Dude in the yellow shirt needs to learn how to keep his mouth shut. First off he's annoying and says nonsense and the guy to the left is clearly thinking to himself "stfu". On top of that he talks over great riffs and lyrics. Meanwhile my guy in the blue keeps his mouth shut and take it all in. Hats off to him!
72 seasons has a combination of thrash and hard rock elements. The music on load fits James’ voice so well. With 72 seasons, he vocally has outdone himself. I absolutely loved it.
This is funny. I believe it’s because we all have our way of seeing Metallica and ways we as the audience want them to be. When they go in directions some fans don’t like, they get upset and say the thing lol.
@Black Wind Fire And Steel (Thrash) not by a long shot but from your screen name I can see why you wouldn’t like them. If you like Black Sabbath, like at all, (which is almost required) then those albums (not st anger) have something for you.
Dude has no clue what he is talking about when it comes to that song. It’s fine he doesn’t like it but to say it may be the worst in their entire catalog is a completely idiotic statement.
36:08 you fellas must not be drummers or aware of how the instrument is played. But I can assure you the “going away” of the hi-hats when the bass drum accent occurs is not an “edit” lol. What’s happening is Lars’ right hand is traveling to the crash cymbals. The bass drum strikes have no hi-hat, it’s a crash cymbal which is a different frequency. Hope this helps. 👍
I was thinking that too but I wasn't sure if that was all they were talking about. The right hand leaves the high hat for cymbal crashes because the left hand is underneath it and kind of trapped.
I really like almost every song which is pretty rare for me. I liked about half the songs on hardwired, but this one I like all but two of the songs which are track 4 and the "if darkness had a son". Chasing light is good, room of mirrors is good and has a dyer's eve type of vibe. And "crown of barbed wire" chorus is so bad ass. I do haven't digested the last few songs on the record but so far I like this album a lot. The vocal melodies and guitar riffs are awesome on this record.
@@georgemarko8403 Not quite. It starts with the vocals and guitar. Fuel and Chasing Light are the only two to start solely with vocals. You could maybe count Anesthesia if we stretch the definition of vocals, but I wouldn't count it myself
There's actually a video of Kirk teaching Crown of Barbed Wire to James and Rob and they kinda work on it there and then which is pretty cool. "Metallica New Riff Tuning Room Montreal 19/07/2017"
1. How can you not like 'One' 2. You spoke over the best part of the album at the end of room of mirrors. 3. They do that kind of thing literally all the time
This album has grown on me a lot in the last couple weeks. Lux and the last 3 songs hit me immediately but the more I've taken it in, the more I appreciate this album as a whole. My ONLY complaint is the guitar tone/feel is so similar across the whole thing, it feels more like one big song than individual ones. But I'm happy.
i feel like the whole album is one big song. it tells a story, its metallicas story, and its a human story. theres a beginning, a middle and an end, especially with the thank you good night - which i truly hope it does not mean the last met album :( i thank metallica for every record, and for every emotion i have felt listening to their music.
Similar experience. Felt like a flatline chug most of the time, with some nuggets every now and then that felt immediately wasted. Frustrating listen, but there was something intriguing enough about it that I kept giving it another go and another. Inamorata definitely hit me the strongest, and overall I ended up appreciating the whole album for what it is, and not dismissing it for what I wished it was. Definitely redemption after Hardwired...
@@PatrickMusilek James used a Hot-Rodded Marshall Head that Eddie Van Halen gave to him as gift. James wanted to use this Marshall Head on "Hardwired" but the amp wasn't working properly. They were able to get the legendary Jim Soldono to fix the head before making "72 Seasons" so that's the guitar tone your mindless ears are stepping on. Listening to you guys talk about instruments shows your ignorance of tones and sounds. And the whole band has agreed to write songs that they can play until they are 70 and maybe older, because they aren't a band that's gonna stop anytime soon. And why is Rudolph's father a human, holy red nose bro. Songs with strings, they all have strings, you should say acoustic guitar or classical instruments, because those literally are more straightforward.
@@michaelh7453 It's not boring... but definitely could be shorter. Nothing special about this song, but I think people are enjoying this song empacticly for James and his broken heart. But musicaly just an OK song
'72 Seasons', 'Lux Æterna' & 'If Darkness Had a Son' are pretty good songs imo... I bought this album on CD (I ended my original CD collection recently... 1.415 CD's) The only Metallica albums that I bought and I listened only two times and didn't like them are St. Anger', 'Death Magnetic' and 'Load' and I found 'Reload' mediocre... but I like all their other albums...👍🏻
No way, In Flames (just as an example) is known for their guitar harmonies and they have released more albums Metallica. Plus they haven't had any "Loads or Reloads" in their catalogue without solos.
Just got to the end and I enjoyed it so thanks for that. None of my friends like the same music as me so it's good to see other's opinions on it, even when you don't always agree. I think Room of Mirrors is my favourite song on it right now, the lyrical content I can really related to and I just love dual guitar harmonies.
Patrick, I just needed to pop in here to tell you that I don't understand how you don't have 3 times the number of views. Your channel and you three guys together are very special. Your Metallica Reactions, in particular, have become like watching Norm Macdonald videos on some random day where I sit and end up spending the day watching the same old videos I've seen a thousand times.
Really enjoying the creativity from this album. Reminds me so much of Load. Love it. I feel like Metallica are allowing themselves to have fun again by allowing their varying musical inspirations to show. James' vocals have been a pleasant surprise as well with new devices with more melody and vibrato.
At my first listen Lux AEterna caught my attention, and it *was* my most favorite at that time, but man after a few more listens, Inamorata just really grew on me and goddamn it's legitimately now my most favorite one. Just, amazing. It's an 11-minute song that doesn't feel like an 11-minute song, and I wanted more....like, I don't want it to stop haha
Too Far Gone?, Room of Mirrors and Inmorata have great harmonies that I really enjoy that let me keep wanting to revisit those songs. I really wish this album had more harmonies like that. If I was the producer I’d have pushed this album in the direction. Like come on lads, this is the great shite that like a great rug really ties the room together. I feel like they Metallica misinterpreted why people didn’t like LuLu. I’m upset we don’t get some of the style guitars, ballad sound from the song Jr Dad. I want to like Jr. Dad but then Lou who just sounds tone deaf talking over Metallica I want to hear. I also wish there was a Instrumental on the album. I love hearing classical metallica guitars then mixing with heavy metal guitars. Love to see them go back to those elements again. You Must Burn! Has a nice slow groove. Lux is a nice fun fast song. But overall the first listen through, I have to just accept that Metallica moves in their own direction. Right now I want the direction Tool moved into. Trippy metal. When you listen to Orion from 1986 before Tool existed. Tool as a band especially with FI have gone great metal that in an alternate reality Metallica did more in that space. More music like Orion. Taking us on a visual journey. My hopes. As an adult, Tool hasn’t let me down with their new albums. Metallica new albums I find a couple of songs I can love. Examples…. I love The Day That Never Comes & Spit Out The Bone. To me those two songs are as good as any song off the early albums. I truly love them on that level. I don’t know if I can say that with any song on here yet. But I do love those harmonies on the last 3 songs of 72 seasons.
I haven't heard Lulu yet, but I think I agree with what you are saying in that I wish there was a variety of more clean guitar sounds, and more minimalistic "ballad" sounding parts.
Appreciate you guys. First time coming across your corner of the internet. Great reaction and entertaining upload overall. New sub here. All the best for the future, guys 🤘
Ahh man this album just gets better with each listen for me, front to back.. I love it!! (least favourite track is Sleepwalk My Life Away) I definitely didn't and still do not feel the same way about Hardwired. P.S. You guys are wrong (lol) Crown Of Barbed Wire is a great track so is Chasing Light !
This album is a "grower". The more I listen to it, the more I like it! Top 3 songs for me would be Inamorata, Room of Mirrors and Lux Æterna. I think this album will go down as the best modern Metallica album post St. Anger.
I don't know what the fuck happened to my phone that made me spam reply your comment but I'm so sorry about that. Anyways I was trying to say that I completely agree with you and thought he was drugged tf out during the Kill Em All video
I feel like you're always going to hear things that sound like parts of other songs. That is to be expected from a band that has been around for so long and had basically the same songwriters the whole time. But, don't let it take away from the current song or album itself.
Yeah boys, you got to react to their death magnetic album. I want to see your opinion about the loudness war on this album that destroyed it. But the songs are still great!
After listening this album 10 times or so, stating that my first impresion was meh+, now I really love the album overall. I think it's the metallica fan in me that always wants more, but always forget that they are in 2023 just like me, and time flies, and I dont know where I am in time, I forget very often that they aren't the guys who I felt in love in justice, but they are still a great band, and they are still honest, and that is a key to analysing music. If the musicians are honest, their music has to evolve just like them, evolve not in the way you want, just the way it is. You're no longer in your 20's, so you your music should sound like in your 20's, wouldn't that be trying to imitate your own young self?
If/when you listen to Load and Reload a lot more of this album will make sense, quite often when you say something is "Black album" it's more like Load/Reload
The other guy at the end of Inamorata was James talking to Greg Fidelman, i believe he started producing for them on Death Magnetic, so if you react to that album and Hardwired, its all him. I also believe, looking at Black album behind the scenes footage of them making the album, they have a sound engineer they have used since then as well. Dont know his name.
Pretty sure Death was Rick Rubin. But if greg was involved he did all the heavy lifting. Although I think Death is my favorite album since Justice. If you count the Garage then that's my favorite by far since justice.
36:09 It's pretty easy, the Hi-Hat goes away because it's not getting played on the base drum hits. Instead a crash cymbal is being played which doesn't have this splashines because it's only one cymbal and not two. Actually not difficult to get lol.
So many interesting ideas in this album. Love the vocal experimentations, especially. But as always with modern Metallica, everything needs to be %30 shorter. They desperately need a real producer that can say no to them, but that's not gonna happen since they seem to value the comfort and control that comes with an in-house yes-man engineer like Fidelman more. All in all a very enjoyable but "just OK" album. Inamorata is an instant classic though. Best song since The Outlaw Torn.
They say this is the most stress free album they've ever made so I can pretty much guarantee if they are all in agreement they won't let the producer change their mind.
2:50:48 "tHaTs nOt MeTaLLiCa" The audacity. Some nobody telling the greatest band to ever exist one of their new songs "isnt metallica" lmao only metallica get to decide what is or isnt metallica. Never met anyone that is more of a music snob than an audio engineer.
Really interesting and honest session guys. I know most everything Metallica (not anywhere as technically savvy as you of course) and your take on most everything was spot on. Thank you. You have a great angle for things like this. Please keep it up. Much love and appreciation from Kel and I. The Kel ‘N’Rich Show PS…My favorite Metallica cover/mash up is MFate Medley, Rich
Really enjoyed this show. 72 comes over somewhat as a Re-Wired To Self Destruct LOL but some exceptional stuff here and now lots more to unpack thankyou! The very definition of a 'grower' and shout out to the Diamond Head-esk Too Far Gone love it! \m/
I was liking it but dude in the yellow shirt, there is a whole section after each song where you get to talk. Why talk over the solos and all the interesting parts?
⚡ Title Track, Screaming Suicide and Lux are probably my favorites of this album I'm kinda on the fence about the other songs. Sorry for changing my comment my bad😂
I often wonder why they turned the crunch down. They used to be known as the Captains of Krunch. That being said, I have yet to skip a song on this album. I love it.
Yeah I’ve honestly felt the last two albums were under gained. 72 tone is better than Hardwired where the guitars were distractingly weak for the material, but still missing something here. The incessant splashy hi hat got really old and I feel the album is too bassy and muddy, but still better than HW. Some EQ, more bite I’m the guitars, and don’t play the hi hat for 80 minutes straight and it’s a damn solid album.
Their live show has most recently had 16 songs - that includes encore - and lasts at least 2:00. There are several different well-placed breaks. During the hardwired tour they did a 20-minute fun break on Now That We’re Dead, just like they used to do with Seek and Destroy in the 90’s.
Ngl i feel like you guys are the only other people that noticed the Batman riff in Shadows Follow, everyone else i watch never noticed and it drove me crazy lol
Hey that is ME wearing the yellow lol! But I will take the compliment! Chris Schoenberg (who is to my right, in the room with me) wears a different metal band shirt every day. And I mean every day too. We went garage sale-ing in 90° weather last weekend and he literally wore a black metal shirt!
When Chris… the one next to you. Asked the other Chris after chasing light if there was any other Metallica song that started like that with the vocals. Fuel. That is the only other Metallica song I know of with just vocals in the intro
Those triplets on Too Far Gone? are one of the best things in the album... yet way too short... But somehow it felt like The Offspring... IDKW Yet more Offspring in Room Of Mirrors at 2:47:25 !!
The ONLY thing I don’t love about this album is the solos don’t elevate the songs into the stratosphere like The Ripper has always done. So sad. They clearly let each member bring what they wanted and pressed themselves to greatness while Kirk phoned it in somewhat. It’s good. It’s just not on the level of the rest of the instruments, vocals and dynamics. A couple standouts but mostly riffs in one spot on the neck and if you think of Disposable Heroes, Struggle Within, Memory Remains and so many others you know it doesn’t compare. Ok, so it doesn’t stand with the greatest solos of all time. I’m ok with that, but honestly it’s that it doesn’t even quite take the song to flight altitude. And yeah I do miss the fade to black, I forgiven, Orion ballad we could have had. I’d add a song or two and ask Kirk to commit to re-recording everything.
Not sure if you’ve seen the interviews, but the reason Kirk’s solos all seem to sound the same and like past albums is because he basically just recorded a bunch of improvised solos and handed them to Lars and Greg to slice up, copy and paste as they see fit. So no composed and specifically crafted solos to suit the song. Just a bunch of generic Kirk shred.
I have seen that, and once I heard that it did make more sense. That is not an uncommon way to record guitar solos, however I think I do prefer when there's a little more thought put into them. That being said I think people over think them and that's when we get solos that are not enjoyable to listen to and just focus on being technical.
@@PatrickMusilek All fair points. I think it becomes an issue (well hard to even call it an issue) but a common thought I see and agree with is...Kirk's idols aren't metal shred gods but the blusey improv guys. He'd rather be David Gilmour than Yngwe Malmsteem. The problem is... Kirk isn't as good at off the cuff improv as those guys, so in my opinion we are often left with solos that repeat the same exact blues licks, same notes, same patterns, etc. He's reused the same exact parts on every album since Death Magnetic. In all fairness, this guy doesn't have to prove anything to anyone at this point in his career, but I think it is painfully obvious how much better his solos are when he composes them and writes them for a specific song instead of having a bag of interchangeable blocks to throw around. He's taken this approach for the last few albums, so it's getting a bit old, and I think his better improv stuff was already used up, so we are kind of just getting the repeats and leftovers. It seems more apparent if you follow the "plot" of Metallica albums I suppose, but if you follow Kirk's lead work from DM through Hardwired to 72 Seasons you can better feel the sense of this was neat the first time, okay I've already seen this by the second one, and the third time it's like oh we're still doing this? Side note, I love your breakdown. I'm not an audio engineer but an AVID music listener and bedroom musician, and seeing you guys give your analysis from the producer side is super fascinating. And I agree with your sentiment regarding the other extreme of chasing technical perfection also being no good. I'll take three soulful notes played with emotion over 1,000 note technical shred any idea, but the sweet spot is somewhere in the middle. My complaints with Kirk's solos here isn't that they're technically poor, but rather I get no sense of any passion or investment whatsoever. Where's the melody? What am I feeling? Have you even heard the song before you wrote this? Sorry, this is longer than I thought! Going through all your reactions so far, and eagerly looking forward to Death Magnetic. Side note, the "best" mixes are fan edits from the leaked Guitar Hero stems. I personally like the Mark3 version. :)
@@impulseucf I agree with almost everything! And for DM we will listen to 1 song with the original mix, and the listen to the entire album as the iTunes version, which is supposedly the best official r!elease
It is definitely one of the most prominent things in the mix! Now for fun, go listen to Billie Jean by Michael Jackson and focus on the shaker. It's the loudest thing in the entire mix and it runs through the entire song!
😂😂😂 but could you imagine Orion the bass middle 8 section with a hihat like that... It's near the same vibe, It's good for live, but not a studio recording, personally would love to hear the hats with more dynamics lower in the mix or just cut out..
the "mercyful fate" song on garage, inc is a medley of songs by mercyful fate, and it's a prime example of metallica's covers NOT being better than the originals, though i do really like it.
This is my first time here and I absolutely loved listening to you guys break down this album from a professional point of view. 👍 I was definitely feeling bored on the first listen but now it's on non-stop.
Make sure to check out our other Metallica reactions but beware, a lot of people were frustrated that I talked too much over the music during the Ride and Master reactions. However, I learned from that and I think the Justice, Black Album, and Kill Em All reactions are much better!
@@PatrickMusilekI love you guys talking, that's kind of the point of a reaction video. Bizarre that people get angry about it too; put the album on if you just want to hear the songs. Your other videos are great too ( St Anger was a rollercoaster 😂)
Gotta be honest bro… kinda pissed me off calling Crown THE CLEAR CUT WORST SONG when it’s EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE! It’s the heaviest shit on the album, BEST INTRO, BEST SOLO, BEST CHORUS! Sludgy! GRIMMY! LOAD ERA PERFECTION ( after one listen it is easy to make conclusions that may very well sway for you as obscurely as they did for me….). How’s this… THERE AREN’T ANY SHIT SONGS, ever…. This entire album works
I did like it better the second time i heard it, while editing, but I still think it's the weakest song on the album. If I wanted sludgy, grimy riffs I would listen to Avatarium or some other doom metal band.
@@PatrickMusilek this is where our worlds collide my new friend! Since the first time I heard THING that Should not be I had an epiphany… METALLICA used THRASH to hone there craft, which developed into the HEAVY METALLICA of the last 9 albums! Including AJFA… it has immense weight. So, profoundly, I must insist the METALLICA you are reviewing is exactly what they have always been, and that’s why it’s FIRE! They decided back in 1988 that HEAVY was the way and long the road to pave brother!!! And I fucking LOVE IT’. Great review. I enjoyed it.
Crown of Barbed Wire is definitely top 3, possibly top 2., for me. Sleepwalk My Life Away and Screaming Suicide are the weakest. Sleepwalk is like a rejigged Enter Sandman, and that's been done already, much better, at least twice ( King Nothing, Now That We're Dead)
I love songs that are 5 to 8 minutes but songs that are 3 to 4 minutes are some that hit hard though. For me this album is something else. Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All and The Black Album can't be touched by any band even them, but these last 2 albums are awesome.
They've technically made a "Making of" documentary since the black album. There was "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" for the Black Album. There were various "Fan Can" videos for Load and Reload. Then of course there's Some kind of monster for St. Anger. Finally, Death Magnetic and Hardwired both had videos released of them making every song that you can watch on RU-vid.
you guys should listen to some of StateofMercuries reworks of Metallica songs yes it may not be a "audio engineers react" sorta thing but it would be interesting to see if you guys prefer his reworked version over the original or whatever
So, first of all very nice video! Got kinda addicted and already saw your AJFA and Black Album videos. Love this concept. Second of all, please, pretty please, when you will encounter Death Magnetic, listen to (at least) the iTunes (not so) remastered verison. It does not have the clipping that the original does and you can finally hear the instruments correctly. It is still a bit compressed, but man, its an improvement. So, again I beg you. Listen to that verison instead! Looking forward to it!
I still can't get past you not liking One. I mean I completely understand that everyone has different taste in music and I respect your opinion but I literally got friends who listen to nothing but Rap music who like One. My father who listens to Country music, likes One.
Yeah that’s something I can’t get past either lol. A solid 80% of my music consumption is rap and I absolutely love one, truly one of the greatest arrangements and pieces of work I’ve ever heard
I am planning on doing an entire video on just that song but I feel I need to hear their whole catalogue first to be able to accurately say it's their worst song lol! For now, it's just going to be a running joke ;)
I agree with C Parker about Metallica being afraid to make short songs. On Death Magnetic, the song The End of the Line would be one of my favorites if it was 4 minutes. But that shit goes on for 7 minutes for no reason.
I love Crown of barbed wire. Bad ass riff. Different. Sounds like a demo?? Are you serious? Th guitars were louder during the chorus for no reason?? It’s A CHORUS!! By the way, the guy in yellow talks too much.
Edit* I am your 666th like xD Patrick's take about "One" might be the worst take I have ever heard in my life, in general! One is considered as (no pun intended) one of the greatest metal songs in music history. Heck, songs in general. You might be an audio engineer my guy, but your music taste is jack shait
