In February, confessed murderer Chris Watts provided investigators with new details about how and why he killed his pregnant wife Shanann and their two young daughters, Bella and Celeste.

I live in a country where war has been going on for thirteen years. I have seen many crimes and heard the worst. However, this crime, thousands of miles away from me, broke my heart. As a father of two beautiful girls, I cannot believe or understand what happened. This crime made me cry a lot and made me try to be a better father.. After this interview, the lead detective developed PTSD and had to leave his job. They went to do this interview to find closure and put this case to rest, but the reality of what happened was more horrific and atrocious than even a seasoned detective would ever imagine. And to this day people have the audacity to say he’s innocent, or provide him any sort of support or sympathize with him.
As a father myself I had to turn it off after he spoke about putting the kids in the car. I know what happened but I just knew what he was going to say. I couldn’t listen. My hands went sweaty, and felt physically sick. I have 3 kids. Two adult boys and a 7 year old daughter. I don’t understand how someone could do this to there own children. The trust, imagining what went through those poor childrens head at that moment. I’m actually having a small panic attack just thinking about it.
The matter-of-factness is a coping mechanism distancing himself from the horror of his actions. The denial can be so powerful that one can even dissociate from the self.

I think he did too, Shannon sounds like the kind of lady that would have fought back. Plus he said when Bella came into the room Shannon was laying on her front. Why did he turn her over, no reason.
What he did to his children is pure evil. No matter how nice he seems in conversation, normal people do not strangle their innocent beautiful children and shove them in an oil tank. I cannot get over the betrayal of a family who loved him. Its just unthinkable.
It’s absolutely dreadful and inexcusable, but I don’t think he is “evil”. Before he did this he was never a bad man. Nikki, sex, feeling like a good version of himself because of his weight loss, thrive patches, extreme financial stress (heading towards a 3rd bankruptcy and nearly half a million dollars in debt), constantly working, not sleeping, probably has an attraction to men. What he did was really the only thing that made sense to him. His motives weren’t sadistic, they were desperate. The crime was absolutely not right, but it is clear to see the unravelling of his life and psyche. It is far less complex than it seems in terms of psychologically unravelling his motives when you see it all in context. It isn’t just a case of him waking up and deciding he suddenly wanted to kill his family, I don’t think he had any desire to be brutal, but executed the crime anyway, and in part because Shan’ann was controlling his imagined destiny with Nikki with her pregnancy. Dare I say it, if Shan’ann had been even slightly more flexible regarding discussing finances, marriage, and the unborn child, I don’t believe Chris would have become so cowardly that this seemed the only way out.
@@sezthet1I’m not sure about this assessment. I think someone who is psychologically at the end of their rope is more likely to commit suicide or run away completely. The situations and people involved in tough family situations are on a spectrum as wide as can be imaged so it’s impossible to say. However, I think someone in extreme psychological distress should be more likely to bring an end to their self and not add the extra, horrific input of familicide. I doubt desperation alone explains the psychological state one would have to inhabit in order to annihilate their entire family. His financial and marital issues is FAR from unique or uncommon. Again, hard to say but desperation seems doubtful as a motive. I think some sort of serious psycho pathology is at play with him that extends past desperation. There have been the most psychologically and emotionally destitute people you can imagine who have probably not remotely considered murdering their wife, let alone their own children.
@@sezthet1 I have a degree in psychology. It's better if you stop thinking bc your mind set is completely off. He's a psychopath, and he always was. You can tell from his interviews, interactions w children. He was not desperate to get out of a bad situation. That is completely wrong. He said there was nothing wrong, and if he didn't meet NK he wouldn't have thought anything was wrong. So which is it? He didn't care about his kids. He's a liar and manipulator and yes he would want to kill himself if he was so depressed, not his wife and 3 kids and then lie and cover up his tracks. He has antisocial personality disorder and that's why his emotions lack rationality. He's a monster. He never changed.
He even admits to having such a great memory in the first interview. Saying he's so thankful for his great memory and can remember the Bible front to back.
He remembers but in honesty after listening to this, I cannot put up with his reasoning, you’ll always have more questions but we will never understand,Why because we are not a psycho killer, end of. Don’t even put it into your head.
Why do I keep coming back to this story. I watched everything there is to watch on this case over and over. Not consistently, I do give it a break. But inevitably I keep coming back to it. I think that its because everyone knows deep down that theres more to this story and theres more to the story still to come. Is it just me or what?

Same here. I also give this a break, but I come back to this one a lot, too. Not sure why. I think the NK angle is extremely interesting. If this was just the story of a guy who quickly admitted to killing his family and he was having an affair on the side, I'd think it was tragic and sad and depressing and that would be it. But there are way too many contradictions in the mistress's timeline and way too many 'gaps' in her memory. To say nothing of the concrete evidence that her phone pinged from Frederick, where Chris lived, on the night of the murders. Her phone always pinged from nearer to her own home, according to the phone records. But the night of the murders, NK's cell pinged from Frederick. Also, NK Googling Chris and Shannan months before she (NK) even started working at Anadarko and months before she even knew who Chris Watts was. Chris Watts was guilty, there is no doubt. But I believe NK may be involved, as well as some other people. And it's creepy to think of those implications.

Poor Bella was tortured. She had to witness him dragging her dead mommy around the house, then ride in the car smelling her losing her body functions and seeing her dead body on the floor board. She then had to watch him unalive her sister, knowing she was next, then fought and begged for her life to the point of biting part of her mouth off. MY GOD!!!
His wife catered to everything he wanted to eat. She kept his home clean. She gave him 2 beautiful children and a son on the way. She participated in his favorite sports and before the mistress by all accounts, they had a avid sex life. I saw videos where she was baking and cooking for him because Chris likes these. Bella said he was her hero. His family adored the ground he walked on and he killed then all. He is just evil.
Are we watching the same case? She pushed an MLM in every video under the guise of showing off her family to the world. She put her kids in all-day daycare & then put them to sleep at 7pm. She belittled her husband on live videos & was just overall an annoying person. CW is a monster. SW wasn’t a monster but she didn’t seem like a fun & caring person either
Nothing to be jealous of there. She was more into her “lives” and fake “MLM LIFE” that she had the perfect life. Far from it, she put them in debt, fed her kids DRUGS pretty much to get them to bed at 6:30 for “me time”. Put them in daycare and they had long naps during the day. They were denied water (from videos) and food and she called them monsters and basically said she was would not be a good mom if she wasn’t “thriving”. She came first. She did not deserve to die and the kids ABSOLUTELY did not deserve that either! They did not have a quality of life most children had. He would not stand up for himself and she wore the pants. They should have never got married! Her past was checkered and she was a cheat and wanted money and fame. ALL AROUND SUCKS! NK knows for SURE! Her day WILL COME!
Shan’Ann didn’t adore him. She pretended to on Facebook with the cheesy essays she sometimes wrote about him, but where is the actual evidence that she was a nice person to him? I’m not saying she was horrible all the time, but she certainly wasn’t a good wife because she refused to negotiate with Chris on her pregnancy, downsizing the house, cancelling the girls schools, and going to Aspen. It was a total and utter freak out on his part. I believe he considered leaving Shan’ann before her pregnancy. The pregnancy put a huge wall up in their marriage. He was in love with somebody else and he simply wouldn’t allow himself to develop the maturity to get through the suffering he would have to face of an impending 2nd bankruptcy, £500,000 of debt, divorce, relationship collapse, alimony and child support for 3 children he probably wouldn’t see. Not to mention he would have to be on the (public) receiving end of Shan’ann’s wrath. It’s taken prison and being exposed as the bad guy way worse than he would have been if he had left his family rather than killing them to make him realise he did have other options, but he put Nikki on a pedestal and part of his motive was to show Nikki she was first, pretend like he had made everything he’d been avoiding actually facing up to, go away. Basically what he was initially so afraid of he ended up having to face up to anyway, he didn’t want Shan’ann to control his destiny though. He did have the capability to go through hard times, but at the time he was an incredibly squashed and weak minded person. Prison has matured him, and he has forgiven himself. Unfortunately for him the world doesn’t work on the principles of why you have forgiven yourself - it works by the law. And morality. No good man does what he did. Although he isn’t a good man, he was before he committed the murders. It was Chris who did the lions share of the housework and childcare after the kids had been at private daycare since early in the morning. I can imagine the frustration of knowing your wife has been swanning about in the house all day filming herself eating protein bars then continuing to film every personal family moment. Yet that was his “job” to be a prop in her videos. Selling Thrive at the expense of her camera shy, introverted husband. They both lived beyond their means, and the cloak of success was suddenly slipping. He was going to lose Nikki, and not be able to live separately to his family, especially with the additional cost of an unwanted baby. He wilfully wiped out 4 people in his family, then now complains about having to “wait” to fulfil his real destiny of being a man of God in the free world. It’s an understandable delusion considering he knows he will die in prison. Understandable and uncontrollable human emotions I can see that Chris had that led him to do this are reasons for why he did this. Reasons are not excuses though, eventually he will realise you can’t do something so revoltingly extreme to your own children and your wife then shrug it off because you’re desperate to be a good man in society again.
@@DeborahSch there is a difference tho between each person. It was constant though especially on online video posted. Either person wasn't suited to each other, that was clear to the outside world. wasn't much in common.
I was just thinking the same thing. Those people are sharp and could break him down in ways I never in a million years could. I get the feeling they genuinely like him and his family (but of course despise what he did).
Makes you appreciate how tough a job they have. They have to listen to stuff like this and I'm sure even worse (if that's possible), every week and then go home to their own families and leave it all at the front door. I couldn't do it.
Lyn Peucker Baumhover the lead investigator has since stopped working after this case due to PTSD he can’t even bear to see two little girls without crying and feeling like he has to save them. He actually released an article about how he’s been affected by this case
It is bone-chilling the way he can sit there and nonchalantly describe what he did..the way he talks about his first born daughter moving her head back and forth trying to fight for her life as if he's just speaking about any regular ole thing ...I have no words for this psychopath.
He can remember he fixed cottage cheese for lunch but not what he said to Bella or I’d fe had to shove her into the oil tank. He said initially that his wife partially delivered the baby, then denied it when questioned later. Can’t keep his story straight for 3 hours.
In a fit of rage and perhaps blacking out in a dissociative sort or of way you don’t remember details and when he was making his lunch he hadn’t killed anyone yet.
He sounds nonchalant because he’s lying. He’s leaving out the parts that he needs to leave out whereupon you would see a genuine emotional reaction. He’s an introvert also, a lot of introverted people find it hard to know how to respond emotionally appropriately in situations even though they are feeling it. I can hear shame and remorse now in his voice and he’s been fully confronted with what he’s gone. If he had got away with it and got his delusion of Barbie and Ken life with NK fulfilled I think he would have just buried his family in his mind as if they’d been killed in an accident and tried to enjoy his life as a single man or Nikki’s new flame.
Thats what some people do when you say you break up with them. They are able to kill you rather than not be with you. But his case is different... from what ive seen, he didnt love his family.

5 years later and I'm sobbing for Bella. The fact that she asked if him if what happened to her little sister would happen to her after she watched him murder and dispose of her, unable to defend herself. His self pity schtick is so old. He was cold, calculating, and he had so many chances to stop. He attempted to smother both girls that night before Shannan got home but was unsuccessful. He gave Shannan oxytocin to try to induce a miscarriage before strangling her. He is evil.
This makes me so mad that he still won’t admit the whole truth. I firmly believe Shanann had went to bed that morning believing that her and her husband were going to work out and stay together. I don’t think the coward ever woke her up to tell her he didn’t love her anymore. He killed her while she was asleep. He killed his precious babies because they knew what he had done. And it just shows how unconditional children’s love is for their parents... even after all of that she talked to him on the way saying “daddy it smells” like she was just still going for a ride with daddy and wanted to tell him about the nasty smell. I think instead of prison isolation, they should put Watts into a zoo, stripped naked in a 5'x5' cage, so that people can come from all over the world to watch and film him like a freak show.

The thing that kills me is that his mother was so busy hating Shanann, when she should have been hating that mistress who ultimately destroyed her son’s mine! Well that begs the question of what’s wrong with her that she’d marry someone she wanted to change? Personality wise I think she was fine with his passive quiet nature. It left the spotlight open for her so she can make all the decisions for the family. I love Agent Tammy. Her voice becomes soft when needed and Chris is encouraged to discuss details. Her laugh, along with the others, clearly makes Chris feel comfortable.
Why would anyone want to have a beautiful family and then kill them as if they mean nothing to you??? Whatever happened in his childhood is definitely coming to the fore , really very tragic and unbelievable, 😢 poor kids and their mom 😢

Bella asked softly “Is the same thing that happened to CeCe…going to happen to me daddy?” The anger I feel after hearing this is outrageous. Bella caught him m*rdring her mom & her sister. She was awake, following him around. This was hours of psychological torture to her and CeCe before taking their lives.
This guy is a complete psychopath. The fact that he did all of this so calm and collected and acted so nonchalant afterward is frightening. Shanan would have been fighting for her life and Nicos. Me too....it's haunting. The thing that gets me is that he could easily have just moved out and stayed with NK. He could have literally left and abandoned his family just as so many other worthless men do daily. He could have been gone when she got back because he had a full month to take all of his clothes and everything and just go. No matter what he says, he did NOT have to murder his family. He didn't even have to have that alleged "I want to break up" talk that he claims triggered his anger. No, he killed them because he couldn't afford to keep them....couldn't pay the freight for an ex, three kids, and his demanding lowlife concubine. I hear she's moved on and changed her name. She's a black widow and, sadly, this mess is going to catch up with her eventually. He's the fool though because he lost EVERYTHING.....his kids, his wife, his unborn son, his freedom, and little dignity that he had as a man and father. He will NEVER be a grandad, will never walk a child down the aisle, never be referred to as daddy again, never teach a kid how to drive, etc... Every single holiday will be in JAIL. That big beautiful house that he has will go into foreclosure or someone else will move in. His parents will die while he's in there and he'll be orphaned. And, perhaps the most justifying is Nikki will find another fool. She'll be with another man, will have kids, and won't do a thing for him while he's there. I hope all of that hot sex and "excitement" that he got from cheating was worth it. He's a pathetic coward.

The detectives are saying that even in prison he is listening to violent metallica and reading books about MURDER. And he's lying and making excuses for it ("they just gave it to me so I read it"). He's a PSYCHOPATH who has ZERO remorse. The dumbest psychopath too, he's not even a good liar.
He took the details of Bella, like a pinch of salt. Not a crack in his voice as they laid out the details of the trauma he caused to that sweet little princess mouth. So cruel and remorseless. When I picture what she went through, makes me wanna hug my daughter and promise her that while I'm in this world. Nobody will do that too her.

Chris’s mother is a nightmare! And then he goes and marries someone with equally strong personality. I think years of suppressing his opinions and emotions finally boiled over. He got a taste of a woman who “let” him be an equal and have a personality and opinion. Completely foreign to his whole life. I think when he unalived Shanann he was mentally offing his mother. This is a true instance of just finally snapping. I actually believe he was on auto pilot through most of it. He finally let his emotions take over. He’s never done that and keeps saying he didn’t “feel” and anger but after suppressing it his whole life he doesn’t even recognize what he was feeling. The poor family 😢

His mom seems like the mother in law from hell from the stories I’ve heard like the birthday party etc. I’ve always had a feeling that his mother and sister not liking Shanann did play a part in this whether he was aware of it or not. There was definitely some resentment where his family didn’t attend his wedding and just little things like that

I agree. I think he premeditated killing them. Calling to say he would go out to the site, right then he knew where he would put them. When questioned about what he did with Shanann at the work site they were not specific. It seems he may have already had a hole dug? I cannot believe Shanann would not have fought for herself and her unborn son. Most likely he held her arms down with his legs. He looked into his wife's eyes as he strangled the life out of her and it doesn't seem to haunt him. I am a mother of 2. A 1 year old, and a 11 year old. It brakes my heart into pieces. I cannot listen till the end, during the part with the little girls. It hurts my heart so much, that everytime i hear or read something about this case, i hust wanna kiss and hug my kids so tight, and say i love you so much.

Thats crazy ! I was thinking the same thing because this being a year anniversary of my dogs death - I have been so upset . Yet this guy could do something like this without any remourse . Its beyond frightening that there's people like this .

Bella was subjected to absolute horror - her mother being dragged down the stairs wrapped in a sheet, her sister was smothered in front of her and she knew the same fate awaited her and then fought for her life as he smothered her.

The thing for me that goes against the 'I snapped' excuse, is the point where his little daughter wandered in and asked what's wrong with mummy. Would that not be enough to snap you back to reality? If not, then how about when you put your dead wife in the car with the kids, drove them some distance away, suffocated them, and then dropped their bodies into oil tanks? It truly truly angers me, because it's kind of like he's gotten away with it. He feels no true guilt or remorse, because he's in denial. He believes he snapped and so wasn't responsible in that moment. The worst of it is that his family and mistress enable and support him in this belief.
What really stuck with me are Bella's final words. "Daddy, no...!" That was Chris' last chance to spare one of his family members. If I was in Chris' shoes with just a tad bit more humanity, hearing my little girl say those words wouldve instantly grounded me. Imagine a little girl who is frightened and who has a vague idea about what her dad had just done to her mom and sister, but is young enough to be very confused about what her dad is doing say, "Daddy, no...." Breaks my heart into millions of pieces to think about the girls tone of voice and what she was feeling in that moment. ... And yet, Chris continued on. Hes a damn monster who is comparable to Jeffrey Dahmer in terms of psychopathic expertise by being highly convincing to the public that they are normal functioning humans. Chris should have received the death penalty. I have no sympathy for how he feels...IMO this was premeditated. What I find interesting is how he failed the polygraph. Perhaps being a successful psychopath doesnt lend itself to the ability to verbally lie.
He was done with his family...he wanted a new life. He's thought about it for a long time,that's why he had so many thing prepared. He knew where to put the dead bodies. All he thought of was the girlfriend fuck the rest.

Exactly right, every bit of suffering would be comforting because it's deserved. It shows on a fundamental level he doesn't think he deserves all this. But, he finally admits she didn't say that to him when he killed her, she had said it before!? For all we know, it could have been weeks, months, years before, when she said it!?
I think he killed them because of money as well it was mentioned earlier on that she said u will never see the kids and she was taking everything and getting child support. He hated the house they were in but she loved it. After they came back from NC I think he made is mind up that divorce wasn’t an option but he didn’t want his family anymore. I think he killed the girls because they saw to much and were witnesses.

Sometimes having a heart can be a curse but in those moments you need to remember truth holds the highest value, and be thankful the truth has come to light. Imagine if the truth never came out. His daughters are now in the haerts and thoughts of millions of people just like they deserve. That's not really comforting but it's something.

Most guys like this live ok their first few years but someday he will get moved to a different prison and trust me the inmates will torture this guy and the guards can't help him he will live in hell before it's over..he will get what he deserves. Like the other baby killer recently lived ok for 3 years until he got transferred to another prison in a different state. To help over crowding they move them around every few years some prisons are safe some NOT. Other killer The inmates put rat posion in his food, sprayed him with acid, beat him in the gym almost to death, the guy ended up looking like a zombie. Something to think about: the mistress said during an investigation interview that she asked him if he really had 400k and that she did ask that to be sure she was getting into a man who could support himself and wasn't poor enough to be with her. He killed her whole family and tried do get away with all that. He had a life insurance as an employee to the Anadarko and it would pay about 400k for the passing of Shanann, Bella and Cece. Now his parents was tryng to receive that money, while Shanann's parents was trying as well. That rings me the bell, because the mistress was dirty enough to check on him if he had the money he told her sometime he had, the same amount the life insurance would pay in case of the passing of his family, and he was prepared to live a life with another woman. To be with the mistress he would have to show her he had money enough!
I just listened to her interview yesterday and I’m pretty sure she asked about a 401K, not $400k. Like a retirement plan. I found it interesting because in the event of a divorce, Shannan would have been entitled to half of his 401k retirement savings, whether that was $2k or $200k. Just wanted to clarify that, I don’t think she thought he had $400,000.
He's in protective custody within prison and has had to be relocated many times already due to threat of inmate violence, the whole unit has to be locked down when he's being transported
I think they know hes guilty. The tragedy they cant face is in admitting their son is as good as gone/ dead too. In denying it to some extent they get to keep his memory alive.

It wasn't until August 13th when NK felt Chris was acting strange and hiding something, that she decided to Google Shanann and found out herself. That was the DAY NK knew Chris was lying and she deleted all her texts and was over with him. She never thought that in less than a week, you are going to find out Chris murdered his divorcing wife and 2 little girls, in the most sickest way imaginable.

My theory is and always has been - He was waiting for Shan’ann when she arrived home, most likely hidden where he could quickly run up the few steps she would take upstairs in the dark after she took her shoes off. He had a mask on, nitrile gloves, long sleeved dark clothing. He took her to her knees on the landing and wrapped her arms around her, then knelt on the middle of her back and pushed his body weight into her neck while he strangled her. Seeing as she was 15 weeks pregnant, the extra weight of the baby in her abdomen would have caused respiratory distress faster due to the extra pressure on the lungs, face down. When he rolled her over that’s when I believe he saw mascara rolling down her face, from the struggle of the strangulation. If she had gone to sleep, being a clean person just arrived home from the airport, she would have wanted to take her make up off before bed. Chris said she always did. She was never in that bed. The bed sheets were used to wrap bodies in and pillow cases etc were used to lift excrement from the stairs. Those areas can be seen in the crime scene videos where the carpet has been bleached and vacuumed. A pillowcase with excrement stains was also found in the rubbish bin. Shanann was not killed on the bed. There was no conversation between them. At the risk of sounding crude,it would have been impossible to strangle someone to death in bed and for their excrement to not leak into the mattress. Bladder and bowels open completely. The children were already dead and wrapped in the basement. 100%. He wasn’t the sort who was going to leave it to chance that his children would see or disturb him killing their mother and become hysterical. As any child would. Let alone 2 small children. I don’t think he put them to bed, I think he drugged them around the time they ate and waited for them to lapse into unconsciousness. That would fit with Shan’ann’s original planned return home of 6pm, which later turned into a 2am arrival. I doubt he was anticipating having to keep his children dead in the house for such a long time, but it must have been imperative they were not detectable in the house before and after Shan’ann returned home. That is why I believe he checked the temperature of the freezer, he was considering whether he would need to (or maybe he did) utilise the freezer to stop his children’s bodies from leaving cadaver odours. He may have cleaned the freezer afterwards which could account for a temperature check/readjust. It was certainly in his mind, how to store his children in the time he had to wait. A drug overdose fits with the children being blue. Asphyxiation due to drug overdose causing vomiting and possibly seizures whilst unconscious is in my opinion what the cause of death of his children was. This would also account for why he changed their clothes and bedding, there would likely have been vomit and other bodily fluids expelled from the girls that he needed to clean. His inability to describe what a smothering actually looks like regarding his children convinces me further that he is lying they were alive at the oil site. People who have been smothered go red, then purple, then lividity/purple mottling. Blue is a colour associated with cyanosis, an inability of the body to absorb oxygen and subsequent sudden respiratory failure (suffocation/aspiration of vomit and choking). People who have been killed instantly will not go blue for some time unless their own body has cut off the supply of oxygen and the person has essentially suffocated. Most often seen, almost exclusively in drug overdoses, seizures, and sudden cardiac arrest. Both his children were asthmatic and weak, respectfully, it would not have been hard to overdose his children pretending it was another medicine that they already took. It is impossible that his children turned blue between their supposed death in the car and their entrance into the tanks.

I'm laying in bed with my headphones in listening to this monster. To the left of me 3 year old twins, in the bunk above me my oldest 5 year old son. In the room next door my wife and 1 year old daughter. I can't imagine doing anything but protecting them. Having watched a few of these terrible murder trials, this question keeps coming up: How stupid do you have to be, to think that even though the victim was last seen or known to be at your/their own home and with you, as long as you "dispose of the body" and clean up the scene, there won't be enough evidence to figure out that you killed them?
