The book is Moses’ final speech to Israel before they cross the Jordan to claim the Promised Land. It incorporates summaries of their journey from Egypt through the wilderness, the travails and battles they faced and reaffirmations of the statues and commandments of the Torah given to Israel during this time. After setting the context for the book, the parsha begins with Moses’ recounting of the command to leave Horeb to begin the journey to the Promised Land, then the designation of leaders and judges over the people to relieve some of the immense pressure that Moses was under in teaching Israel the Word of God and bringing justice to the people. In this first chapter, Moses reminds Israel of the previous time at which the nation was near the border of Canaan, on the cusp of entering the land, and their refusal to enter in at that time through an unjustified fear caused by the evil report of the ten spies. This was the event that led to Israel wandering the desert for forty years and this was a reminder to the generation that would enter into the land, not to be like those before them. Moses then retells how Moab and Ammon refused to allow Israel to cross their land and the wars against the Amorites. This leads to the conclusion of the parsha, which outlines how Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh would have the land on the east of the Jordan river distributed to them, Israel having claimed them in the defeat of the Amorites. Finally, Moses makes a statement to Joshua telling him not to fear the enemies of Israel, as God Himself is fighting for them. ******* *More Information* Want to learn more? I was recuperating from a bicycle fall and was preparing to go out of the house tomorrow after being at home for over a week. But now I have a fever but hardly any cough. I know I have a flu or cold. Please pray that it’ll be gone by tomorrow if it be His will. Thank you.
