So you Influenced my audio work sustainably. Thanks for sharing your expertise 🙏🏼 I would be interested in seeing you mix multiple lav mics within one Dialoge. Hands down best video on editing dialogue. Simple and you explain what the actual plugins are doing. Quick question though, what about normalization? When and why do you normalize?
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 2 года назад
Better late than never for a reply my bad! Normalization is ONLY important if you need to meet standards. In other words, if you're mixing a film for distribution, especially theaters, normalization becomes critical. (And of course that's because normalization is a tool for average loudness - in that it adjusts the "volume" to fit a loudness standard for a given medium).

You should do a "Channel Mixing" on it with "Stereo 2.0" or "Matrixed Stereo" options, since you modify the signal, it needs to be "re-recorded".

How about doing the basic Track Laying in Premmiere Pro itself and then importing the whole project onto Audition as a multi track project, work on it and then re-export the stereo output to Premiere? I usually work in Pro Tools, had once tried to fiddle with Audition but at that time it didn't have a keyboard shortcut to zoom in or out the tract and that put me totally off

@@OliverJHughes Hi Oliver...would you be up for doing a video focused on using the the Parametric EQ for vocals/dialogue? I would love some more education on the best ways to use it during mixing and mastering. My husband and I are producing an effects-driven audio drama. The vocals sometimes get lost. I am thinking the parametric EQ may be the most effective way to clarify and brighten the vocals but my understanding of the para EQ is rudimentary. More instruction from you would be great! thank you in advance for considering! Elizabeth
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 4 года назад
That's a great idea for a video. IN the meantime though, most vocals respond really well to two simple EQ adjustments. Using the second band (Usually labeled '2') pull down those frequencies right around 200-300hz 3-4dB. And increase the 'Q' amount so it sweeps a bit wider. (Usually about 0.5 Q). And then use the very high end Shelf option by boosting the H signal above 5k-10k. (again, 3-4dB). You'll have to click the Q box to get a "Shelf" shape on it. Let me know if that helps! And also remember: if your vocals are getting lost in the mix - compression is your first, and best friend.

Excellent video mate thanks for the upload. Is there a way of doing this and copy and pasting the effects to multiple clips of dialogue? Just wondering because I'm editing my film at the moment and I have lots of short sections of dialogue for the one scene in the same environment that would probably just need to have these effects applied to all but I can't see how to do that and when I edit each small section one by one I'm trying to keep it the same and listening to how it should sound then hearing subtle differences when clips change on my timeline in Premiere. Hope this makes sense and thanks again
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 3 года назад
Sadly, Premiere still doesn't let you save a "Channel Strip Preset" like many audio programs (And if they've updated it I haven't seen it), so your best bet would be to organize your audio in a way that the Track Mixer works for you. (Meaning, like you said, if you have similar sounding dialogue sections, make sure they're organized on one track, and then apply the effects to the Track Mixer as opposed to the Clip Mixer. It does the whole track)

Hey Oliver! As usual, great content. I was wondering... where in this process would put additional effects. Reverb, for example. I tend to use reverb to settle a voiceover in a mix in cases where the original recording was very dry. I do voice acting work sometimes and I have my own booth for it. It's pretty dead in that area and I have often wondered at which point I should be using reverb to get the most out of it without it effecting the actual sound of the voice. So far, i have been doing my compression, EQ, reverb and then limiter. Would you do this in a different order? I've heard some people put additional effects after limiting but i don't see the point as you can potentionally screw up the amplitude of your signal which the limiter has nicely tidied up earlier in the chain. This could perhaps be sorted out in mastering maybe? For context, I tend to use the studio reverb (Default plugin on audition) with 100% dry and 4-5% wet. So it's a sweetener to settle the voice in to the rest of the mix and it helps me to place the voice in terms of how close or far away it is from the listeners ear in relation to the rest of the mix. I visualize it like this. The rest of my mix is a nice, airy fluffy cloud... with occasional turbulence. The vocal comes in, with it's dryness but has been compressed and EQ'd nicely, like a cement block and disturbs the cloud. So i used reverb to turn that cement block in to a comfortable sofa cushion. Instead of powering through the mix, it makes a dent (szie of which is affected by the reverb used and it's volume) but is light enough to be supported by the fluffy cloud and sit one the airiness of the soundtrack/game audio/whatever i happen to be working on at the time. I would love to know your thoughts on this.
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 3 года назад
Interesting take on reverb! I would never personally add reverb to a VO, unless the visual elements call for it. Meaning, if we’re seeing someone in a big room and the recording sounds out of place. But for typical VO, I’d never add reverb. Now if I did, I’d put it last before the limiter, just like you said. Don’t want to mess with that final gain, and also adding verb after all the other effects makes the most sense.

Hey Oliver, that DeEsser setting affects the entire track or just that portion of the mix which was highlighted? Additionally, when is the multitrack function used as I've seen some engineers use that for processing vocals.
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 2 года назад
Hi! Wow, sorry for being WAY late on the reply - the DeEsser only works on the highlighted frequency band - which is why it's so magical. And multitrack is only important if you have, dare I say, multi tracks! In other words, it's a regular mixer when you have multiple audio tracks to mix together. That's why I love Audition so much because it's the only DAW that allows you to do so much in depth work on a single track.
