To be performed as a live demonstration after entering the land, the Israelites were instructed to divide into two groups and ascend two opposing mountains, Mount Gerizim (lush and fertile) & Mount Ebal (barren and rocky). Here, facing each other the tribes would hear the blessings and the curses, separated by a chasm, giving a real-time illustration of the duality of right and wrong, good and bad, blessing and curse, life and death (because of the natural contour of the hills, the landscape acted like an amphitheatre, allowing their voices to be heard between the mountains). The laws regarding ‘the enticer’ are then given to Israel, those individuals branded as false prophets, who come and entice the people to worship false gods and so wander from their covenant with YHVH. The seriousness of this crime is expressed by the punishment that would be pronounced following the discovery and conviction of someone tempting others into idolatry: death. A tenth of all produce is to be eaten in Jerusalem, or else exchanged for money. In certain years this tithe is given to the poor instead. This clear show of our Father’s heart towards the poor is extended when we see the mitzvah of charity that mandates Israel to aid a person in need with a gifts or loans. On the Sabbatical year (the ‘Shemita’), every seventh year, all loans are to be forgiven and all indentured servants set free from their term of service, unless they choose to remain with their master. ******* *More Information* Want to learn more?
