Peter Cullen’s Optimus is like a wise and gentle dad. And David Kaye’s Optimus is like a big brother trying his best to take care of everyone. And I love them both

Peter Cullen is the best because his voice makes his Optimus Prime sound like a mixture between a warrior and a leader figure; strong, bold, but also gentle at same time. However, David Kaye’s performance is an honorable mention for he sounds more like a subadult soldier; brighter, more subtle, and much more humble. These performances work perfectly in their own context, with Peter Cullen sounding like a wise leader, while David Kaye sounds more like a developing leader.

What I think would be cool is if they make the Cybertron origin movie is have David Kaye voice Orion Pax and then after he gets the Matrix and becomes Optimus Prime is to have Peter Cullen voice prime after getting the matrix in the same movie

I mean there are other examples of other voice actors and they are good, but none can top what Peter set. I will never get tired of hearing that voice

I think a comparison of Kaye and Cullen might be more “apples to apples” if you used clips from G1 instead of Prime. Kaye’s prime is a young leader in training/legend in the making. Prime’s version of optimus is a long veteran of the way with far less doubts and much more reservation in showing his personality. As they say in the show “primes don’t party.” G1 optimus splits the difference. He’s a veteran of the war and sure of himself as a leader but is very comfortable with his complete personality, not afraid to be angry, happy, playful in front of his subordinates. He is still my favorite version of this prime for that very reason: he’s a more complete relatable character. And kaye’s version is my second favorite for also being a complete character albeit a younger, subordinate one. After that I’d probably go with Prime [and sigh RiD since same version], Cyberverse, movies and unicorn trilogy. And unicorn trilogy prime isn’t because of voice acting. It’s just that they didn’t give prime much to do with in the trilogy from character standpoint. He’s the hero, not much else.

I support Kaye if for no other reason outside of him being so famous for playing various versions of Megatron, so it's so refreshing to hear his take on the old truck. It helps that Animated's Optimus was portrayed as younger and new to his role. Ironically, this is kind of how Beast Wars portrayed Optimus Primal, Kaye's Megatron's nemesis.

When your Optimus Prime has been the voice of two different Megatrons... It's kind of strange to think about it that way.

This is honestly apples and oranges, Peter and David are vastly different characters, but both creative and well written iterations of the character of Optimus

I’m seeing a lot of Praise for Peter Cullen in these comments (and rightfully so) but also not nearly enough praise for David Kayne. His Optimus Prime gave us a character growing into leadership. A prime who wasn’t gifted the wisdom of the Primes, but instead had to earn it. His humility, his honor, and his integrity as a leader are all genuine, and we see him earn them over the course of his journey to become a leader.

David Kaye does a good young inexperienced Optimus Prime. And Peter Cullen is OG Prime.

I miss Peter's G1 rendition of Optimus. He wasn't a great war time leader, but he was a fun character. If the TFP one was more warm and open as the G1 version, we'd have a definitive version of Prime. A competent war leader that is also a dad figure. David Kaye does a great Optimus in his own right, it's ironic how BW Megatron idealized G1 Megatron even having his namesake while Animated Optimus idealized those from the Great War and wanting to be a hero in his own way.

While Peter Cullen will always be the definitive Optimus Prime for me, David Kaye will always hold a sense of nostalgia for me since Transformers Animated was one of my favorite Transformers shows back when I was a kid. I think a good way for how I can sum up my thoughts on the two actors and the way they portrayed the character is as follows: Peter Cullen will always be Optimus Prime, but David Kaye probably gave us the best portryal of Optimus as Orion Pax.
