks as well. My vocalist has a slightly different mix so he can hear himself better. I’m across an issue where we have one song sounding perfect. All instruments sound great then we move onto a second song and the mix doesn’t sound good at all. Like we need to re level everything. I’m not sure exactly what I’m missing here. Have you come across anything like this?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic Год назад
Wow that’s difficult.. Does it happen to everyone in the band or just to a specific headphone mix? If it happens with everyone I’d guess there might be something wrong with the DAW you’re using. If it happens only to one headphone mix, then it might be a faulty auxiliar cable or a faulty headphone extensor maybe.. That’s hard. I recommend testing all these “variables” to see what part of the equation is not working. If you find out what’s wrong feel free to ask me for more help (: I’m not a pro but I’ll do my best to help you out

@@manualofalternativemusic appreciate that buddy. It totally is making me scratch my head like wtf. We’re gonna try again next time without any backing tracks and see if it might be them cuz it doesn’t make any sense if the first mix we sound fine then it falls apart. Good call on the extension cables for the headphones. I got some cheap Amazon ones. Thanks

@itsgmani
@itsgmani 11 месяцев назад
@@manualofalternativemusic hey buddy. We have managed to make it work. Using a headphone amp we route everything. The drums we use direct monitoring to avoid delay. I think until we get a proper digital mixer this is the best way to do it.

that happened to my one of my XLR cables was damaged, im using the behringer splitter to split signal and one goes to the interface and that one was giving all wrong un balanced loosing clarity @@manualofalternativemusic

One more question… how does the Presonus help? If you’re doing the individual mix on the DAW, what’s the benefit of it over like a $50 headphone amp?
